a carbon monoxide detector. family members now trying to understand how their loved ones could be laughing and playing with grandchildren last night and then just as suddenly gone. >> jacquelyn has been trying to get through to her sister and her nieces in el salvador to tell them that their father and husband, nelson verde is dead. >> i can't. >> chavez had come to the house mid-morning to check on his father, oscar. he found two bodies in the doorway and firefighters found three further inside. >> we had a heating system that had a very old piping system and obviously had not been maintained. >> the fire chief says investigators found a break between sections of exhaust pipe from the furnace and they found colorless, odorless

carbon monoxide at concentrations well beyond deadly. >> we can all stand here today and think about what we would do or could have or should have. the reality is, these people were affected very quickly by a large quantity of carbon monoxide. >> word spread quickly, but for more than an hour, they had to wait for details. >> i don't know what happened. i just know that some people dead in my mom's house and i can't get inside. >> the cdc says these kinds of deaths are shockingly common. nearly 500 people every year die from carbon monoxide poisoning. and the fire chief says a couple of things could have saved these lives and probably many more. regular checkups of your home heating system and one of these. a carbon monoxide detector. fire chief says these are just as important as smoke alarms.

derek. >> thank you, bruce. well, what would drive a mother to stab her own child? baltimore police are questioning a woman after she allegedly stabbed her 8 week old daughter in the neck. this happened this morning inside the department of social services building. the child is in the hospital and in serious condition. the mom is undergoing a psychiatric evaluation. four days after a vicious dog attack in northeast d.c., investigators still have not identified the two dogs involved or the owner. neighbors are frightened of another attack and furious that investigators aren't doing more. so today, kristin fisher tried to get some answers. >> i honestly feel like the police not doing their job. >> i want somebody to come forward. >> the dogs should be euthanized and the owner should be arrested. >> these people saw it happen. two huge dogs attacking three children. almost every person on this street says they know where the

dogs live and who the owners are. there's even bloody paw prints inside the front door. but so far, d.c. police and animal control have made no arrests, filed no charges, and they say they have no idea where the dogs are. >> they aren't doing nothing, it's like they don't care about us nor our children. >> today, i have come to the d.c. department of health. the agency that oversees animal control to find out what is taking so long and why so little progress has been made. >> we don't have any indication that those dogs are inside the building at this time and the people that we spoke to inside the building, which is not every resident, but the residents that we have spoken to, we don't have reason to believe that they are the owner of the dog. >> neighbors say the owners, maybe even the dogs are held up inside. it would take a search warrant to get them out. >> could a warrant be a next step? >> it's possible at some point in the investigation, but at this time, it doesn't appear to be a possibility. >> but neighbors say their

five states hold their primaries today. mitt romney could take a big step toward locking up the nomination. romney is looking ahead to a showdown with president obama in november. voters are casting their ballots in five states where more than 200 delegates are at stake. mitt romney is expected to win all five. >> many people in the republican ranks have decided that they should line up behind him. >> thank you so much. thank you. >> mitt romney may be in the lead to win his party's nomination, but he is still working to win their support. >> you can always express your opinion with the others running, but there's more on that ballot than romney. >> newt gingrich will be reevaluating his campaign after the counts are counted in delaware. but governor romney is no longer talking about his

daredevil dive into a speeding van. that's during a bank robbery yesterday. her boyfriend was behind the wheel. she eventually gave up, but police had to send out their police dog to get the driver to turn himself in. watch as it poured from the van as the dog tried to subdue the suspect. a man and his girlfriend now face quite a few charges. talk about one tough customer. police in lakeland, florida, looking for the guy jumping a counter at a mcdonald's. he attacked the manager with the baseball bat. that manager suffered minor injuries. he had gone in before and had complained about the service. also caught on tape, a smoldering manhole explodes, blowing several firefighters off their feet. the blast happened as crews were investigating a fire near los angeles. fire captain thought the fire was nearly autowhen the explosion literally shook the neighborhood. >> tried to roll away from it and the next thing i know,

that's when the fireman was dragging me and i found out later it was my fireman. someone picked me up from the back of my coat and drug me. >> oh my goodness. wolf and several firefighters suffered minor injuries. they never know what they are going to face. >> incredible. >> we are almost average. better than sunday and monday. >> it's inching its way back up. >> exactly. and also inching its way back to average rain fall amounts. we were never in a drought, but they were along the bay and we had some good news. let's talk about how much rain fell. we got 1 to 3 inches from that storm. that puts us up to 7.28 for the year. that's down 4 inches, but we put a good dent in that. we're okay. for the monthly rain fall, we're in great shape. we're only down .7. we are 1 3/4 for the month of april. that rain helped us out and cleared out the pollen for a

couple of days. live look outside. it's our weather cam. clouds are coming back in a little bit. we are brought back in. temperatures will barely in the low 60s downtown. dew point is now 18. that's really troublesome. winds are calm and the pressure is rising 29.61. there are freeze warnings in effect west of town. but so far, in the immediate metro area, temps above freezing so far. here's the big picture. look at all the showers and snow showers in new york state. it's the same system, just sitting and spinning, slowly working its way in. as far as we are concerned, some of the showers, as the sun goes down, the showers will dispate and the clouds will dispate as well. don't anticipate showers getting much closer to us. so that's where the showers are going to be for the next few hours. temperatures, plenty of 50s. 57 in gaithersburg.

still 63 in manassas. but 60 in springfield. and 62 in college park and 60 in beltsville. temperatures are going to fall quickly after the sun goes down with that dry air mass. warming up though gradually. cold tonight. you'll need a jacket for the kids tomorrow at the bus stop. milder on wednesday. and then warmer on thursday, but we'll pay a price. showers and storms possible. for tonight, partly cloudy. lower temperatures again. winds westerly at 10. right around inside the beltway and around downtown, you'll be in the mid to low 60s. 38 in reston and 38 in fairfax. plenty of 30s. and 39 nor andrews. now by morning, partly cloudy. a cold start, jacket and shades. good idea. 30s and 40s. not much wind. by afternoon, partly cloudy and milder. keep a light jacket. if you duck out of the sun, it will feel cool. winds out of the west.
