advanced version of the underwear bomb deployed on a detroit-bound jet back in 2009. the cia foiled this latest attempt. susan mcginnis is in washington with the latest. good morning, susan. >> good morning, danielle. that's right. the fbi stepped in and seized this device before the suicide bomber was able to find a target. now the fbi is looking at this device to try to figure out if it could have made it through airport scanners and if it could have brought down an airliner. federal officials are trying to see if it could take down a jet line sneer they keep trying to find more and more terrible and preverse ways to kill people. >> a yemen-based terror group planned the attack. >> you have this group in yemen that is proving to be very

dangerous and has tried to hit the united states multiple times. >> officials say this man is the mastermind behind the bomb. he is best known for creating the underwear bomb that failed to detonate in the skies over detroit on christmas day 2009. he also reportedly built bombs which were hidden inside toner cart trijs and shipped as cargo to the u.s. in october of 2010. president obama was made aware of the threat last month. u.s. government officials insist the public was never in danger. still the secretary of defense says the u.s. will do whatever it takes to thwart these attacks. >> what this incident makes clear is that this country has to continue to remain vigilant. >> still the bomb reportedly had no metal parts, meaning it is less likely it would have been discovered by most airport security measures. >> this bomb maker is doing everything possible to create devices that evade existing and known security protocol.

>> a senior official with the department of homeland security tells cbs news this bomb plot will not lead to a noticeable change in how the tsa conducts passenger security checks. now, this operation unfolded as the white house and homeland security were making statements to the public saying they had no credible information of terrorists. the white house has not made any statements about those comments yet, danielle. >> all right. susan mcginnis in washington, thank you. the u.s. and china have agreed to more cooperation on the issue of cyber attacks. defense secretary leon panetta met with the chinese defense minister yesterday at the pentagon. both agreed that cyber attacks at the u.s. don't come directly from china that. intelligence experts accused china of stealing high-tech u.s. >> the bodies of a missing

mother and her oldest daughter have been identified but two younger daughters remain unaccounted for. the bodies were found last week behind a home in northern mississippi. the house belongs to family friend adam mayes who the fbi believes abducted them. he's on the run and they believe the two young daughters are still with him. rick santorum endorsed mitt romney urging supporters to deny president obama a second term. we both agree that president obama must be defeated, santorum wrote. the task will not be easy. it will require all hands on deck if our nominee is to be victorious. governor romney will be that nominee, and he hazmi endorsement and support to win this. the most critical election of our lifetime. three states hold primaries today, west virginia, indiana,

and north carolina. cbs news estimated that romney needs 287 more delegates to officially clinch the gop presidential nomination, but it won't happen today. just 123 are up for grabs. romney is campaigning in michigan today. same-sex marriage is back on the front burner of this year's campaign. two top obama administration officials vice president joe biden and arne duncan endorsed the right for gay couples to wed. he said his position is evolving. in ohio yesterday r.i.m. said there will be no evolution of his position. >> my position is marriage is between a man and a woman. that's my position and i don't intend to make any adjustments at this point. in north carolina voters are expected to easily pass an amendment to the state constitution banning same-sex marriage. democrats are holding their

national convention in north carolina in september. on the "cbs moneywatch" americans boost their borrowing and a big rollout for chrysler. ashley morrison is here in new york with that and more. good morning, ashley. >> good morning to you, danielle. stooks overseas make a recovery. they gain a half a percent while hong kong's hang seng lost about a quarter percent. the shock of the french and greek election results wore off by the end of the day on wall street. the dow was down as much as 68 points but finished just 29 points lower. the nasdaq edged into positive territory gaining a little more than a point. the white house is renewing its pressure on republicans to address student loan interest rates. it would freeze the rates. republicans agree with keeping the rates at their current level but are opposed to pay for the bill, which will cost about $6

billion. americans are using their credit cards more often. the federal veev said consumer debt rose in march by more than $21 billion. it was the seventh straight monthly increase and the largest since november of 2001. well, facebook is looking for more friends with some deep pockets. the social networking site kicked off its free initial public offering road show in new york yesterday. potential inresters asked founder and ceo mark zuckerberg questions about facebook's finances. they hope to raise $10 million when they go public later this month. dodge is making a big bet with a little car. the first production version of the dodge dart rolled off the assembly line. the dart is chrysler's first new come palkt car since 1995 and it will take on competitors like the honda civic and the ford focus. the dart will go on sale next month. i like a lot more car around me when i'm going down the road.

life-saving cancer drugs for children. for the past 15 months congress has been unable to pass a bill that could help solve the problem. dr. jon lapook went to capitol hill to find out why it hasn't been voted on. >> reporter: when you're 10 months old and fighting lieu keep ya like elena, this is what a good day looks like. 80% of children with her kind of cancer can be cured with the right kind of medication, but two months ago her dad mark shone velt was told her medication was running out. >> you pray that that's handled by the professionals and the job is getting done. >> reporter: but it's not getting done. dozens of cancer drugs are running out. the reason is due to manufacturing and problems with geneic drugs. fda commissioner dr. margaret hamburg. >> the industry has to not be afraid to let the fda know if they have a problem so that we can get in there and work with

them to fix it before it results in a shortage. >> reporter: the fda says the two bills that have been languishing in congress would help fix the problem. >> you're saying pass it. >> reporter: we met with passers of the legislation. and tom rew rooney, a republican. >> can you explain this to americans? you have something that's truly life-saving, you have both parties agreeing on it, and yet it cannot get brought to a vote. >> i don't know what has to happen for people to recognize that this has to happen. >> why would we turn our backs on these patients and on the medical community who needs this help when we know something works? >> why does it take months and months? why not today? >> i've been in congress 16 years. i've never seen a congress where it was more difficult to pass legislation. i think you should call the leadership and ask them why they haven't brought this bill up for a vote. >> so we did.

we showed up at speaker of the house john boehner's weekly press briefing. why is it that legislation that everybody agrees is desperately needed is taking so long to pass. >> congress is working on this. the senate is getting ready to move a bill. the energy and commerce is getting ready to mark up a bill in early may. but i would also ask, where's the administration been? where's the president of the united states been. >> when we spoke to the legislators, they said to talk to you. >> i respect the committee process and the committees have their work to do to investigate this. >> reporter: remember, that committee process began over a year ago. during that year, another of elena's drugs has hit the shortage lists. she needs it to soft ee een che effects. >> when you have a rash ore your

there will be possible torrential downpours from the lower great lakes into kentucky. expect showers and thunderstorms in the south with damaging winds and hail from tennessee to texas. look for heavy wind from new york to new england and elsewhere will be dry except for isolated thunderstorms. in sports the phillies began their series against the mets laugh night without all-star coal hamill. he was suspended for intentionally beaning a player on surnltd. hamill said it was his way of welcoming harper into the big leagues. during the game, a wicked collision at the plate in the eighth. the phillies ty wigginton slams into the mets' josh thole. wigginton is out and the player has to leave the game. new york, 5-2 over philadelphia.

in hockey, another huge overtime win for the new york rangers against the washington capitals. with just seconds left in regulation, the rangers' brad richards ties the game on a power-play goal. then in o.t., marc staal nails the long slapshot, giving the rangers a 3-2 win over washington. new york leads the series, three games to two ja and the phoenix coyotes won their series against nashville, beating the predators, 2-1. they now head to the western conference finals for the first time in franchise history. in basketball, a dramatic overtime win for the l.a. clippers. chris paul was hot in o.t. against the grizzlies, scoring eight of his 27 points. the dealershipers hold on to beat memphis 1rks 01-97. they now have a 3-1 series lead. manu ginobili hit consecutive threes in the first quarter to give the spurs a

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. washington, d.c., 7 f. atlanta, 80. stus, 74, denver, 64, seattle, 64. and in new jersey, a heroic rescue after a worker falls 40 feet into a vat of acid. officials say he plunged through a roof yesterday. a co-worker jumped into the vat shlg and with the help of three others pulled him out. the man is in critical condition. his co-worker was treated for

burns and the others were not seriously hurt. an elementary school in new jersey got an uninvited guest. a 75-pound bear club smashed through the glass door on friday night and started running down the hall. so the custodian gave chase but the little guy still managed to get into a classroom. >> the next thing you know you see this little black bear come skidding into the room. so i get up and yell, "get out! ." we walked out and closed door. >> police came and let the bear cub out the window. guess what the school's four teams are called? >> that's right. the bears. >> and the retired state trooper who inspired one of nor man rock well's famous paintings has died. it's called the run iowa way. he's a massachusetts state trooper sitting next to the little boy. rockwell asked him to pose when two were neighbors.

bombs which included expositives hidden inside toner cartridges shipped as cargo to the must 2010. >> this is a clever guy, very good at making bombs. he's probably al qaeda's number one threat to the united states directly. >> reporter: the latest bomb intercepted in yemen contained no metal parts meaning it would have made it past airport metal detectors. it might have been discovered through new full body scanners depending on the skill of transportation security agents. >> i could assure you the tsa and airport security generally is going to be looking very carefully at this to see what steps if any we have to take to upgrade our defenses against this type of attack. >> reporter: president obama was told of the plot last month and was assured the public was not in danger. the administration has little to say about it monday. >> what this incident makes clear is that this country has to continue to
