osama bin laden. we also know the bomb is now in the possession of the fbi for a technical analysis. details of how this went down are not known, either is the fate of the suicide bomber. there are some scary developments here. this bomb was a much more sophisticated version of the 2009 version. it did not contain any metal which presumably means it was not detected. when operatives stepped in, the bomber had not picked a u.s. flight or purchased ticket. that adds up to a big win for u.s. intelligence. it's interesting to note after the hold on this news for more than a week, it's now breaking just a day after a drone strike in yemen killed al-qaeda's top operative. we don't know if these events are tied together, but it's clear that al-qaeda and yemen is very active and clearly still very dangerous to the u.s. we're continuing to follow developments. for now, i'm scott broom. >> constant vigilance is

needed. al-qaeda released a video from a plea from a local man kidnapped in pakistan nine months ago. >> my life is in your hands, mr. president. if you accept the demands, i live. if you don't accept the demands, then i die. >> warren weinstein is from rockville and worked for an arlington based company. it is concerned for the 70-year- old's well being, but the government does not negotiate with terrorists. the five men accused of plotting to blow up a bridge near cleveland say they're not guilty. they were in a court today for a preliminary hearing. the government calls the suspects self-described anarchists and they were arrested as part of an fbi sting. one defense attorney says it's a simple case of entrapment. d.c. is looking for artists to help design a memorial to the victims of the deadly crash along metro's red line. nine people died when two trains collided back in june of 2009. the families of some of the victims have been calling for a

memorial ever since the crash happened. so far, just a plaque that has been dedicated at the metro station. two teens are dead after speeding home from their prom on saturday night. it happened in hagerstown just south of interstate 70. >> i'm bruce leshan in will yams williams port, maryland, trying to understand the deaths of brendan colliflower and samantha kelly. teenagers that ran into a tree driving home from their high school prom. >> it's very hard. it has been a trying year. >> reporter: shattered car parts litter the ground and friends keep adding to the memorial. brendan's batting gloves, his sunglasses, volleyballs for sam. >> it's hard to come here. >> i heard they had a bet with another group, or couple that they would get to the house faster than them. >> reporter: police say

colliflower was speeding in his honda s2000 sports car. they have yet to release an estimate of how fast he was going. on this monday after the crash, one teacher broke down crying in front of her class. and students tried and failed to make some sense of this. >> today we should be looking back at prom and talking about the parties and the pictures and not having to remember two people that just passed away. >> reporter: in williams port, maryland, 9news now. results are in from the autopsy on a body found in a barn at churchill downs just hours after the kentucky derby, but tonight, the coroner isn't saying much other than her investigation did reveal injuries to the body. 48-year-old aiden perez's body was found early sunday morning. investigators say they do not believe his death had anything to do with the race. they say he may have died after a fight. >> after two weeks of deliberations, jurors handed down a series of guilty

this is bruce johnson reporting from superior courthouse for 9news now. >> new at 6:00, the d.c. government agreed to pay $20,000 to four people who challenge their drunk driving convictions. all four were part of a group that said their convictions were based on inaccurate breath testing equipment. the police department failed to calibrate the devices and prosecutors relied on that information even after knowing the machines were flawed. back on the witness stand today, a campaign consultant to suppress black voter turnout in the 2010 election for maryland governor. talking about joule i julius henson. he lost that election. now henn sen says the calls were not meant to suppress the vote. and now to the trial of john edwards, the former democratic presidential candidate. he is accused of using campaign money as hush money to hide an extramarital affair. today, testimony about a check for edwards for $175,000 from a

major benefactor from northern virginia, her name, rachel bunny mellon. some of that cash was used as hush money, but mellon said the money was a gift for edwards, not a campaign contribution. >> and here in washington, d.c., federal agent, jeff testified for a third day at the trial of former major league pitcher, roger clemens. clemens is accused of lying to congress in '08 when he denied using performance enhancing drugs. today, he testified that clemens was not even a target when he initially began questioning clemens former trainer about the steroid. he is expected to testify later in the week. and coming up tonight at 7:00 on 9news now, suspended over a song? a six-year-old is sent home after he sang a popular song in the lunch line. now his school claims that song led to sexual harassment.

anny hong is live. any sign of the prince so far? >> reporter: oh, we're so close. in fact, he is actually, his motorcade is just pulling up. we heard the sirens and saw the lights and you can see there are quite a few fans here of the royal family waiting to greet him here at the ritz carlton. he is here to accept the humanitarian leadership award from the council at tonight's award center. the prince is accepting the reward on behalf of his brother, prince william, for their work with wounded warriors. this is his motorcade. i believe he may be in one of these cars here and they will probably come out any moment. now earlier today, harry did visit with a british and american wounded veteran at the british ambassador's residence. and the foundation of prince william and prince harry focuses on helping wounded servicemen and women transition back into civilian life.

and there he is right there. he's greeting folks with the atlantic council and sharing some words. hey he is dressed up in his tuxedo. treesed great for tonight's big awards ceremony. harry is also training as a military pilot. he and his brother have been very active and involved in helping veterans transition back into civilian life. the media here is trying to get him to talk to us, but it looks like he's going to go straight into the nearby gallery. the fans and i are starting to get excited and starting to scream. now harry again is receiving the award for distinguished humanitarian leadership. now the d.c. based -- atlantic council is giving out rewards every year, but this one in particular is special. it has only been given out once
