we begin with breaking news about a verdict in the trial surrounding the south capital street shootings. most people cannot forget the scene, it was december 2010.

five people were killed, over a stolen fake diamond bracelet. nine others were injured over eight days of violence. well jurors got the case last wednesday, five men were charged. we will give you the verdict as soon as it is announced. our bruce johnson is at dc superior court and will have details, coming up, as we said as soon as we get the word on 9news now, beginning at 5:00 p.m. thanks so much for joining us, i'm j.c. hayward. a school bus crash this morning has left 12 students injured, and the van driver in critical condition. it happened in the 8300 block of 83 highway in maryland. it occurred just after 8:00 this morning. the school bus was heading to drop off youngsters at oxford middle school when it collided with a southern maryland cable

work van. a company representative says the van driver has an excellent driving record. sources say he suffered head injuries, and he was coughing up blood. >> the work van was traveling north on 83 highway. the school bus appeared to be trying to get on to indian head highway. for some reason the work van struck the bus at the rear, lost control and ran right into a tree. >> the van driver was airlifted to med star, again he is in critical condition, 12 students, along with a bus driver, suffered minor injuries. a young girl was rushed to the hospital this morning after she was shot in the leg. this happened at 3:30 a.m. at york avenue and fen wood street

northeast. the girl was in a car and was struck by a stray bullet. she is expected to be okay. police have not made an arrest in that case. an american, taken hostage by al qaeda, is asking president obama for help. new video shows a message, and it is about a terrorist organization. randall pinkston has more information from the white house. >> the al qaeda video shows american, warren weinstein, pleading for his life. >> my life is in your hands, mr. president. if you accept the demand, i live. if you don't accept the demands, then i die. >> reporter: this is the first time weinstein has been seen since he was abducted from his home in pakistan last august. the 70-year-old was working for an american firm in that country. weinstein will be freed if the

u.s. stops air strikes in pakistan, afghanistan, somalia and yemen and releases all the al qaeda suspects. the white house is not commenting on the video, it is posted online. a drone missile called the fbi's most wanted person for his role in the bombing of the uss cole. five men accused of plotting the 9/11 attacks, including the mastermind, khalid sheik mohammed, were arraigned in a gaunt courtroom this morning. al qaeda wants the terror suspects freed. >> if you respond to them, then i will live. >> reporter: in the video, weinstein claims he is being taken care of, but says he will die if al qaeda's demands are not met.

randall pinkston, cbs news, the white house. >> weinstein has a heart problem. in the video, however, he claims to be getting all of his medications. today a student is taking a high school to court over the school's display of the ten commandments, it is at narrow high school in giles county, virginia. the student says by putting up the 10 commandments the school is violating the first amendment protection against government endorsement of religion. the school board however says the 10 commandments display is part of a larger presentation that includes other historical documents. parishioners at st. peter's spent this weekend healing from a tragedy. the reverend mary margarite cole died after being taken off a respirator. she was one of two people killed when a homeless gunman opened fire before turning the gun on himself. brenda brewington, the church's

secretary, was also killed. and the reverend eugene taylor sutton presided over yesterday's emotional service. >> we remember their suffering. we blessed and hallowed the places where they had been senselessly killed. police suspect the gunman, 66-year-old douglas jones, became angry after the victims asked him to limit his visits to the food pantry. voters in north carolina, indiana and west virginia will be going to the polls tomorrow. they will have an opportunity to choose between mitt romney and rope paul. susan mcginniss has more now from capitol hill. >> reporter: mitt romney appeared unconcerned about tomorrow's primary election as he watched his hometown boston celtics in the nba playoffs.

the 107 delegates at stake still are not enough to help romney clinch the nomination, but he is the likely nominee and president obama is already taking aim at his eventual opponents. the president tried to portray romney as out of touch with average americans, holding his first campaign rally this weekend in ohio and virginia. >> why else would he want to spend trillions more on tax cuts for wealthy americans. >> reporter: as the two candidates focus on each other, most political observers here in washington are focused on who romney will choose to be his running mate. senator marco rubio is still trying to deflect the question. > >> another potential choice, new hampshire center kelly a on the was more willing to address it.

metal building referred to as a quonset hut. >> the old building to me was like a trailer. >> reporter: finally, a few weeks ago, the move began out of the w street health clinic to the 46,000 square feet unity health center. the before and after images are striking, to say the least. >> it is a lot easier to trust a beautiful facility than somewhere, where you feel like you have been tossed. it is a tough economy. people who always worked and maybe went to different healthcare, they see this, this is all i get? >> sharon bass kerrville says healthcare in poor communities has barely scratched the surface. >> people didn't have the opportunity to go to the doctor. so people were grateful to have a quonset hut. that is the sad thing i call the ghettoization of healthcare. >> the new center was built in

doing all right this afternoon too. temperatures in a comfortable range in the low, maybe mid 70s, if we can okay out enough sunshine. temperatures that we are showing you here, upper 60s next hour, low 70s with the peeks of sunshine. one thing you are going to notice also wind picking up out of the southeast at 10 to 15. finishing the day with a little more sunshine by 7:58 and by 9:00, 64. you can see the clouds here. the sun is out there on the eastern shore. over us, we have had a lot of clouds, especially off to our west and north. where the sun is out, we have temperatures in easton, cumberland is 72. we are holding onto the mid-60s generally across many of the areas right now 65 in sterling.

leesburg is 64, college park 67 degrees and columbia at 65. a decent day. mostly cloudy still, that is keeping the temperatures from getting too warm. 66 at reagan national. cloudy skies, winds south at 9. the barometer is rising at 30. 11. nationally west coast all quiet. had some snow in the rockies this morning, anywhere from three to five inches outside of denver. you are looking at storms now across areas coming into northern mississippi through arkansas and then coming up the mississippi valley. look at this, cleveland had bigger thunderstorms this morning. this is moving off toward the east. this is going to stay north of us, but this part of it in the back here, over toward indiana, that is a front that is going to be coming through here as we head into late tomorrow, wednesday. going to give us much better rain chances. today partly sunny to mostly cloudy. generally dry, there could be

today i am one-on-one with cindy glass. and a personal tragedy inspired her. she is a mother, to organize a race in honor of her son, in order to save lives. and the race is called jeremy's run. it is going to be held monday, may 28th, memorial day, at the fair hill shopping center in ole any, maryland. a 5 k, 10-k, and one mile race. if you participate, all of the proceeds will help a partnership for a drug free america. i want to get that information in, because it's very important. >> we have two other beneficiaries as well. one is the cole mack foundation and the other is the family support center. they have a program called dying to get high, which is going into the public schools in montgomery county in the fall. >> so you can participate in a 5 k, 10-k or one mile run or walk. but now, i would like to talk a

little bit to remember your son. jeremy was an incredible young man. tell me a little bit about him. >> well he was. he was an awesome kid. at 15 he had a football injury, which required three surgeries. this is where we started to have problems, where he was introduced on oxycodone. >> pain drugs? >> yeah, it is percocet. he really liked it. and he started to get very involved in that and marijuana. we sent him away a number of times to try to help him with this problem, but ultimately, it took his life. >> he was at the age of 20? he eventually got into heroin, he had gone through treatment programs, but he just couldn't turn it loose? >> no. and it is a really horrible thing that is happening with the, like oxycodone, oxycontin,
