6:37 am
it's said to be 2.4 million each year. these do not become victimless crimes. the thieves use the i.d.s to apply for credit cards, cell phones and the like. the lenders often left holding the bag but family members can get ripped off too especially if they're left to manage the estates of their loved ones. this is what they recommend. loved ones monitor their deceased family members' identities for at least one year after death. the credit reporting agency will probably require a death certificate and proof you have the right to see this information. a marriage license or a will showing you're the executor. if you manage an estate, play close attention to unexpected bills. don't just assume they're mistakes and throw them away. it doesn't hurt to make sure the social security administration has an accurate account of your loved one's passing. it actually maintains a death master file so you're going to want to make sure that is updated. even given all of those things that you can do, it's still extraordinarily difficult to work out a credit reporting
6:38 am
problem, a debt problem and as a third party it make it is that much harder. >> it could take years in some cases. >> we've seen the ill effects of that, the long process it takes to restore your name. >> yes, awful. >> checking your own credit report but you wouldn't think to check a dead relative. 6:38. in nine minutes, food, water and reality show star mary beth al brieght joins us in stewed -- albright joins us in studio. she'll talk about a new effort to get children to eat well. >> mostly sunny skies. we're flirting with the 70 70- degree mark. keep it right here for 9news now.
