it is moving at a pretty decent clip and still could intensify a little bit. moving east, southeast at 18 miles per hour. it's a top storm. not very high in the atmosphere, which makes me feel comfortable. where could it head? it could head towards white oak village at 6:01. country club south, belle wood 6:08 and cedarville at 6:13. it's not severe, but it is rather heavy. it will produce rain fall rates up to an inch per hour. all right, let's take a lock at the radar with lightning. it did have a little more lightning before it crossed the river. so just, you know, remember if the kids are outside, you hear thunder, you can be struck by lightning. get the kids inside until the storm completely passes until you don't hear thunder any longer. temperatures, well we have a juicy atmosphere. 78 downtown. still 82 in gaithersburg.

82 in frederick. 81 in leesburg and 77 down in fredericksburg. so, atmosphere is warm and another disturbance pushing through. we'll come back and talk about that. keep the chance of showers and storms in and some could be severe. back to you guys. >> thank you, top. americans are going back to work, just not as fast. the labor department says employers added another 115,000 jobs last month. less than wall street had anticipated. president obama says he believes the unemployment rate will dip below 8% by the november elections. here is danielle nottingham with more. >> reporter: derek, the unemployment rate is down, but americans are still struggling to find work. and the new report shows many have given up looking for a job all together. the new labor department report shows 115,000 jobs created in april. many fewer than economists had expected. >> stocks dropped on the news as investors questioned the strength of the country's

economic recovery. >> reality is that the recovery really is much, much slower than we anticipated that it was. if in fact you can call it a recovery. >> the retailing industry saw the biggest gains with 29,000 jobs. but the construction industry was one of the biggest losers. 2,000 jobs were lost. despite the low jobs numbers, the white house pointed out the unemployment rate dropped to 8.1%. it's the lowest rate since president obama took office. the president took that message to a suburban d.c. high school. >> now this morning, we learned that our economy created 130,000 private sector jobs in april. and the unemployment rate ticked down again. >> the rate did not drop because of more jobs. it fell because more americans stopped looking for work. gop presidential candidate, mitt romney, told a crowd at a pittsburgh cement company the president should stop blaming the 2008 recession for the

stagnant economy. >> anything over 8%. anything near 8%. anything over 4% is not cause for celebration. >> more than 12 million americans are unemployed. if those numbers don't improve by the november election, president obama may have a hard time keeping his job. president obama will officially launch his reelection campaign with the first lady this weekend in ohio and virginia. at the white house, danielle nottingham, derek, now back to you. >> thanks, daniel. >> new at 6:00, fairfax county police are trying to piece together exactly how a woman was killed after a possible traffic altercation today. a woman killed, ken is in alexandria with details on that. ken. >> reporter: yeah, here's what we know for certain. a 21-year-old woman is dead and police are on the lookout for the driver of a black chevy suv that had temporary tags. we understand that woman was found here on the street with severe injuries. she was taken to a nearby hospital where she later died.

police are not characterizing the motive of this debt at this point. they simply say they are looking at all kinds of possibilities, including this, perhaps being the result of road rage. investigators did say the victim was involved in an argument with another driver. however, they are not giving any con cluesives information as to what happened. they will know for certain when the investigation is complete. those near the scene earlier today describe what they saw as gruesome. >> going past, i saw a woman on the ground. there was blood everywhere. there was a guy kneeling by her. >> reporter: back out live here. police not identifying the woman. they are just saying she's a 21- year-old woman that lives somewhere in this area. if you know any information about this black suv that they are looking for, you are asked to call fairfax police.

9news now. >> that black suv with temporary tags. thank you. meanwhile, back to the political campaigns. republican mitt romney met with former rival, rick santorum, but did not get a public endorsement. romney said he wished an openly gay spokesman stayed on. richard grey kneel quit after concerned critics raised questions about his sexual orientation. end the week long diplomatic standoff over a chinese activist. the government says he may apply to go abroad to study. the agreement allows chin's wife and two children to leave so he can accept a fellowship that has been offered at a u.s. university. the state department says it will move quickly to provide visas. calling on president obama to ensure the safety of chen. >> we have an update on that deadly church shooting in howard county. it seems a man angry about being turned away from the church food bank motivated the

attack that took the life of a church secretary and has another woman fighting for her life tonight. scott broom has more from ellicott city. >> reporter: i'm scott broom in ellicott city. this afternoon, howard county police identified a homeless man, 56-year-old douglas franklin jones, as the shooter in a shocking murder suicide at the st. peter's episcopal church here. >> this man was living at a camp site in the woods behind the church and had been visiting the church on a regular basis to access their food bank. he recently apparently had become difficult and argumentative with the staff and they asked him to leave. we believe that he came back with a gun and shot these two women who were both employees of the church and working in the office at the time. >> they were identified today as church secretary, 59-year- old brenda brewington, mother of two, who died. the church's copastor, mary-

today for the first time in nearly two years. peterson is charged with the 2004 drowning death of his third wife. his fourth wife, stacey, disappeared in 2007. while peterson is a suspect in the case, he's not been charged. attorneys say they hope to begin jury selection for the trial within 60 to 90 days. a second week of testimony is wrapping up at the trial of former democratic presidential candidate, john edwards. he's accused of breaking campaign finance rules by using donations as hush money to cover up an extramarital affair. the court has been hearing a lot of testimony from brian huffman. he helped funnel some of that money from rachel bunny melon of northern virginia. mellon was one of edward's major benefactors. still ahead on 9news, he's back. michael phelps talking about another gold rush at the olympics. we'll hear from the pride of baltimore.

it again. two days ago, the alleged thieves e-mailed the georgetown voice and they attached this picture for proof. they called it a 15 hour operation and said be rest assured the clock itself was not damaged and the hands are on route to vatican city to receive the blessing. ps, the view from the top is truly phenomenal. but by thursday, the thieves had a change of heart. a ransom riddle appeared on the website, college craig. we'll give you a hand if you're willing to trade for a campus celebrity who recently made quite the buildup for just a little pup. that pup is jack jr., the university os mascot in training. the five month old bulldog was welcomed to campus just last month. now, it's him or the hands.

it remains unclear if the university will cave to the thieves demands. no one has returned my request for a comment. all they will say is that an investigation is on going. at georgetown university, i'm kristin fisher, 9news now. the university is calling this a serious offense. if caught, the thieves could face academic suspense and be expelled. >> a modern day gold rush is on in california. only it's meteorite particles. people are coming from all over the world to find what remains of a meteor looks like. a woman walking her dog found a piece of the space age rock that could be 4 to 6 billion years old, top? wow. it's worth up to $20,000. the couple thousand people descended to see if they can have similar luck. >> how do you pick it out from the other rock?

severe. now we'll back this out a little bit. we'll widen it out and show you where the storms are going to go in the next hour. essentially, you know, off to the east. so, essentially if you're in calvert county, extreme southern anne arundel county, you'll have a little bit of rain. even chowly towards lusby. that's god news. bad news is, i think there's potential for another round of showers and storms before midnight. here's the radar, they look intense on this radar, but this is not live. you see the lightning that rolled through. not as much lightning as we had last night with those storms, but still, lightning is a serious thing. 78 in bethesda. 75 in arlington. you go down to the south, springfield is 71. they had a shower and some clouds and looking at 82 in college park. they've been dry, and 78 in beltsville. temperatures still above average. so, the threat is until midnight. strong to severe thunderstorms tonight. hail and strong winds.
