. you can see the fear on their faces. local teenagers locked up with hard core criminals while our tv cameras roll and the sparks fly. plus the restaurant report. we reveal more of your favorite places busted for health violations. but first tonight, a house of god turned into a house of horror. >> how an apparent murder-suicide unfolded inside a local church. this is 9news now. >> and that is breaking news right now. a place of worship has turned into the scene of a bloody murder. howard country police say a woman is dead, another in critical condition after a gunman shot them at st. peters episcopal church. >> ken is there. police believe the gunman then killed himself. >> reporter: that's right. that man was found in an area right off to the church.

police believe that he died from a self inflicted gunshot wound. they believe he is more than likely their suspect. tonight police are still inside the church, inside that office you see right now. that is where the two women were shot. and now the town of ellicott city is left stunned by what happened here tonight. ski 9 was over st. peters episcopal church as a police swat team moved in, guns drawn. >> there was a cop standing behind the church like they were trying to keep somebody coming from out of the church. >> reporter: a janitor called for help after he found two women shot in one of the church's office. neither of the victims are being identified. one of them is was dead by the time they got here. cops in full force blocked off the area as frightened neighbors watched on. >> there was a whole bunch of commotion. >> reporter: officers combed the area for hours. as they searched the nearby woods, they found a man that shot himself to death.

the handgun was right next to him. >> we're looking into the real possibility that he may be linked in some way to what happened at the church. >> reporter: what is still unclear is what led up to the horrific crime. police don't have a motive and no one seems to be able to make sense of the nightmare. >> the church honestly. that's crazy. >> reporter: as of last check, that survivor still remains in critical condition at an area hospital. police are still being very tight lipped tonight about the identities of those involved. but a big question is why did this even happen in the first place? clearly investigators have their work cut out for them. we're live in ellicott city, ken molestina, 9news now. >> thank you, ken. and we're also following some breaking weather news tonight. a strong line of thunderstorms now moving through our area. topper shutt joins us with more on the storm alert. top. >> these are slow moving storms. we talked about that this evening. if they developed, they'll be severe and that's the case.

right now there are no severe thunderstorm warnings in effect. they have expired. but in montgomery county and frederick county, pretty heavy thunderstorms. rainfall rates 1-2 inches per hour. we're looking at heavy activity towards the north of gaithersburg, straddling i270. they're all moving off to the south and east in the next hour. i do want to kind of move up to this one storm. this has hail in it. kind of surprised there is not a warning out for this particular storm. it may be a little bit too small. but this is a very severe storm. very heavy storm approaching sugar low. there could be some hail right around this road northwest of sugar low and also right around park mills road as well. we will come back and talk about why we are going to declare tomorrow a severe weather alert day. anita. >> all right, topper. he stole $350,000 meant to go to programs for kids. today a judge sentenced former dc councilman harry junior to 38 months behind bars.

he pled guilty for stealing the money and filing false tax returns. he'll report to prison in a few years. we've been putting the spotlight on underage drinking and drug use and the destructive places to which they can leave. 9 wants you to know about a program that offers young offenders to turn their lives around and wipe criminal records clean before it's too late. andrea mccarren takes us to maryland's eastern shore, a warning there is strong language in this report. >> reporter: you now belong to queen anne's county detention center. beyond the wire and thick metal doors are convicted murders, rapist and drug dealers. and on this night, teenagers. >> you are now mine. i am now your mom, your dad, your sister, your brother. i am now it. got it? >> reporter: most are 18 and 19 years old. one, just 14. caught with alcohol or marijuana, this is their chance. >> okay.

>> i never really thought of the idea that marijuana is illegal until i got arrested for it. >> that's 50,000 volts, and i'm not afraid to use it and i have a warden that knows it will only be used when necessary. >> reporter: behind bars, anything can be a weapon. even a plastic food tray. . >> the female inmates taunt the teens as they walk past their holding cell. moments later, they'll come face-to-face. >> i would rather deal with 900 men than 1 female. and you're going to find out why right now. >> we're not trying to scare them. what we're trying to show is exactly what is going to happen if they continue on the path that got them placed in this program. >> reporter: this is the reset program intended to motivate teens to reset their attitudes and behavior. >> having an opportunity to learn from a mistake without

having a criminal record to follow you is huge. >> you all need to stand up. stand up. stand up. we got to stand up. you all got to stand up. >> you think that's cool? you think that's something you want to do. >> reporter: the teenage girls didn't last long. >> i have more years. do you want to do that? for some marijuana. >> reporter: the inmates say their lives unrafeled because of alcohol and drugs and they've been abandoned by the friends they thought they had. >> those friends will be the ones that will testify against you in a courtroom so they don't have to go to jail. >> we hold them all, and that's going to be your cell buddy. >> reporter: the reset programs shows a glimpse of a meal in jail and what a strip search involves. >> they're going to have you bend over, get naked, spread your cheeks and check the family jewels. >> once you get in, it's so hard to get out. >> reporter: they offer straight talk about how their

tonight. last week maryland's highest court ruled that the dogs are inherently dangerous ruling and under that rule people with those dogs living in their property are libel for what they do. >> when they attack, they don't stop. this is what ends up killing people. they're the top skilg dog breed. >> to say -- killing dog breed. >> to say all pit bulls is inherently dangerous is absolutely untrue. >> now, people who support the ruling hope other states will follow maryland's lead. but they hope they do not. dogs are trained to be aggressive. they're not born that way. an autopsy report released tonight confirms the death of former nfl junior suie was a suicide. his body found yesterday at his california home with a gunshot wound to the chest and a gun found nearby. there are some big names tonight in the health department closures at area eateries. >> uh-huh. and for us one is pretty close

to eat. >> here is russ ptacek with had week's restaurant report. >> reporter: tonight we start right down the street from our studios where i've taken my own dinner break. this food establishment is what greeted wisconsin avenue northwest customers friday at ruby tuesday, a spokesman attributed it to paperwork oversite saying at no time were there any food safety risks. what happened inside is what health officials called an imminent health hazard. they didn't have a certified manager on duty to ensure safe handling and it has happened before. watch close. you may remember the rat that's about to cross your screen. that was two weeks ago when we reported on the temporary closure of mid city deli at logan circle. a week after our report, inspectors shut it down again siting circumstances that

may endanger the public. neighbors blame it on an outside trash site. >> there is a rat problem near there at the dumpsters. >> has it gotten better? >> no. >> reporter: the absence of a licensed food safety manager shut down six area restaurants in total after the past two weeks. besides ruby tuesday, they closed five other restaurants for operating without hot water, they closed food service at riverside lounge on georgia avenue in wheaton. in alexandria, wing zone and in the district 7-11 on georgia avenue northwest. in prince george's county, health officials shut down four illegal mobile kitchens. district officials shut down operations at lucky corner at north avenue. both for conditions that may endanger public health. family dollar on 8th street northeast closed for failing to

caught on tape, police say the mom of a suspected shoplifter put her children at risk trying to get away from security. it all went down at a target store. surveillance cameras rolling as the guards try to stop the mother at the door. they end up tussling over the baby carrier. when they're doing it, the baby is still inside. check it out. there it is. there is the tussle. the mother eventually breaks free. she and the other two small children dart across the parking lot. >> it almost appears like she's using the child as a wen on and a cheeld. -- weapon and a shield. she had a complete disregard for

washington. kristen fischer, 9news now. >> it will be parked in different locations on different days. are you guys ready to shop? >> oh, we are so pumped. >> you should have heard all of the gasps. >> oh, my goodness. >> it was a good accessory to get a girl excited. >> that's what i'm saying. we had a couple thunderstorms tonight. some were severe. we have a better chance for tomorrow. we're looking at a better chance for showers and storms, hail and strong gusty winds. let's start with live doppler 9000. there are no warnings out but some pretty big storms. they're very slow movers. they're going to produce flash flooding as well. showers in montgomery county and then off to the west. we will start off to the west right now. we'll zoom out 66 a little bit. and this is a pretty heavy storm right around 15. and we're looking at the activity moving essentially east, southeast. this is going to go through

chantilly. kind of move down 50 between 50 and centreville and maybe across 29 in the next 45 minutes. this just has heavy rain in it denoted by the red there. in is a pretty hef -- this is a pretty heavy storm too. this had hail in it at the top of the show. now it just has heavy rain. and this is also moving on the west side of 270 down to the south and east. the heaviest storm or at least right now is in montgomery county. and this is in -- on the east side of 270 around gaithersburg and it extends all the way over to durwood past rockville. this had hail in it. right now it just has rainfall rates. it's moving very, very slowly. so you're going to see some pretty heavy rains in the rockville area headed over to allegheny and silver springs before it's out. this is going to move essentially right across georgia avenue and right across new hampshire avenue in the next hour. so some of our yards need rain and, by golly, we're going to

get some rain here. right now a live look outside. our weather cam brought to you by michael and sons. it's still 70s. winds calm. all right. the future cast. tomorrow morning no worries. you don't need to worry about rain or showers tomorrow morning. i want to take a lunch break, a walk outside, you can do that too. but by meaning, a better chance for showers and thunderstorms moving across the entire metro area, and that's why we've declared tomorrow a severe weather alert day. so just sort of keep that in mind. you'll need your sunglasses friday along with your umbrella. even warmer on friday. but thunderstorms could be heavy. some could be severe. and we're looking at the weekend. good news here. weekend is looking better. in fact, maybe totally dry on saturday. and that's good news. lots of stuff going on there this weekend. so overnight looks like this. isolated thunderstorms ending. partly cloudy and mild with fog. especially the areas that have the showers earlier tonight. that's where you have the fog in the morning. next seven days, there is severe weather alert day for tomorrow.

now 9 sports with kristen berset, the best sports in town. . >> okay. i just want to start off by saying this kid is the real deal. bryce harper continues to impress us in the first week in the majors. even his manager is taking notice. today they moved him up to the number three spot. a spot originally filled by ryan zimmerman. tonight another great performance as the nats go for the series against arizona. let's start with the d-backs. top of the 6th. erin hits one. one run scores and we are all tied up. but in the bottom of the inning, q the phenom. harper hits one bringing in zimmerman. six hits, four of them have been doubles. nats when this one 2-1.
