military have had their security clearances suspended. senator carl levin says six of them violated curfew before the president arrived in cartagena earlier this month. the military's investigation is expected to conclude next week. investigators will then return to the capital with more details about what happened. the secret service has already fired or otherwise dealt with 12 agents accused of bringing prostitutes to their hotel rooms ahead of the president's trip. >> the allegations are inexcusable and we take them very seriously. >> reporter: homeland security secretary janet napolitano was questioned about the scandal at a senate committee hearing. >> is this the first time this has happened? >> over the past two and a half years, the secret service office of professional responsibility has not received any such complaints. >> reporter: napolitano also said she has no evidence the president's white house advance team was involved in the misconduct.

susan mcginnis, cbs news, washington. the supreme court appears to be ready to allow arizona to enforce its controversial immigration law. the provision requires police officers to check the immigration status of people they think could be in the country illegally, even during a traffic stop. the judges strongly suggested wednesday that they are not siding with the white house. the obama administration argues arizona exceeded its authority. arizona legislators passed the law to drive illegal immigrants out of the stay. according to the governor's office, illegals cost the state almost a billion dollars a year in education, enforcement and extra health care services. the financially strapped postal service may be getting a boost to avoid immediate bankruptcy. the senate pass add bill late last night to give it a $11 bill refund. the money is from over payments made in a federal fund in an effort to pay down its debt f. approved they will have more time to decide whether to end saturday delivery and close about a hundred processing centers. some of the money would also go

to finance a buyout of about 100,000 postal employees. it looks like it's the end of the line for republican presidential candidate newt gingrich after mitt romney's five-state primary sweep tuesday. >> i think obviously that i would be a better candidate, but the objective factor is that the voters didn't think that. >> at a campaign stop yesterday, gingrich said he accepts mitt romney's inevitable nomination and promised to do everything he could to make sure romney is an effective candidate. gingrich is expected to officially end his campaign and throw his support behind romney next tuesday. he won't call it an official endorsement but former presidential candidate rick san santorum says lesupport mitt romney as well. he said romney will be the nominee and the g.o.p. needs to win the race. his campaign -- he's campaigned for mitt romney.

governor mcdonnell says he will do anything he can for romney leaving the door for a possible vice presidential selection. opportunity for virginia launched an ad airing yesterday highlighting mcdonnell's accomplishments. white house party crasher terek salahi is mulling over a bid for mcdonnell's current job. cuccinelli recently filed a lawsuit against salahi accusing him of defrauding winery tour customers. president obama will officially kick off his reelection campaign on may 5 when he'll appear with first lady michele obama at rallies on the campus of ohio state and then virginia commonwealth university. both ohio and virginia are swing states considered important to winning the 2012 election. a tourist from denver killed on the streets of northwest d.c. now investigators are trying to figure out who did it.

66-year-old gary dietrichs was found in a alley tuesday night in the 800 block of emerson street. he was pronounced dead a short time later and detectives say he died of blunt force trauma to the head but they won't be more specific about the case. metro police lieutenant says crimes involving tourists like this are rare. >> we do not optly have very many tourists who are homicide victims. i cannot remember the last case we had at this time where any tourist was the victim of a homicide in washington. >> police say he was staying close to where he was killed and had been in town for a couple weeks. we're told that neighborhood is not a place where tourists normally visit. if you have any information, call metro police. the parents of trayvon martin were in downtown d.c. last night to talk about the loss of their son and their new mission in life. sabrina fulton and tracy martin attended -- is a breen na fulton and tracy martin tended a fund-raiser event.

they hope the case is brought to the forefront. >> we've already lost trayvon. we know trayvon will never come back but whatever the outcome is of the trial, obviously it's to make sure there will be no more trayvon martin cases. >> george zimmerman, the neighborhood watch volunteer who shot their son, has been charged with second-degree murder. he is now out on bond. the mystery of the missing vicious dogs from northeast washington has apparently been solved. last friday night two dogs attacked several people on queen street before getting away. >> they weren't free for very long. matt jablow has the unusual details in this. >> reporter: for five days now, a lot of people have been wondering what happened to two vicious dogs in northeast washington who attacked several children and then mauled a man who came to the children's defense before the dogs were beaten off by a neighbor with a baseball bat. it now appears we have learned what happened to the dogs after they got away. >> the one that came after me was the biggest one.

he was probably about 130 pounds. >> reporter: they were caught and one of them shot by detective jarod towers of the cheverly police department in prince george's county. >> bizarre. >> reporter: it was around 12:30 saturday morning, just a few hours after the dog attack in northeast washington. that's when detective towers says while on routine patrol he came across a car parked right in the middle of states street. the driver of the car told detective towers he was on the phone with 911 to report two injured dogs in the middle of the road. >> he was -- it was just me and the dog in the open. >> reporter: detective towers said one of the dogs came after him. >> after i took a couple steps back, the dog lunged at me. i fired one shot striking the dog in the chest. >> reporter: he said the dog he shot then jumped in an open door of his patrol car still as ornery as ever. >> scratching at my window. >> reporter: both dogs were taken to prince george's county animal control where they were euthanized. >> they were both injured. >> reporter: detective towers says he's certain the dogs he caught were the same dogs involved in the northeast

i'll be back with the forecast. right now monika is in with time saver traffic. everything looks great but 22nd between h and i because of a water main break yesterday, they are having issues on the road between h and i. just go ahead and take h instead. in my next report, a closer look at area roads at 4:47. >> thank you, monika. 4. 41. time for the first your money segment of the morning. >> here's jessica doyle with the headlines. not a bad day yesterday. >> very good day. nice rally for wall street. if only apple could report blowout earnings every single day. the nasdaq is coming off of its biggest one-day gain of the year, up more than 2% as apple surged by about $50 a share or 9%. checking the numbers the dow stands this morning at 13,090. it added 89 points in trading yesterday. nasdaq up by 68 points. and the s&p 500 was better by about 19. in the meantime the federal reserve says while the economy is seeing moderate growth, europe continues to be a risk to recovery.

after two-day meeting. fed policymakers pledged to keep interest rates low through at least late 2014 but said they're not ready to take any further steps to boost the economy. foreclosures are on the rise and 26 of the 50 largest metropolitan areas. a new survey found foreclosure activity increased the most last quarter in pittsburgh, indianapolis, philadelphia and new york. experts say it's a sign that a backlog of foreclosures are finally starting to hit the market. you'd say the upside here is that means we're finally going to clear out this foreclosure problem but we have so many more new ones in the pipeline this year that the problem isn't going away any time soon. our time is 4:42. d.c. sports fans, today is definitely your day. the nats, the cap, the wizards, they all won last night. >> we have highlights from all of them. that's coming up in just a little bit.

mild. a lot milder than yesterday with temps in the 50s. that sunrise at 6:16. we'll have a chance for a couple showers, maybe a rumble of thunder. best chance of that i think is going to be midday. temperatures will eventually get to the upper 60s to even maybe low 70s if we can squeeze out a little sunshine this afternoon. winds go southeast to southwest 10 to 15 miles annual hour. looking at the doppler this morning and you can see all of this rain off to the south of us really passing down mainly south of interstate 64 but the showers and storms go back into ohio. some of these have been on the hefty side this morning, even northern ohio. so we're going to watch this whole area move off toward the east, southeast so that's why midday we could be looking at some showers and storl. this morning spot -- and storms. this morning spotty showers mainly north of town coming across interstate 70. some have dipped into montgomery county and howard county. temperatures a lot warmer than yesterday. yesterday morning we had low 30s, frost advisories. this morning generally in the

50s, even 60 in fredricksburg. it is 46 in york and philly is at 48 this morning. but lots of 50s. locally we're down to 50 in leesburg. 51 in reston. it's 53 at fort belvoir. arlington 55. off to the east got some lower 50s here toward columbia and bwi. on our michael & son weather camera, still good visibility under cloudy skies. 59 degrees with a light easterly wind at about 3 miles an hour. the humidity at 60%. the barometer sitting at 29.83. likely dropping today as this little area of low pressure sliding to our south this morning. the bigger picture, we have storms even up into michigan this morning. so everything moving off to the southeast and east. -- south and east. we'll see what pops across us during the middle of the day and the afternoon hours. we may even get some sunny breaks. then another line of showers will be coming through sometime looks like during the evening, early nighttime hours and then that will pass us.

safe emergency landing after two geese hit the windshield. >> this happened tuesday night just moments after takeoff from westchester county airport in new york. the florida bound flight then declared an emergency. no one was hurt in the emergency landing. the 54 passengers were moved to another plane which landed safely at palm beach international airport later that same night. but some of them did describe the experience. >> the plane started swerving immediately right after the two hit. so he was walking the -- rocking the plane back and forth and we knew something was going on. i'm going to die. i'm not going to see my family and get home. but i'm okay and i'm very thankful that everything turned out very well. >> a similar incident happened last thursday when at least one bird got sucked into the engine of a delta flight. the plane safely returned to the airport. words of praise for a very bold 12-year-old hero in california. connor kroeger was a passenger in his grandmother's car when

the big picture coming up at 5:01. back to you. medium mogul rupert murdoch wants to set the record straight in his testimony at britain's high court. >> he faced some pretty tough questions about the close ties between his media and politicians. we explain why people believe those relationships could have actually led to that phone hacking scandal. >> reporter: rupert murdoch seemed relaxed as he took a seat at a government hearing. the media giant insisted he is not angry at britain's prime minister for dragging him into it. >> i welcome the opportunity. >> reporter: murdoch defended his reputation as head of news corporation and denied telling editors which british politicians to support. revelations murdoch's company spied on public figures and hacked phones of murder victims to get information have sparked public outrage. the 81-yard media mogul took to
