hello, i'm bruce johnson. tonight we're getting conflicting views of a young gaithersburg man killed in a domestic dispute. some friends call matthew price a good guy, but public records show he was a registered sex offender. armando trull is trying to make sense of the story, including why price was shot and killed by his father. >> reporter: it's not clear if matthew price was naked when he left this apartment, but witnesses say that's how he was found just steps from his front door. montgomery county police say he was shot to death by his own father, a security guard. >> there was a whole bunch of chaos with the police and ambulance and firefighters. >> reporter: 23-year-old matthew eugene price was shot in the chest just before 9:00 p.m. on saturday. >> the body was found naked in the middle of the parking lot.

unfortunately, little kids found him. >> reporter: detectives say his father admitted to shooting his son during an argument. matthew price was a registered sex offender. he was convicted of forced sex in new jersey in 2009. >> we have little kids roaming around the whole neighborhood, every single complex, you know. it's filled with little kids. why would you allow somebody with that because ground? >> reporter: that background also shocked an old high school friend would was paying his respects at the spot where the 23-year-old lost his life. he asked us not to show his face or name. >> reporter: you've got tears in your eyes. did you love him? >> he was a real good friend. we had a respect, you know what i'm saying, admiration for each other. >> reporter: do you know how he was getting along with his dad?

>> i don't. from what i seen, he respected his rules. >> reporter: we're hearing that he might have had some problems as a registered sex offender. >> i didn't know nothing about that. >> reporter: police would not comment on price's status as a registered sex offender and would not say if this had anything to do with his homicide. armando trial, 9news now. >> that information was obtained from maryland's department of public safety and corrections. a pedestrian is struck near nationals park just before the start of the game between the nats and phillies. police say the female victim surd serious injuries. she was transported to a hospital. we're told the driver of the vehicle did remain at the scene. no word on whether any charges will be filed in this case. big news tonight from the redskins. coach mike shanahan today named rgiii the starting quarterback for the upcoming season. dave owens has the story from

death a homicide. >> our homicide detectives later got to the scene and were able to determine there is foul play involved. however we do not have an exact cause of death. >> investigators say the man was injured during some type of altercation. an autopsy is expected. stable workers say they did not know the victim. the search is on tonight for three suspects in an assault at university of maryland, college park. police say a man was assaulted by three other men who walked toward charles hall early this morning. it happened after the victim exchanged words with a group of some 15 people. the victim was treated for minor injuries, then released. a fatal hit-and-run in adelphi, maryland. it happened around 9:00 last night on university boulevard. 28-year-old samuel diaz was hit as he tried to cross the street. police say there was no

crosswalk. the hyattsville man died at a hospital. police are looking for the driver of a silver suv with front end damage. anybody with information should give police a call. parishioners are mourning the loss of their pastor, reverend mary marguerite kohn died after beg taken off a respirator. she is the second victim killed after a homeless gunman opened fire thursday before turning that gun on himself. he apparently became angry after being told to limit his visits to the church pantry. surae chinn reports. few it was extremely tough. >> reporter: parishioners describe an emotional service the likes of which st. peter's' episcopal church has never witnessed before. >> you can never take the spirit out of that church. >> reporter: the episcopal bishop eugene taylor sutton was brought in to lead the private service after thursday's shooting. he says the parrish is dealing

with a swirl of emotions after gunman douglas jones killed the church secretary, brenda brewington, and reverend mary marguerite kohn, affectionately known as mm. >> we remember their suffering. we blessed and hall he willed the places where they had been senselessly killed. >> they were in the act of giving. they were in all likelihood taking this man down to the soup pantry, and they lost their lives in the act of giving. >> reporter: the church says they told the gunman they could no longer provide food every day but just once a weak because there were so many families in need. they say the church's long tradition of providing for the poor will not end because of this tragedy. >> we will not help the poor and needy from behind bulletproof glass. our mission goes on. >> reporter: the reverend kohn's last wish was to donate her organs. even in death, the beloved priest will continue to give

life. >> funeral services for reverend kohn will be held tuesday at the cathedral of incarnation. meanwhile brenda brewing ton's funeral will be held in ellicott city thursday. president barack obama made a call today to congratulate france's new president-elect. the white house said the president told him he looked forward to working with him. he defeated incumbent nicholas sarkozy. greek voters voted mostly for two parties that want change regarding the financial bailout. still ahead on 9news now this sunday night, one of the largest fund-raisers in the country in the fate against brain cancer. >> money is always necessary, but brain cancer is tough to

in philadelphia a trial gets underway in federal court tomorrow over a liability in a

duck boat crash that left two hungarian students dead. the families of the 16 and 20- year-olds have flown in for the trial. the students drowned almost two years ago when a tugboat guided a barge into an amphibious passenger boat on the delaware river. the parents have filed suit against the owners of all three vessels. the families say you can't put a price on their loss. >> we don't really have any more holidays. we don't have any christmas. we don't have anything any more. we feel that the corporations are at fault, and that there have -- they have never apologized. >> federal safety investigators determined that the tugboat captain had been talking on his cell phone at the time of the crash. that captain is now sync year and a dayne prison. the blind chinese activist remains in a beijing hospital tonight.

he tells the washington post by telephone that he has not been able to talk to american diplomats since friday. journalists have been barred from his hospital room. secretary of state hillary clinton was in china last week and said an agreement had been reached to allow cheng and his family to come to the u.s. this reporter just returned from china last week. i was there because of a book i wrote about my personal journey with heart disease that's been translated and published in china. it took 10 visits before i was given a visa. i had to first convince the communist government that i was only going for book signings and sight seeing. this is what i saw once i got to beijing. china is a country of contradictions. old versus new. my first indull i believe

impression is the number of people in china. there are lots of people. this is the famed garden district in shanghai, a city of more than 20 million. >> hello, people from america, washington, d.c. welcome to china. >> goods and services are plenty. i found a lot of chinese in the big city are content with their improved lives. the government is paying for homes that are being torn down as part of the speedy modernization. china's growth falled by cheap labor hasn't yet run its course as predict. when that happens rising consumption here could toss in the blow. beijing is a smaller city, a mere 15 million people. but this is the capital, the center of government and culture in china. it's a crowded capital with lots of cars and suv's having replaced bikes as the preferred mode of transportation.

their government. any criticism of the party could bring consequences for them and their families. >> you don't make a deal about the one-party system, you don't make a deal about taiwan. >> jeff andrews is the american director of the international school in beijing. he's also a former associate of former d.c. mayor adrian fenty. he has lived in china for 10 months. >> i don't think there are any listening devices in my house, in my car. >> i saw firsthand that the one- party rule often gets things done in record speed. most of these office buildings and condos have been pilot in the past two 1/2 decades. highways and 14-lane boulevards have replaced dirt roads. while democrats debate in the u.s. universal healthcare, it's already here. i got the chance to visit a hospital, specifically a

today's cloudy skies didn't dim the hopes of thousands of runners for the 15th annual race for hope. proceeds from the 5k trek goes to the research in the fight against brain cancer. >> today's race was fantastic. it's always touching to see some people that are still getting sicker but others that are doing well. it makes you inspired. >> the race for hope has raised more than $15 million in its history. a lot of money for a good cause. >> sure is. >> what do you got coming up for us? >> we may see a little more sunshine. >> okay. >> temperatures not as warm. also, we've noticed the humidity go down a little bit. that trend will continue through tomorrow, and it looks like we have a pretty nice day in store to start the work

week. here's a look at our michael & son weather camera. temperatures are around 60, 63 downtown, mostly cloudy, winders east-southeast at 10. dew point still in the mid-50s. right now most of us are in the 60s. 65 down south into fredericksburg. 61 in gaithersburg, 64 in winchester, 62 for annapolis, 59 for oakland. we'll continue to fall into the 50s overnight. the satellite and radar picture showing us cloudy skies for tonight. starting for your monday as well, maybe a little drizzle with that marine layer still in place. so drizzle or some areas of fog possible for that morning commute. otherwise, a mixture of some sun and some clouds for monday afternoon. unsettled and warmer for your tuesday and wednesday also we could see a few more showers linger before we see even cooler conditions come this way. so, overnight mostly cloudy with patchy fog and drizzle.
