joining us. i'm jc hayward. we are waiting word from metro at this hour on proposals to approve hefty fare hikes to close a large budget deficit. occasional riders and those without smart cards will be hit the hardest. under the latest proposal, the base peak fare on metrorail would increase from $1.95 to $2.10. the maximum peak fare would go up by 75 cents to $5.75. and the base off-peak charge would increase an additional 10 cents to $1.70. the maximum off-peak fare hike would be $3.50. bus fares would increase by 10 cents. and it would cost an additional 25 cents to park at metro garages. metro says that the hikes will help close a $103 million budget gap. they're counting on increased funds from maryland, virginia and the district to soak up most of the red ink.

three men were seriously injured this morning in a violent crash on route 4 in upper marlboro. according to police, an suv was traveling the wrong way on the road. the vehicle struck a utility van and then a pickup truck before flipping over. the driver of the pickup is the most seriously injured. route 4 was closed for several hours. it has since reopened. baltimore police say that they have solved the mystery of felicia -- phylicia barnes murder. her body was found in the susquehanna river last april. she was in maryland visiting her half sister. last night police charged michael johnson with that murder. police say that he was barnes' half sister's former boyfriend. d.c. police say they cannot remember the last time that a tourist was murdered in the city until now.

66-year-old gary dederich of denver was found unconscious in an alley. he was later pronounced dead. he worked for many years as a nurse in colorado. reporter will ripley from our sister station in denver spoke with people who knew him. >> reporter: two blocks from du. >> yeah. >> reporter: you'll find it on a corner. >> it always looks like this. >> reporter: a nice yard, a garden, a fence. >> if you look at wait he kept his house and his yard, he had a lot of self-worth. >> reporter: gary dederich was 66, a retired registered nurse, a volunteer. by all account as good guy. >> gary lived his life as well as any christian could. >> reporter: his life ended in northwest washington, d.c., a few miles from the national landmarks he was there to visit. >> basically touring the city. >> reporter: he died from blunt force trauma to the head in an alley near the place he'd been renting for the past two weeks. >> we are looking into the

potential that it was annual attempted robbery. >> reporter: he gave his time to a nonprofit in denver that empowered senior citizens to stay in their homes as they get older just like he did. >> after he retired as a nurse, he spent a significant amount of time still caring for his neighbors and folks that didn't live just right in his own neighborhood. >> i think it's a tragedy. >> reporter: neighbors say they'll miss having gary around. >> it's just not fair. >> reporter: always out in the yard, waving hello, no matter who was passing by. >> we always talked about how nice it was that we could see over the fence so that we could see each other. >> reporter: police did notify gary's next of kin. neighbors never saw family orvis tores stop by. >> he was really a very private person. >> reporter: private but they say personable, an asset to this neighborhood, someone they're sad to see go. >> the people that you live around are the people that you live your life with. and you need to know your neighbors. >> if you have any information about this case, d.c. police would like to hear from you.

there is a $25,000 reward in the case. deliberations are under way in the trial of five men accused of multiple murders. the so-called south capital street shootings left five people dead and several others injured in 2010. jurors in the two-month long trial must sort through testimony from more than 100 witnesses and scores of charges. the defense in the michael garden trial molestation trial is under way. three young girls accuse gardner of molesting them during his daughter's slumber party at his falls church home. yesterday an 11-year-old testified that she woke up to find gardner touching her comforter and then he touched her through her pajamas on three separate occasions during the night. a military judge in fort meade, maryland is expected to rule today whether she will dismiss any of the individual

temperatures now in downtown 60. 61 in manassas. 58 for leesburg. we should be making it into the upper 60s, close to 70 degrees for the rest of today. so keep the umbrella handy tucked away just in case as you're heading home later tonight. temperatures topping out in the upper 60s, close to 70 degrees. i'll let you know when the rain is out of here and take a look at your weekend forecast. back you to, jc. >> thank you, anny. john edwards' former aide is back on the witness stand today at his one-time boss' trial. the former presidential candidate is accused of using campaign donations to cover up an extramarital affair. dick brennan has more now from greensboro, north carolina. >> reporter: andrew young arrived at the courthouse to face more blistering cross- examination on his fourth day of testimony. john edwards' defense attorney is trying to poke holes in his credibility by accusing the prosecution's star witness of making up stories. edwards is charged with

violating campaign finance laws in order to cover up his affair with rielle hunter. this morning testimony revealed that edwards once gave hunter his atm card but when his wife elizabeth saw a large withdrawal, it, quote, set off an alarm. edwards made an excuse to cover it up but asked young to handle rielle's finances after that. >> john edwards needs to convince the jury that either andrew young is lying and therefore can't be trusted on the stand or that he has some reason to dislike john edwards. >> reporter: young has avoided eye contact throughout his testimony while edwards stairs directly at him. >> it is clear andrew young versus john edwards is the turning point of the trial. >> reporter: in cross- examination, the defense asked young if he was the source for the national enquirer which broke the story. young said he was not. young testified that edwards asked him to pretend to be the father of hunter's baby and keep the affair a secret but he said it became a nightmare running errands for hunter and let her stay in his house. he had access to nearly a

million dollars in donations to cover the cost. the critical question is whether that was a gift from supporters used to hide a mistress or whether it was campaign money to keep edwards in the race. dick brennan for cbs news, greensboro, north carolina. >> the john edwards trial is expected to last for six weeks. it now appears that the two dogs involved in a brutal attack in washington, d.c. are dead. this video made national news. two dogs attacked children in northeast washington and then they went after a man who was trying to protect the children. the dogs were finally chased away by another man with a baseball bat. a cheverly, maryland police officer tells us that he found the dogs on patrol saturday morning. at least one of them went after him and he shot that dog. both dogs were taken by animal control and put down. we have some important

all this month we've been celebrating national donate life month. be an organ donator. it's very easy. all you have to do is sign up when you get your new driver's license or you renew your driver's license. if you want more information, contact the washington regional transplant community. with me now is deshaun mcmillan. her mother was waiting for a liver transplant. unfortunately she did not get that transplant and we're sorry to say that your mother passed away. but you certainly know the importance of people donating organs. it could have saved your mother's life. >> yes. >> tell me a little bit about your mother. >> my mom, she was a washingtonian. she grew up here. actually she worked right at the department of motor vehicles in downtown d.c. she

caught hepatitis and the hepatitis came from her actually receiving a blood transfusion back in the '70s when blood wasn't tested as well as it is now. she found out in 2000 that she would need a liver transplant. at the time, you know, i was helping, trying to take care of her. i was trying to learn what i was up against, didn't really know what i was up against. we were trying to go from there but certainly i didn't think that she would pass away. but as time went along, there was no available donor. as you know, we don't have enough people actually signed up to be organ donors. so she wound up fighting for her life and she lost her life in 2005. >> you are very passionate about this now. your mother died because she didn't get a donor but you are now volunteering? >> yes.

i volunteer with the washington regional transplant community. also i started my own foundation called saving a life campaign which my mom, her name, i started a campaign in memory of her where i go around and i raise awareness about organ tissue donation. >> it's so important. i've had people on the show this week where they've been organ donors and they say three, four, five -- they save three, four, five people's lives. it's so important. i can't impress upon viewers enough that it's very simple. you go to the motor vehicle's administration when you're renewing your driver's license. you just check the box and say yes, i want to be a donor. i had a young girl that was 12 years old that was a donor and her family was just so happy that she had made this decision at an early life. >> it's very important because a lot of times you just don't know what you're up against. you don't know what situation

that may come before you. currently you have 114,000 people on a waiting list and you have 18 people who die a day who are actually waiting. unfortunately my mom fell within that 18. but it's simple as going to the dmv, signing up, or you can also -- you can go online and register. >> thank you for coming and sharing your mother's story. and i hope that this story will help someone else. that's what we're praying for. be an organ donor. anny hong is standing by. she has the forecast. >> i'll let you know when the showers end and how much cooler we get. your 9news at noon weather is next after the break.

after some pretty good showers this morning, especially in the northern neck, southern maryland. you can see some light sprinkles around winchester, north of town and right now we just have cloudy skies. the skies will stay gray for the rest of today. temperatures in the lower 60s in college park and downtown. upper 50s for bethesda and gaithersburg and we're going to warm up to around upper 60s, maybe some spots getting close to 70 degrees. right now 60 in downtown under cloudy skies. the winds are out of the south at 7 miles per hour. that southerly wind will help get us into temperatures in the upper 60s. you'll see a -- it will seem a little mild out there. satellite radar, here it s. -- it is. we have a chance of severe weather west and damaging wind gusts and also some hail, especially south. you can see the areas shaded in yellow down from charleston, even into norfolk, where they can see some severe weather. but d.c. area, we are not

believes in healthy living, has a cookbook coming out soon. you're making what today? >> we're doing hanger steak tacos. first thing we want to do, we want to create a marinade for the meat. first thing you want to do, you want to add worcestershire sauce. >> what kind of meat? >> hanger. a lot of people don't know about t. it's really good, easy to marinade. you can grill it, broil it. it's very tasty. then we'll add about a tablespoon of apple sider vinegar. then we're going to add in some olive oil. >> this recipe is on jchayward.com. >> cracked pepper. >> you can get the recipe. don't try to write it all down. >> and a little bit of salt. then we're going to add some garlic powder and some cumin. and then some chili powder to give it a little kick.

>> wow. you mix that up and you -- do you put it in the refrigerator? >> yes, i would recommend if you can let it marinade for 24 hours and the meat will be really tender. if not, if you're trying to do something fast, 30 minutes. after that is double, then you would let it marinade, put it on the pan to broil or you can grill it. >> broil or grill it. this is the way it looks when it's finished. >> yes, ma'am. >> what did do you with this? >> basically i just took it and cut it on the bias and then you have the chunks of meat to go in the taco. i broiled this. moving forward, now we're growing to make our pica degallo. >> gosh, it smells so good. >> thank you. >> these are golden tomatoes. >> yes. a little bit of red onion and our cilantro. then a little bit of jalapeno. then we're going to add a little garlic powder while you're stirring that up.
