i'm being optimistic. i'll be a glass full type of day. >> that's who you. >> reporter: you can't stop it. you may need a jacket this morning. we have 40s especially north of town. this afternoon some clouds. looks like we'll be in the upper 60s. our day planner for ow this monday morning -- for you on this monday morning, not friday morning, 50 degrees, partly cloudy. we'll be 60 at noon with mostly cloudy skies. a lot of these will be the high thin clouds. by 5:00 67. that will be close to the high for the day. you can see the high clouds coming in. these guys, 20,000, 30,000 feet are coming in. in pittsburgh a couple of sprinkles there. looks like any showers will stay well north of us. 99.5% of the showers will stay well north of us. a slight chance we'll see one or two. it's actually down to freezing in york. dry air. 39 in frederick. it's 52 in fredricksburg. on the bay it's 53 and even 46 in easton. we're going into the 60s to

maybe near 70 in a couple spots this afternoon. monika, take it away. overall the major thoroughfares are great. for monday morning you'll just see that early morning volume forming. on the northbound side of i-95 we're fine but you want to watch out for that police activity we've been telling but here in lorton. northbound on route 123 near palmer drive. so be aware of that. across the occoquan river on 95 things are fine, lorton, newington to springfield. we'll take a live look outside where there are no problems as you can see. again just the volume early monday morning. it already looks like this in the main and hov lanes heading for 395. back over to the map and this time all the way up 270 coming in from frederick. no problems on i-70 and 270. a live look on the beltway north of town here at georgia avenue traffic is moving well. in my next report another look at area roads at 5:09. >> thank you very much, monika. d.c. police are investigating several armed robberies in northwest washington. >> the first one was yesterday afternoon. the latest happened just a

little over two hours ago. 9news now reporter delia goncalves joins us live with the latest. i guess one of these started with some cigarettes i guess, delia. >> reporter: absolutely. the first said they wanted some cigarettes. then pulled out a gun. so pretty scary for the folks who were involved, the victims i should say involved. we just got word i should tell you, mike, that police made three arrests in connection to a robbery on 9th and u just a short time ago. we're told they're in the very beginning stages of this investigation. police are looking into the possibility that these could all be linked. we're talking about possibly three robberies in the past 24 hours or so let's talk about the first robbery that happened here in georgetown right outside of the serendipity three restaurant 1:00 sunday afternoon. anyone who's been in georgetown around that time knows that is a busy, busy time especially on m street. the employees tell 9news now that he and a co-worker were

having a cigarette break in a nearby alley in the 3100 block of m street when that robbery happened. the victims gave police the same description as a robbery that occurred just one hour later in the 1900 block of 23rd street. three black men wearing blue or green t-shirts first asking for a cigarette. then pulling a gun on the victims. demanding wallets and cell phones. >> it's very bold but then again people aren't expecting this so they walk in places where they might not walk at midnight. >> it just goes to show how aggressive some people have become. they're willing to do it in the broad daylight like that. >> i should emphasize these three suspects all described as young men in fact. we'll have more from that restaurant owner and how his employees are doing coming up at 5:30. mike, andrea, back to you. >> delia, thank you. anne arundel county police are looking for suspects who stabbed three people at an elks

lodge. it happened on solomon's island road in annapolis. two male guests and a security guard were suffering from stab wounds. all three were taken to the university of maryland shock trauma unit in baltimore where we're told they're in stable condition. four people are hurt, including two medics when a tow truck driver sideswipes an ambulance in clinton, maryland. the ambulance was carrying a patient to the hospital sunday afternoon when it was hit. the impact pushed the ambulance into a car. one person in that car was also hurt. all four of the victims were taken to the hospital where they're being treated for nonlife threatening injuries. that tow truck driver is facing several traffic citations. the sole survivor of a fiery crash in chevy chase is suing montgomery county police for more than $10 million. the lawsuit contends a patrol car caused the march 23 crash by ramming into a toyota echo that 18-year-old rico richardson was riding in at the time. richardson was in the front

passenger seat. the officer pulled him and the driver out of burning car. the driver died a few days later. two teenagers in the back seat died at the scene. richardson said he suffered fractured ribs and emotional damage. they say no police cruiser came into contact with the stolen toyota echo. this morning an elderly couple in forestville, maryland has a new hero, their teenage maker. 16-year-old justin bowman was given a huge hug of thanks. he was walking down pumpphrey street yesterday when he saw smoke coming from the home. the couple had no idea their home was on fire. >> he ran up to the house. he's knocking on the door. oh, he was pounding on the door. >> i was banging on the door. i was like you have a fire in the house. >> there's a fire? they went upstairs and looked. there was a fire.

>> great work, my friend. prince george's county firefighters kept the flames from spreading beyond the second floor where it started although there is enough damage that the see goodes ge -- that the seegera need to stay elsewhere. headline time. >> good morning to both of you. looking to see if maybe we can do a repeat. that would be really nice. wall street had a really good week, another winning week last week. stocks rallied on the back of better than expected profits. this week investors are focusing on the health of the economy. checking the numbers now, the dow stands at 13,22328, added 23 point -- 13,228, added 23 points on friday. nasdaq had its best week since february led by strong earnings from apple, amazon and expedia. s&p 500 was up by 3 points. coming into the first quarter reporting period, expectations

were pretty darn low. companies were expected to deliver essentially zero profit growth but wall street has been happily surprised so far. our partners the a "u.s.a. today" report more than half the companies in the s&p 500 have reported results and delivered about 7% profit growth. it is the tenth quarter in a row of profit increases. meantime ford has unveiled its redesigned escape, crossover compact in san francisco. reviewers are saying it's looking more like a car nowadays. it comes with improved fuel efficiency and the price $200 less than the basic sticker on the previous model. these are going to start showing up in dealerships this spring. what's really interesting -- the thing about the fuel economy that i find fascinating, they got rid of the hybrid in this line because this one, the regular old ford escape that they just improved gets better gas mileage on the highway than the hybrid version. >> no kidding. >> so that will save you a lot of money right there. >> that's the new think, short and chunky and off the ground a

just about 10 after 5:00 on this monday morning. it's cool out there. you're probably going to need a jacket as we have lots of areas in the 40s. a couple of spots in the low 50s. today we'll have clouds and some sunshine but probably more clouds than sun. we'll call it partly to mostly cloudy. seasonably cool. 60 degrees by noon with highs in the upper 60s to around 70. i'm talking about a big warm-up for the week when i see you in a few minutes. right now monika is talking traffic. >> i'm going to take a look at southern maryland. first of all on the beltway at route 4 pennsylvania avenue, traffic is moving well past andrews air force base. no problems to report on route 5, route 4 or 301 to the beltway. coming up in my next report, another look at maryland roads at 5:17. making news now at 5:10 this morning, police are trying to figure out how a van driver

lost control on the highway near the bronx zoo. the van flew over the guardrail and then plummeted more than 50 feet into a wooded part of the zoo property. all seven people, including three little girls under the age of 10 were all killed. no one on the ground was hurt. in southern virginia, the henry county sheriff's office is investigating a shooting and crash that took the lives of four people, including a 6- month-old. local media reports family members were rushing an 18-year- old shooting victim to the hospital when the car slammed into a home. greece has an illegal immigration controversy. government forces have started transporting illegal immigrants to holding centers ahead of national elections. the government plans to put 1,000 illegal immigrants in these centers. then deport those who do not qualify for asylum. fired up redskins fans are already predicting super bowl. coming up at 5:57, you have to

coming up, what will the week look like? here's howard. >> it will feel more like april today. as we get through the week, it will feel like late may or june. much warmer temperatures moving. in some happy campers off to my right. this morning it's definitely chilly out there. some rain, a little bit in the forecast later on tonight and tomorrow and we need it. here's a look at some of the rain numbers for the year. just want to keep you updated on this. we're still running a deficit we. had rain last week. look at the numbers, almost seven and a half inches for the year. but that's almost four and a half inches below normal. up in dulles, we have four and three quarter inches below average with over eight inches at martinsburg. that's a little more than three inches. minus three inches there from normal. we certainly still need some rain. we have a couple of chances here. today not one of them. your bus stop forecast, it's partly cloudy and school, 40s and 50s. sunrise 11 after 6:00. less than an hour from now. our day planner partly to

mostly cloudy at times. lots of high clouds today. 60 by noon. southeast winds at 10. highs in the upper 60s, maybe 70 degrees. 5:00 temperature 67 with that southeast wind between 10 and 15. you're looking at the clouds this morning. these thin ones coming across virginia trying to get into maryland but we have more clear skies and fairly dry air. that's cooled off quite a bit to the north and east especially in pennsylvania where, yes, 32 york. they've got a freeze this morning there. hagerstown is in the 40s along with gaithersburg mid-40s. off to the south we have low 50s fredricksburg over to the pax river naval air station. locally we're looking at readings which are in the 40s north. great falls by the way one of our cool spots down to 43 degrees. reston 42. 49 in springfield and 49 also in college park. we had a great day saturday at the maryland day. if you haven't been there, next year put it on your calendar and you can also come over and play on our green screen with us. looking outside we have 50 degrees under our michael & son

weather camera, partly cloudy skies. there is a bit after chill out there. i certainly think you'll need some sort of jacket. the middle of the country looking at showers and storms. this stuff is spread out from the texas panhandle, northern oklahoma all the way back. it goes into michigan here where it breaks up a little bit. the steadier line in illinois. that's moving to the east and northeast. we'll see some of that as we get into late tonight and tomorrow. what we're seeing in the short term, a lot of the high clouds blowing toward us. then we'll see those showers really start to move in. a couple overnight tonight and during the day on tuesday. so the forecast here, we've got partly to mostly cloudy, upper 60s today. not nearly as cold tonight. we'll be in the 50s to near 60. 80-ish on wednesday with showers and storms, especially in the early to mid afternoon the way it's looking. wednesday maybe a stray storm, 81. then here's the heat thursday and friday, mid- to upper 80s. chance of afternoon storms this weekend. it is 5:17. monika santami is in time saver

traffic updating us on some incidents in northern virginia. >> that's right. there was high speed police chase overnight that ended in lorton and there's been an investigation going on on the northbound side of route 123. just near palmer road. so it's just west of i-95 here on ox road northbound side. so be aware of that. you may still have to follow police direction. i think they're kind of ending their investigation at this point. northbound on 95 you just got a bit of volume forming across the occoquan river and then again here in springfield. we'll go live inside the beltway near edsall road. you can see 395 is running fine between the beltway and 14th street bridge. we'll go back over to the maps and go into the downtown area. once you cross the 14th street bridge, you're okay on all the major thoroughfares in northwest, northeast. we'll take a live look in northeast new york avenue at bladensburg road. no problems as cow in this corridor. coming -- you come in this corridor. coming up, we'll go into maryland. back to you. >> thanks a lot, monika. tonight the capitals will try to win one on the rangers

harper to make his debut on the road. >> good morning, everybody. it happened a lot sooner than many expected. even nationals general manager mike rizzo said they had to throw their original plan out the window. bryce harper made his debut this weekend against los angeles. he was impressive in day one and impressive in day two, yesterday. series finale against los angeles. in the bottom of the 4th, stellar defense. big catch by the young guy but gee crow gonzalez on -- gio gonzalez gets in trouble on the mound. the dodgers blank the nats 2-0 handing them their first series sweep of the season. the orioles hosting oakland. fans had to wait a while but it was worth it. keeping it scoreless till the 9th inning with this three-run walk off homer. orioles win 5-2. the capitals drop game one

happy monday. mike hydeck here. here's monika santami. >> hello, everybody. >> howard bernstein is over there. he has the weather. good morning. jacket weather. probably going to be -- on a one to ten, probably about a six today. weather wise it is cool this morning. temps in the 40s out there. this afternoon, though, some clouds, sunshine. we'll struggle to get into the upper 60s, maybe 70 south of washington. looking at the day planner, you can see what i'm talking about with 9:00 temperatures still in the mid-50s. by noon about 60. one person may see a stray shower today. there will be a better chance we'll see the showers tonight

after midnight and some scattered around on tuesday as warmer air heads our way. the high clouds are streaming down across western maryland and virginia this morning. a couple of sprinkles up toward pittsburgh, but the real showers, they're up in michigan andeanian and northwest -- and indiana and northwest ohio. there's really nothing near us today. temperatures have dipped into the upper 30s in frederick. most of southern pennsylvania under frost advisories this morning. you see york down to 32 while baltimore is 48. it's 53 in fredricksburg. much milder off to the south. 40s across much of southern maryland. looking at highs today perhaps holding in the mid-60s along the bay with the on shore flow. upper 60s here in d.c. maybe 72 in culpeper. let's go to monika santami with time saver traffic. >> good morning. things are looking great outside actually for a monday morning. i don't have any really major problems to tell you about. i really hope it stays that way. if you're planning to head in from college park on the outer loop, no problems heading west

a pleasant conversation before suddenly striking him. the defense may rest later today in the child molestation trial of a falls church businessman. michael gardner is accused of molesting three girls who came to his daughter's sleepovers last june. gardner's wife robin a city council woman and former mayor, testified in her husband's defense friday. defense attorneys also questioned the police work in the case. we're awaiting word from d.c. police whether three men arrested early this morning are the suspects from a couple of armed robberies yesterday near georgetown. at least two attacks took place in the middle of the afternoon. 9news now reporter delia goncalves joins us live with the story. good morning, delia. >> reporter: good morning, andrea. you know well that here georgetown, especially on m street on a sunday afternoon completely packed full of people everywhere. so folks are really surprised by the brazenness of these robbers to actually attack in

the middle of the afternoon with everyone around. we can tell you that first robbery happened to employees outside of serendipity three restaurant on the corner of m and wisconsin. we're told the two employees were out in the alley on a cigarette break when they were prepared by three young black men wearing green or blue t- shirts they told police. it was 1:00 in the afternoon. the men first asked for a cigarette. then returned just seconds later, pulled a gun and robbed the victim. >> i'm very concerned for them because they're young guys. they come in early. they're shooken up. anybody who get as gun pointed at you i think is going to be afraid. i'm just surprised it would happen so late in the afternoon. i mean, i'm just surprised it happened in georgetown, period. i know it does but it's a big concern not only for me but for all business owners in the area. >> reporter: get this. just an hour later, another victim was robbed at gunpoint on embassy row.

the suspect's description in that case the same as here in georgetown. coming up at 6:00, what residents and business owners have to say about police presence in this area. andrea, back to you. >> delia goncalves reporting live from georgetown. if federal proctors get their way, former d.c. councilman harry thomas, jr. is looking at some pretty serious jail time. both prosecutors and defense attorneys have now filed their sentence recommendations for thomas. prosecutors are asking for 46 monthses behind bars. d.c. defense attorneys, rather, say 18 months is more appropriate. in january thomas pleaded guilty to embezzling more than $350,000 from city money earmarked for youth sports programs. he's scheduled to be sentenced later this week. some former virginia first ladies will be rallying support for president obama this evening in falls church. they'll be announcing the co- chairs of the women for obama organization in the commonwealth. >> i do not want to turn the keys over to the other guys

because they will drive this country in the wrong direction. >> that was virginia senator mark warner. he led the cheering section saturday in arlington at a kickoff for the obama campaign office there. in 2008 virginia elected a democratic president for the first time in 44 years. >> virginia has suspended funding to alexandria public schools' adult education program, that according to this morning's washington examiner. the state is investigating possible cheating by school fishes on exams design -- officials on exams dispiened to prepare student -- designed to prepare students for their ged tests. the adult education program will continued as scheduled for the rest of the year and school administrators believe the state will eventually reimburse them. it's 5:34. time for another your money report now. >> jessica doyle is back with a battle over the cost of student loans. we've been hearing about this all week. >> nearly everybody agrees that's the thing that's so crazy about this situation. they don't want college to get even harder to come by in america. they want kids to continue for

that dream. but lawmakers on capitol hill of course are fighting on how to pay for the help for students. millions of students could graduate more in debt if congress allows the interest rate on federal student loans to double. that happens july 1 unless something is done. republicans have passed a bill that eliminates a preventive care fund in the health care law to pay to keep these student loan rates low. senate democrats will bring their version of the bill up for debate in may. it will pay for the rate cut extension with a tax hike on businesses and of course that's an approach republicans oppose. gas prices continue to drop. aaa says prices fell by a nickel this week, thank you very much. the average price for a gallon of regular is now costing $3.82 a gallon nationwide. around the country prices are 8 cents lower than a month ago and 5 cents lower than it time last year n. our area prices are down 7 cents in the last week and 10 cents in the last month but we're still paying a little bit more than the

the way up toward indiana, michigan, illinois. this marches toward the east. looks like most of this will stay northwest of us today. today won't abproblem. as we get into tomorrow, actually tonight even will be a few clouds around and showers here and there. here we are at 2:15. i want to show you these line of showers which tomorrow morning could be toward hagerstown. look at the line of showers and storms by around lunch time into the middle of the afternoon. north and west drier. by evening the storms head towards southern virginia. around here today it will be partly to mostly cloudy. 80-ish tomorrow with a scattering of showers and storms at times. wednesday 81. stray storm possible west of town especially. by thursday and friday, more like june or july. mid- to upper 80s. even low 80s this weekend with the isolated afternoon storm possible. it is 5:48. we turn it over to monika. she's got time saver traffic.

just a couple of things are popping up now. that's right. just a couple of things. they're mainly in virginia. good morning, everybody. the beltway is great. all your major thoroughfares are fine. we start off with a look at route 50. no problems to report as you come in from annapolis all the way inside the beltway through cheverly. both the bw parkway and route 50 are fine into northeast. the west side of town, there's an accident. this is new on route 234 right near the manassas mall. so you want to be aware of that. just south of i-66. 66 is fine as cow in from manassas -- as you come in from manassas. in lorton an overnight accident investigation continues on ox road. that is going to be right near furnace road in lorton. you want to follow police direction to get around that let's take a live look outside. here's what it looks like at the american legion bridge on the west side of town. no problems to report between 270 and bethesda and all the way into tysons corner. if you're planning to use the marc brunswick line and penn
