march 22, 2010, when jordan howell, 20, was slam was slain, after a bracelet went missing. >> cannot undue the loss of the children. but what it did do, it assured the justice system works. >> reporter: carter, his brother, and the others rented a van, armed themselves, and headed to south capital. that shooting left three people killed, six others wounded. and was the culmination of a series of shootings over eight days that left 14 people shot. >> reporter: three people were killed on south capital who had gone to jordan howell's funeral. >> these people will not be able to kill anyone again. >> reporter: one more, tavon nelson was shot in a separate incident because the defendants

wanted his gun to use on others. we should also point out that nathaniel sims was one of the original defendants. he cut a deal with prosecutors. he's going to plead guilty. he's going to look at a lengthy sentence also. for five days on the witness stand, he layed out how they carried out these shootings, including how he himself pointed that ak47 into the crowd. coming up at 6:00, you're going to hear from some of the jurors. we have their voices. there was some problem in the jury room before they came into the courtroom with their verdicts. >> bruce johnson, thank you. there were some stern reactions today from u.s. officials to the release of a video of a rockville resident. the 17-year-old -- 70-year-old aid consultant was kidnapped and now he's in the hands of al- qaeda terrorists. more on the tape and the reactions to it. scott. >> reporter: let's start with

weinstein's family who has not heard with him since the nine months since he was kidnapped in pakistan. a yellow ribbon do the talking for them, preferring to maintain a disciplined public silence during this hostage ordeal. >> my life is in your hands, mr. president. >> reporter: the first words of weinstein are about his wife and two daughters here in maryland. >> my wife is elaine and i'd like her to know that i'm fine, i'm well, i'm getting all my medications and being taken care of. >> reporter: al-qaeda is demanding all the release of prisoners, all prisoners at guantanamo, and the release of all relatives of osama bin laden. and the tape was released just hours after a drone strike killed a top al-qaeda leader in yemen. it comes as 9/11 suspects begin a trial at guantanamo. u.s. officials reacted firmly to the tape. >> the u.s. government will

tucker county, and that area just south of the maryland panhandle. lightning as well. they might clip garrett county in the next couple of hours. but as far as we're concerned, if you are east of i-81, you are fine. temperatures, we got this southeast wind keeping it cooler than average, but not bad. some 60s in gaithersburg. so for tonight, we'll keep it mostly cloudy, breezy and mild. some mountain showers and lows 54 to 62. perfect sleeping weather. no ac and no heat. that's kind of nice. we'll talk about how our chances for showers and storms will increase, what that means to not one, but both your commutes tomorrow. thank you topper. a bus, a school bus collided with a minivan today in prince georges county. that bus was carrying classmates to oxen hill middle school this morning before the collision in the 8300 block of indian head highway.

12 students were taken from that accident scene in fort washington with their injuries described as minor. the driver of the minivan was transported in critical condition. the week got off -- ground floor -- this was the scene around 1:00 this morning along good luck road near route 193. yup, that's a car and half of it is inside the apartment. fortunately, nobody was hurt. so far, prince georges county police have not charged that driver. >> two western maryland teens were killed this weekend driving home from their senior prom. and police say there's no sign of drugs or alcohol, just speed and a dark country road. dead are two standout sports stars near hagerstown. samantha kelly and brendan colliflower. >> it's very hard. it's been a trying year.

>> reporter: shattered car parts litter the ground and friends keep adding to the memorial. brendan's batting gloves, his sunglasses, volleyballs. >> it's hard. >> the couple had left the prom down in shepherd'stown. sam wanted to change. there's a bit of a rise here, then a sharp turn. the car left the road here, skidded along the embankment and then slammed into the tree. >> i heard that they had a bet with another couple that they would get to the house faster than them. i'm not sure if that's true, but i think people are going to take driving more seriously now. >> reporter: police say colliflower was speeding in his honda s2000 sports car. they have yet to release an estimate of how fast he was going. >> i want to let you know that brendan was a great guy and sam was a great girl >> reporter: the all county pitcher of the year, kelly was

landed for the first time in our area. then made the short flight to reagan national airport where reporters and photographers were given a tour of the state of the art jumbo jet. look at those wings. kristin fisher was one of them and she joins us with what she saw inside. hey kristen. >> reporter: hey guys. this thing is really neat. it's being called the next big thing in aviation. it's a big deal for both the airline industry and for just the average passengers. for the airlines, this airplane is much more fuel efficient, which means it's going to save them a lot of money. but for you and me, this is all about making air travel more comfortable. lower cabin pressure, higher humidity, and an led light display that can simulate a sunrise. it's all used to minimize jet lag. something passengers will need because this jumbo jet was built to go far with less fuel. >> this is an airplane that is the first new airplane of the

21st century. i say that because this is the first airplane that really uses the technologies that are available to us today. >> when you walk on board, you instantly notice the higher ceilings and bigger windows. nearly twice as large as the windows on most commercial aircraft and that's not all. the windows dim electronically. a minute and a half to go from full light to full dark and longer to go back. and if you follow down to these windows, you'll see the 25, 50, 75, and 100% dark right here. >> as neat as it looked, the jet's best feature is that it creates tens and thousands of jobs right here in the u.s. >> the 787 represents the best meaning of the term, made in america by american workers. >> reporter: he calls it america's next big export. more than 850 have already been ordered by airlines all over the world. including american and united. boeing's ceo predicts the 787

stocks here in the u.s. are not selling off as feared amid new concern over europe's debt crisis. the dow finished the day down 29 points at 13,008.

those elections in europe jolted world markets today. asian indexes fell more than 2% after voters in france and greece rejected tough austerity measures put in place because of the european economic crisis. greece parliament split leaving that country in an economic crisis. and the new socialist president of france says he does not plan to back those austerity plans either. >> basically saying we are not going to embrace austerity economics. that is cutting budget deficits, cutting safety nets. >> france's new leader will face stiff resistance. she says other european leaders are not ready to negotiate and analysts expect the markets will continue to fluxuate. a fight involving student loans is expected to move to the senate floor. how to keep student loan interest rates from doubling on

july 1. the $6 billion in lost rev news would come from raising payroll taxes on some small businesses. another plan would freeze interest rates on subsidized loans at about 3 1/2% for another year. the deal is expected before the deadline. there is a man hunt underway for a mississippi man accused of abducting a mother from tennessee and her three daughters. >> the suspect has been a close family friend for years and he's now linked to two suspicious deaths. allison harmon breaks it down for us. >> police are searching for this man, 35-year-old adam mays as they investigate the disappearance of joann bane and her three daughters. they were last seen in tennessee, which police searched again on sunday. haze was a family friend who described to be like an uncle to the girls. late last week, police found the bodies of two unidentified people inside a home near

guntown, mississippi, that's linked to maze. investigators will not say if the bodies were children. neighbors are praying for the victims and urging maze to come forward. >> let us know where that mom is. >> reporter: police say joann bane's husband was getting ready to move the family to arizona when they all disappeared. authorities are trying to determine if joann went willingly. they warn that the suspect is armed and extremely dangerous. >> this is a pretty quiet community. nothing serious has ever happened around here. it's pretty rough situation. >> investigators say maize may have changed his appearance or even cut and died the girls hair to disguise their identities. there's a $50,000 reward for any information that leads to the bane family and may's arrest. allison for cbs news. >> he was last seen in mississippi, but he has ties to arizona, texas, the carolinas

and florida. lightning sparked a dangerous fire in minneapolis. three cars in fact burst into flames yesterday when lightning hit a power line and it fell on top of them. these flames were so powerful, they actually burned through the asphalt hitting a gas line below, which didn't help the fire situation. utility crews had to be called in to dig up the street and secure that area. >> rescuers used dynamite to help reach people in china. the blast cleared a path and that allowed hundreds of stranded tourists and their vehicles to get out of there. they were trapped for several days. soldiers were also called in to help with that evacuation and everybody made it out okay. and we have some dramatic video from a suspected tornado in japan. now this violent weather badly damaged more than 100 homes and actually killed a 14-year-old boy. 40 others were injured in the storm, which struck about 40 miles north of tokyo. the suspected twister, also knocked out power to more than

1600 homes and guys, these pictures are pretty amazing. >> yeah, they are. you have some video, topper, of other severe weather. >> some of those buildings are in japan were stoned and concrete. and this is the wall cloud in a place called pleasant hill, missouri, and oftentimes tornadoes can drop down from a wall cloud. remember that tornadoes are just violently rotating columns of air. the whole thunderstorm rotates a little bit. you can see a funnel dropping down a little bit. and we're looking at showers and thunderstorms in the plain states, the ohio valley. most of which stay north of us for a while, but we become unsettled as well. we will look at radar and slight combined and we are looking at showers as we mentioned earlier. out to the west in the mountains. out toward garrett county and west virginia, tucker county, and the valley. everything will stay west of i- 81 tonight. so yes, we have a lot of clouds, that marine layer, that

diamond pet food is expanding a recall to get tainted dog food off the market. the company found salmonella and wants dog owners to stop using diamond puppy formula dry food. it was sold in 6-ounce samples. pets with salmonella infections can infect pets and humans causing gastro intestinal symptoms and that food can make people sick from handling it. 14 people across the country have gotten sick from handling that pet food, including one person in virginia. for more on the best buy dates and production codes, go to our website, wusa9.com. a civil trial opened today involving that deadly duck boat

slash. two hung gain hungarian students were killed. the key question today is whether there should be a limit on how much the two vessel operators will have to pay. they want the liability limited to $2 million. good times and some golf in gainesville. the club hosted a charity tournament today that included wounded warriors from walter reid army medical center. the event benefited thanks u.s.a. a nonpartisan organization providing scholarships for american servicemen and women and their families. a new park opening soon in urbana will be more than a place of recreation. also be a memorial to fallen service members. the frederick news reports that local resident, jonathan sanderson raised $12,000 for the tribute to captain john denison. the 24-year-old was killed in iraq in 2006.

right now, police continue to search for the hit-and-run driver who killed a young virginia woman. tonight that woman's mother is begging the driver to come forward. >> the crash happened late friday morning on harrison lane in the alexandria section of fairfax county and tonight, peggy fox is back out at that scene where the police are desperately hoping more witnesses will step forward. >> this is a busy two-lane road where she was killed friday morning. you can still see the investigators on harrison lane. she made two mistakes. one she pulled out into traffic right in front of two cars. they all came to a stop and then the second mistake, which proved to be fatal, she got out of her car.

protect chen. he is still in a chinese hospital tonight recovering from foot injuries he suffered during his escape. he wants to come to the united states. bruce johnson just returned from china last week. he was there because of a book he wrote about a personal journey of heart disease. now bruce was given a visa to travel there. but it didn't come easily. it took letters from the book publisher in china explaning why bruce was invited and ten separate visits to the visa office. this is what he saw and experienced in beijing and shanghai. >> are you kidding me? >> a new before i made the 13 1/2 flight from dulles airport, that the great wall of china would be the highlight of my trip. >> i can't talk and climb the steps, too. >> built the protect the kingdom, the wall attracts many chinese and outsiders every year. it's one of the seven wonders

caught on tape, a high speed police chase from a car other than a police cruiser. it happened this weekend in

seattle. a man trying to elude police hit a bus and a car downtown. the vehicle that was hit captured the collision on its dash cam. you can see smoke from the crash coming from the radiator right there as it happens. now to a man's brush with death on a russian highway. >> and we want to warn you. these next couple pieces of video are graphic, however, both crash victims survived. investigators say a driver made the emergency stop over the weekend, but failed to put up any flairs or warning signs and that can be what happens. yeah, he was hit by a car flung up in the air. amazingly, just a broken leg. >> i don't think i have seen anything like that. >> that's new. now to the other disturbing crash caught on tape. this one happened during a protest late last week at the university of texas in austin. a man wearing a president obama mask waving a sword as you see, suddenly gets hit by a bus in the middle of the street. believe it or not, his injuries

loss. in tonight's health alert, morbid obesity is growing among people in the u.s. according to the centres for disease control. the cdc's weight of the nation report reveals a snapshot of america's obesity epidemic which is starting to show down, which is not a pretty picture. >> i was one of the lead authors on a study that is forecasting obesity rates to 2030. >> the weight of the nation conference going on here in the district. the forecasting study found 42% could be obese by the year 2030. 42%. individuals with severe obesity may rise to 11%. the healthcare system could see 32 million more obese people in the next two decades. it is a number that could significantly hike healthcare costs. >> in terms of dollar value, that would account for over $500 billion over the next 20 years.

>> however, the good news is the growth rate of overall obesity seems to be slowing down. >> those dramatic increases are going to continue for the severe obese, but the overall obesity prevalence rates are starting to slow. >> what i have seen is a more diverse group who are coming. they realize it's not just a matter of weight. it's their blood sugar. their cholesterol. >> dr. denise says people are more aware of the consequences of obesity and its leading to the slowdown of overall obesity growth. she warns even with that positive trend, we as a nation have a very long way to go. >> that's what we try to be, is proactive as opposed to reactive. because if we just approach this epidemic in a reactive stage, by 2080, 90% of americans will be obese. >> let's hope not. okay, you heard the doctor.
