to attack this country. >> reporter: the device is now in the hands of the f.b.i. randall spirchgston, cbs news, -- pinkston, the construction news, -- cbs news, the white house. >> they knew about the plot last week but did not report on it because of the request of the c.i.a. defense secretary leon panetta says the agreement will help both countries avoid problems which could lead to a future crisis. just six months ago senior u.s. intelligence officials publicly accused china of stealing american high-tech data. the debate on how to keep student loans affordable is expected now to move to the senate floor today. if lawmakers do nothing, the federally backed loans, the interest rate will double on july 1 up to 6.8%. both parties want a solution. democrats want to pay for it by raising taxes on some corporations. republicans want to get the

money from a preventive health care fund. even though they are far apart, lawmakers do expect to have a deal before the deadline. an alexandria woman has been arrested in connection with the deadly road rage incident. gloria alfreda mcmillan of alexandria is charged with a felony hit and run. this started in fairfax county last friday. mcmillan and shelinda arrington both got out of their stopped cars and got into some sort of a fight. investigators believe mcmillan got back in her car and drove away crushing arrington to death in the process. there's no word what the argument was about or if the two women knew each other before that friday. the virginia state police department has released its annual crime report. the numbers fell from 4.6% for every 100,000 people in 2010 to 3.77 in 2011. robberies are down 4% but drugs are still a growing problem in

the commonwealth. narcotics offenses increased 7% in 2011 following a 5% rise in 2010. a teacher and a media services technician in the montgomery county school system have been arrested on sexual abuse charges involving minors. 50-year-old collier cornel teaches seventh grade in germantown. he's accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a 14-year-old. 39-year-old aaron la mere was a services technician in silver spring. he's accused of inappropriately exposing himself to students at the school. five d.c. men have been convicted of murder in a series of shootings which killed five people and injured nine others. it erupted over a period of eight days in 2010. the first incident was outside a party in southeast d.c. and it was a dispute over a missing bracelet. the end of the blood bath came with bullets whizzing along

south capitol street eight days later. the victims' families were in court and talked to reporters when it was over. >> it's evil, evil. i can't even call them animals because animals don't kill for fun and sport. >> the five departments will be sentence -- defendants will be sentenced in december. they each face a maximum of life in prison. an olney, maryland woman will need extensive plastic surgery to her mouth and lips after being mauled by a dog monday night. >> gary nurenberg tells us how this whole thing happened. >> reporter: dog walkers are a common sight on rose theater circle in olney. it's a neighborhood where residents know each other and their dogs. shortly after 7:00 a 24-year- old woman was walking her mother's adult rottweiler, a big dog here at the intersection of old vick boulevard whether an older neighbor came over to say hello. >> apparently the dog bit her. as to what caused that to happen, who knows.

it was just one bite to the mouth. the dog lunged out and bit at her mouth. injury to her upper and lower lip was significant. >> reporter: officer breckenridge met with the dog's owner and to use his phrase, placed the dog under house arrest in its home for ten days. the families know one another and as of monday night, the victim had not filed a complaint. gary nurenberg, 9news now. >> the dog was on a leash at the time according to gary. officer breckenridge says it has no history of biefting anyone else. -- biting anyone else. rick santorum formally endorsed mitt romney last night. he e-mailed a letter to his supporters saying he decided to make the endorsement after the two men met in pittsburgh last week. santorum cited romney's dedication to supporting pro- family initiatives as an important factor in his decision. a new poll shows president obama and mitt romney neck in

and neck. romney is given a 1 point edge over obama in the telephone poll. voters are deciding on on a constitutional amendment which would define marriage as between a man and a woman. critics say it would affect more than just same-sex marriages. they say it would invalidate all civil unions and domestic partnerships. supporters of the amendment si it protects the institution of marriage. as north carolina gets ready to vote on banning same- sex marriage, another member of president obama's administration came out in support of it. around any duncan said he unequivocally supports it.

>> the president is comfortable with same-sex couples as the president -- the vice president said being entitled to the the same rights and civil rights and civil liberties at other americans. that is why he has fought for those equal rights and opposed efforts to discriminate against citizens. >> the president has said in the past that his view on the issue is evolving. at 4:36, here's a look at some other things making news now. investigators say two bodies found behind the mississippi home of the kidnapping suspect are joanne bain and her 14-year- old daughter adrienne. police believe bain and their three daughters were abducted by adam mayes, a family friend. he still has the other to girls ages 10 and 8. the autopsy on the bodies found in a churchill downs

just about 4:40 on this tuesday morning. no it's not friday yet. it's tuesday morning. we're looking mostly cloudy, breezy today. it's going to be a mild to warm day with maybe mid- to upper 70s. there will be a threat later this afternoon for showers and storms as well. i'll be back in just a few minutes. we'll talk about how long this rain threat will last. right now monika with time saver traffic. we're going to take a live look at the beltway in southern maryland at route 4 and pennsylvania avenue. this is fine but branch avenue northbound is blocked off between allentown road and the beltway with police activity. i'll have more on that situation coming up in my next report at 4:47. >> thank you, moen came. -- thank you, monika. time for your first your money report. >> it looks better today than it did this time yesterday. yesterday was not looking so good. we were seeing global stocks getting hammered in the wake of

elections in greece and france. this morning global stocks are bouncing back after the u.s. stabilized. checking the numbers the dow stands at 13,008, only off about 30 points yesterday. meantime the nasdaq and s&p both headed higher. both up. nasdaq one and a half points and the s&p was up about half a point. americans swipe their credit cards more often in march pushing overall borrowing up more than $21 billion, more than a -- the most in more than a decade. credit card debt rose more than $5 billion. kodak will close its online photo service on july 2. a federal bankruptcy judge has approved selling its gallery to shutter fly for more than $20 million. kodak filed for bankruptcy in january and is selling its sharing business to raise money and to narrow its focus.

good morning. welcome back to 9news now. it's 4:44 on this tuesday morning. howard gave us the heads up yesterday. do we still need to have umbrellas with us today? >> yes, but for later this afternoon for most of us. far west you have a couple of showers, light ones this morning. looks like it's going to be late afternoon, maybe evening till some of us see anything. if you're sniffing a little bit, the grass pollen got into

the high category yesterday. looking at the bus stop forecast on this tuesday morning, we have mostly cloudy skies out there. it's mild. we're 62 in washington. we've got some 50s out there but 56 to 66, that general range with the sunrise just a couple of minutes past 6:00 a.m. this morning. it's going to set at about 8:08 this evening. we will see some sunny breaks here. noontime temps 73. winds also are going to pick up. you'll notice the breeze if you're going to be outside. winds may gust 25 or so. by the middle and latter parts of the afternoon, that's when we'll see a few showers, maybe a rumble or two of thunder that will move in from west to east slowly as we go through the later and afternoon hours. by 8:00 tonight 72 degrees. winds out of the south at 12 miles an hour. looking at the bigger picture, we've got the showers in pennsylvania. some thunder mixing in here across parts of kentucky, ohio and west virginia but the bulk of this is going to stay here north and west of us so this morning while we're dealing with mostly cloudy skies, it's rather quiet.

here's a quick look at live doppler 9000. hancock down to cross junction, this is 5:22. west of there through garrett county and allegheny county scattered showers. even south and west of there out of our radar range all of this tracking north and east. so this is likely going to stay west of i-18 over the next few hours. temps in the upper 50s in winchester and hagerstown and easton 59. while the pax river naval air station is 62. and locally we're all in the upper 50s and low 60s so pretty uniform air mass here with sterling and reston at 59 along with springfield and college park this morning at 62. outside on our michael & son weather camera, it's dark right now. we'll get a picture for you next time i see you. winds south at 14 and the barometer 30 even. that will be dropping as the front approach chz will be -- approaches which will be slow to push through here. it's really this stuff we're watching this morning.

the ohio valley, that's really going to b line more toward the north and west of us. this front producing this, this is going to come toward us ta. will help produce a few more showers and storms as we get into the afternoon hours. we're here at noon. maybe hagerstown. during the mid afternoon scattered showers, perhaps a rumble of thunder here this evening. then tomorrow with this front in the neighborhood and a little wave on t another chance of some showers -- wave on it, another chance of some showers. so today mid if not upper 70s with afternoon and evening showers and storms. tonight we're dipping mainly into the low to mid-60s. tomorrow 75 with more showers and a rumble of thunder. cooler on thursday. a slight chance of a passing shower mainly north but a generally drier day. friday looks good and the weekend looks nice as well. we need to get a traffic update w. that -- update. with that here's monika santami. there's a closure after major thoroughfare this morning

with police activity on the northbound side of route 5 right here, branch avenue between allentown road and the beltway. it's completely shut down. you're being diverted on to allentown road to get around the closure and over to the beltway. so be aware of that right now. we'll take you live outside. if you're planning to head here near route 4 pennsylvania avenue, the beltway sun affected by this. shoe be okay on the prince george's county side of the beltway but again it's branch avenue approaching the beltway that is blocked off this morning. let's go back over to the maps this time to the north side of town. no problems to report on the beltway between college park and silver spring. you're running smoothly both loops. no problems on 270 or 95 coming down from baltimore. we'll take a live look at new hampshire avenue looking good. and in my next report, we'll update ow that situation on branch avenue but first drivers in virginia will not get to talk face to face with vdot about the proposed ez pass transponder fee. a spokeswoman says the agency will not hold public hearings on the proposal because state law doesn't require it. vdot is proposing a $1 per

month fee for drivers to have an ez pass transpond near their car. if a-- transponder in their car. the transit agency says drivers can weigh in by going to vdot's website. 4:49. the centers for disease control says morbid obesity is still growing among people here in the u.s. >> the cdc's weight of the nation report reviews a snapshot of america's obesity epidemic which is slowing down but as anita anita brikman tells us, it isn't a pretty picture. >> reporter: duke university's justin is referring to a study release dad at the weight of the nation conference going on here in the district. the forecasting study found 42% of the u.s. population could be obese by the year 2030, 42%. individuals with severe obesity may rise to 11%. these findings suggest the health care system could see 32

million more obese people in the next two decades. it is a number that could significantly hike health care co-s. >> in materials of dollar value -- in terms of dollar value for the medical expenditures alone, that would account for over $500 billion over the next 20 years. >> reporter: however, the good news is the growth rate of overall obesity seems to be slowing down. >> those dramatic increases are going to continue through the severe obese but the overall obesity prevalence rates if anything are tending to slow a little bit. >> reporter: gl for what i've seen in the last five years is a more diverse group who are coming. they realize again it's not just a matter of weight. it's their blood sugar, their cholesterol. >> reporter: dr. denise bruner of arlington says people are more aware of the consequences of obesity and it's leading to the slowdown of overall obesity growth but she warns even with that positive trend, we as a nation have a very long way to go. >> we need to try to be

proactive as opposed to reactive because if we just approach the epidemic in a reactive stage, by 2080, 90% of americans will be obese. >> reporter: anita brikman, 9news now. >> obesity is not just a weight or appearance issue. it's -- it fuels diseases like diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, cancer and depression. pounds lost can simply mean active years of life gained. if you have a long commute, it can be hazardous to your health and could possibly be contributing to the nation's obesity problem. a new study finds people who drive longer distances to work are more likely to have a greater body mass index. bigger waist sizes, higher blood pressure among the issues. researchers in missouri also found those who commute more than 15 miles to work were more likely to be obese. researchers say commuters are spending their time sitting behind the wheel and possibly eating instead of being physically active. a new study suggests

teenagers are getting high, off pain relievers at a younger age than previously thought. researchers at michigan university looked at young people between the ages of 12 and 21 and found roughly one in 60 used prescription pain relievers to get high. children are more likely to try it at the age of 16. however, more and more 13-year- olds are starting it as well and the authors say current prevention programs aimed at high school seniors and college students might be an example of too little too late. exercise, it can counteract muscle breakdown from aging and heart failure. that's according to new research in the journal circulation. researchers found four weeks of aerobic exercise led to increased muscle strength and reduced inflammation among heart failure patients regardless of age. the study's authors say the findings challenge the belief of many doctors that cardiac rehabilitation does not help the elderly. dominoes wants to help people intolerant to gluten get

welcome back. it is a mild morning. we'll be in the mid-60s by 9:00. sunny breaks, too. a breezy day. winds gusting sometimes 20 to 25. this afternoon and evening, a better chance for a few showers, maybe a thunderstorm as highs make it into the mid if not upper 70s. i'll have another look at doppler 9000 coming up in just a moment. we'll show you what's happening in western maryland. right now here's monika with time saver traffic. we've been telling you about police activity blocking off branch avenue northbound between allentown road and the beltway. looks like they may have just reopened the road which will be good news for you early morning commuters on the northbound side of branch avenue. i'll take a look at that once again coming up in my next report at 5:01. back to you guys. u.s. troops from walter reed army medical center enjoy add day on the links in gainesville, virginia. robert trent jones golf club hosted a wounded warriors golf tournament. the money raised went to thank u.s.a. it helps troops and their families get scholarships. a new park is opening soon

in urbana and it will be more than just a place of recreation. the urbana district park will also be a memorial to fallen service members. local resident jonathan sanderson has raised about $12,000 so far for the tribute to captain john denson, the 24- year-old -- dennison. the 24-year-old man was killed in 2006. dennison loved playing outdoors and he believes a new park will be a wonderful tribute. this summer's olympic games will be the last hurrah for michael phelps. he says he is ready to enjoy life out of the pool but if he wins three medals this year, he will retire as the most decorated athlete in olympic history. the dictator holds a new york city press conference. >> jennifer lopez breaks news about a baby? teresa garcia has those stories and more in this look at entertainment. >> in my country, women have the same rights as men.
