southern pennsylvania. frederick is 36. gaithersburg, martin burrs, hagerstown 43. heard from shirley out in oldtown, maryland. she's down to 35 this morning. we've got 53 down in reedville and 49 in la plata. looking at our highs today with that mix of clouds and sunshine, mid-60s on the bay in annapolis. we'll be in the mid- to upper 60s in the metro with 71 possibly in ma man sas. -- manassas. monika santami, looking good for drivers in most areas. >> it is, howard. thank you for being so opt hiss mystic, too. owe on optimistic, too. if you're planning to head around town, things aren't looking too bad but a couple of accidents have popped up in virginia. if you're planning to head over to the west side of town, a couple of things i want to tell you about. route 234 near manassas mall, there's an accident. police are on the scene. that's south of i-66 inbound on i-66 you have the slow traffic in manassas. between route 50 and 123, an accident here on the shoulder. in fact, i'll show it to you live on our traffic land

camera. it's on the shoulder right here but it's causing a bit after backup leaving route 50 past the accident scene. back over to the map and this time we'll head over to the north side of town. no problems to report leaving college park on the outer loop into bethesda. we'll take a live look at the american legion bridge west side of town. traffic moving well across the potomac river. one more thing if you're planning to use marc trains. your penn line 403 and brunswick 870 are both running 15 to 20 minutes late this morning. an update on virginia roads at 6:12. back to you. >> thanks, monika. at the top of the hour, let's get a check on some of the stories happening today. secretary of state hillary clinton leaves tonight for a trip to asia. her first stop is the biggest one. it's a trip to china. treasury secretary timothy geithner is going as well. after china secretary clinton will go to india and bangladesh. do not be surprised to see some small airplanes over the nation's capital. nor rad will conduct some test flights over the next two weeks over the potomac river and near

quantico. some as low as 500 feet. most of the flights will take place between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. prince george's county police are getting some exercise while getting to know the residents of languageley park. -- langeley park. officers will be out for a morning job at 7:30. they'll start at the regency furniture parking lot on new hampshire avenue. the program is called "running the beat" and it will eventually be done in five other neighborhoods. also today, d.c. police are investigating several robberies. they all happened in the course after few hours on sunday. >> the big question, are these robberies linked. delia goncalves is live in georgetown with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, andrea. we've just learned police have arrested three people in connection with a robbery that happened just a few hours ago this morning on 9th and u. even though the investigation is in its very early stages, they do tell us they are looking into the possibility that that case could be linked to a robbery of two employees of serendipity three restaurant here on m and

wisconsin in georgetown. it was 1:00 in the afternoon sunday. the two workers say they were on a cigarette break in an alley in the 3100 block of m street when three young black men wearing green or blue t- shirts they tell police asked them for cigarettes. then immediately they pulled a gun on them. it is the same suspect description a victim after second robbery gave police. that one happened an hour later in the 1900 block of 23rd street. >> there are a lot of police around here, too. that's unusual i think for it to happen in this neighborhood because there are police practically at every corner. >> they're all very good guys. they all come through all the time. they just can't be everywhere all the time. should they possibly check more so in these alleys? probably. we've had more and more -- i see people on the street that are constantly asking for money. >> reporter: as that owner said, police presence heavy in

this area as well as foot traffic, especially on a sunday. but police, they say, simply can't be everywhere at all times. coming up at 6:30, we'll have more from that restaurant owner and what he says about his employees and how they're doing. andrea, back to you. >> delia goncalves reporting live from georgetown. the man accused in the series of hammer attacks on people in northwest is in jail being held without bond. one of his alleged victims told us he didn't think anything was wrong till he was hit with a hammer. >> he walked to my side with a smile and said how you doing, sir. i said how you doing? >> reporter: he seemed normal? >> normal. he didn't look like a threat at all. >> the victim asked us not to show his face. he was hit in the head thursday afternoon. he didn't call police until after he learned of the arrest of michael davis and he picked davis out of a lineup. police say davis used a hammer to attack five people killing one of them. davis will be back in court

next month. the man accused of killing a pregnant woman has a history of violence. 22-year-old nathan rogers was arrested friday. he was already on home detention for an assault conviction. police say he killed 23-year- old jazz minute moss and they say he -- jasmine moss and they say he was the father of her unborn baby. she was three months pregnant when she was killed. her body was found in a car in district heights. parents tell us they don't like the portable classrooms for their children but montgomery county sure does. the county schools will be using at least 50 more of them next year which is on top of the 500 that's already being used as classrooms in other work space areas. the county calls them a necessary evil to deal with overcrowded sools. more -- schools. more than half of the county's schools are overcapacity. 6:06. jessica doyle is watching the skies and your money. >> fewer companies apparently want to get into the space business now. >> nation really has been focused in on the future of the space business this month.

of course we had that spectacular flyover of the space shuttle discovery. it's been less than a year after nasa ended its shuttle program and players in the space business are casting around for new direction. united technologies is the most recent company to announce it will scale back its role in space exploration. the company's chief financial officer says without a national space policy in place, growth will be limited for its space unit so it's selling it. other companies have shifted from space exploration at the same time high profile space travel is becoming a commercial venture, including plans by space exploration technology. they want to launch a capsule at the space station. there's also a group of wealthy backers hoping to mine as troids. >> federal regulators closed bank of eastern color in cambridge, maryland as well as harvest bank of maryland in gaits areburg. so far this year 22 banks have failed. and it's getting hardtory hide money from your spouse --

harder to hide money from your spouse. a sad but true fact of marriage, troubled couples often try to stash some cash. the typical places are your safe deposit box, maybe a secret online brokerage account but thanks to the internet, it is harder to hide. the law is pretty gray on some of this stuff but suspicious spouses are digging around in their partner's web surfing history, soabl networks. they're -- social networks. they're installing tracking software. lawyers have their own set of tools. 66% of divorce lawyers are citing facebook as the top source for compromised information online. so when they're hunting around, this is somewhat less that fair just. 48% of young professional couples say they hide purchase franchise their spouse. that's not so great either. >> no. i'm willing to bet that number is even higher.

conditions at 6:18. our time is 6:12. we now know three children were among seven people killed in an suv crash sunday. >> it went off a highway ramp in new york city crashing near the bronx zoo. we take you to the scene. >> reporter: a mangled suv landed upside down in a ravine some 100 feet beneath the bronx river parkway. the wooded area is part of the bronx zoo, a popular tourist attraction in new york city. >> we came to go to the zoo and came out of the zoo and heard about this accident. crazy. >> reporter: the honda pilot was headed south on the parkway sunday afternoon. police say it bounced off the median, crossed all southbound lanes and vaulted over the guardrail. everyone on board was killed including three children ages 10, 5 and 3. >> the worst possible thing happened, the worst. it's unimaginable. >> the injuries were quite horrific. i've seen this once or twice. >> reporter: investigators aren't sure what caused the

driver to lose control. >> obviously the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed. it hit something that caused it to become airborne. >> reporter: it's not yet known if the passengers were wearing seat belts. the brush where it landed is a nonpublic area of the bronx zoo. no visitors, exhibits or animals were affected. the wreckage was loaded on to a flat bed and carted out of the sue. the medical examiner plans to release the cause of death monday. city agencies will be asked to look at safety issues on the parkway, including the height of the guardrail. cbs news, the bronx. >> this is not the first time there's been a crash like this in the same spot. last year an suv went over the guardrail on the same highway. two people were hurt but they did survive. it is 6:14 on this monday morning. here's a check on some of the stories making news. the man accused in the deadly shooting spree at an oakland, california college goes back to court. police say he killed seven

people on april 2. he lived in spring field, virginia several years ago. sources close to newt gingrich say the g.o.p. presidential candidate will announce he is ending his campaign on wednesday. that will leave only mitt romney and texas congressman ron paul in the race. bruce springsteen closed out this year's first weekend of the new orleans jazz festival. it was a two and a half hour show. this was the boss' first appearance at the festival since 2006 but it does continue this coming weekend. >> hop on a plane and go. >> i'd like to. >> that would be fun. >> but we're here and you don't have such bad news for us. >> no. we had a great day yesterday. today we have a few more clouds. we'll get some much needed showers tonight and tomorrow. then we're going to turn things up a little bit heat wise as we get in toward the second half of the weekend. this weekend is going to still be in the low 80s. it will feel new orleans a little bit.

a little bit of humidity. but not like being on the gulf coast. nothing like that. bus stop forecast this morning, partly cloudy, cool. 40s and 50s. even some upper 30s at this hour well north of us. sunrise occurred a few minutes ago at 6:11. we are looking at a cloudy to partly cloudy day today. low 50s here. notice how the clouds really thicken up midday. by the afternoon we're going to stay mostly cloudy. upper 60s to maybe 70 in the warm spots with southeast winds 10 to 15 miles an hour. some early sunshine and with the clear skies, light wind, the drier air, there's 32 in new york. it's 54 at the pacs naval air -- pacs naval -- pax naval air station. we have 30s also in western maryland. you can see some of those clouds here off to our south and east. we're looking at the capitol. the temperature this morning 50 degrees. you're looking at our michael & son weather camera.

northeast wind at 9. our dew point at 35. so the air is dry. that's one reason why it got so chilly. the air is not dry in the middle of the country. the storms lining up oklahoma, missouri, heading up toward even michigan into ohio. this will be moving off toward the east. not really expecting much more than a very isolated shower today. i think 99% of us stay dry with partly to mostly cloudy conditions. the sunshine this morning giving way to more clouds this afternoon. tonight after mid night, here i stop the clock at 2:15, some sprinkles here and there. you notice some showers tomorrow morning, especially if you headed up toward pennsylvania, new york early. this is 6:00 a.m. we've got some showers out to our west. they'll be with us especially in the afternoon south and east by 2:00. they start to pull away a little bit. by evening they're down toward the norfolk area. so we will see some much needed showers and storms tomorrow. i don't think it's going to be a great deal of rain but we'll take it. 68 today, not nearly as chilly tonight. we're dipping into the 50s to

around 60. 80-ish tomorrow with showers and storms. wednesday still warm, 81 with an isolated storm. even warmer thursday and friday. mid-80s thursday. upper 80s friday. by saturday and sunday, we'll cool to the low 80s with a threat for the afternoon thunderstorm. it is 6:17. monika santami, we've been doing pretty decently this monday morning, haven't we? >> we really have. it hasn't been too terrible although we have a couple of long-standing situations. one is in lorton on the northbound side of 123 ox road at palmer drive where there is an accident investigation going on since overnight. if you're planning to head in lorton, you want to watch out for that otherwise here we go on the west side of town. first of all there's an accident in manassas at route 234 near manassas mall. on the inbound side of 66 the normal slow stuff on monday morning manassas into centreville and past route 50, an accident. it's sitting on the left shoulder. you can see the tow trucks have arrived on the scene but because it's attracting so much

attention, you want to watch out for the slow traffic coming in from route 50 past the accident toward route 123. let's go back over to our maps and this time to maryland. no problems to report on 270. it's just the slow traffic. about 29 miles an hour as you head past route 80 toward clarksburg. then it's still okay down into rockville and the point where the lanes divide. here's what it looks like on the outer loop at georgia avenue running smoothly on the north side of town. coming up in my next report, i'll update you on the situation in virginia at 6:25. back to you. animals of all kinds got a little help from a group of dog lovers this weekend. >> the weather was great for yesterday's 14th annual paws in the park dog walk and festival in gaithersburg, maryland. the funds raised from the festival benefit animals cared for by the montgomery county humane society. it is 6:19. next in sports, the capitals get ready for game two with the rangers and wait until you see an amazing play by bryce harper. >> he's fantastic.

6:23. your weather first. it's jacket worthy coolness. some low 40s in spots and even 39 or so in frederick this morning. we will have some sunshine early but overall i think we'll be mostly cloudy and seasonably cool. we'll be in the low 60s for lunch time. highs in the upper 60s, maybe 70 degrees. in sports the capitals will try to even their playoff series with the rangers tonight. it's game two in new york. >> the caps fell in game one on saturday by a score of 3-1. puck drops tonight at 7:30. >> the series between the

devils and flyers got under way yesterday in philadelphia. in overtime the phillys danny brier slapped one in from far away. philadelphia wins game one 4-3. out west last night, the coyotes beat the predators. the nationals run alone at the top of the nle is over. they fell in a tie with the braves. both teams with the 14-8 record. not an incredible weekend for the nats even though bryce harper made his major league debut. this is day two for him. harper maybes the catch and crashes into the wall. he's okay. in the 6th, gio gonzalez walked the bases loaded unfortunately. then james loney knocked in two for the dodgers. nats get shut out 2-0,they're home tomorrow against the diamondbacks. here's a way to spend a

morning. we'll see some early sunshine followed by partly to mostly cloudy skies for the day. we have a nice warm-up coming. this morning you definitely need a jacket as we're down to 50 at the airport. but many areas are down in the 40s, even some 30s. 60 at noon under partly to mostly cloudy skies. we'll get into the upper 60s. south and southwest of town you may get to 70, 71. you can see some of the clouds that have been streaming in from the northwest this morning. isolated sprinkles in the charlottesville area but around here we're staying dry. fred rig down to -- frederick down to 36. frost advisories in southern pennsylvania. we're in the 40s in winchester. manassas 50. even andrews and easton have cooled to 45 this morning. we're looking at a decent afternoon in spite of the partly to mostly cloudy conditions with a high around 68. 6:30. monika santami is tracking our commute this morning. pretty decent for a monday. >> it's pretty decent except for one hot spot. that's on the inbound side of i-

66. i wish i could say the reason for this delay is a big one but it's really not. it's a minor accident sitting on the shoulder on the inbound side of i-66 right here after route 50 but the delay begins all the way back in centreville. we'll take a live look on the inbound side of i-66. it's the accident that's causing that delay. plus sunshine in your eyes which is not a bad thing except when it causes a delay on the inbound side of i-66. the lanes are open but very heavy this morning. let's take a look back at the maps on the northbound side of i-95. normal slow stuff as you leave dale city. as you can see up toward woodbridge and the occoquan river. in springfield we'll take a live look there. just the volume this morning. no big deals to report on the northbound side of i-95. we'll take a last live look at 395 as well northbound and it's just that volume heading north from duke street to seminary road where the pace improves up to the 14th street bridge. coming up in my next report, we'll go into maryland at 6:45. this week marks one year the anniversary when navy seals

>> good seeing you. we'll be watching this morning starting at 7:00 a.m. >> thank you, charlie. new this morning on channel 9, allegations of cheating against a blue ribbon school in our region. that school is in montgomery county. highland elementary in silver spring went from almost being taken over by the state to being hailed for its high reading scores in just four years. the atlantic constitution journal questions, quote, extreme score gains and says the school may have cheated to raise its scores. county superintendent joshua star offered his comments. he said let me be clear. the turn around was a result of having a great school leader and motivated staff. he calls the report questionable journalism. d.c. police are investigating a series of robberies from the last 24 hours. the big question is are they connected. >> delia goncalves live in georgetown. what do we know so far, delia? >> reporter: we know just a few hours ago in the early hours of this morning, police arrested

three people in connection with a robbery that happened over on 9th and u. even though the investigation is in its early stages, investigators do tell us they are looking into the possibility that all three robberies could be linked. the first happened outside serendipity three restaurant on m and wisconsin in georgetown. it happened 1:00 p.m. sunday. two employees say they were on a smoke break in the alley. they tell police that three young black men wearing green or blue t-shirts approached them, asked them for a cigarette and then quickly returned pulling a gun on the victim. >> i'm very concerned for them. they're young guys. they come in early. so they're shooken up. anybody that get as gun pointed at you i think is going to be afraid. i'm just surprised that it would happen so late in the afternoon. i mean, i'm just surprised it happened in georgetown, period. i know it does but it's a big

concern not only for me but for all business owners in the area. >> reporter: get this. just one hour after this crime happened outside of serendipity three restaurant, another victim was robbed on embassy row. that occurred just one hour later as i mentioned. the suspect's description the same as in this georgetown case. we'll have much more on this story as it develops a little later today. back to you, mike. >> delia goncalves reporting live from northwest washington this morning. thank you, delia. women who use the northwest branch trail for a morning run are being told to stay alert. there have been five attacks there along the trail since january. the most recent incident was april 20. many of the attacks have been in the west hyattsville and chillum neighborhoods and police say the attacker had a gun in his last hit. now for a story will you see only right here on channel 9. quick thinking and decisive action of a teenager probably saved the lives of his elderly

neighbors whose house was on fire. >> he ran up to the house, knocking on the door. he was pounding on the door. >> luis seegars gave 16-year- old just din bowman a big -- justin bowman a big hug of thanks. she and her husband were in their home yesterday totally unaware of a fire burning upstairs. that is until bowman saw the flames and smoke and alerted the couple and both got out of the house without an injury. 6:36. jessica doyle is watching your money. >> there is a big influx of women headed to the boardroom these days. >> that's right. the number of female c.e.o.s in america is still woefully low, yeah, but that could be about to change. "the wall street journal" reports the companies are grooming more women for the corner office. as it stands right now, women hold the top spot at just 35 fortune 1000 companies but investors are putting more pressure on companies to

diversify. nearly 73% of fortune 500 companies now have at least one female executive officer. >> a new report says apple is using subsidiaries in ireland, netherlands and other nations as part of a strategy to cut its global tax bill by billions of dollars every year. "the new york times" outlines the illegal method. it cites a study by a former treasury economiest that estimates apple's federal tax bill would have been $2.4 billion higher last year without using such tactics. its tax rate as a result of all of this has been lowered to 9.8% 9.8%. wish we could all do that kind of tax rate. it's not often we talk about the plague outside the history class. back in the 14th century it killed off anywhere from 30% to 60% of europe's total population. now plague infects up to 2,000 humans a year. doctors have a new drug to treat those who get sick. u.s. regulators have approved the use of a powerful johnson & johnson antibiotic to treat

welcome back. things are looking a tiny bit better on 66 i'm happy to say. no issues to report on the beltway all around town. we've been fine there. on the inbound side of i-66, that earlier accident after route 50 was cleared up and delays are beginning to ease just a bit on the inbound side of i-66, although i would say the damage is done coming out

eating, doing it the right way. our registered dietician is going to help us to not ruin our workout. you do a vigorous workout at the gym, doing weights and different kind of cross training. what's the best advice? >> immediately after weight training and that can include cross fit, pilates, anything working the muscle, you have to have protein. a blend of protein,is preferential. it prolongs the period of muscle building after exercise and increases recovery compared to whey alone. >> you can do a couple of different things in smaller amounts. this is in addition to or prior to your normal meal also of the day because it's replenishing after the workout. >> it's that period of time, within a half-hour of working out. >> you're saying these items here are for what reason? is this an everyday kind of thing? >> that's if you train every day or train more than twice a day, more than once a day. it's important to get the
