she's already very busy this morning and it's only 5:00 and howard bernstein, things are quieting down compared to yesterday. >> we are not rocking and rolling but there are some storms that pushed into eastern maryland. up north you might get a visit from a shower or storm the next couple of hours. we are cloudy. a little mist in areas, some fog in the mountains. temperatures are in the 50s to low 60s well south of town. we've got 64 by 9:00. 74 by noon. we'll start to see sun earlier today with temperatures with the sunshine getting into the low to mid-80s. there's a chance you'll see a storm later on. the storms this morning developed up north and pennsylvania. you can see them dropping into northeastern maryland. they're also hanging around toward pittsburgh and the pike, bedford. this is getting close to howard county north of i-70 so we'll be watching that over the next few hours. let's go to monika santami 5:00 a.m. time saver traffic. >> thank you so much, howard. it's a good news, bad news situation. the good news is that the

accident that happened at about 3:30 this morning on the inner loop of the beltway before route 50 has been cleared up. the bad news is that it was there for so long. it was involving a tractor- trailer and a passenger vehicle. but you should be go on the southbound side of 495 there. in southern maryland in clinton southbound route 5, branch avenue, that accident also in its clearing stages right now. let's go over to the other side of town. there had been overnight construction closing the eastbound dulles toll road at route 7. that should be cleared up right now as well at 5:01 in the morning. let's take a live look at 66 on the inbound side. no issues to report as cow in from manassas and centreville to around route 50 and the beltway. in my next report, we'll take a look at 95 in virginia at 5:10. >> thank you, monika. today a judge will decide how much time former d.c. councilman harry thomas will serve in prison. >> he pleaded in january to stealing $350,000 which was

intended for youth sports -- sports programs. delia goncalves is live outside the court previewing the proceedings today. >> reporter: i was here four months ago when thomas stood on these steps and read a statement of apology, apologizing to his family and his constituents after he pled guilty to the charges against him. now he returns to court to find out if he will be sentenced to three and a half years like the government recommends or just 18 months behind bars like his defense suggests. harry thomas, jr. admitted to stealing money meant for his youth baseball league to pay for lavish vacations and high priced vehicles. records show he started taking city money just days after he was elected to office. but his supporters have written the judge asking for leniency, asking the judge to consider his years of public service. thomas comes from a long line of activists in ward 5. his father was a long-time former council member for the ward and his mother a school

administrator. the mayor was asked earlier this week about whether or not he has spoken to harry thomas, jr. he hasn't spoken to him in the recent past he says. he has spoken to thomas' mother. he says on the record thomas comes from a good family and he doesn't know what went wrong. he says his heart goes out to the family. however, it is this kind of corruption that is fueling the race to fill his vacant council seat. coming up at 5:30, we'll have more on the special election coming up in just a matter of a couple of weeks. back you to. >> delia goncalves live outside u.s. district court. well, the biggest caps fans in your office might not be in the mood to talk today. >> that's because they're both tired and disappointed after the caps' heartbreaking triple overtime loss. kristen berset watched it unfold at verizon center. what a game three wednesday night. the capitals and rangers lost in a dead heat battle for over four hours at the verizon center. it was the caps' first triple

overtime game this post-season. and the longest game in the 2012 playoffs. unfortunately for the capitals, one mistake led to a game- winning goal by marrian gaprick. >> it definitely hurts. we have to be proud of how well we played. guys are diving the block shots, doing a lot of the things that we needed to do to win hockey. if we play like that most of the time, we'll come out on top. >> could have gone either way. guys don't have their full legs. you know, it was a slow paced game out there by the end of it. one mistake and that was the difference. >> triple overtime, it's a special game but it's just one game and we've got to bounce back. >> reporter: despite giving up the game-winning goal, what a performance by braeden holty. big save after big save, 47 in

total. >> i played to the best of my abilities with the group we have. i'm confident we'll win four games out of seven. >> reporter: all in all a tough loss for the caps. they are now 0-4 when a game goes to at least three overtimes but they have a chance to rebound on saturday. game four right here at the verizon center. from the phone booth, i'm kristen berset, 9 sports now. today republican presidential candidate mitt romney will make more appearances with virginia governor bob mcdonnell, this time in southeast virginia. wednesday romney spoke to women business owners in chantilly before attending an evening fund-raiser in pentagon city. the presumptive g.o.p. nominee also has less competition this morning. former house speaker newt gingrich officially suspended his campaign yesterday in arlington. he is now promising to endorse romney. maryland will hold a special session to settle its budget battle. governor martin o'malley, senate president mike miller

and house speaker michael bush have agreed to reconvene the general assembly on may 14. lawmakers will try to replace the so-called doomsday budget that would cut $500 million in state spending starting july 1. speaker miller says he expects the -- president miller rather says he expects itself general assembly to pass the new budget within a couple of days. a falls church virginia businessman has been convicted of sexually abusing two girls who were at his daughter's slumber party. an arlington county jury found michael gardner guilty on to have the counts related to the girls. jurors deadlocked over the claims of a third accuser who came forward after the first two. prosecutors presented d.n.a. evidence from the first two girls from their underwear and pajamas. the jury recommended a 22-year prison sentence for gardner. police have made an arrest in an apartment fire that turned out to be arson. 24-year-old abraham kilfou was charged with first degree arson. he reportedly confessed to

investigators. the tuesday night fire injured two firefighters and damaged nearly three dozen apartments. investigators say he lived at the apartment complex and is a relative of a tenant. more than a hundred people there are now out of a home. a major retailer decides not to carry one popular e- reader anymore. jessica has that story coming up in your money. still ahead, new penalties announced against some of the players involved in the saints bouncing scandal. we're coming up on 5:09 on this thursday morning. clouds out there. maybe a little drizzle in one or two spots. one northeast of town toward baltimore and north of 70 we have a few showers and thunderstorms going on there. our day planner, though, has the threat of a couple of thunderstorms mainly later this afternoon. we'll have the clouds this morning breaking up toward midday. 74 by noon with highs in the low, maybe mid-80s and a threat for an isolated storm or two as well. i'll be back in just a few minutes and talk about the upcoming weekend. right now monika is in with time saver traffic. on the northbound side of i- 95 things look grate from dale city -- great from dale city up to the 14th street bridge. coming up in my next report, good news on the beltway in prince george's county at 5:17. it is 5:09. time for the latest your money report of the morning. >> that is why jessica doyle is here. >> wall street is hoping today's economic results are a little bit better than yesterday's economic results. we'll get the rally going

again. we have chain stores releasing their april sales figures and have some data on how many americans applied for unemployment benefits. that's coming out this morning as well. stocks were mixed after new reports showed private companies hired fewer workers than expected in april. checking the numbers, the dow stands this morning at 13,269, only 11 points away from the four-year high we reached the other day. the nasdaq reversed an early loss to close 9 points higher and the s&p 500 was down 3.5. wall street will also be watching as a local company shares -- sells shares to the public for the first time. the carlisle group was priced at 22 bucks a share. that values the d.c. company at 6.7 million. carlisle will begin trading this morning on the nasdaq under the ticker symbol tg. going forward you won't be able to find the kindle at

good morning. welcome back to 9news now. we're coming up on a:15 on this thursday morning. howard is here. you definitely want to keep your umbrella handy. >> especially northeast of town. there may be an isolated thunderstorm. we had them north of town yesterday afternoon and evening. this morning we're starting to show you the storms that are out there coming in from pennsylvania. they've slipped into northeastern maryland. if you're traveling northeastern toward baltimore, especially early this morning, going up into caroll county, going up to the eastern shore, maybe over to chestertown, ir' going to run into these showers -- you're going to run into these showers and storms quite earl. hagerstown, you seem to be okay for now. there's a lot of stuff just off to your north and west. to the east. we're seeing the stuff come through caroll county headed toward ellicott city. this is the baltimore beltway. here's bwi. if this stuff keeps moving, could be a couple of flight delays up there as well from

the showers and storms in the region. around here on our bus stop forecast, plenty of clouds. a little bit of fog in the mountains. temperatures have cooled into the 50s. most areas some low 60s south and west with the showers north and northeast and sunrise at 6:08. for the day today, clouds this morning. they'll break up i'd say earlier than yesterday with a chance of a thunderstorm. isolated stuff as we get into the afternoon with highs in the low to maybe mid-80s with enough sun. right now on the cool side. mid-50s from leesburg at 54 to 57 you're seeing in centreville and 55 rockville, bethesda, columbia, crofton all at 55 degrees. 56 in springfield. in washington right now as we look outside on our michael & son weather camera, a little bit of that low cloud cover, haze around the capitol. decent advice i can'ts about 5 -- visibilities about 5 to 6 miles in washington. dew point 53. a lot of moisture in the air. humidities are high in the 80% rieng. there are the showers and storms here. we've got a lot going o.

moisture coming off the gulf. some of that will come up and over. a little ridge just off to our south and west. yes we had temperatures in the 80s in places not that far away, just south and west of us. we stopped in the mid-70s. baltimore was in the mid-60s. a little boundary right on top of us and that is probably not going to be as strong today so we're expecting the clouds to break up as we head toward noon. this afternoon we'll watch and see what pops up to the north and west. anything that pops north and west will move southeast with the upper level flow so that's what we have to watch. isolated strong storms later on and this evening we can't rule out a shower or storm. tomorrow here we are in the morning, some spotty stuff north. as we go with the daytime heating you see the showers and storms pop for the afternoon in spots. today 84 degrees. tonight won't be as cool, in the 60s. tomorrow 87. it will be the warm day. scattered afternoon storms. a spotty storm not out of the question saturday, around 80. sunday and monday cooler, in the 70s.

could be a few more showers or storms late tuesday into wednesday. it's 5:17. time saver traffic with monika. i'm happy to say that two separate accidents that we had early this morning in prince george's county and in southern maryland have been cleared, including the beltway. inner loop side you can see a bit of slow traffic trying to get to route 450 again where the accident has been cleared. the other one in clinton, southbound branch avenue also gone. if you're planning to head to the north side of the beltway, things are looking great. all lanes open between college park and silver spring. you can see just got a bit of volume forming. no big deals yet. as you head southbound on 95 should be okay as well coming in from baltimore. over to 270, looking great in from frederick. no problems down through into clarks burke. just a few people out -- clarksburg. just a few people out here. traffic still moving at a good pace down into rockville. we'll take a look at the american legion bridge at 5:24.

5:21. probably going to need a light jacket or sweat shirt early this morning as we dip into the 50s but it's going to be another warm afternoon and it's kind of human as -- humid as well. had showers north and east of us affect be the baltimore region, northeastern maryland even into northern frederick and caroll counties. by 9:00 more clouds than anything else. low 60s. lunch time we're looking at 74, partly sunny conditions. we'll get into the afternoon hours with temps getting into the low 80s by 3:00 but notice out to the west some showers and storms starting to pop. they'll be moving southeast. we'll have to watch what develops northwest because that could affect us late today.

here's what's making news at 5:22. roger clemens' former teammate may have helped in his defense. under cross-examination yesterday, andy pettitte who is now back with the yankees admitted he may have misunderstood a conversation the two had had about human growth hormone more than a decade ago. roger clemens is accused of lying to congress about using performance enhancing drugs in major league baseball. he was known for his smile and enthusiasm for the game of football. now police are investigating yesterday's shooting death of junior seau as a suicide. the 43-year-old former linebacker played on the only san diego chargers team to make it to a super bowl back in 1994. new developments in the n.f.l. 's bounty gate scandal. linebacker jonathan vilma has been suspended. three other players received

lesser suspensions than this. after the sports-related stories, perhaps the capitals' loss early this morning won't seem as bad... not. >> after washington and new york both scored a goal in the second period, the game stayed tied at one and then stayed tied and then stayed tied. it went to a third overtime last night. the rangers marian gaberick finally got one pass to the goalie -- pass by goalie braden holty. the nationals broke their losing streak thanks to bryce harper. the rookie scored in the fourth on a hustle base from second place to the -- base to the plate. he ended the game with a walkoff homer. nats win 5-4.

around pittsburgh we've got some storms that may track to north central maryland as well. we'll have to watch that over the next few hours. the immediate concern if you're tracking up 95 or 295 headed toward baltimore this morning, you're going to run into some wet weather. everything moving off toward the south and east. temps in the 50s. it's sort of damp out there, too. a little mist in spots. we've got some fog in the mountains with 53 in petersburg, west virginia. 57 in winchester. the warmer stuff down south. orange 61. culpeper 57. they could be in the upper 80s this afternoon where to the east we may stay in the 70s right along the bay. expecting temps in the low, possibly middle 80s here in d.c. it is 5:29. monika santami, thursday morning being a little busy already. it started off really busy. i'm happy to say things right now are a little calmer than they were earlier this morning. we did have an accident on the beltway inner loop side near route 450. that was cleared up.

in frederick just getting word of debris in the roadway at 144. you see the tiny bit of yellow forming slowing out of frederick into clarksburg but no big deals to report on 270. we'll go outside live on the southbound side of 275 as i said things are -- 270 as i said things are final. the outer loop of the beltway still looking good leaving the 95 interchange. this time all the way to the west side coming in on 66. that's incident free in from manassas to centreville to fairfax. all of your lanes are open. we'll take a live look at 295 inside the beltway. here's what it looks like at duke street. things look great to the 14th street bridge. back to you. >> thanks, monika. the parents of the south capital street shooting victims are anxiously waiting for the jury's decision. >> the jurors got the case a week ago. five men are charged in a series of march 2010 shootings in southeast washington. the shootings ended with the killing of four people attending the funeral for the first shooting victim.

jurors heard about eight weeks of testimony before they began deliberations. the college park bouncer is now facing several charges connected to a beating saturday night. police say 28-year-old marcus plumber became physical to a customer who tried to reenter r.j. bentley's after getting thrown out. plumber is charged with first and second degree assault. the victim is a mechanic of the honor guard in the district -- member of the honor guard in the district. police say he's hospitalized but in stable condition. a judge will decide how long harry thomas will spend in prison. the former d.c. council resigned his seat in january when he pleaded guilty to stealing more than $350,000 in city funds. 9news reporter delia goncalves is live at u.s. district court with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. harry thomas, jr. facing up to three and a half years behind bars. his defense team will ask for just 18 months behind bars. he said after he pled guilty he

let his family down and his constituents who are now trying to heal from that betrayal. thomas pled guilty in january to stealing $350,000 in city money meant for kids. his northeast home was raided just before charges were filed and vehicles were seized by the federal government. now the corruption scandal has severely divided the ward trying to elect a new council member to replace him. the special election is less than two weeks away and most of the candidates have had to convince voters they are honest and intend to work for the people of the ward, not for their own personal gain as many said harry thomas, jr. proved to do. the special election which is held may 15 will cost taxpayers nearly as much as harry thomas, jr. eventually pled guilty to stealing from them in the first place. $300,000. coming up at 6:00, we'll tell you how harry thomas just got

his hands on all that money. andrea, back to you. >> delia goncalves with that live update outside u.s. district court. today a judge will sentence the prince william county mother who helped barricade her three daughters inside their home in bristow. christina moore pleaded guilty to charges last fall. drywall had been secured over the wall holding the sisters ages 3, 4 and 18 months. the eldest girl escaped and went to neighbors for help. moore's boyfriend was sentenced to three years probation. this afternoon the loudoun county parents charged for their children's tardiness at school are scheduled to go to trial. mark and amy danakoure are charged with a misdemeanor. their children have been late to school more than 85 times since september. they say the majority of that time they missed the opening bell by only a few minutes but

at 5:38 out on the weather terrace. it is misting a little bit out here. we're in the 50s. sort of cool and a little damp. we are going to see a much warmer afternoon and a threat of some showers this morning north and east. day planner calling for those clouds to be around. there's some fog in the mountains by the way of west virginia. we'll be in the low to mid-70s by noon. with the sunshine we should make low to mid-80s. there will also be a chance for a late day thunderstorm in a couple of spots. i'll be back in about five minutes with your seven-day forecast. now back to monika. got word of an accident in centreville involving a bus on route 29 southbound right at i- 66 with crews on the scene. i'll keep you posted on this situation coming up in my next report. back to you, mike. it is 5:39 now. there's been a scar on the face of the u.s. supreme court for some time now but now repairs are about to begin on the front facade of the supreme court building. a chunk of marble fell off the facade and smashed into the

building steps below in 2005. crews will start putting up scaffolding and the work is expected to take almost two years for that. the work shouldn't hinder anyone getting in and out of the building however. this morning there's a new record in the art world. the scream is the famous painting depicting human anxiety. it was created in 1895 and four copies were made. the only one still in private hands was auctioned off last night. an anonymous buyer picked it up for nearly $120 million. that surpasses the previous artwork auction recorded by -- record rather by $13 million. art experts say the stream is the second most recognized painting in the world after the mona lisa. >> i've never done any research but when i look at it on video, it looks like a bunch of crayola crayons. >> people have tried to steal it many times. >> a lot of money. 5:40. ron paul is the only other

light winds. should see more sunshine this afternoon. that will help us get above the 80-degree mark with a chance of an isolated thunderstorm or two. anything that develops like yesterday could be on the strong storm. we're looking at thunderstorms across southwestern parts of pennsylvania from mitsburg to bedford. then it dips into northeastern maryland here and southern jersey and delaware. you can see baltimore getting it right now. i'm going to zoom in on live doppler 9000 hd. everything is coming down right through westminster. column yarks just to your north and east. some showers around bwi this morning. maybe some flashes of lightning as well. it's 59 fredericksburg. the air mass just to the south and west by 50 miles is a lot warmer than 50 miles east of us. there's this battle going o. yesterday we got stuck in the 70s. that boundary never really cleared us. baltimore didn't get out of the 60s. it was in the 80s in places off to our south and southwest. today i think we'll get more of the warm air than the cool air
