it's going to be certainly on the nippy side this evening but doable as the rain and the snow from yesterday is now well north of us. still across parts of western new york and northwestern pennsylvania. just some clouds around here. temps down in the 30s. frederick 37. leesburg and gaithersburg and baltimore 38 while we're 42. even down in southern maryland low 40s. as you factor in the winds, still a bit of waindz chill this morning -- windchill this morning. feels like it's in the 30s. bundle up and pay attention. monika santami stepping in and letting you know about your morning commute. it hasn't been much fun on the southbound side of i-270. here's a live look from our sky 9 trying to get southbound toward montrose road just beyond that point earlier medical emergency has been cleared. all lanes are open but we're going to zoom out here and show you the delay for about three miles on the southbound side of i-270 again trying to approach montrose road and beyond where the early morning activity has been cleared. let's go over to the maps.

overall, though, the beltway has been great. there are no issues to report on the north side of town as you head on the outer loop beyond college park into silver spring. you're going to be just fine. no issues on 29 or 95 heading in from baltimore and we'll take a live look outside once again and this time northbound 395 in virginia. looking great at duke street up seminary road. all lanes are open this morning. coming up in my next report, we'll focus 066 at 6:11 -- on 66 at 6:11. we'll check on some of the top stories. the future of the u.s. postal service will be debated on capitol hill. the senate will vote today on plans to end saturday mail service and allow the postal service to tap into some of its retirement funds. the post office wants to begin closing thousands of branches beginning next month. the primary season is not over yet. five states hold contests today. connecticut, delaware, new york, pennsylvania and rhode island. for anyone watching in the keystone state, voting begins there at 7:00 a.m.

former congresswoman gabrielle giffords will be back in washington today. the arizona democrat is going to receive an award from the activist group called "emily's list." giffords survived an assassination attempt in january 2011. she resigned from office three months ago. while you slept, metro spent the night disinfecting dozens of its buses. it wants to protect you from viral meningitis. >> that's because the metro bus driver tested positive for it after driving his routes last week. delia goncalves is live in northwest washington with more on the big job metro is working on now. good morning, delia. >> reporter: absolutely a big job. good morning, mike, andrea. they spent overnight scrubbing down literally scrubbing down the 52 and 54 buses that run up and down here on 14th street. in fact, not only did they scrub down those buss that were affected by -- buses that were affected by the sick driver, they disinfecting all 164 buses here in northwest washington.

the driver, the sick metro employee, drove the 52 and 54 buses between 7:30 and 10:18 friday morning. the buses travel down 14th to l'enfant plaza and then back here to 14th and colorado. metro does not believe this man had exposure to any other buses because prior to friday, he was on vacation. >> i'm glad that they're disinfecting the buses and kind of reacting kind of massively and comprehensively to it. >> the man has to work. i mean, what can i say. he's somebody's father, somebody's husband. he has to work. >> reporter: he does have to work but he's home right now trying to recover from this viral meningitis outbreak. however, he is expected to be okay. before you panic, doctors describe viral meningitis as the flu basically. they say it's far less serious

than bacterial meningitis. we'll have more from the doctors and what you need to know about viral meningitis coming up in the next half- hour. back to you, mike, andre came. >> thanks, -- andrea. >> thanks, delia. a group which oversees metro is going to be checking out the case of a man who died at pentagon station because the defibrillator there was not charged. we told but this last week. 51-year-old man had a heart attack but the aed couldn't help him. metro said last week it checked out all 46aeds it has making sure they are powered up and ready to go, but the tristate oversight committee wants to make sure metro is indeed doing enough to protect its riders. the marine who killed another marine in southeast washington claims the killing was in self-defense. the 20-year-old is charged with second-degree murder. the he said he got into a fight early saturday with another marine and it ended up with a stabbing. court documents show he was

defending himself after the other man punched him in the head. today maryland governor martin o'malley is going to meet with leaders from the house of delegates and the state senate. over breakfast they will decide on what will be the agenda for potential special session. the biggest issue is passing the budget before the doomsday spending plan takes effect july 1. prince george's county executive rushern baker hopes they will talk about expanding gambling, too. lawmakers left annapolis before voting on a plan that would allow table games at a kane see in the county -- at a came seen know in the county. bake -- casino in the county. baker says it's important for the entire state. money for the programs running out very, very fast. new pressure is coming from problems we've all been facing. high energy prices and the rough economy. those factors are making social security's financial problems even worse. both social security and medicare are burning through

their budgets. >> pressure on these programs are mounting. americans are living longer and the number of retirees is growing. the reports project when considered on a combined basis, social security's retirement and disability programs have dedicated funds sufficient to cover benefits for the next 20 years. but in 2033 incoming revenues and trust fund resources will be insufficient to maintain the payment of full benefits. after that time, dedicated funds will be sufficient to cover about three-quarters of full benefits. >> to run through this, the trustees who oversee social security say the program will run out of money by 2033. that is three years earlier than expected. medicare's finances have stabilized but that program's hospital and insurance fund is still projected to run out of money in 2024. if the social security and medicare funds ever become

exhausted, both programs would collect only enough money in payroll taxes to pay partial benefits. the trustees just handed in their annual report. they say that congress has to address the problem as soon as possible but no action is expected before the november elections. arp of course the seniors advocacy group responded to the report. it says social security is not in crisis. medicare, though, they say is in a deeper problem and it's call following more -- calling for more cost cuts through the entire system rather than just medicare. it's turning out to be a political situation that will be a nightmare to deal with going forward. people say what is the solution? who knows. every single side has a different policy and the health care law change was supposed to make a huge dent. maybe making some accidents, maybe not. it depends on who you ask. >> the population keeps growing

centreville on i-66 but luckily all lanes are open. it is incident free. coming up in my next report, a closer look at virginia roads at 6:18. 6:12 now. the white house has been doing its own investigation into the secret service scandal in colombia. so far they say no signs of any misconduct. >> the scandal is one of the stories that continues to make news now at 6:12. 12 members of the military are now implicated in that prostitution scandal. those implicated have had their security clearances revoked. six other secret service agents have been removed from their jobs. investigators are now wrapping up their work in colombia. a second person is under arrest for that st. patrick's day attack in baltimore. police say 20-year-old shayona davis was in the crowd that attacked a 31-year-old man from arlington. the attack was recorded and then posted online. police are hoping to make at least two more arrests in the case. we're doing a good job controlling our cholesterol.

the centers for disease control and prevention says only 13% of american adults have high cholesterol. experts think that's because so many people take prescription drugs. the police chief in sanford, florida will not be allowed to quit, at least not now. the city commissioners rejected his resignation. >> it came weeks after a no confidence vote against him as part of the trayvon martin killing. teresa garcia has the latest. >> reporter: sanford, florida's embattled police chief will have to keep his job. commissioners voted to reject his resignation. >> he deserve as better shake than this. >> reporter: the rejection comes a month after the commissioners gave lee a vote of no confidence for his handling of the trayvon martin shooting. the next day lee said he would temporarily step aside. >> i do this in the hopes of restoring some semblance of calm to the city which has been in turmoil for several weeks. >> reporter: lee will remain on administration give leave

during an veg. the man charged with second degree murder for killing martin was released from jail. george zimmerman is free on $150,000 bail. he is wearing a gps monitoring device but his location possibly outside of florida is not being disclosed for his safety. >> now that he's out, he's out and exposed. but i'm just hoping we can keep him safe and truly hopeful that people will just let it work and let's find out what actually happened. >> reporter: an attorney for martin's family says trayvon's parents respect the law but are disappointed at zimmerman's release. >> they're just praying and trying to hope that his freedom is temporary because the damage that he's caused to them is permanent. >> reporter: if convicted, zimmerman faces a possibility of 25 years to life in prison. teresa garcia, cbs news. >> george zimmerman has an arraignment coming up next month but he waived his right to appear so he can stay in

hiding. not much of a winter this year. out to our west even, it was before halloween when people had to shovel snow. and then pretty much stayed blank for a long time and then after easter people out there shoveling snow again two weeks after easter. all that rain that fell around here was snow out to our west. this is what it looked like in western maryland yesterday. several inches of snow in late april, not necessarily unheard of but some are calling it an anomaly. that doesn't mean people like it. >> i had shorts on the other day. >> you know, when you spend summer down in florida and you come back, this is not fun. >> western new york got hit with snow yesterday as well. one to four inches along lake erie. but the snow should taper off by later this morning and then maybe we get back to spring somewhere. >> are we through with the snow surprises or could there still be the rare possibility? >> i will argue it was a

wizards win 101-73. what's really important is their first four-game winning streak in more than four years. the bobcats have lost 21 in a row. despite an ugly two years at verizon center, ernie grunfeld will get more time to serve as general manager. he and the team have agreed to a new contract. an official announcement could come later today. grunfeld has been with the wizards since 2003 and after a few playoff appearances, the team has struggled in the last few years. boy, andrea just can't catch a break when it comes to her saints. another scandal involving new orleans and alleged cheating. espn is reporting saints general manager has some sort of listening device in his suite at the super dome and they say it let him eavesdrop on visiting coaching staff

d.c. i'll be back in a few minutes looking ahead toward the weekend. i know it's tuesday but i'm already looking. here's monika watching all sorts of trouble southbound on 270. >> 270 has just been in a bind this morning in two separate spot. this time it's in germantown on the southbound side of 270. let me just first start off with the the delays. coming down from frederick toward urbana, you're going to go about 35 miles an hour. then just beyond that, after route 118 in germantown abaccident does block the two left lanes. let's go to a live picture close by. i couldn't find a camera right at the accident but you can see the slow traffic here at father hurley boulevard trying to get past route 118. again two left lanes are blocked with the accident and crews are on the scene there. so keep that in mind for your travel plans this morning. sorry about that. we're going to take you back over to the maps this time to the south side of town. no problems this morning on route 5, route 4, route 301 in southern maryland. we'll take a live look near andrews air force base at route 4 pennsylvania avenue and the beltway which is still looking great. both loops of the entire stretch of prince george's

african-american voters. guess who's making headlines again with something he said. >> that would be d.c. councilman marion barry. weeks ago the former mayor was in trouble for criticizing asian-owned businesses in his ward 8. >> this time it's about nurses. he told leaders at udc they should help more city residents become nurses. he said, quote, in fact, it's so bad that if you go to the hospital, you find a number of immigrants who are nurses, particularly from the philippines. and no offense -- these are marian barry's words -- let's grow our own teacher. let's grow our own nurses so we don't have to be scrounging around in our community clinics and other kinds of places having to hire people from somewhere else. the washington examiner reports it tried to get a response from barry but with no luck. metro spent the overnight hours disinfecting dozens of buses. it wants to protect riders after a bus driver tested positive for viral meningitis.

delia goncalves is live in northwest washington with the story. good morning, delia. >> reporter: good morning, andrea. we're live at 14th and colorado. this is the end of the line for the 52 and 54 buses. those are the routeses that are affected by this viral meningitis. metro tells us the driver was diagnosed with viral meningitis after his friday morning shift. before that he was on vacation so they don't believe that any other buses were affected. metro quickly sent the driver home and spent the overnight hours disinfecting not only the 52 and 54. all 164 buses in the north west garage here on 14th street. doctors are telling us viral meningitis far less serious than bacterial meningitis. it only affects infants and people with compromised inhuman systems -- immune systems. >> it can generally cause fever, headaches, confusion, sometimes light sensitivity.

>> it's contagious just like the flu is or the cold is that if you come into contact with fluids that the patient had, cue potentially get some symptoms. >> reporter: the doctor also tells us those symptoms last about seven to ten days. a prevention? best way to prevent viral meningitis, sanitation wipes or good old fashion soap and water. back to you. >> thank you, delia goncalves with that update from northwest washington this morning. a new renovation is under way at mcpherson square, northwest washington. the park service is trying to fix the damage done by all of those occupy protesters. it's going to cost about $6,000 to repair the grass at the south end of the park. this is after a $400,000 renovation last year. all the grass was turned to mud by the occupiers and their tents. they are allowed to continue their protests on the opposite side the park but are not allowed to sleep there overnight. jessica doyle is not just watching your money but watching facebook, too. >> the company's growth has started to slow down a little.

>> that's right. just a couple weeks until the company has its landmark initial public offering. it's showing a little bit of wear and tear. facebook revealed yesterday that its first quarter profit and revenue dropped in the final quarter of 2011. the season network is having to spend more nowadays. it's building data centers, hiring engineers. "the wall street journal" reports facebook is now showing the strain the company assured with the potential valuation of about $100 billion right out of the gate facebook needs to justify that sum to ipo investors. another tech company hitting the skids, network shares spiked. the news wasn't enough to overcome a weak sales outlook. and this sounds like something like the plot of a science fiction movie. a company backed by billionaires will today announce a plan to mine as troids for things like gold, believe it or not.

good morning. welcome back. monika santami with time saver traffic. it's not been much fun on 270. it started with an early morning medical situation after montrose road. now an accident in germantown after route 118. so essentially your traffic begins out of frederick. it's going to be off and on most of the way into germantown and then beyond that again into rockville. all lanes are open past that earlier incident at montrose road. let's go to a live picture on the southbound side of i-270. unusually heavy traffic passing father hurley boulevard. on the northbound side of i-95, normal slow stuff as you leave dale city. you see all that yellow and red there forming into woodbridge. then it's going to be heavy into springfield as well. once beyond that, expect the slow stuff. we'll go live to 395 where it's

going to be slow through landmark at duke street heading for seminary road and then beyond that you're okay to the 14th street bridge. all lanes have been open. it's been incident free luckily on 395 this morning. now it's time for a commuter alert. something just about no driver in montgomery county wants to hear. that would be me. more speed and red light cameras are coming. the washington examiner reports ten newportable speed cameras will be out there in the next 18 months. 20 more red light cameras will go up as well. last year the county raked in $8 million for speed camera tickets and police want to create a corridor of cameras. this is what's going to get me. that way you have to drive the speed limit for the entire road and not just where those cameras are which is what most of us do. >> howard did have the best advice. slow down. >> one more time slow down. >> slow down. >> that would be good advice.

bloom. 42 degrees with 37 on that windchill and a southwest wind at 9 and the barometer continues to rise. we'll continue to watch some of that snow this morning up to new york and pennsylvania. that will wind down. here come the extra clouds late this afternoon and this evening with maybe a couple of sprinkles in the mountains. could come across northern virginia, maybe an isolated one tonight as it pushes through the region. tomorrow, though, a good deal of sunshine. so a nicer day. temperatures well up in the 60s. then by thursday morning, showers, maybe a rumble or two of thunder moving in. highs on thursday with the showers around should warm to the 70s, the low 70s. our forecast today about 62. a little breezy. sunshine giving way to more clouds this afternoon. 30s and 40s again tonight. upper of ostomy with low 7 -- upper 60s with low 70s on thursday. 60s friday. could be a late thunderstorm and saturday looks okay, around 70. again the chance for late storms. sunday we're dipping back into the 60s. mike and andrea, over to you.
