a string of unsolved rapes in hyattsville has people there on high alert tonight and now some are claiming the police have not done a good enough job of getting the word out. ken molestina is live where the sexual assaults have folks very upset. ken. >> reporter: yes, derek, three of the five sexual assaults that are being investigated out here in hyattsville happened here along this trail. police say in all of these cases, the suspects have come behind unsuspecting women. they have used weapons, grabbed them from the back and dragged them inside the woods. >> we're not getting the information. >> reporter: barbara runion is a concerned resident who is up in arms. she claims police and surrounding law enforcement agencies have failed at alerting the public about these sexual assaults. >> they just wanted to sort of sweep this under the rug hoping it would go away. >> reporter: three of the five violent sex assaults happened here. the most recent attack was on april 20th. the police agency who patrols

this area is the maryland national capitol park police and they're disputing the claim that they've dragged their feet in getting the word out. >> as far as it's concerned, we've given information to the television media, the radio media as well as the news print media and it's on people's web pages and so forth. >> reporter: captain stanley johnson says he can't comment on the sexual assault that has taken place near the metro station. those cases and that information, he says, is being handled by hyattsville police. investigators have released these sketches of the suspects. of the three women attacked along the trail, two gave a similar description of their attacker. the third woman described a different man. >> he had maze hazel eyes that make it connected. -- hazel eyes that make it connect the. there is no similarity with the other two. >> reporter: women have been walking alone and have been distracted, usually by ear buds with music. authorities are sending a strong word of caution to women of all

ages not to walk alone especially during dark. meanwhile they're putting pressure on police to walk faster. >> the city government should have gone to the media immediately and put this information out there on television, had a deposit sketch of the rapist months ago and instead they didn't do any of the above. >> reporter: we reached out to hyattsville police chief douglas holland earlier today who told us he was out of town and couldn't talk to us today. whoever the suspects are, they are out there. they are on the loose tonight. and police are asking for your help in trying to solve this case. if you have any information, you're being asked to call authorities. we're live in hyattsville, ken molestina, 9news now. >> thank you, ken. new information tonight on that suspect accused of attacking folks with a hammer in a northwest dc neighborhood. this is the picture of him. michael davis courtesy of the prince of petworth blog. investigators believe davis who is the brother of nfl stars vernon and vontae davis is the one who attacked four people in

a 72-hour period in the petworth neighborhood. police have blanketed that area after the attacker killed a retired nurse from denver and allegedly assaulted two other folks within 26 hours. undercover officers stationed heard a woman cry out in pain. they ran to her and found her on the ground. she had been hit in the head. then they spotted davis. >> the officers made eye kagt with the subject. -- contact with the subject. he began running through the alley and was pursued by officers. >> he found a bag that he had ditched containing a claw hammer they believe he used in the attacks. he was being charged for last night's attack but they believe he was responsible for all four. he's expected to be in court tomorrow. the streets of dr are hopefully -- dc are hopefully to get safer. after a graduation ceremony, new officers will be on the street. it caps off a rigorous 24-week

training course where the officers learned about everything from fire arms to human relations. a local navy veteran and another man are called heroes tonight after a rescue. an elderly man fell off the platform and on to the track just as a train was coming into the station. that's when they sprang into action. they pulled him back up on the platform safely just as the train was barreling in. he tells us he didn't trice before trying to save that man -- twice before trying to save that man. >> it was just an instant. if this guy is not off the tracks, he was going to get hit and possibly killed. so sort of we just did it. there was no thought other than just to get him off the tracks as soon as possible. >> now, he did want us to mention that the other guy who helped out this afternoon deserves half the credit for that heroic rescue. >> when we travel abroad on official trips, we are

representing the people of this country and we should do so by conducting ourselves in an appropriate manner. >> yes, it sounds great. but in light of that expanding scandal, the secret service has decided expectations are just not enough. and now they have imposed new rules to govern the conduct of agents when they are abroad. those rules were established today, and gary nurenberg is here with that. gary. >> well, derek, the elite service has always been perceived and believed itself to be so special that they shouldn't act in ways above approach. a far cry from the incident overseas that have caused agents their jobs and changed the name into a punch line. cnn had investigated the maryland man one of nine agent who has since lost his job.

the agency memoed all employees with new rules governing behavior abroad. you are expected to always conduct yourself in a manner that reflects credit on you, the secret service, the department of homeland security, and most important the united states government and the citizens we serve. it requires ethics training, ban bringing foreigners into rooms and alcohol use. moderate amounts. the new rules specifically ban agents from non-reputable establishments like strip clubs. krio is quoting a government contractor who says he accompanies secret service agents to a strip club to el salvador in advance of a trip there last year. the agents paid strippers to go to their hotel room. >> they approached the military

secret service approached them about getting a special service at the hotel. >> reporter: and the tv station reports us embassy personnel hit that strip club as well. >> we will inquire of our embassy and see what we learn with regard to that. >> reporter: but some agencies haven't pleased congress so far. on wednesday the pentagon reached congress about military personnel involved in that clom columbian raucous. the military says it will do better and will report back next week. the secret service agents traveling abroad will get chaperoned. >> very tough on them. thank you, gary. student loans have turned into another election year battle as it heats up. if lawmakers do not act by july 1st, interest rates will double. earlier today republicans pushed through a bill that will put

money from president obama's bill to pay for the extension. >> it is unconscionable that they are making us choose between education and health care. >> nobody wants to see student loans go up. people want to criticize us because it's an election year. but, my god, do we have to fight about everything. >> senate democrats will bring their version of the bill up in may. that would pay for the rate cut extension with the tax hike on businesses, a proposal they don't like. this weekend was the 20th anniversary of deadly riots in los angeles. thousands went to the streets after -- 55 people were killed in the riots. more than 2,000 were hurt. hilda johnson worked at this grocery store for nearly 30 years and she watched in horror as the original market and much of southern la burned to the ground. >> it was a disaster. it looked like a war zone. it looked like it was -- it was

terrible. it was bad to see everything burning. smoke like for days. >> the riots left a billion dollars in damage. maybe more. and nearly a year later, the four la police officers were tried in federal court and there two were convicted and sentenced to two years in prison for violating rodney king's civil rights. show me the money. that is what they're showing zimmerman who shot trayvon martin. last week he said they would have trouble raising the money so the judge set the bond at 150 grand and later found out he had raised more than $200,000 with his defense with the website that asked for donations. zimmerman's family used some of those donations to help bail him out, and now the prosecutors want the judge to raise zimmerman's bond. the judge says he's thinking about that, but first he wants to know more about the money raised through the website which has since been shut down. a tough week on the witness

stand in the edward's case. the defense today tore into young's credibility. >> reporter: the prosecution star witness anw young endured his last growling day of cross-examination in the federal case against his former boss, john edwards. this is a he said, he said case. the federal election laws haven't been mentioned much. he is accused of misusing campaign contributions to hide an affair. but young acknowledged he was the one that used much of the money to build his own dream home. he told the court he feared he would be shot after a heated conversation with edwards on a desserted road in 2008. young said he wanted edwards to come clean about fathering hunter's baby. >> you thought mr. edwards was going to physically harm you? not mr. edwards personally, young replied. lowell asked young if he threatened to release a sex tape
