bmw. >> at that stop sign, rodney runs over and punches her through the open window. >> reporter: james lily gives an account of the chilling encounter in a new book called fatal destiny. >> bernard miller who was standing in the median ran across to help get her out of the car. >> reporter: pam jumpedded up, and reached through the window to get her daughter, but her arm got caught in the seat belt. and soon she would be draggedded by the two men who sped off in her car. >> she's screaming, my baby. one eyewitness saw her tumble forward and her head strike the ground. >> reporter: this trail would last for nearly two miles. they stopped here, stepped over her body and tossed her daughter out on the side of the

road. luckily, someone driving behind them got the toddler to safety, but no one could save pam. >> it was horrific and that's the only word to describe it. >> reporter: the retired officer was the first person on the scene. she found pam's mangled body. >> on my game, i probably would have picked something up. >> reporter: in this video never shown before as she puts the baby in the car seat, rodney walks by followed by miller. steve had unknowingly picked up his wife's killers on camera. >> because of the nature of the day, i got careless. >> reporter: pam's two killers were captured after a reign of terror that shook the nation. >> a car jacking turned into a killing. >> what do you do to somebody that would throw a baby out a window? >> reporter: they were arrested and put on trial. miller thought for sure he

would get away with murder. >> he said, they're going to find me not guilty. >> these guys had no remorse, no sense of what they had tun. >> reporter: they were convicted and sentenced to life in prison. they were left to live a life without their beloved pam. >> and it took a longtime for all of us to, you know, get normal again. >> reporter: nearly to years later, steve struggles with the violence that stole his wife, gripped a community and left broken families in its wake. >> letting go. >> reporter: but he also clings to the good memories. >> this is the happiest day? >> one of them. >> reporter: steve knows that pam would be proud of their daughter. he hopes his wife will be remembered for more than just one tragic moment in time. >> probably the smartest person in the room. and then she acted like she was

just a kid, a loving mother and heart. >> reporter: pam and steve's daughter will graduate from college this year. rodney got life plus 60 years. and miller got life with the possibility of parole because he was 16 at the time of the crime. his efforts to get parole have failed to-date. >> and we ought to note that this crime was so brutal for what happened after pam was dead. >> reporter: yeah, they continued to brutalize her, they drove into a barbed wire fence, left her in the middle of the road. and then drove to a car wash to attempt to wash away the rest of her remains. and all these years later, everybody has the same question, why? why didn't you just give her the baby. that's all she wanted. she said, my baby, my baby, not my car, my car. and they never gave her the baby. >> wow, still no explanation.

the anniversary. >> not only were we able to drive al-qaeda out of afghanistan, and a year ago, we were able to finally bring osama bin laden to justice. >> reporter: but in an evening address beamed back to the united states, the president said there may be a role for another terror group. >> my administration has been in direct discussions with the taliban. we have made it clear that they can be a part of the future if they break with al-qaeda, renounce violence and abide by afghan laws. >> reporter: he signed an agreement with afghanistan's president that promises american support for a decade after 2014 after nato troops leave the country. >> the afghan people will understand that the united states will stand by them. >> reporter: the united states will continue to train afghan troops and target al-qaeda even after most american troops return home. >> and some of your buddies say

romney says is making an event that united americans political. and tomorrow, newt gingrich is expected to officially suspend his campaign. that announcement is scheduled to happen in arlington. in a video on his website, newt gingrich thanked all of the supporters for their hard work. the former speaker of the house says he will back mitt romney in the november election. five people are in hot water accused of trying to blow up a bridge in cleveland. the fbi arrested the men last night. the suspects purchased what they thought were explosives from undercover agents. the fbi says the public was never in danger and none of the suspects are affiliated with terror organizations. occupy demonstrators took to the streets across the country today, protesting economic inequality.

the may day protesters turned violent in some cases. in seattle, a group of demonstrators vandalized local businesses. police had to arrest dozens of people, excuse me, in new york and oakland for disrupting traffic. we are live outside the white house tonight. and ken, any problems with protest down there? >> reporter: not over here. what we saw here today was a lot more tame than what we saw throughout the country. for the first time in months, we saw dc occupiers come together and make a whole lot of noise. about 200 protesters were on the move again on dc street, marching toward the white house. they chose may day as a symbolic day to sound off for the cause of the 99%. >> income disparity, folks who lost their jobs and homes. >> reporter: this coincides with the one year anniversary of osama bin laden's death.

and now the protesters are hoping this time around they can get the attention of white house officials. the chanting, demonstrations are all too familiar of the movements last fall. and now the protesters are vowing to continue sounding off. >> this is celebration, trying to bring occupiers who may have trickled off during the winter months back. >> reporter: today's march was more symbolic than anything else because president barack obama is not in washington tonight. he is in afghanistan. we're live tonight outside the white house news now. two firefighters injured, dozens of people out of their homes tonight after an apartment building inferno. the blaze broke out this afternoon in the 2800 block in silver springs. investigators tell us it started in the attic of the complex and quickly spread to other buildings. one of the firefighters has minor injuries and the other has serious but nonlife

threatening injuries. tomorrow morning, a jury returns to the deliberation room in hopes of reaching a verdict in the sex abuse trial of michael gardner. the business man is accused of molesting three young girls who attended his daughter's slumber party last summer. today the defense and prosecution delivered their closing argument and the jury deliberated for two hours before going home for the night. last week we told you about the new rules handed down by the white house. now they'll be dishing up ethics training for about a hundred agents. the classes are scheduled to start this week in maryland. all comes in the wake of last month's scandal involving agents and hookers in columbia. taxpayers are going to pay more for transportation. the price tag has gone up 1 is million dollars. that -- up $11 million. that brings the grand tote toll

atlanta firefighters battling a four-alarm blaze. one of the buildings has partially collapsed. fortunately, no injuries reported and. we have no idea yet on what caused it. the city's planning commission is set to vote this week on a controversial development project in the corridor. >> groups representing tenants say the project can lead to higher rent and force thousands of working class families out. tonight, they held a rally outside city hall. >> pushing the all the hardworking people out. it's not fair. >> the group says city has been trying to put more affordable housing units into the plan, but it's not enough. the planning commission is scheduled to vote on the plan at a public meeting thursday night. a hero's welcome tonight. >> no, we are not talking about
