reporting that it knew about the plot last week, but did not immediately publish the information at the request of the white house and the cia. all this comes the same day as al-qaeda released a video of a rockville man kidnapped in pakistan last august. and in that video, weinstein is pleading with president obama to accept his captor's demand or he'll be killed. the state department says it's working on getting him released, but the white house says the united states does not negotiate with terrorists. >> the u.s. government will continue making every effort to see mr. weinstein released safely to his family, but we can -- >> weinstein was kidnapped from a compound in pakistan. he had been living there for the past five years, working for a virginia based company that helps pakistani businesses get started. weinstein was a week away from coming home when he was abducted. guilty, that was the verdict handed out by the jury on most of the counts against the five men accused in the

deadly 2010 shooting spree in d.c. the drive by shootings that culminated in march two years ago killed four people and wounded six others. our bruce johnson was in the courtroom for today's verdicts. >> the families are still grieving, but relieved the jurors strained by the 2 1/2 month trial. it was the worst mass shooting in d.c. history with most of the casualties coming in the 4,000 block of south capital street. >> this boom, boom, bang, bang, pow, pow, nonstop bullets. >> a total of five young people have been killed. nine young people have been wounded. >> from the night this happened, it's one of the worse things i have seen in 22 years. >> 16-year-old girl that was shot in the back of the head with an ak47. >> today, families of the victims got their justice. >> it is evil, evil. i can't call them animals because animals don't kill for fun and sport.

people killed, six others wounded and was the culmination of a series of shootings over eight days that left 14 people shot. >> three people were killed on south capital, including jones and others who had gone to jordan howell's funeral. >> these people will not be able to kill nobody's children again. >> one of the original defendants in this case, 28- year-old na nathaniel sims agreed to testify for the government. this is bruce johnson reporting from the superior courthouse for 9news now. now to the latest on a car crash that killed two high school seniors on prom night. police say no sign of drugs or alcohol. just a car going too fast on a dark country road. samantha kelly and brendan colliflower died when their car left the road and slammed into a tree on wrench road. that's near hagerstown. the couple was on their way back from the prom. he was speeding in his honda s2000 sports car.

>> i heard they had a bet with another couple that they would get to the house faster than them. i think people are going to take driving more seriously now. >> as they should. both kelly and colliflower were on the honor roll. he is waiting for news on funeral arrangements. tomorrow, voters in north carolina will cast their votes on a constitutional amendment that would legally define marriage. it's called the marriage amendment act. recent poll numbers show the measure will likely pass. critics argue it would affect more than just same sex marriage. they claim the amendment would invalidate all civil unions and domestic partnerships. >> this is bad law, because it will hurt even heterosexuals because it does not recognize any other domestic union. >> supporters say it protects

the institution of marriage. they want a constitutional amendment so the judges cannot overturn it. and as north carolina gets ready to vote on banning same sex marriage, another member of president obama came out in support of same sex marriage. this time, it was secretary of education, arnie duncan. he said he unequivocally supports same sex marriage. that's in addition to joe biden, who suggested yesterday that he supports it as well. so far, the president has not publicly backed the unions and the white house was sticking with that story. >> same sex couples as the president, the vice president said, being entitled to the same rights and civil rights and civil liberties as other americans. that's why he has fought for those equal rights and why he has efforts to dediscriminate against citizens. >> president obama said in the past that his views on the issue are evolving. drivers in virginia will not get to talk face to face

about the proposed easy pass transponder fee. a spokeswoman says the agency isn't going to hold any public hearings on the issue because state law doesn't say they have to. vdot is proposing a $1 per month fee for drivers to have that transponder in their cars and if approved, users would have to start paying the fee as of july 1. the transit agency does say drivers can weigh in by going to the website. meantime, drivers coming back from dulles airport might want to pack some patience and maybe some extra change. that's because at 9:00 p.m., vdot is closing down the eastbound lane of the dulles airport access road from centerville road to leesburg pike. all that traffic will then have to shift on to the dulles toll road and they'll have to go through the main toll plaza and pay the toll even if they are coming from the airport, which would usually be free. the eastbound lanes of the access highway will reopen by 5:00 a.m. it looks like the gloominess that we had over the weekend decided to stick around
