woman. both are still in the hospital with serious injuries. police say all three were walking alone at the time they were attacked. all were hit in the head. >> all three of the victims did suffer pretty significant blunt force trauma to the head and preliminarily it appears that the victims may have been attacked suddenly without provocation. >> police are asking anybody with information, give them a call. they're offering a $25,000 reward for help leading to an arrest. a man is in custody in prince george's county tonight in connection with an assault and robbery at a daycare center. it happened around 10:30 this morning at the it's a family affair daycare on garrett morgan boulevard in landover. 26-year-old michael tyrone young walked in with a bat and asked to use a phone. a security guard tried to take the bat, but police say young started to hit him with it. young took an employee's car and fled. he was later arrested. the security guard needed surgery for broken bones in his

face. luckily no children were involved in the attack. tonight is the night redskins fans have waited months to get here, the first round of the nfl draft. it starts in less than an hour. the redskins have the no. 2 pick and they're expected to take baylor's heisman trophy winning quarterback robert griffin, iii. we have team coverage following the big day for burgundy and gold. kristen berset is at redskins park, but we start with derek mcginty just outside radio music hall. >> reporter: just call him rg3. everybody else does or call him the future perhaps. the redskins are hoping that's exactly what he will be when in about an hour they make him their first second no. 2 pick in the draft since anybody can remember, perhaps in history. as you said, an hour from now in that building there, radio city music hall. the redskins hope in one fell swoop to turn their entire

franchise around. welcome to primetime, the nfl draft just a few hours from kickoff on the biggest brightest stage in the world, but tonight those words go straight to the hearts and hopes of redskins fans who believe drafting robert griffin, iii means welcome back to the big time and your brand- new franchise quarterback and if all these lights and crowds and even the football music on the red carpet isn't just for us, well, maybe they should be. so i know you're thinking who actually shows up for the nfl draft? of course, there's reporters like me and after that it's pretty much dudes in jerseys. >> rg3! >> reporter: and it didn't take long to find a burgundy and gold. >> absolutely exciting. i might not show it now, but when i get inside, i'm going to go bananas. >> reporter: chris drove up from laurel. he comes every year. what's different about this year? >> what do you think, man that, no. 2 pick, the face of our

the teams hoping to pick them a little later on. coach mike shanahan and gm bruce allen are not here and for what they're doing we turn to kristen berset live at redskins park. >> reporter: shanahan, allen and dan snyder hunkered down in the war room in ashburn getting ready for the no. 2 pick, but also to see what the rest of the teams are doing as they head into a weekend full of draft picks. when you look at rg3 and mike shanahan, you couldn't have more two different personalities, shanahan more stoic and serious, rg3 more exuberant and vibrant, but nonetheless shanahan thinks they will make a winning combination, that rg3 will that be franchise quarterback the redskins fans have waited for for so long, but he also knows nothing is a given. >> when you're talking about a franchise quarterback, you're looking at a guy that really has all the physical and mental attributes that you're looking for in a quarterback and now he's got to go out and do it on

the field. >> reporter: we're also hearing rg3 will spend the evening in new york and make his way to ashburn tomorrow afternoon to meet with his brand-new team officials. live at redskins park in ashburn, i'm kristen berset. back to you in the studio. >> can feel the excitement back here. thanks. on to other news, more allegations involving secret service agents following the scandal in colombia. the secret service is now investigating whether agents hired strippers and prostitutes in advance of president obama's trip last year to el salvador. reporter chris holsney from our sister station traveled to el salvador and spoke with a u.s. government subcontractor he says he partied with agents at a strip club there days before the president and his family arrived. >> our witness tells us he repeatedly saw the secret service agents exchange money for sexual favors within the club and on at least two occasions those agents took escorts back to their hotel rooms. >> the secret service has

issued a statement saying any information brought to our attention that can be assessed as credible will be followed up on in an appropriate manner. metro users get ready to shell out more money for your ride, those proposed fare hikes now reality. metro's board of directors voted to approve them today and raise the price for all riders. >> reporter: i'm kristin fisher outside metro's headquarters where the board has just approved a systemwide rate hike. rail fares are going up by 5%. bus fares are increasing by 10 cents and parking fees are going to go up by 25 cents starting july 1st. >> it's absolutely not paper. >> reporter: metro riders not happy but not surprised by the second rate hike in under two years. >> in the past we've had the increases, too and things haven't improved. >> reporter: but metro's general manager richard sarles says the money is needed to

help close a $100 million budget gap. >> what the fare increase does is provide additional rush hour service during peak period, improve our maintenance. >> reporter: nearly 50 disabled riders packed headquarters ahead of the vote urging the board to reconsider. >> i need metro access. it can happen to you. just reevaluate. >> reporter: the board agreed to reevaluate at a later date, about the for now these fare increases will impact all metro access riders. kristin fisher, 9 news now. >> our weather can't seem to get in sync this week it. cools off when the skies are clear and when is it going to warm and when do we get the rain? >> we're in a cycle of a day at a time, one day nice, one day wet. that will continue for a while until we get into more of a spring-like pattern next week. let's start with live doppler 9000. there are some showers barely making it over the mountains. this has weakened considerably as it moved across i-81 now headed towards leesburg. you're headed out route 7, you

might run into a light shower and that shower inching into maryland across southern sections of frederick county and also northwestern sections of montgomery county. it's going to dry out before it gets into the beltway. again maybe you see a sprinkle out toward fairfax maybe as far south as gaithersburg on the maryland side. right now 64, 64 gaithersburg, 66 manassas, 67 fredericksburg. in fact, some of these are current temperatures warm as it's been all day. we've had a little spot of sunshine. tonight recall shower possible but clearing, breezy and chilly, lows 42 to 50, winds increasing northwest 10 to 20 when the front goes through. we come back and talk about just what it's going to feel like tomorrow with those northwest winds and have an updated weekend forecast as well. still to come a young teen battling blindness inspires friends and family to raise money for a great cause. >> but first a dying veteran told to not fly by his doctors is denied a refund for his plane ticket.

a vietnam veteran dying of cancer now fighting more than just his disease, he's also trying to get his money back from spirit airlines. back in march jerry meekins booked a flight to new jersey to visit his daughter who was having surgery, but i found out his cancer spread and he only -- he found out his cancer spread and he only had a few months to live. his doctors don't want him to

fly, so he asked for a refund. the airlines said no. >> i offered confirmation from my oncologist, from hospice and even my prepaid funeral package. they didn't want to look at any of it or hear about it. they just wanted to keep the money. >> and, in fact, spirit released a statement saying, "our reservations are nonrefundable which means we don't do refunds and we are not going to issue mr. meekins a refund." now other veterans are joining him to picket the airline to change the policy for sick and dying customers. >> the rain is drying out and so are our temps. topper's full springtime forecast is coming up. >> but first he gave his life in the line of duty at virginia tech and today the nation honored the sacrifice of officer deriek crouse.

[ bagpipes playing ] a virginia tech police officer honored today after giving his life in the line of duty. officer deriek crouse was shot and killed by a radford university student during a traffic stop on the blacksburg campus. anny hong at the solemn ceremony where the national honor was unveiled. >> reporter: flowers had been left in honor of officer deriek crouse. his name has been added to the national law enforcement officers memorial here in washington d.c. it's a tribute so that nobody will ever forget

the ultimate sacrifice he paid. [ bagpipes ] >> reporter: the emotion was still raw. family and friends of virginia tech officer deriek crouse gathered to remember the 39- year-old husband and father of five. his wife tina and 16-year-old son dustin joined colleagues as they spoke of crouse's love of the steelers, his job and most of all, his family, a family that included four stepsons. >> but when he was home, he liked to play and he loved to watch the pittsburgh steelers on television. he loved to ride his motorcycle. and he loved to listen to the band metallica. >> reporter: crouse's commitment to service and the need for sacrifice and in crouse's case it was the ultimate sacrifice of his life on december 8th when he was shot and killed by a 22-year- old student who then took his own life shortly after. >> it brings back all the memories of december 8th. serving as acting chief that

day, i feel very responsible. >> reporter: as the unveiling ceremony ended, crouse's wife, son and colleagues all took an etching of the fallen officer's engraved name. it's one more keepsake to add to their collection of memories. >> he was a man who loved life and was incredibly vital. he brought a profound sense of humor and lightness to a job that can involve drudgery and the worst that mankind has to offer and deriek was always a bright spot within the department. >> reporter: crouse joined some nearly 20,000 is ofs who are part of this national memorial -- officers who are part of this national memorial. next month 3,200 officers will be dedicated during a candlelight vigil here. now to a terrific show of support for a young man overcoming obstacles. today hundreds of students joined in a fundraising walk in brandywine maryland to raise research money to fight blindness and to show personal support for a classmate, 14-

year-old bjorn brooks who has a condition leaving him legally blind, but he's always looking at the positive side of things. >> sometimes i think about i won't be able to drive, but i think by the time i am able to drive they'll have a car that vision impaired people can drive. so i just try to find alternatives to whoever is wrong. >> great attitude. did we mention bjorn is president of his 8th grade class and will co-chair an annual fundraising walk in baltimore this summer. somebody tonight out there is a burglar with a small fortune in bras and panties from victoria secret. the burglar stole them from a woman who owned all those fancy underthings. on monday that woman left her madison street apartment in annapolis unlocked while she took her daughter to the school bus. the burglar came in and quickly made off with an estimated $650 worth of lingerie as well as cell phones and 400 bucks in

cash. >> whoa. it sounds like an inside job. >> did he go looking for them? it's hard to know. >> not that i'm dick tracy or anything, but it sounds like an inside job. all right. mid-60s today, a little below average. >> it was kind of icky. >> but we're going to finish the week on a bright note, just a little chilly, go another 24 hour pattern and flip it again and go back to a wet day saturday. let's start with a live look outside. there are some breaks in the clouds off to the west. temperatures, mid-60s, still 64 downtown, winds south, southwest at 9 that. tells us the front is still to our west. pressure is trying to raise at 29.62 inches of mercury, that live shot brought to you by michael and son. live doppler 9000, we'll zoom into this son. this sort of popped up around hagerstown. it's a pretty heavy little town. it's going to cross 40, head towards hagerstown. it's raining there now but nothing like what's coming.

looks like this will hold together and cross 81 and produce heavy rain for hagerstown, nothing severe, but rainfall rates could be 1 inch per hour indicated in red as this slides off south and east this. storm is dying out. we showed you this earlier, a little rain south of dickerson toward poolesville and will move off towards boyd and germantown and make a sprinkle in darnestown. we'll widen the radar out and put this in motion. where is this one going in the next hour? it's going to work its way to the south and east. it will weaken, but it will make it between thurmont and frederick and cockeysville. so a couple showers around but few and far between. essentially we're looking at drier air later tonight and clearing skies. 63 in gaithersburg, 63 bethesda. in some regard these temps are good to be in the 60s because that's keeping down the development of these storms. 66 college park, 64 in reston

and leesburg. staying cool to chilly the next three days, clearing to chilly tonight. knead a jacket tomorrow, breezy and -- need jacobs tomorrow, breezy and cool all -- a jacket tomorrow, breezy and cool all day tomorrow. early shower possible, clearing, breezy and chilly, 42 to 50 for lows. tomorrow morning we're looking at mostly sunny skies, breezy, a jacket, temps in the 40s and 50s and by afternoon partly cloudy, breezy, kind of cool, a bright day. high temperatures in the low 60s. next seven days just light rain on saturday, not a huge storm like last week. so we'll hope to see you out there at college park. the campus is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. i'll be out there in the afternoon. then sunday nights we're back to 61 but -- night we're back to 61 and 70s on tuesday,

but where's the fun in that? two women in indiana are taking american soldiers back to their childhoods with their unique care packages. we'll hear how they're trying to make a soldier smile. >> silly string. >> these sticky frogs, anything nerf. >> reporter: it sounds like a kid's dream. >> water balloons are good for the desert. >> reporter: but all of this silly stuff is actually going overseas to our soldiers. >> i don't like to send boring things. >> reporter: not one to settle for ordinary, kelly muhollack started sending crazy care packages to her own husband in the military. >> they get cookies and candy galore. they get so much food they really can't eat it all. so i would send silly string and bubbles. >> reporter: it was such a hit she and co-worker christy chapman at iupui created make a soldier smile. they collect silly things,

temporary tattoos, toys, even romance novels. >> of course. it's got fabio on it. >> reporter: they've managed to send three shipments of hundreds of goodies to local soldier overseas. balloons and temporary tattoos are great, but we're told what soldiers really like are gag gifts like this electronic whoopie cushion so that they can play pranks on each other. >> so much of the time you do what you're doing is extremely important and extremely serious that when you do have the down time, you really want to go -- like to be a 10-year-old again. >> reporter: jim gurly is based in afghanistan and says soldiers go nut for this stuff because it helps them relax. >> you don't want to say it's a break from reality. it's a break to a different reality because your norm is so intense. >> reporter: so while it all might seem silly, kelly and christy say it really is all
