one year after osama bin laden was killed by u.s. special forces the issue has become a campaign issue. president obama says the anniversary should be a time of reflection. it's a move that's drawing criticism from mitt romney. meanwhile soon to be declassified documents are revealing new information about al qaeda and its leader. tara mergener has more now from washington. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning to you, michelle. a task force is going through the documents which will be avaltable later this week. this is a continuing war over bin laden's death. the u.s. government says osama bin laden's death was a crippling blow to al qaeda that is still being held today. >> they're struggling to attract recruits. al qaeda is losing badly. >> reporter: on the evening of may 1st, the navy s.e.a.l.s

launched a. they stuffed the bagful of documents and videos. it provided insight into bin laden's operations. he was particularly worried about drone strikes. >> in documents we seized he confessed to december aster after disaster. he even urged his leaders to flee their tribal regions toonld go away from aircraft, photography, and bombardment. >> reporter: ahead of the anniversary, a political battle ensued when the obama campaign launched a web ad. it suggested mitt romney would not have ordered an attack on bin laden. romney is firing back. >> you would have given the order, governor? >> even jimmy carter would have given that order. >> reporter: but in 2007 romney said then senator obama was wrong to launch an attack without approval from the pakistani government. >> if there are others who have said one thing and now suggest they do something else, then i'd

go ahead and let them explain it. >> reporter: republicans are criticizing president obama for politicizing obama bin laden's death. now, to mark the anniversary, romney will be in new york today with former mayor rudy giuliani and a group of firefighters. michelle? >> tara mergener in washington. thank you. for the first time the obama administration is talking openly about the use of drones to hunt dound and kill al qaeda targets. speaking in washington yesterday, counterterrorism official john brennan said targeting al qaeda weapons with lethal force is both legal and ethical. targets are chosen by weighing whether there is a chance of capturing the person against how much a threat he presents. secretary of state hillary clinton is en route to china this morning. there she'll hold high-level strategic and economic talks. they're scheduled to begin on thursday. but a human rights issue that neither side wants to discuss is the elephant in the room.

it involves a blind chinese lawyer and civil activist who is apparently holed up in the u.s. embassy. danielle nottingham reports. >> reporter: secretary of state hillary clinton has little to say about chinese human akty shift chen in the hours on the night before she leaves for beijing. >> i'm not going to address the specific case at this time. >> reporter: but she did say human rights would be discussed among other issues. including trade and communicate. >> a constructive relationship including talking very frankly about those areas where we do not agreed. >> reporter: chen is agreed to be under u.s. protection in beijing after his daring escape from house arrest last week. the blind lawyer had been detained for years after he exposed forced abortions under china's one-child policy. he released a video after his escape asking beijing not to

crammed onto the boat, many riding on the roof, when a violent storm hit. the search for victims continues this morning. the american automobile association says a stretch of new york highway where seven members of the same family were killed has inadequate safety features. a van carrying the family flew off the bronx river parkway on sunday. the van plunged six stories into a ravine. the aaa says the section of the highway where the accident happened has inadequate guardrails, narrow lanes, and a dangerous curve. the wife of the chief prosecution witness in john edwards' criminal trial is expected to return to the witness stand today. sherry young testified yesterday that edwards asked her husband andrew young to take responsibility for his pregnant mistress. she told the jury edwards just fiefd using donor money to hide rielle hunter. hunter said she decided to live with the lie because she didn't

want to jeopardize edwards' campaign. on the "cbs moneywatch," new chance for barnes and noble. ashley morrison is here in new york with that and a whole lot more. good morning, ashley. >> good morning to you, michelle. u.s. economy drag dound the overseas market. tokyo lost 2% while hong kong's hang saeng is closed for a holiday. april turned out to be the first losing month of the year on wall street. on monday the dow was down 14 points while the nasdaq fell 22. for the month, the dow slid nearly 1%, the nasdaq dropped almost 1.5%. delta is buying its way into the fuel business. the airline announced it's spend 1g $50 million to acquire an oil refinery near philadelphia. delta is planning to use the facility to make its own jet fuel. the company hopes the investment will end up cutting about $300 million a year from its fuel bill and by owning a refinery,

delta would protect itself from dramatic swings in gas prices. meanwhile, microsoft is making a $300 million investment in barnes & noble. two companies are teaming up on a venture of selling ebooks and college textbooks. they will compete against amazon.com and gives microsoft entry into the ebooks business. occupy wall street activists are calling for nationwide demonstrations today to mark mayday. a group of ferry workers in the san francisco bay area will strike today, prompting officials to cancel services. the workers had been working without a contract since last summer yoo sa summer. and say good-bye to part of the-strip. the 23-year-old casino closed down to make way for a $500 million shopping and entertainment complex called the link but o'shea's company caesars says the irish-themed
