it's awesome. welcome to 9news now at 5:00 a.m. andrea, mike, monika and i'm howard. we're so busy talking about jason siegel. we have a good day today, sunshine. windy conditions especially this morning. the winds will be breezy we'll call it. temperatures in the mid-50s by noon. we'll climb to the lower 60s. right now 53 in d.c. with 40s north and west. we are looking at a front that came through last night. you can see the line of showers. heavier northeastern maryland as it came right through us. a couple of sprinkles there. this morning we cleared out but the winds have been gusty. over 30 miles an hour at times. dropping temperatures into the 40s. many areas north and west. mid-40s in hagerstown out into western maryland. we're 53 here. andrews down to 51. patuxent river 58 behind our 9. 22 miles an hour here in washington but 32 in cambridge.

monika santami, it is 5:00 a.m. how is our traffic looking? not too bad for a friday morning. things are looking great. it's friday morning light everybody. that's a good thing. if you're planning to head out to the beltway early this morning to get to work, i don't think shoe have any big problems. -- you should have any big problems. looking good coming in from baltimore, bw parkway, route 50 and annapolis. there had been overnight construction on the outer loop approaching the bw parkway. that should be cleared now. let's take a live look outside at the beltway at university boulevard. traffic still moving very well on the outer loop heading westbound through silver spring and into bethesda. let's go back over to the maps. this time to the other side over in from frederick, i-70, 270, no problems to report all the way down to the point where the lanes divide. we'll take a live look in virginia on the northbound side of i-95. no problems here in springfield on to 395 and the 14th street bridge. coming up in my next report, a closer look at virginia roads at 5:09. back to you. with the second pick in the

2012 n.f.l. draft, the washington redskins select robert griffin iii. >> with those words washington fans can now officially welcome the young man they hope will become their franchise quarterback. >> it is exciting in washington. redskins originally had the sixth pick but traded up to number two so they could get rgiii. they also gave away picks. delia goncalves joins us live from new carrollton with how the skins fans are reacting. it's not hard to predict. good morning, delia. >> reporter: good morning. it's going to abpretty exciting day -- to be a pretty exciting day. the morning commute and all the trains will be buzzing with rgiii talk even though it was very is expected that the skins were going to pick rgiii. it was still a very exciting night for washington. we didn't even have to wait. it was the number two pick so the suspense didn't have to kill you all night waiting for the official pick. the question is now can rgiii live up to the hype?

the redskins traded a big risk for a very big reward in robert griffin iii. the heisman trophy winner was pressuretive and already showing his love and gratitude by wearing some special burgundy and gold socks last night. fans and cheerleaders who gathered at a local restaurant watching the draft were elated when the pick was official. our derek mcginty was in new york. he spoke to the future qb right after the pick. >> when i heard them say robert griffin iii has been selected by the washington redskins, it meant something to me. i tried to live in the moment. in college i was the quarterback, the leader, the face of the college program. now you have to go to the pros and realize you start down here, not up here. even if you are a franchise quarterback or a top pick, you still have to start here and prove to the veterans that they can trust in you because if they don't trust you, they won't play for you. >> reporter: those super bowl dreams that folks are already

at area roads at 5:16. here's what's making news now at 5:10 this morning. they should have kept the highway closed. that is the conclusion of a new report after crashes kill 11 people on a florida highway back in january. fog filled up i-75. the highway patrol closed the highway. the fog cleared. they opened it again. unfortunately the fog came back. that's when the crashes happened. the fog and smoke if a nearby wildfire quickly made it impossible for drivers to see. there are new allegations about secret service agents paying for sex this time in el salvador. a government subcontractor says he saw the agents exchange for sexual favors inside a strip club days before the president and family arrived. as the rain falls in idaho, it accelerates the smelting winter snow pack. water covers several roadways

good morning. welcome back to 9news now on this friday morning. it's 5:14. we're happy to elyou it's friday -- to tell you it's friday. next week prepare for 80s. >> may starts next week. it's about time to get out of this weird funk gi weather we've been -- funky weather we've been having. we're still in the hole rain wise. even though we had the rain earlier in the week and the weekend it's still enough to get rid of all the rain problems. we'll get a little more starting tomorrow afternoon. today it's going to be a sunny day. a brisk morning for you. jackets and gloves i think. some folks northwest might even want to put a little had on because we've got temps there in the lower 50s and even windchills dipping into the 30s now. mainly clear, blustery. some of the gusts have been 30 miles an hour or so. sunrise at 6:15. we are looking at a sunny and

breezy to windy day. northwest winds at 15 to 20. lunch time temperatures in the mid-50s. looks like your lunch hour, recess for the kids, sweat shirts for sure. a little wind breaker. then this afternoon 61 at 4:00. still with a northwest wind. look at that, 19. could be gusting to 30 miles an hour at times. by 8:00 we're back in the 50s. winds will slacken tonight as we dip into the upper 30s and 40s. this morning we've dipped into the 40s north and west of town. in fact mid-40s here. oakland and garrett county, they're 3,000 feet, 32. still some mid-50s down south in tappahannock, patuxent river naval irritation is at 58 while in -- naval air station is at 58 while we're 53 in town. the strongest winds seem to be just east of us now. we've got gusts up to 25 in the martinsburg area and 22 in frederick. and here in washington. you can see the flags around the capitol on our michael & son weather camera, they are

standing proud this morning. 53, clear skies, northwest wind at 15, gusting 22 as we said and the humidity at 45%. the barometer is jumping up once again. it's been a tough week with the pressure changes for those who are sensitive on that more of that to deal with over the weekend thanks to what's going on in the middle of the country. you can see this little twist in the clouds here coming east of denver now responsible for the strong to severe thunderstorms. the rain pushing toward iowa and minnesota and the dakotas. that moisture is going to be scooting off to the east. we're going to see a little bit of it tomorrow i think mid- to late afternoon tomorrow. this morning a northwesterly flow so the winds will keep us dry and cool and sunny. here we are at 5:45. a few clouds in west virginia. the clouds will thicken up overnight. looks like tomorrow in the afternoon when we could start see something of those showers push in. but that's better than what we were looking at yesterday when i thought the showers would be here in the morning. so we may get through much of maryland day cloudy but without

the showers. 62 today. tonight we're in the 40s. a few 30s. 50s tomorrow with the afternoon and nighttime showers but the sun is back on sunday, 64. by monday we're looking at 70 degrees with an isolated shower or a few more showers tuesday. then warm with the potential for the afternoon thunderstorm wednesday and thursday. yes, 85 my forecast high both days. monika santami, 5:17, tgif. oh, yes, tgif. feels like it's been a long week. we had a lot of different accidents all week long, things going on on the major thoroughfares but i'm happy to say this friday morning i don't have that kind of news now. if you're planning to head on the northbound side of 95 in virginia you're doing fine. from dale city into woodbridge, no problems into springfield and over to 395. a live look there right now on the northbound side. quiet it seminary and king heading to the potomac river. let's go back to the maps this time to southern maryland. all of your major thoroughfares are great. no problems on route 4, 5, 301

million a year. 5:35. time for another your money report now. >> jessica is talking about credit cards and making them safer for us. >> that's exactly right n. is a big crackdown on websites that reportedly were selling stolen credit card numbers. we saw the justice department saying an international investigation has resulted in the shutdown of 36 websites. a federal magistrate in alexandria ordered the website seizures. this investigation included undercover purchases of stolen credit card numbers. we're hearing it may be a first of its kind investigation. shares of amazon.com are up more than 10% before the bell this morning. that's after the online retailing giant posted first quarter profits that blew past analyst estimates. sales topped $13 billion, strong demand for its kindle e- read are the biggest factor here. starbucks' profits jumped 18% last quarter. more customers visited stores around the world. they also plan to open a

something that's coming in bloom now that wasn't a few weeks ago. rain on the way for the weekend and we can use it. we are still looking at some big deficits. we have 7.3 inches in d.c. 7.2 at dulles but we're still 4, 4 and a half inches in the hole. a little better in martinsburg. they're 2.88 inches underneath where they should be for the year. we need to make some progress and get those numbers closer to zero, the white numbers that is closer to zero. our bus stop forecast today, it is a brisk morning out there. it is blustery i'm calling it because there's a cold wind now blowing out of the northwest dropping temps into the 40s. we're holding on to some 50s barely in spots. d.c. and points south. today it's going to be a sunny day but a windy and cool day with temperatures even midday not moving much from this morning into the mid-50s. northwest winds at 20. can gust 30 at times. then this afternoon we'll try to get into the lower 60s still with the northwest winds at 15

to 20, gusting 25 to 30 miles an hour. you can see what's happening. big storms still in eastern canada. the front came through last night. had a couple of showers also, especially north of town during the early or late evening, early nighttime hours. look at cold up to the north and west. it's 38 in pittsburgh. 40 if cleveland. 45 cumberland. that's all being drawn south and east on the brink northwesterly winds. in fact, we've got mid-40s as close as centreville at 46. gaithersburg is at 46. we've got 49 in sterling. 50 in manassas. the warmer temperatures if you will the low 50s coming in from college park at 51. upper marlboro is 53 and alexandria at 52. outside on our michael & son weather camera, just starting to see a little light off to the east. the sunrise happens about 6:15 this morning. the capitol looks good. 53 degrees, clear skies. northwest winds at 15, gusting to 22. the dew point in the low 30s as the air drying out for the moment behind that front last

night. we'll stay sunny all day today. here we are at 6:00'. still looking good. a few clouds starting to come in during the overnight from west to east. we wake up mostly cloudy. the clouds will be with us through lunch time here but showers out west. they arrive in the afternoon and will be with us with luck late afternoon. it will be with us for part of saturday night. the forecast today we're looking at temps in the low 60s. 40s tonight. maybe some 30s. upper 50s tomorrow with showers developing in the afternoon and evening. sunday sun returns, 64. then we get warm. maybe some showers by tuesday but warm wednesday and thursday in the 80s. a couple of things to tell you about right now and if you're planning to head to the north side of town, you'll want to know that in wheaton on veers mere road near connecticut avenue, there were wires down, low hanging wires. police are on the scene there directing traffic. just be aware of that. otherwise the beltway looking fine. no problems from college park into silver spring. we'll take a live look there at georgia avenue. things still moving well on the outer loop heading westbound

toward this point and over into bethesda. let's go back over to our maps. canal road at fox hall road, the signal lights are not working properly so be careful through that intersection and treat it as a four-way stop or a two-way stop in that intersection. no problems to report dale city into woodbridge. it is a bit slow now lorton into springfield. let's take a live look there where you're also going to have a vow exit to the inner loop -- slow exit to the inner loop. after braddock road there is an accident on the left shoulder. all lanes are open but it's attracting attention. we'll also take a look on the northbound side of i-395. no problems to report to the 14th street bridge. all lanes are open. you have a tiny bit of slow traffic in landmark. coming up in my next report, i'll keep you posted on that accident on the beltway near braddock road. before that despite the dangers, many of us are still texting while driving. in today's extra mile report, northern virginia exercises the importance of putting our attention back on the roads, especially in construction

zones. >> reporter: law enforcement officers were given well deserved awards this week. in virginia the express lanes construction corridor for the 2012 work zone week event. given nearly 15 people die each day in the u.s. due to distracted driving, keeping work zones safe is no easy task. >> they become distracted. they increase their risk for having an accident and unfortunately we've seen the statistics show that people are having fatal accidents. >> reporter: virginia's award winning orange cones no phones campaign has focused on eliminating distracted driving in construction zones since 2009. according to police officers on the front lines, dangerous behaviors in construction zones include speeding, aggressive driving, and disobeying traffic patterns, but cell phone use actually tops the list. the average time it takes to send a text while driving is 5 seconds.

in that time you can drive a football field at 55 miles an hour and the consequences can be devastating. >> we have seen a number of fatal crashes that are the result of people not paying attention, whether it's on the cell phone or either typing or they're doing something else in the vehicle other than concentrating on their driving. >> people have to be aware. they're going 50 to 60 miles an hour and that vehicle could be a deadly weapon very quickly. >> now in northern virginia, several hundred new projects are getting under way so almost every driver encounters a work zone on a daily basis. to quote the ntsb motto, no call no text, no update is worth a human life. you know, guys, any time you drive on the roads, you always see people on their phones still. pretty amazing. >> it is so true. we have more than our share of orange cones around this area. it's a good idea to put it down. >> in northern virginia, almost 1100 workers are working in the 495 express lanes construction

project. 1100 workers. we need to keep them safe. >> i saw a worker kind of step back out of his zone area and that's where the accidents happen if you're not paying attention. one step back but it could have cost him his life. >> the best thing is to put the phone away while in the car. concentrate on the road. >> thanks, monika. making news now at 5:53, police are now searching bodies of water around tucson, arizona trying to find 6-year-old isabel sellas. she disappeared from her home last week. they could not tell if she was kidnapped or wandered away on her own. george zimmerman's finances will be discussed in court in sanford today. he's charged with second-degree murder in the february shooting death of trayvon martin, an unarmed black teenager. zimmerman is free on $150,000 bond. however, he has received more than $200,000 in donations through his website. the wife of john edwards'
