created in april. this is not welcome news for college students. especially when interest rates for student loans were about to double. that's if congress fails to act soon. suray chin was in arlington. she joins us now. >> reporter: the president in arlington, virginia, talking with high school students as a looming deadline approaches. students cheer on the president as he arrived, but college bound students know there's not much celebrating when it comes to paying for college. >> honestly, it's going to be a very big burden. not to me, but i came here from uganda, i came here from nothing. >> urging congress to act by july 1 because that's when interest rates on federal subsidized loan will double to 7%. >> we have to make college more affordable. >> president obama is making his case on keeping the cost of education down as he appeals to some of the youngest voters in

the country. >> i am worried about debt, especially going into the navy and worrying how i'll pay for everything. >> brendan is virginia tech bound and one of four children, tom craig is helping put through college. >> a little bit stressed out in terms of how they will be able to afford college. >> participated in the round table discussion and introduced the president today. she says higher interest rates could mean she might not be able to afford college. >> if i don't get to go, then it's going to be a bummer for me and a disappointment to my family. >> and those worries and mounds of debt could delay college graduates from pumping money into the economy. >> because of the fact i'll be focused on the loans themselves, i won't be able to go towards my goals. i'll have to find a place to work, to pay off the loans. i won't think big. i have to think now instead of the future. >> students and their parents are hoping congress will act soon so they can concentrate on their dreams instead of their

debt. in arlington, 9news now. >> and jobs and perhaps the lack of them, the hot topic out on the campaign trail today as well and republican candidate, mitt romney, said the numbers are very disappointing. he says the growth should be triple the amount of the country to recover. >> the reason it dropped from 8.2 to 8.1 was not because we created a lot of jobs. as a matter of fact, only 115,000 jobs were created. that was well beneath what it was expected to be. it should have been in the hundreds of thousands, but it wasn't. the reason the rate came down was because 340,000 people dropped out of the work force. >> but not all of the experts agree on that. some economists believe the job market is going to improve and will be in a much better situation by election day. arlington county police say an officer who hit a dog last night was not speeding despite claims that he was from that dog's owner. the accident happened around

9:45 p.m. his yellow labrador darted out the screen door, ran into the street right into the path of that police cruiser. sebastian suffered gashes on the head. the speed limit on that street is just 25 miles an hour, but helen and the neighbors believe that officer was going a lot faster. >> how fast do you think the officer was going? >> 40 miles an hour, definitely fast. >> it sounded like a gun shot. >> a spokesman says the officer could not have been speeding since the dog's injuries are not that severe. now, an update on a murder suicide attack. police say it was a homeless man angry about being turned away from a church food bank who opened fire. that gunman and a church secretary both dead while the copastor in ellicott city is still fighting for her life tonight in the hospital. >> reporter: i'm scott broom

in ellicott city. police identified a homeless man, 56-year-old douglas flank lin jones, as the shooter in a shocking murder suicide at the st. peter's episcopal church. >> had been visiting the churning church on a regular basis to access their food bank. he had become difficult with the staff and they asked him to leave. we believe that he came back with a gun and shot these two women who were both employees of the church and working in the office at the time. >> they were identified today as church secretary, 59-year- old brenda brewington, mother of two, who died. the church's copastor, mary- marguerite kohn, unconscious and still in critical condition. >> a church? someone goes in a church and kills someone? that's hard to fathom. >> reporter: in ellicott city, scott broom, 9news now. he's one of the best

basketball players. the landover native rewrote the record books in college park and picked second overall by the boston celtics in the 1986 draft. but he never got to play in the garden. two days after the draft, he died. a cocaine overdose killed him. that tragedy shook d.c. and boston and changed the university of maryland for ever. but now, almost 26 years later, bias's sensational skills will be honored. tomorrow, he'll be inducted into the basketball hall of fame. so tonight, we still may wonder how to view lenny bias, a hero tragically fallen, or a cautionary tail, just say no? or maybe it's both. dave tries to answer that question in a new book. it's called born ready. the mixed legacy of len bias. thanks for coming in. >> pleasure to be here. >> which way do you see? tragic figure or cautionary tail? >> i called a book his legacy.

he caused a lot of problems for people who knew him, they were upset by his death. the university of maryland suffered through a tough time. a will the of people never used drugs because of the way len died. it was a traffic light that said, stay away from cocaine. >> he has no shrines, and yet, he is remembered as such a great player. it's kind of a contradiction. >> it is. maryland's only two-time acc player of the year and number of two pick in the 1986 nba draft. the celtics were excited. of course he never made it there. it affected the celtics as well for a good 15, 20 years. >> what made you get motivated? >> i'm a former maryland athlete. and i knew a lot of people in the athletic department who were affected by his death. some very personally. i have written three other books and now is the time to do it. i saw the documentary in late

2009. >> let's talk about some of the people hurt badly. not anyone more badly than the coach at the time. his career at maryland was completely ruined. >> well, one person who i think was affected more than lefty. lefty came back and coached and had a good college career. he didn't leave maryland the way he wanted to. the athletic director was a good friend of mine. he was a mentor of mine. dick had a very tough time for 10 to 12 years. he's interestingly working at hood college in frederick in the athletic department. he turned around , but it took a while. >> i think there should have been blame, but not to the extent they were blamed. len made a bad decision. it affected his friends and family and a will the of people personally. it was his decision and nobody's alone. maybe they could have watched over the drug use over the team and great, but you know, these are young adults.

>> i was interested in that. his mom wouldn't talk to you and apparently you say told others not to talk to you. you couldn't get anybody from the family to speak. how come? >> she asked them, it was up to them. she would prefer they wouldn't, but she would leave it up to them. i wasn't given a reason. >> how different is the university of maryland today because of what happened to len bias so long ago? >> i'll give you one element. when len was a basketball player at maryland, there were two or three employees who watched over academics. now the staff numbers more than a dozen. and that was the result that actually stood in front of other colleges, so len's death had a lot of positive results. >> dave, the book is called born ready. the mixed legacy of len. he gets recognition this weekend anyway in the metropolitan washington basketball hall of fame. thanks for coming in, we appreciate it. still to come, a twist in the theft of the clock hands off of georgetown's hall as a ransom note shows up online. but first, a virginia county's

father's former church. parishioners led them to the couple right here in alexandria. wink is hoping to fly them here tomorrow for a happy reunion. the thieves who recently stole the clock hands from a tower at georgetown university have issued a ransom note. it popped up on a website and says, we'll give you a hand if you're willing to trade for a campus celebrity who is recently made quite the buildup for just a little pup. that pup is jack, jr., the university's mascot in training. if they are caught, they could face academic probation or thrown out of school. we are still keeping an eye on those storms heading into our area. some could turn severe. top is in the weather center tracking them. >> we had one round this morning, another round this evening and now we have a third round developing to the north. let's take a look outside.

a respite, you can do some stuff, no storms for the next two or three hours and that's good news for the nats game. and temperatures are still pretty warm. after 84 for the high, 78 downtown. pressure falling now 29.88 inches of mercury and the winds out of the west at about 8. so, here's the deal. look at this lightning. this came into us this morning from the storms. upper marl boar refrom cindy. this is awesome. remember, that is five times hotter than the surface of the sun. when you hear thunder, you can be struck by lightning. this is the last round that rolled through. it really diminished in intensity. it was heavy as it crossed 95 and went into charles county and calvert county, died out. so nothing really to worry about now. however, let's move up to the north. these are monster storms now through pennsylvania and these are going to make their way down to the south tonight. we'll keep the chance of a shower or thunderstorm in, at least until midnight.

we'll reevaluate tonight at 11:00 just how far south these guys will get and how quickly they will move out. in the meantime, it's warm. 77 at be bethesda. it's 80 in college park. and 79 in great falls. a little cooler to the south. springfield, that's because they had a shower and thunderstorm earlier. the threat is until midnight at least. strong storms are possible. threats are still hail and winds. saturday looks okay. a couple showers possible. not enough to change your plans and very nice, very nice on sunday. of course, there's a lot to do this weekend. so for tonight, showers and storms possible until midnight. some could be heavy. some could be severe. low temperatures in the 60s. tomorrow morning, returning partly cloudy. there could be some clouds and early morning fog. 60s and 70s and by afternoon, keep the chance of a shower in, primarily south and west of town. if you are going to the apple blossom festival, even if you go to the plains, you'll have a

better chance of a shower, but not going ruin the day by any means. next seven days, we have the flower mart tomorrow. that should be fine if you're downtown. the grounds of the cathedral and on sunday, beautiful sunshine, 75. the festival run through sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and then nice on monday and more storms on tuesday, derek, and cooler on wednesday and 69 on thursday and low 70s on friday. >> very nice, topper. appreciate that. you know, in the weird news tonight, there are not many movie franchises that have their own special holiday. perhaps star wars is the only one. may 4, as in may the fourth be with you, get it? i didn't say it wasn't corny. the anchor team is celebrating international star wars day and taken over the newscast. take a look. scenes from star wars, very, very nice. there's a storm trooper and any number of other characters.
