watching 9news now at 5:00 a.m. i'm andrea roane. >> and i'm mike hydeck, thank you for joining us, that big spaceship isn't going to land until later this afternoon though. you have a little bit of time. here's monika samtani with traffic. mr. howard bernstein. >> we lost sleep last night thanks to the big storms that rolled through. right over my house. >> they knew you were -- >> trying to sleep. >> mother nature -- flexing her muscles. and she may flex her muscles again this afternoon and this evening. we should be in pretty decent shape this morning. got a little fog here ask there from the leftover moisture if last night but a much quieter morning. what's going on here today our day planner. and we have a severe weather alert day with highs in the mid and maybe even upper 80s south and southwest of town. those winds will go to the west at 5 to 10 miles per hour. we're okay through noon. 80 degrees all right after lunch and even -- at lunch and even early afternoon should be okay. but mid to late afternoon, 3:00, 4:00 some storms will develop especially out west

that will move to us. they could be strong to severe and even hail or wind gusts over 65 miles per hour. that's a severe thunderstorm. last night there they are, they're tall way -- they're dying and they're in norfolk the storms that hit us late last night. another batch of moisture toward western west virginia and to our north but at least for the next few hours looks relatively quiet to get you out the door. fog's a problem here. martinsburg three quarter mile visibility. same in culpeper. seeing some patchy fog from baltimore back through howard and parts of montgomery and frederick counties as well and temperatures probably won't need a jacket. we are in the 60s this morning but watchout. mid to late afternoon and this evening. monika has timesaver traffic now. good morning, good morning everyone, you can see the beltway is pretty much phren all around. that flown -- green all around. northbound on i-95 same story. looking great out of dale city into woodbridge across the occoquan river and into springfield. first at springfield just got a toyny bit of volume forming but

traffic is moving at speed up to the beltway. over toward annandale on the inner loop or 395 we'll go there right now on the northbound side and here at duke street the main and hov lanes also look great. no problems here. let's go back to the maps this time into downtown and take a live look at 14th street and independence avenue. nice and quiet. coming up in my next report, a look at 270. back to you. thanks monika. this morning police are trying to put together what happened inside a howard county church thursday. >> two women there were shot and one of them died and a man's body was found in some nearby woods. 9news now reporter delia goncalves is lye at the scene in ellicott city with more. good morning delia. very confusing what's going on. >> reporter: good morning andrea and pretty tragic, for many folks the church is considered sacred ground and they are simply stunned that this church was the scene of yesterday's horrific crime. here are the details we know so far. police descended on st. peter's

episcopal church yesterday at 5:30 after a janitor reported two women inside the church office were shot. one woman was dead upon arrival. the other rushed to baltimore shock trauma in critical condition. police later found a man dead in the nearby woods from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. the detectives discovered a gun lying next to his body. >> we're looking into the very real possibility that he may be linked in some way to what happened at the church. we don't think anyone else was in the church at the time. my understanding is that a custodian came into an office inside the church building where he saw the two women injured and he ran out and called 911. >> reporter: police are still not confirming the identities of the victims and of the man who was found in the woods nearby. however, you can imagine it will be a very busy day here in ellicott city. as the detectives scour the church grounds and try to identify those victims. back to you andrea, mike? >> all right, delia goncalves

reporting live from ellicott city. she used drywall to barricade her three young daughters inside a room. now prince william county judge sentenced christina moore to 18 months in prison. this whole thing happened in bristow. in march 2011. the oldest daughter used a mattress to climb over the drywall and then run for help. and a neighbor found moore and her boyfriend passed out in the house. lawyers say they were struck well drug addiction -- struggling with drug addiction at the time. former d.c. councilman harry thomas jr. is headed to prison for more than three years. 38 month sentence is halfway between what the lawyers hoped for and what the prosecutors demanded. he stole more than $350,000 meant to go to city youth sports program. in january he pleaded guilty to stealing the money and filing false tax returns and he'll report to prison in a few weeks. maryland state majority leader rob garagiola is now facing a reprimand for an ethics violation. the joint committee on

legislative ethics received a citizen complaint about the montgomery county democrat. it was filed during his failed primary campaign in maryland's sixth congressional district. the committee found garagiola did not disclose money he made working for a lobbying firm before he took office. organizers of an effort to overturn maryland's new congressional districts are going to announce their leaders later this morning in baltimore. mdpetitions.com is trying to collect more than 55,000 signatures to force a referendum in november. they are hoping to convince voters to reject the redrawn congressional map passed by the general assembly. time for the latest your money report of the morning. >> and headline time, jess, where do we start? >> we start with jobs. we're talking about the jobs report because it's all about how many people got jobs last month. how many people gave up looking. we're going to get the numbers at 8:30 this morning and ahead of the report, stocks headed lower, checking numbers --

digging into those jobs numbers, wall street expects to see around 163,000 new jobs created last month. unemployment should hold steady at 8.2%. today's numbers are expected to be an improvement from march which saw job growth slowing to just 120,000 positions but it would be far below the average number of jobs added from december through february. a big announcement coming out of aol which of course used to make its headquarters in dallas. area thatarianna huffington is going to announce her moving. the "wall street journal" reports the structure caused tensions with other companies and one website founder actually quit in a very public -- in a very public fight with

your weather first, severe weather alert day. concern for the threat of strong to severe storms this afternoon and this evening. really after 4:00. this morning other than a patch or two of fog it's mild. temperatures in the 60s now will quickly rise into the 70s, mid 80s but again 3:00, 4:00, 5:00 strong storms could be with us throughout region scattered about through the evening hours, the full forecast in a few. right now monika with timesaver traffic. in friendship heights here's wisconsin avenue and western avenue.

good morning, welcome back to 9news now. you see it there. severe weather alert day. later in the day, but we want you to be prepared so here's howard. >> a patch or two of fog out there. right now the immediate metro for the next several hours no problems. in fact i think we're going to be in pretty good shape you this early afternoon. and then mid to late afternoon 3:00, 4:00, 5:00 and beyond, that's when our concerns will be raised. here's a look at the bus stop forecast. it will be partly sunny this morning. with that patchy fog. temperatures are mild. they're in the 60s. so if the little ones want to wear short sleeved and thirty -- sleeves and shorts today,

it's okay. sunrise 6:05. by noon about 80 degrees here with partly sunny skies. westerly winds. not too strong. 3, 4, 5 miles an hour and then this afternoon, we can get some strong winds and any storms, in fact these storms if they go severe two things can qualify it as aveer. either -- severe. either hail or 50-mile an hour winds or greater and that's the concern for the afternoon and evening hours with highs in the mid 80s. right now radar is all quiet here. out to the west though, we're watching some showers and storms coming up in toward western west virginia. a few of these are starting to get into northern west virginia and this stuff may actually come up this way to pennsylvania. this would be the only kink in the forecast for the morning hours. with some clouds out of this and maybe a stray shower far west. visibilities had the showers and storms last night maybe it woke you up. woke me up. the leftover moisture allowed fog to form in places like martinsburg half mile visibility.

same with orange. and baltimore three quarters and i know up in frederick, howard, montgomery not a lot of reporting stations up here but there's the patchy dense fog there as well. temperature-wise, it's mild in the mid 60s in town. low 60s in easton and baltimore. they're at 61. and even down toward the south we've got mid 60s at fredericksburg and mid 60s low to mid-60s 234 the czar. flush -- in the shenandoah valley. looking outside on the michael & son weather camera. good visibility this morning at the capitol dome. dew point 62 and we get the muggies out there this morning. when the dew point above 60 it's kind of muggy. 65 to 70 or greater it gets sort of sticky and uncomfortable. winds south-southwest at 8 and our humidity at 87%. what we're watching is a front coming across the midwest and the center part of the country. the storms are lining up from kansas all the way here. this front goes all the way in toward the northeastern new england. ahead of it some showers and

storms and we're in a very warm air mass and yeah thedy tame heating with -- daytime heating with the low level humidity. on top of us. main threat is going to be damaging wind gusts and large hail and this threat area is issued by the storm prediction center out of norman, oklahoma. you saw where that was mainly east of the blue ridge. but some of the storms west could fire up here. by evening time scattered showers and storms. that's 5:45. some of those are going to be strong to severe. today 86 severe weather alert day for the afternoon and evening hours. tomorrow fewer storms mainly concentrated south and southwest. we start in the 60s and we finish about 80. sunday looks great at 75. monday also great 74. and late tuesday we've got a chance for some more showers returning this way. 5:17. let's get an update on timesaver traffic. good morning, happy friday everybody. things are looking great on the beltway it's incident-free i'm happy to say and no issues to report on the bw parkway or route 50 in from baltimore and annapolis and through cheverly

going to be the late afternoon and evening hours where we're going to be concerned with the threat of strong to severe storms. here we are at 9:00. temperatures upper 60s and partly sunny skies and might be mostly cloudy for a little while. may see some storms far, far west of us here. noon isolated shower out west of winchester, we'll be partly to mostly sunny. into the middle of the afternoon, 2:00 notice some storms starting the fire here out to the shenandoah valley. out towards some of the higher elevations, they start to move east by 4:00 and could be toward culpeper and maybe getting close to manassas and hay market. and by dinner time. oh here comes some strong to severe thunderstorms scattered throughout the region. mike? rgiii gets if early practice at redskins park. >> and bryce harper once again lifts the nationals to a victory. kristen berset has highlights in your morning sports. >> good morning everybody. you know the kid is the real deal.

bryce harper continues to impress during his first week in the majors. even his manager taking notice. davey johnson yesterday moved harper up to the number three spot in the batting rotation. a spot that was originally filled by ryan zimmerman. last night it was another great performance as the nats go for the series against arizona. with the d-backs first. top of the 6th, one run scores and we are all tied up. but the bottom of the inning, cue the phenom. harper, sends one into left field corner for a double. ian desmond comes home. that would prove to be your game winner, harper six major league hits so far. four of them have been doubles. he's good. in the win 2- nats win 2-1. >> play like that is infectious you know. he sets a good example. i mean -- we have that -- the makeup on the ball club, we play hard. he takes it to another level.

good morning and welcome become to 9news now, i'm andrea roane. >> and i'm mike hydeck, grab the umbrella. you will need it today. thank you for joining us this morning, here's monika samtani. we have a severe weatherly all right day -- alert day and right to howard to explain what it is. >> not going to need it for the morning or lunch more than likely but by mid to late afternoon oh 3:00, 4:00 and beyond that's when our time frame of concern is for the threat for strong to severe storms. we had some strong winds last night even severe ones which produced hail up to an inch in spots and torrential downpours and loud thunder. this morning it's mild. we're in the mid 60s here in washington. most areas in the 60s actually. with 80 by noon and then it's

going to be this afternoon with the strong to severe storms into the evening hours. in fact the outlook for the storm prediction center across the region today under a slight risk for severe weather and here's the threats. we've got in flow still from the west and northwest. look at this push of moisture coming into western west virginia. little anxious that some of this may start to get into pennsylvania and make the turn a little earlier than late this afternoon and that's one thing we definitely have to watch. but we're in an area now which is relatively quiet at least for the next few hours. fog a concern places like warrenton. it's improving in martinsburg, they were half mile last time we checked but baltimore down to one quarter mile visibility. parts of howard, montgomery and frederick county dealing with fog this morning. there are your temperatures and very mild. it's muggy too. a lot of humidity out there available for storms to fire and with highs into the mid 80 s and maybe upper 80s west more fuel for the fire. again severe weather possible

mid to late afternoon and this evening. let's go to monika at 5:29 with timesaver traffic. good morning. good morning everybody. i'm happy to say that we're still in a good place right now on the beltway and on 66. coming in from manassas, really no big delays to report yet. as you head into centerville and at 66 here in centreville. and as you can see at route 29 still very quiet as you head inbound this morning toward the beltway. well go back to the maps this time to the gw parkway and overheight vehicle on the southbound side stuck at the memorial bridge. it's a stuck struck and authorities -- truck and authorities are on the scene there. they're going to have to back it up and move it out of the way. southbound on the gw parkway near the memorial bridge. no problems on the west side of town the entire stretch between bethesda and tysons. now back to you guys. now to campaign 2012 this morning. president obama is heading across the potomac. he's going to talk about

pregnanting students' -- protecting students' pocketbook. >> the president will speak with those at washington lee high school in arlington. he'll talk about the need to prevent interest rates on federal loans from doubling july 1st. the bill to keep rates steady is stalled in congress because republicans and democrats disagree over how to fund it. and the man expected to face president obama this fall republican presidential front runner mitt romney has a very important meeting today. he's expected to talk privately with the man who's given him the most trouble this campaign. rick santorum. after suspending his campaign last month the former pennsylvania senator said he would support romney as the nominee for his party. now to other news this morning. the investigation into a deadly shooting at a church. police in howard county found three people shot yesterday and only one of them is still alive this morning. 9news now reporter delia goncalves is live at the scene in ellicott city with more this morning. delia? >> reporter: good morning mike. i just got off the phone with police here in howard county.

they are confirming that one woman is still in critical condition. fighting for her life at baltimore shock trauma after a very bizarre shooting inside the church. and that in itself is pretty shocking for folks. police arrived at st. peter's episcopal church on rogers avenue after a janitor reported two women inside the office were shot. one woman police say was dead. the other rushed to the hospital. police scoured the church and found no one inside but a short while later investigators discovered a man in the nearby woods. they say he was suffering from a self- inflicted gunshot wound. a gun was found next to his body. residents were blocked from their homes for hours while detectives searched for clues. >> shot. around 5:10, 5:15, i walked out and there were a couple of cop cars parked outside.

that might have been the gunshot i heard the guy kills himself down by the woods. >> reporter: you can imagine lots overeatened neighbors, however some say they were a bit relieved knowing that the suspected person who could be responsible for all of this may have been found dead. now police are not calling this a murder/suicide. however, they are saying they're looking into the very strong possibility that the man who killed himself in the woods could have been responsible for what happened inside this church. still though no motive. mike back to you. >> a sad case. thanks delia live this morning. on the second anniversary of her daughter's murder, the mother of yeardley love filed a second wrongful death lawsuit. sharon love filed a $30 million lawsuit against george huguely last week. in february a jury convicted him of second degree murder in love's -- of love in may 2010. it was a beating death they say. the new suit is for $29

million. they are accused of knowing about prior offenses huguely committed and apparently not reporting them. it might be tempting for parents who are sure of their teens will want to drink to let them drink at home. but the fairfax county board of supervisors and school board proclaimed may as parents who host lose the most month. parents can face criminal charges just for hosting and more serious charges if the party leads to drunk driving or other crimes. 4:excuse me 5:34 now. time for another your money report. >> jessica doyle back with the latest on the biggest internet stock offering ever -- >> facebook, we use it every day right and that makes it worth a lot of money indeed. the initial public stock offering later this month for facebook is expected to raise nearly $12 billion making it the biggest internet ipo ever. the stock will be priced between $28 and $35 a share. that values the social

networking site at between $85 billion and $95 billion. the "wall street journal" reports facebook's purchase of instagram that photosharing website. that could add as much as 10% to its bottom line. facebook is set to go public on the nasdaq on may 18th. the general services administration is already under a cloud for a lavish conference and now a curious offer to contractors. we're going give you a tax break for making federal building more energy efficient if you qualify. you write us a check for 19% of that tax break. the gsa stopped making the offers after seven months of no takers but now some are asking for the agency was trying the raise money -- to raise money without congressional authorization. new foods are coming to the goldennages but you will have to act fast. the latest foods -- available nationwide by mid month also an

good morning, welcome back to 9news now. 5:45. weather alert day. -- severe weather alert today and the reason why, here's howard to explain. >> strong to severe storms going to be around here likely mid to late afternoon. might see one or two here later this morning. we're watching some stuff in west virginia that's been very per sis at the present time overnight and if it -- persistent overnight and if it does hold together winchester in the next two to three hours, bus stop forecast, temperatures in the 60s this morning. sun is up and it will be partly sunny. sun comes up in about 20 minutes just after 6:00 at

6:04. sets at about 8:04 this evening. our day planner, partly sunny this morning. mid 60s at 8:00. by noon 80 degrees and could be an isolated storm north and west and by mid-afternoon really going to see the stuff crank up. 85. scattered showers and storms. so if you have plans this morning even in through the early part of the afternoon. you're going to be okay i think. you can leave the dog outside. probably mid to late afternoon if you're not going get home until 4:00 or 5:00 that might not be a good idea. 8:00 79 degrees still somewhere some scattered showers and storms -- with some scattered showers and storms around. going to the nats game tonight there may be a slight interruption. when we talk about the severe weather alert day we're talking about the severe thunderstorm threat today. for the -- generally afternoon and evening hours. the critical time is 3:00 so 10:00. not that we can't get a storm before that but this is really the heart of the event that we were talking about. the main threats today are going to be some hail.

we had some hail last night and wind gusts, severe storms have winds that are 58 miles per hour or stronger. off to the west this moisture in west virginia coming into southern ohio and then look right here. just southwest of garrett county into west virginia one lone thunderstorm east of ole kins trying to hold together and maybe get to petersburg been the hour or so and it drifts to the east. with some of the moisture last night from the storms fog has been an issue a little bit. warrenton's visibility a quarter mile reported. a mile in martinsburg and up to baltimore where we're down to a quarter mile too and hopefully that won't be delaying anybody on the flight out this morning. 61 at columbia. crofton 62. got low 60s also from baden. down toward fort belvoir, reston is 62. leesburg is 64. pretty uniform on the temps with the high moisture content out there. the skies partly cloudy. starting to see a little bit of light in the sky to the east on the michael & son weather camera. 66 degrees at reagan national. winds south-southwest at 8 and the dew point is over 60.

we have some low level life in place. we have a frontal boundary up here which is coming. got in moisture trying to sneak in from the alabama area yesterday. now into west virginia. so there are a lot of things that are coming together to help produce the severe weather threat. and the area in yellow that includes the washington baltimore metros may basically east of the blue ridge, that's a severe weather risk area from the storm prediction center with the main threat being the wind gusts and the hail and it does look that by mid- afternoon, we'll be seeing the storms start the fire first out to the west and move toward us for the late afternoon rush hour and dinner time. next three days, today severe weather alert day. 86. 60s tonight. could see a few storms arnold this evening. tomorrow fewer storms better chance is south and southwest of town about 80. mid 70s sunday. sunday looks great. mondays is great at 74. then we could see some showers in here by tuesday. better chance wednesday and thursday. it is now 5:48. monika samtani is in with timesaver traffic. and we have a couple of

incidents to tell you about now. good morning everyone. first of all, southbound on the bw parkway a disabled vehicle in the road after route 202 and now word of the accident as well on the inner loop of the beltway at the bw parkway along the right side of the road. out live right now to our cameras and here's what it looks lick on 95 -- 495 the beltway at route 1 at college park and as you can see traffic here is fine. but again on the inner loop at the bw parkway watch out for that accident activity along the right side. we'll go back other to the maps this type -- actually here route 29 in colesville and down to new hampshire avenue you want to watch out for medical emergency at the intersection of new hampshire avenue and colesville road. again a medical emergency there. back to the maps, 270 just slowing down a bit. it's normal as you head into clarksburg. we'll take a live look outside again. and here's what it looks like on the beltway at river road. coming up in my next report, an update on the accident over in green belt at 6:00. back to you mike.

thanks monika. here's what's making news. authorities in texas now lifted an evacuation record for residents near a wildfire that's because the firefighters have finished constructing a containment line around the flames. two fires scorched nearly 25,000 acres new york city structures -- acres. no structures have been burned and nobody was hurt. more families may follow if a sinkhole in florida keeps growing. it opened up yesterday in a backyard and estimated to be 100 feet wide and 50 feet deep. firefighters helped the closest family evacuate and warned neighbors they could be next. if you're looking for a scenic drive this weekend check out the blue ridge parkway. it is gorgeous i can attest from personal experience. yahoo named it one of the top ten all american road trips. it starts in shenandoah national park. this year marks a decade of the avon walk for breast cancer and their walk here in

cancer centers and community organizations in d.c., maryland, virginia, the money that's raised by the avon walk washington, d.c. will stay in the area which is really nice for the people who work so hard to raise the money to see that it's impacting their own communities. over the ten years we've donated more than $62 million just in this area which is really nice know and it goes to huge cancer centers. johns hopkins and georgetown university to smaller community organizations like food and friends that serves nutritious meals to breast cancer patients that might not otherwise get a nutritious meal going through treatment. >> one of the entities you're a founding partner with the capital breast care center in washington for people who can't afford it. you even provide transportation to get people there taking away the excuses to practicing early detection and good breast health. >> absolutely and it's so port. everyone deserves the same chance at survival. not everybody is that luckiment

bernstein with you on this severe weather alert day. friday morning, 5:56. it's quiet right now but one thunderstorm there. temperatures in the 60s with plod skies, by 9:00 pushing the mid- to upper 60s and look at this. by noon, we'll be 80. partly sunny. maybe even mostly sunny but we may start to see a couple of storms firing out here eastern west virginia. that will really kick up here early this afternoon crossing the state line to the shenandoah valley i-81. 2:00 winchester 83 you could have some storms and still be okay here in the metro area. this activity is going to march to the east and these storms this afternoon as we get into the mid and later parts of the afternoon approaching the metro area tend to be strong to severe. we're worried about the threat of some hail and even damaging wind gusts through the evening hours as well. thank you howard, you heard of food trucks, how about a fashion truck? >> really? think of it as a walk-in closet on wheels and it just rolled
