news" for wednesday, april 25, 2012. good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm michelle miller. the race for the republican nomination began last year as a bitter fight among half dozen candidates but last night it turned into a rump for romney, sweeping five primaries in the northeast and he did it in convincing fashion scoring double-digit viler tos in every contest. it solidified his tanding as presumptive gop nomination. during his victory speech he focused on the general election and president obama. >> together we are going to win on november 6th. >> reporter: a confident mitt romney addressed supporters after winning primaries in five states. in a speech entitled "a better america begins tonight "request "he hit president obama on the economy. >> but because he has failed, he

will run a campaign of diversions and distractions and distortions. that kind of campaign may are worked at another place and at a different time. but not here. and not now. it's still about the economy. and and we're not stupid. >> reporter: on tuesday one of one of former norm nations offered his support. on cnn rick santorum said he would back romney against the president but stopped short of an endorsement. >> everyone assumes you're going to endorse romney. spit it out. >> as i said is romney will the nominee and i'm going to support the nominee, whoever that is, period. >> reporter: newt gingrich finished a distant second. following the loss in connecticut, he said he would take a realistic look at the state of his campaign. >> we are going to think carefully about how we can be the most helpful to this country and how we can make sure, one,

that barack obama is a one-term president, period. >> reporter: gingrich promised is noters he would be at events in north carolina this week. ron paul has vowed to stay in the race until the convention, even though he has yet to win a single primary. despite winning all five races last night, mitt romney did not capture enough delegates to secure the nomination. a cbs news estimate has him at 298 delegates, that's 298 delegates away from officially becoming the republican nominee. both republicans and democrats are wooing college-age voters. president obama heads to iowa today to continue his pitch, prevent an interest rate increase on student loans. the president spoke to college students in colorado and north carolina yesterday. mr. obama said he and the first lady didn't take off their student loans until eight years ago. >> michelle and i know, we know about this firsthand. this isn't something i read in a

briefing book. this is not something that's an abstract idea for us. we've been in your shows. when we graduated from college and law school, we had a mountain of did debt, both of us. >> the president wants congress to keep student loan interest rates at 3.4%. if congress does not act by july 1st, the rate would double. there's been more fallout over the secret service prostitution scandal. nine agents have now lost their jobs following the events in colombia. the president says implicated agents are not representative of the agency that guards him and his family. susan mcginnis is in washington with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. so, now all 12 secret service employees have been dealt with. another 12 members of the military are still under investigation. and now president obama has something to say about it on late night tv. three more secret service agents implicated in the columbian

i-95, watch out for the accident cleanup at route 1. up ahead over in the district, a couple of things. police investigation closes georgia avenue north of kansas and kansas avenue just near georgia avenue there is a water main break. so a couple of different situations there in northwest d.c. let's go outside live on the northbound side of i-95 here at the occoquan river. you can see things are still running pretty well past the accident near route 1 as well. let's go back to the maps and this time to the other side of town. no problems to report on 270 coming in from frederick down to the point where the lanes divide but an accident on route 29 at university boulevard. we'll go out live at father hurley boulevard. no problems here. in my next report another look around the area at 4:39. back to you guys. metro workers in rosslyn have been working through the night to make sure derailment doesn't impact the morning rush hour too much. >> that's because a influence line train -- blue line train went off the tracks. the incident left many riders

kind of stunned. >> reporter: this is the six- car train on the lower of the two levels at the rosslyn station outbound toward franconia springfield just pulling out. first two cars in the tunnel when? >> one set of wheels on one car that came off the track. >> reporter: no injuries. passengers in the first two cars just walked into the third car. >> it began at 7:12 and all passengers were offloaded at 7:21. is was a full six-car train. there was just over 30,000 passengers on board the train. >> reporter: the trains kept running, looked pretty full but single tracking to get around the derailment caused some delays. >> had to wait for the orange train to go by because of the single track and then wait for the orange train to unload before we could move to the next stop. >> it wasted about 15 minutes and the train wasn't too crowded but it was sufficiently to make me late for something i wanted to do to get to the
