going and police tell us they are looking for a black suv that had temporary tags. they believe left the scene of this incident. the victim's name has not been released. an arlington police officer hit a dog with his cruiser last night. that fact not in dispute. however, residents say that officer was speeding. at least 15 miles over the limit when he hit the yellow lab and further more, they tell us cops speed down their street all the time. police say it's not so. and peggy fox joins us live from the neighborhood. she sorts it all out. peggy. >> hi baby. oh, hi my baby. >> reporter: se sebastian is a lucky dog to come away with a few gashes. >> he was lying on the ground, not doing anything, just crying in this weird position. and then he immediately stopped

and i thought he had passed away. >> he's very lucky. the cop car was going fast and he got hit in the head. >> reporter: the veterinarian say sebastian may have neurological damage. it happened last night. just after the yellow lab mix darted out through her screen door to greet her boyfriend. >> it sounded like a gun shot. >> visiting her neighbor and ran to help. >> she was screaming with the arms around the dog. and the cop got out of his car and he was standing, he walked over to the dog. he never said, is the dog okay? are you guys okay? he was putting chap stick on his mouth. >> reporter: she believes the police officer must have been speeding. she is sure of it. >> how fast do you think the officer was going? >> 40 miles an hour. definitely fast. >> reporter: police cars speed on this street and she says she's sure of something else.

>> he did not have his headlights on, because i would have seen the headlights coming down the street. >> it could have been a child and not a dog. and if a police officer couldn't stop for that in a residential neighborhood, then he couldn't have stopped for a child either. >> that was peggy fox reporting. the latest jobs numbers are out and the news is somewhat disappointing. the unemployment rate fell slightly last month from 8.2 to 8.1%. the labor department says only 115,000 jobs were added in april. analysts say hiring slowed down significantly in the last two months and more americans are giving up their job search. the new numbers are playing into the presidential race. we'll have that coming up on 9news now at 6:00. the economic forecast does not bode well for college students. higher costs just to make it there. interest rates will double if congress fails to act soon. suray chin was in arlington.

student loan issue next week, but there is bound to be opposition in the house. anita. >> thank you. anger about being turned away from a church food bank appears to be a motive for a suicide attack at a small church in howard county. the attacker and church secretary are dead. continues to fight for her life tonight in the hospital. scott broom is live outside st. peters with more on what happened there. scott. >> reporter: well, we just finished talking to police this afternoon. there's a homeless man involved in this case here. his name is douglas franklin jones, 56 years old. apparently he was living in the woods right behind the church here. had a relationship with the church and the food bank. in the last few days or weeks, apparently his behavior had recently turned ugly and that apparently is what led to this stunning attack. it was the shocked church custodian who called 911 late yesterday. he just found two women shot

inside the church office. they were identified today as church sector, brenda brewington, mother of two who died. mary-marguerite kohn. the body of the attacker was discovered with a handgun laying near his body, a suicide. and today, this account from howard county police spokesperson, sherry. >> it's our belief that this man was living at a camp site in the woods behind the church and had been visiting the church on a regular basis to access their food bank. he recently, apparently had become difficult and argumentative with the staff and they asked him to leave. we believe that he came back with a gun and shot these two women who were working in the office at the time. >> reporter: at brenda

we have a commuter alert for you if you plan to take the metro this weekend. track work scheduled for this weekend is going forward and it means you could be delayed for up to 50 minutes. that's despite this weekend's caps and nationals game. metro says postponing the work would have created a backlog for the repairs that the agency is trying to finish before next winter. four stations will be closed on the green line. green belt, prince georges plaza and west hyattsville. there's going to be track work on the yellow, red, and orange lines. get ready to slow down if you are traveling through montgomery county. 18 new speed cameras are being activated in neighborhoods across the area, including germantown, montgomery village, and silver spring. those cameras are going to be act i active within two weeks.

donuts. two armed masked men running into the donut shop and you know what they want, they want the money. one of the robbers nearly jumps over the counter to get at it and watch as a customer in line tries to take a robber down, but look at her, she's on the floor. the second robber who is off camera is pointing a gun at the employees behind the counter. one of those robbers loading cash into a garbage bag and kicking the customer on the floor in the head as he walks out. later on, they arrested three men and one woman after they crashed their get away car. >> is that necessary? really? >> somebody who is robbing, what's necessary? >> clearly, now to the story of three bears. not three little bears. three bears and this is not a fairy tail. they spent the day in the los angeles suburb. they strolled around backyards, tumbled over fences and took a nap in a tree in the front yard of a home under construction. that's when a local reporter decided to get a closer look. >> certainly something i've

tonight in health, department closures, and for us, this one hits close to home. >> here's investigative reporter with this week's restaurant report. >> tonight, we start right down the street from our studios where i've taken my own dinner break. this food establishment closure notice is what greeted wisconsin avenue northwest customers friday at ruby tuesday. a spokesman attributed it to paperwork oversight, saying at no time were there any food safety risks. what happened inside ruby tuesday is what health officials call an imminent health hazard. they didn't have a certified manager on duty to ensure safe food handling and according to inspection reports, it had happened before. watch close, you may remember the rat that is about to cross your screen. that was two weeks ago when we reported on the temporary closure of mid city deli at logan circle. a week after our report, inspectors shut it down again

sun. if you hear thunder, you can be struck by lightning. here's doppler 9,000. they crossed i-95. they essentially crossed the river now. pretty big rain fall now. north of waldorf. all this is pushing off to the east, southeast. lighter rain as you go down 305. 301 rather. now we'll zoom out a little bit and put this into motion. will the storms hang together in the next hour? they're going to move east, southeast. essentially north of hughsville. they weakened a little bit. go all the way to calvert county. north beach, and a little bit of extreme southern anne arundel county. i don't think this is going to be the last area of showers and storms. we're going to keep it in the forecast until midnight. you see the lightning? it does have lightning around waldorf and the kids are outside playing, get them inside. 77 in bethesda. 76 in arlington. 76 in reston. 81 up in gaithersburg and low 80s in college park. we're going to keep the threat

how do you feel about your doctor's office when you walk in? hopefully it's a welcoming place. now picture this. for the last twenty years, many families in anacostia got their primary care services in a makeshift run down building made of steel. it will be different come monday. with the grand opening of a new facility that will change the landscape of urban healthcare in d.c. >> debra wilkins has three children and she's relied on the w street clinic for years. the structure that housed the clinic was supposed to be temporary. a world war ii era corrugated metal building referred to as a

hut. >> it's like a trailer, you know. it was kind of small. >> finally, a few weeks ago, the move began out of the w street health clinic to the 46,000 square foot state of the art unity anacostia health center. the before and after images are striking to say the least. >> it's easier to trust, you know, a beautiful facility. somewhere where you feel like you've been tossed. it's been a tough economy. people who always worked and went to different healthcare who say you can go over here. they say this? this is all i get? >> sharon of the d.c. primary care association says historically, healthcare access in poor communities have barely scratched the surface. >> people didn't have the opportunity to just go to the doctor. so people were grateful to have the hut and that's the sad thing about what i call the healthcare that people come to assume that's the best they can have. >> the new center was built in part with federal stimulous money that became available
