of shelby drive in oxon hill, maryland. five adults, four men and a woman were found dead inside the house this morning when someone stopped by the house to check on the occupants' welfare. investigators are trying to determine exactly where the carbon monoxide leak originated. we have a live crew that's on the way to the scene. we'll bring you the latest information when we receive it. republican mitt romney will tighten his grip today on the republican presidential nomination. it is primary day in five states, and the former massachusetts governor is expected to win. danielle nottingham has the latest. >> reporter: g.o.p. voters are casting their ballots in western pennsylvania. the state is one of five holding republican primaries today. but mitt romney is looking to

add to his commanding lead in the delegate count. >> i like him. and i think i'll probably do better landling money than -- handling money than obama does. >> reporter: but the massachusetts governor is already sounding like the g.o.p.'s nominee campaigning against president obama. >> i would like you to give me your support and show we're ready and willing to take on president obama. >> reporter: he's also making appearances with florida senator marco rubio who stumped as a potential running mate. >> romney benefits from being seen with him. rubio's cuban heritage might help hispanic voters be open to him. >> reporter: president obama will spend the day courting young voters. he visits two college campuses in battleground states to push for an extension of low interest rates for school loans. >> we have ridiculous amounts of loans. it's hard to pay them off. >> reporter: romney now also

endorses a temporary extension of lower interest rates for students, even though g.o.p. house members oppose it. both campaigns are fighting for the support of young voters buried in college debt, which is higher than the amount americans owe on credit cards or auto loans. danielle nottingham, cbs news, the white house. ron paul and newt gingrich are still in the race for the republican presidential nomination. lawyers for army private bradley manning are expected to ask a judge to dismiss all charges against him. manning is accused of leaking hundreds of thousands of classified war documents to the whistle blowing website wikileaks. the defense claims military prosecutors have failed to hand over a broad range of documents helpful to their case. oral arguments in the case are scheduled for a pretrial hearing at fort meade in maryland. the future of the u.s. postal service is being debated on capitol hill. the senate will vote today on

plans to end saturday mail service and to allow the postal service to tap into its retirement funds. the post office wants to begin closing thousands of branches beginning next month. a fire badly damaged a house in montgomery county. sky 9 was over the home at 2323 twin valley lane in silver spring this morning. fire officials say the occupants were not home when the flames broke out. they suspect that the fire began in the chimney. there's no word yet on how much damage was caused. metro says one of its bus drivers has been diagnosed with viral meningitis. his bus on the 14th street line has been removed from service and metro says that it has disinfected all 164 of their buses as a precaution. viral meningitis is generally less severe than bacterial

meningitis and it goes away without specific treatment. >> generally causes fever, headaches, confusion, sometimes light sensitivity. it's contagious just like the flu is or a cold is that if you contact with fluids the patient had, you could potentially get symptoms. >> a metro spokesperson says the driver was on vacation before he received his diagnosis on friday. there will be a public hearing tonight on a proposed fare increase for montgomery county ride on buses. under the plan, ride on rates would go from $1.70 to $2. smartrip users would pay 10 cents more. the county may also extend parking enforcement to saturdays in bethesda, silver spring and wheaton. a public hearing will be held at 7:30 tonight at the county council headquarters in rockville. the marine who killed another marine in southeast washington is claiming that it

was in self-defense. 20-year-old michael poth has been charged with second-degree murder. police say that he got into a fight early saturday with philip bush social security ong and ended with him stabbing bushong in the chest. poth claims he was defending himself after bushong punched him in the head. poth will be back in court next month. a new disturbing trend from southern california. teens getting drunk on hand sanitizer. a half dozen young people have been treated for alcohol poisoning after drinking the liquid. liquid hand sanitizer is 62% alcohol and it's easy for teenagers to buy. experts say that parents should buy foam hand sanitizer because it's harder to distill the alcohol. there's some more controversial comments coming from council member marian

barry after criticizing asian- owned businesses in his ward, ward 8. he is now taking aim at nurses from outside the country. while telling leaders at udc they should do more to help city residents become nurses, barry added, quote, in fact, it is so bad, that if you go to the hospital now, you find a number of immigrants who are nurses, particularly from the philippines. and no offense but let's grow our own teachers. let's grow our own nurses so that we don't have to be scrounging around in our community clinics and other kinds of places having to hire people from somewhere else. the washington examiner reports that it tried to get a response from council member barry but there was no reply. still ahead on 9news now at noon, a very funny thing -- a very funny thing happened prior to a meteorologist television forecast. we're going to have details

kevin with all news radio 99.1. kevin, what can you tell us about the victims? >> right now what i can tell you about the victims, according to some family friends that came out here, was they're all adults. they were all inside. all blue collar workers, construction workers i'm being told but all five of them were inside, adults. also some neighbors here tell me that they suspect it was caused by a faulty furnace so we're working to confirm that right now as well. >> do we have any information about the ages of these victims? we understand that two of the victims were found by a family member who showed up at the home and then firefighters apparently found three additional bodies. do we have any information on ages? >> right now the ages that i'm -- the information on ages is coming from family and friends. police haven't released those just yet. i'm being told the youngest was probably late 30s, early 40s. that's exactly what i'm hearing is that they came in. they found the first two bodies

and found the roast while they were -- rest while they were doing a check of the entire house. >> this apparently has not spread to any neighbors' homes, this carbon monoxide poisoning? neighbors are fine? >> neighbors are fine. right now i'm hearing this is contained to just this one home. again, like dave was mentioning, they think it was a faulty furnace at play here. most neighbors are out watching the scene develop here as ems, fire and washington gas are out here. >> i'm sure that neighbors are very shocked about this and quite concerned. >> there is a lot of concern out here, but some others told me that they're not concerned for their own safety considering that they have carbon monoxide detectors. they weren't sure if this home did in fact have a detector or not, but most neighbors telling me that they have been weary about faulty four fasts -- furnaces, especially since most of the homes were built in the 1950's. most telling me they're not concerned for their own safety with carbon monoxide detectors but they are shocked that

unfortunately he had an altercation with another rider and his bike stopped suddenly. he was projected off of his bicycle and landed on the back of his neck. he sustained very, very serious brain injuries and three days later he passed away from those injuries, even though he was wearing his helmet. >> he wanted to be an organ donor and why? >> yes, he was. when paul and i moved here in 1980 from graduate school, we got our driver's license and signed up to be organ donors. little did we know 25 years later that that decision was going to be very, very critical. >> he saved many lives. >> he did. three of his organs were transplanted in others, both of his kidneys and his liver so he gave new life to three individuals.

he also donated heart valves and bone and tissues that saved the lives of many others also. >> the ride is going to be where, very quickly because i want people to participate? >> okay. paul's ride for life starts at the reston town center. it's this saturday. starting at 7:00. we have -- these are our t- shirts. we're very proud of our logo. paul was an avid cyclist and when he would complete a ride, he would hold his bike over his head in triumph so we use that as our logo and we're very excited about our ride and hope everyone will come out for it. >> it's so easy to become an organ donor. when you get a new driver's license, you can register. this is donate life month so please, think about giving your organs and giving life to someone else. thank you for being with us. i know this is difficult. we'll be right back in just a moment.

a teenager in china was talking on her cell phone when she suddenly was swallowed by a hole in the sidewalk. reports say that the sidewalk was eroded by underground water and the girl fell about 18 feet. a cab driver witnessed everything and he jumped in the hole himself. firefighters were able to reach both of them, pull them to safety. family members are using this video to tie and find that cab driver to give him personal thanks. well, we all know how whacky the weather has been,

but watch this. just minutes before a pennsylvania meet peat was about to deliver -- meteorologist was about to deliver his forecast, a family of bears society up. this video is from wnep tv in pennsylvania. momma bear and her three cubs decided that they wanted to go on camera. the meteorologist kurt aaron agreed and he decided to stay indoors. very smart move. let's go to our meteorologist howard. >> i understand he was out there and found his badge and opened the door and ran inside rather quickly, even though they say you're not supposed to run, he said i don't care. i had to get out of there. he is fine. he did the weather from inside. the tree pollen was high. the grass and mold is low. our day planner sunny and kind of breezy to windy at times this afternoon. look at these wind speeds. 17, 18, 18. maybe a few more clouds late today but it's turning out to be a nice midday with highs going into the lower 60s. somebody might make 64 or 65
