>> good evening, everyone. i'm matt jablow in tonight for bruce johnson. we begin with a story you'll see only on 9 news now. a 16-year-old is being called a hero for helping save the life of a neighbor whose house was on fire. our ken molestina was live in forestville. >> reporter: this is a classic case of being at the right place at the right time. this 16-year-old teenager was coming down this street when he noticed street coming from his neighbor's house. he jumped into action, was able to knock on the door and get that couple out of the house before it was too late. >> i thank you so much. >> reporter: hugs of gratitude were plentiful tonight between 16-year-old justin beauman and his 69-year-old neighbor. the teen is credited with saving her and her husband's life. >> he was knocking on the door,

he was pounding on the door. >> i was banging the door. i thought i was banging on it hard, as a matter of fact. then i was like, yeah, there's a fire in the house. they was like, ths ere'a fire? they went upstairs and looked. there was a fire. >> reporter: the fair began on the second floor of this house. segars and her husband were downstairs. >> we didn't even know. >> reporter: she had no clue her home was about to erupt into flames. >> i could tell it was going to be a big fire if i didn't say nothing. >> reporter: prince george's fire crews quickly showed up. more than 30 firefighters worked to put the flames out and keep them from spreading beyond the second floor. she may be displaced tonight but she's thankful her guardian angel came in the form of her teenage neighbor. >> i appreciate that. i love him for it, too. >> reporter: and fire investigators are still trying to figure out what caused this fire. that house is not fit to be in tonight. the segars is having a tough

time figuring out which neighbor to spend the night with, because this neighborhood has poured out in support. everyone is offering her a warm place to stay tonight. now she's got to figure out which neighbor she'll take up on the offer. >> ken, thanks very much. our other top story tonight, a group of armed thugs are on the loose in georgetown after two separate muggings in broad daylight. the first one took place around 1:00 today at the ser ren dip pie ti restaurant -- serendipity restaurant and another at 23rd street. one of the victims told 9 news now he and his coworker were sitting down when a man approached asking for a cigarette. a short time later the two men returned. one of the men pulled a gun and demanded their phones and wallets. the two suspects described as youthful looking black males wearing green or blue t-shirts then ran away.

rodrigo garcia is co-owner of the restaurant. >> it's very hard to believe. it goes to show how aggressive some people have become that they're willing to do it in broad daylight like that. >> police have not yet said if the two armed robberies are related. four people hurt including two medics when a tow truck driver sideswiped an ambulance carrying a patient in clinton, maryland, on the way on the hospital when it was hit. the crash caused the ambulance to hit a car. one person in the car was also hurt. all four of the victims were taken to the hospital where they're being treated for nonlife-threatening injuries. tonight the tow truck driver is facing several traffic citations. a fifth victim in a series of hammer attacks in the petworth community speaks with 9 news now. michael davis the suspect in the case and the younger brother of two nfl players appeared in court. surae chinn talked with victim number five and says he's lucky he wasn't more seriously injured. >> reporter: the man we talked with didn't want to show his

face but remembered distinctly who hit him because they came face-to-face and exchanged pleasantries. >> he walked on my side with a smile and said how are you doing, sir? i said how are you doing? >> he seemed normal? >> normal. he didn't look like a threat at all. >> reporter: the 54-year-old man was walking his dog when someone hit him in the head. >> before i could even turn i was hit with some type of object. he hit me around my ear and also my lip. >> how many times did he hit you? >> just once. >> so you went down? >> down, down completely. >> reporter: he's the fifth person to come forward in a string of hammer attacks last week that left one denver man dead. he says he i.d.'s 19-year-old michael davis in a police lineup. davis, the brother of two nfl star players appeared in court this weekend. the judge ordered him held without bond. the victim delayed reporting the crime until the next day on

friday, when his neighbors told him the alleged attacker was behind bars. he said he didn't know it was related at first and court papers said he was embarrassed. >> you know, they caught this guy. him and his wife came by and the minute he told me that, i called, dialed 911. they got an officer out here to get my statement just to be one of the lucky ones, somebody's watching over me. and kind of like make me want to cry actually, because i say, wow, this could have been more serious. >> he knows his injuries are less severe than the other victims, but because of that, he says, he was able to identify the suspect and bring about that second charge of assault with intent to kill. davis' next hearing is may 11th. i'm surae chinn for 9 news now. tonight, police arrived to find two men and a surt guard suffering from stab wounds. all three were taken to the

university of maryland shock trauma unit in baltimore where they're in stable condition. police haven't talked about a motive for the stabbing. an amtrak train strikes a man in northern virginia before 5:00 this evening at a railroad crossing near feather stone road in woodbridge. the victim was flown to the hospital by immediate did i vac helicopter -- medevac helicopter. in new york city an out of control van plunged off a highway on to the ground of the bronx zoo killing all seven people on board including three children. the van bounced off the median, crossed all southbound lanes, went through the guardrail, sailed more than 50 feet and landed upside down. they crashed on to a part of zoo property that's closed to the public and not near exhibits. >> we came to go to the zoo and came out of the zoo and heard about this accident. crazy. >> the worst possible thing

happened, worst. it's unimaginable. >> the injuries were quite horrific. in 30 years i've seen something like this once or twice. >> obviously the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed. it hit something that caused it to become airborne. >> no word what caused the accident. a similar accident happened last year when an suv flew over the guardrail on the same highway. two people inside the suv were injured, but survived. university maryland basketball player keyshawn howard was arrested early this morning at college park after police responded to a fight at the shanghai cafe. howard was taunting another man and when he wasn't stopped he was arrested for disorderly conduct. coming up tonight, the once little known tries -- children born with a genetic disorder don't live more than a few years. just ahead we'll introduce you

a sailor who pulled two bodies said he found debris smashed into so many pieces it looked like the ship had gone through a blender. eric lamb was working safety patrol when he came across the debris nine hours after the crash happened. three bodies have been found so far. the coast guard suspended its search for a fourth crew member lost at sea. the sailboat apparently collided with a larger ship late friday or early saturday during a race from california to mexico. new york terrorist experts are warning al qaeda's leaders would plan to retaliate for the raid that killed osama bin laden one year ago.

u.s. strikes have all but dismantled the terror network leaving it unable to carry out a september 11th style attack, but say new branches of al qaeda are hitting western targets and u.s. allies overseas. >> he have shown the capability and desire to carry out attack of u.s. persons inside yemen as well as inside the homeland. >> there's no sign of an active plot in the u.s. but in pakistan and elsewhere, u.s. citizens are warned to be vigilant. d.c. police are investigating a murder tonight in northeast washington. police were called to the 600 block of edgewood street around 1:30 this morning where they found 30-year-old joseph suffering from a gunshot wound. police are asking anyone with information about the case to call them. he was dead at the scene. an effort to build new york

city's tallest skyscraper. one world trade will stand 1,776 tall, just a bit taller than the empire state building. it will have an antenna on the roof. it's near the site of the original world trade center towers. prices keep going down at the gas pump. prices fell by a nickel with the average price for a gallon now at $3.82 nationwide. prices ever eight cents lower than a month ago and five cents lower than this time last year when the average price topped out at $3.99 a gallon. crude oil remained relatively stable last week, trading from to $1.05 per barrel. still ahead on 9 news now, it's not too late to catch a glimpse of remarkable paintings. we'll have details. a once little known disorderis getting a lot of attention these days.

this year's national cherry blossom festival, a popular at the national gallery of art has come to a close. hundreds of people stood in line today for a last chance to see an exhibit of paintings which fee features nature inspired scrolls. >> a lot of paintings of nature, birds and trees and flowers and stuff. it's so detailed, tiny little lines and stuff. it was really, really cool. >> i saw something on television showing me about this show, and it was very beautiful. and i wanted to see it in person. >> the national gallery of art stayed open until 8:00 tonight to accommodate people who wanted to see the exhibit before it closed. in tonight's health alert, what was once a little known disorder is now in the spotlight due to recent political events. anita brikman introduces us to a local children born to the

disease whose victims usually don't live past the age of 2. >> reporter: in the midst of the campaign for the republican presidential nomination, a little known medical condition called trisomy 18 came into the national spotlight. rick santorum announced he was dropping out of the race, in part because of a medical crisis involving his child, bella. tonight we meet a local family that has lived with this almost- always fatal condition whose child has beat remarkable odds. his parents say a carefree smile and laughter are his most common expressions. when he plays with his sisters or helps feed the fish. he's 14 years old, one of the longest surviving children with trisome 18. >> i remember early on when the doctors would say you've got an appointment six months from now. i was like, we'll see. it was kind of hard to think six months from now, because we were given such a bleak outlook. >> reporter: in fact, only 10%
