things will go downhill. if you're watching us in western maryland, you're seeing a few showers. you'll need the umbrellas a lot sooner than we will. here's a look at our day planner as temperatures will be rising through the 60s this morning. you probably can get away without a jacket but this afternoon something just in case it does rain ow. 5:00 some scat -- rain on you. 5:00 some scattered showers and storms. we have the word breezy there. some gusts will be 20 to 25 this afternoon. lots of rain out to the west across west virginia, ohio, kentucky, pennsylvania. and some of that has snuck into western maryland here. just west of hagerstown now. toward hancock, this is 5:22. we're seeing some of those showers there through romney and paw paw and cumberland into glare rhett county as well. this -- garrett county as well. this is mainly moving up into pennsylvania. around here temps 50s and 60s. in fact upper 50s in petersburg, west virginia. 57 leesburg and manassas. annapolis on the bay still comfortable this morning, 64.

so this afternoon we'll be in the mid if not upper 70s but again there's going to be the threat for some showers and storms later on. let's go to monika santami with time saver traffic. good morning, everybody. i am going to keep you up to date on the situation in southern maryland on the northbound side of branch avenue. what they've done is reopened the ramp to the outer loop of the beltway. the ramp to the inner loop heading southbound on 495 is still blocked heading north on branch avenue, the ramp to the inner loop, you cannot access that. you'll have to head over to the outer loop or make your way around that way. let's take you outside live right now if you're planning to head over to the beltway on the south side of town. here's what it looks like at branch avenue. on the beltway itself it is unaffected. let's go back over to the maps and this time all the way out west to 66. no problems to report coming in from manassas into centreville into fairfax. we'll take a live look in centreville and show you what it looks like. still nice and light this morning heading inbound on i-66

heading toward the beltway and inside towards the district. in my next report, we'll take another look around the area in a couple of minutes. the f.b.i. stops a plot to kill americans. a group with ties to al qaeda planned to set off explosives on a jet heading to the u.s. >> delia goncalves joins us live from reagan national airport with more on how these investigators broke up the plot. delia, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, mike, andrea. we first should tell you officials say americans were never in danger. if you're heading to reagan national airport a little later today, anticipate no changes in regards to security and checking your bags through the security check point. the c.i.a. learned about the plot through foreign intelligence agencies and say that they stopped this bomb before it ever made it to the united states. the designer is believed to be top al qaeda explosives expert

ibrahim al-asiri. the underwear bomb contained no metal so chances are it could have passed through most security checks. the bomb was found in yemen before the attackers could even buy a plane ticket. >> this is a very clever guy, very good at making bombs. he's probably al qaeda's number one threat to the united states directly. >> i can assure you that the tsa and airport security generally is going to be looking very, very carefully at this to see what steps if any we have to take to upgrade our defenses against this type of attack. >> this country has to continue to remain vigilant against those that would seek to attack this country. >> reporter: you may remember those printer cartridge bombs that were found on u.s. cargo ships back in 2010.

well, officials say al-asiri is the man behind those bombs as well. coming up at 5:30, our continued efforts to stop these kind of attacks and they're getting more sophisticated and more violent as time goes on. we'll let you know whether or not this particular plot had anything to do with the anniversary of the death of osama bin laden. mike and andrea, back to you. >> thanks, delia live at reagan national airport this morning. a jury has found five d.c. men guilty of murder in a series of shootings that put four people in the morgue and nine others in the hospital. this happened back in 2010 over a period of eight days. it began outside a party in southeast with a spray of gunfire over a dispute about a missing bracelet. the end of the blood bath came with bullets flying along south capitol street. after yesterday's guilty verdicts, 9news now spoke with the victims' relatives. >> evil, evil. i can't even call them animals

because animals don't kill for fun and sport. >> the five defendants will be sentenced in september. they face up to life in prison. a mother and one of her little girls are dead and investigators believe a family friend is responsible. joanne bain and her three daughters were abducted from their home in tennessee 11 days ago. the f.b.i. is now on the hunt for adam mayes. bain and one of her daughters were found dead behind a home in mississippi. detectives believe mayes is now on the run with the 8 and 12- year-old girls. everyone should pay their fair share in taxes. >> that's the message from members of progressive maryland. that group protested outside the democratic party gala in greenbelt yesterday. they want lawmakers to avoid the doomsday cuts, the budget cuts. they want them to stand up for the so-called 99% in maryland. protesters held up signs

calling for an end to corporate loopholes in the tax code. 5:05. time for the latest your money report of the morning. >> here's jessica doyle. good morning, jess. >> good morning. all is well that ends well, right? things ended much better for the u.s. yesterday than we were expecting. this time yesterday global stocks were getting hammered in the wake of elections in greece and france, but this morning some are bouncing back. check be the numbers, the dow stands this morning at 13,008. dropped about 30 points in trading yesterday. not so bad. nasdaq inched up a point and the s&p 500 added nearly half a point. the first 2013 dodge has rolled off chrysler's assembly line eight months after preparations. partners at "u.s.a. today," the detroit free press and business insider of a few of many auto reviewers raving about the compact car that is said to get 40 miles to the gallon. the gart goes on sale in june and is considered to be the most important car chrysler will launch this year.

it is 5:09. we're looking at a few sprinkles in western maryland and parts of west virginia. most is west of interstate 81. now we're looking at some clouds around here. that's going to be the case for much of the day with some sunny breaks at times. it will be a breezy and mild day. your high temperatures in the mid-70s so you really don't

good morning. welcome back to 9news now. it's 5:14. tuesday morning, may 8. here's howard with some showers later on in the forecast. >> i'm hoping the showers will clean things up a little bit in the atmosphere. a lot of folks are still dealing with what has been a long allergy season. >> what was it yesterday? >> the grass. the numbers come in every day

at midday. this is the u.s. army allergen extract lab. 47 on the tree pollen. up to 21.7 on the grass. that's grains per cubic meter. that's considered high relative in that category. weed and mold spores are low. it's the grass which is the culprit more than likely. your bus stop forecast, hey, it's mostly cloudy out there. west of interstate 81 and western maryland, parts of west virginia, a few light showers this morning. anywhere from the mid-50s to mid-60s so a mild start. sunrise 6:02. sets at about 8:08. we'll see some sunny breaks. 66 at 9:00. still a little cool. lunch time looks all right except it's going to be breezy. don't know fits' going to be the greatest day sitting outside because the winds could gust 20, 25 miles an hour. later this afternoon showers and a few storms start moving in from west to the east.

74 at 5:00 with highs in the mid, maybe upper 70s if we get enough sunshine of the our weather headlines, a dry morning commute for the vast majority of us. however, for the afternoon, yeah, there are going to be some showers possible for the drive home. temperatures seasonal. average highs are in the low 70s. maybe just a few degrees above average and more showers and a couple of storms possible again on wednesday, especially in the afternoon. but after that, we're going to have a nice little dry stretch. we could use this rain. we're still running about 5 inches below average since january 1. a lot of rain this morning. unfortunately it's out to the west so we're seeing it west of 81. the big stuff, though, ohio, west virginia, kentucky tracking more toward pennsylvania and new york than toward us. western maryland, here's hagerstown, i-81. this is 5:22. you have a chance of some showers. hancock, going up toward breezewood as well, paw paw, romney seeing some showers. look at this sneaking north of winchester through cross junction headed toward maybe

martinsburg you'll get a light shower out of this but most of this is going to miss you us. upper 50s to around 60 in the shenandoah valley. same story baltimore and easton and here in d.c. this morning on our michael & son weather camera. there's the capitol dome. looking pretty good. visibility is good under cloudy sky. we have 62 degrees with the dew point in the low 50s so it's a little humid out there. and a south, southwesterly wind at 11 but at times today gusts 20 to 25. got two areas of showers and storms across the country, big ones. one of them is in texas. this isn't really our concern but it's going to be up here which we were just looking at on the dopplers. you can see it coming out of the ohio valley but tracking up north. looks like most of this is going to miss us. still a cold front back there. as this front gets closer to us later this afternoon, i do anticipate some showers, maybe a rumble of thunder will be developing. here at 3:00 with a few showers around, scattered about through the evening hours. on that front we could see a wave of low pressure tomorrow

produce more showers. so today mid if not upper 70s. some mainly afternoon and evening showers and storms. tomorrow after we start in the 60s, we'll get to 75. won't be as windy tomorrow. but we still have the threat for the afternoon showers and maybe a rumble of thunder. isolated shower thursday, 70. but looking really nice friday, saturday and sunday. highs low to mid-70s. another chance of showers and storms by next monday. it is now 5:18. monika santami arriving on the scene with time saver traffic. >> it's been a busy morning. it's kind of a good news-bad news situation. the good news is in southern maryland i was telling you about police activity shutting down branch avenue approaching the beltway between allentown road and 495. that has been completely reopeneded. that's good to go. but in loudoun county you want to be aware that belmont ridge road is closed between hay road and route 7 because of a

serious accident. both directions. you might want to use claiborne parkway as your alternate route in loudoun county f. you're coming in on the toll road or 66, you'll be fine. we'll take a live look at 66 close to route 50. traffic is moving well from here over to the beltway. let's go back over to the maps and this time to the northbound side of i-95. you've got a little bit after slowdown forming into woodbridge and then into springfield. we'll take a live look on the northbound side of 95. lots of volume now but no big problems to report on to 395. coming up in my next report, an update on the situation in loudoun at 5:25. 5:19 now. the civil trial involving the families of two students killed in a duck boat crash in philadelphia, that trial resumes today. two hungarian students were killed two years ago when a barge slammed into the buck boat. now -- duck boat. now the families have filed wrongful death lawsuits. the key question in court now is whether there should be a limit on how much the two vessel operators should have to

welcome back. 5:23. comfortable out there this morning. however, outdoor -- out to our west, swe have a few showers -- we have a few showers. by 9:00, we'll see mostly cloudy, maybe partly sunny in a few spots. temps in the mid-60s. we get toward lunch time. might see a few showers sneak up toward hagerstown, maybe toward western frederick county around martinsburg. we'll see temps in the lower 70s. as we get into the middle and latter part of the afternoon, this is where we're expecting some showers, a few rumbles of thunder coming across the  region by 5:45. we're at 74 degrees, highs in the mid- to upper 70s. even this evening can't rule

out a shower or storm through 10:45 or so. temperatures still running in the 60s and 70s. so grab the rain gear but you won't need a jacket this morning morning. good morning, everybody. throughout this post-season, the capitals have yet to win a game when their opponent scores first. last night was no exception. the caps were outplayed, outshot and had their victory snatched right out from underneath them. trying to get that road win when they've been doing so well. the game was tied heading into the 3rd period. caps take at lead and it looks as though they had this one in the bag with just seconds remaining. a joel ward penalty gives the rangers the power play. the rangers had the momentum and mark stahl got the game

you'll be okay except out west. west of 81 we have some showers. low 70s by noon. a breezy day, too. we'll have gusts to 25 or so with the 5:00 temperature of 74. the afternoon will feature a better chance for some of these showers and storms which this morning are all west of us, way west of us in toward the ohio valley on the west side of west virginia with the heavier ones but locally you can see as we get west of hagerstown here, out 70, you get out toward hancock, we've got some wet wetter. even sneaking through northern frederick county, virginia trying to come into west virginia, west of i-81. this is where we've got just a few light showers. temps this morning upper 50s to even mid-60s. annapolis is 64. lots of 59s on the map from cumberland, hagerstown, gaithersburg. 57 in manassas, leesburg and culpeper for the cool spot. so in spite of the clouds, some sunny breaks and even showers and storms a. mild to almost warm day with highs mid- to upper 70s. maybe 80 town tarred the tappahannock airport. it's now 5:30. monika santami, you have a list

i see. >> i do. we had one serious situation in southern maryland on branch avenue that was cleared up and only to be replaced by another serious situation. this time in loudoun county. it's closing belmont ridge road. use the claiborne parkway instead. we'll take you outside live. no problems to report at the american legion bridge. you can see eight before volume across the river. this time to the other side of town. no problems on 95 coming in from baltimore, the bw parkway same story. we'll end with a live look on 95 at route 198. no problems to report. coming up in my next report, we'll take a look at 270. back to you. >> thanks, monika. a device meant to be on a plane headed for the united states is now in the hands of the f.b.i. the feds ended up foiling a plot by a group with ties to al qaeda. they were trying to kill americans using an underwear bomb that could possibly get past metal detectors. >> delia goncalves joins us

live with more on how investigators broke up this plot. >> reporter: it's business as usual at ray gangs national airport this hour. no -- at ray gang national airport this hour. no change -- reagan national airport this hour. no changes in security. the c.i.a. says it was a team effort that helped them identify ibrahim al- asiri as the mastermind behind this plot. he's the same person behind the underwear bomber in 2009. this underwear bomb was a little bit different, more sophisticated designed to bypass x-rays though it could have been picked up by a full body scan and a very alert tsa agent. >> the unction engages in awb in -- the united states engages in a number of operations to go after al qaeda, and their militant allies, their terrorist allies who would try to attack the united states.

>> i did speak to one person who was involved in stopping this plot. that person said if this had occurred prior to 9/11, we would not have been able to stop it. they would have succeeded and americans would have been killed. >> reporter: we're happy to say there is good news and this plot was foiled before it even made it to the u.s. we're told that attackers couldn't even buy a plane ticket. that's how early they don't their hands on this plot. the ap first broke the story saying it was hatched to coincide with the may 1 anniversary of osama bin laden's death. however, many u.s. officials say despite the date, there is no credible connection. coming up at 6:00, where the bomb and these would-be attackers are now. andrea, mike, back to you. >> thanks, delia live at reagan national airport this morning. same-sex marriage is now shaping up to possibly become a hot button issue in the presidential election. over the past few days vice president joe biden and secretary of education arne

duncan have both basically come out and supported same-sex marriage. it all puts a bit of pressure on president obama who says he is struggling with the issue and has been. the campaign says biden's comments are nothing new. >> the president sets the policy. i am absolutely comfortable with the fact that men marrying men, women marrying women and heterosexual men and women are entitled to the exact same rights. >> there may be a good reason why the president is hedging his bets when it comes to bay marriage. even though the majority of americans support it, it's opposed by a majority of african-americans and those over 50 and those without a college education. they were bitter primary rivals but now finally former presidential candidate rick santorum is endorsing mitt romney for president. the former pennsylvania senator e-mailed a letter to his

western maryland, parts of west virginia, west of i-81 be seeing a few showers this morning. here's a look at our bus stop forecast. mostly cloudy. on the weather terrace, some nice breaks out there. i think we'll have a good sunrise in a few minutes. that happens just a cup of -- a couple of minutes after 6:00 a.m. we're going into the 70s today. mid if not upper 70s or depending on how much sunshine we're going to see today. we'll definitely see sunny breaks. about 73 at noon with highs mid- to upper 70s. 74 for 4:00 p.m. the winds will be picking up. south winds 10 to 20, gusting 25. by mid to the latter part of the afternoon and evening hours, scattered showers and a couple rumbles of thunder can't be ruled out. this morning we're watching all of the activity well west of us. about a few hundreds miles. you see ohio and west virginia, some has snuck into western maryland. we're seeing this. martinsburg a few light sprinkles for you toward hancock, generally west of

hagueerstown. green castle, this is west of you. this stuff is generally light in nature. the real heavy stuff still way west, west of interstate 79. 63 in college park at this hour. annapolis is 64. they're the warm spot on the board while manassas and leesburg, gaithersburg 57. springfield 59 and arlington 58 degrees. outside on our michael & son weather camera, there's some clouds but lots of breaks. i think we're in for a nice pretty sunadvise. -- sunrise. a southwesterly wind at 11 miles an hour. look at all the showers and storms. you think we're going to have a wet day but much of this will shoot up in toward pennsylvania the way it looks. for us, well, this front is going to be coming through later o. here we are at 2:45. some showers around. maybe some rumbles of thunder on the west side of 95. they'll be with us at times on and off through the afternoon commute and looks like we'll have another batch of showers tomorrow. so today 76, breezy, scattered showers and storms, some into

the evening. 60s tonight. mid-70s tomorrow. again with more showers. thursday an ice lated showers -- an isolated shower, cooler. friday and saturday look beautiful. highs between 70 and 75. let's go to monika santami with the very latest time saver traffic. the latest is what you're going to get, especially on the westbound side of route 50. i've been looking at the cameras and there's a pretty big situation. it's a multi-vehicle accident on the westbound side of route 50 at route 202 inside the beltway. i'm going to step out and first show you what it looks like live from our sky 9 cameras or actually first at our traffic land camera at route 202. it was a multi-vehicle accident. we're told at least five cars involved. you can see the crews blocking the left lane. now let's go to our sky 9 camera. the wide shot here is going to show you the delay on the inbound side, westbound side of route 50 approaching route 202. left side of the roadway blocked and it's quite a significant delay approaching the accident scene. i'll keep you posted on this

one throughout the morning. in the mean time let's go back over to our maps. there's another situation i need to tell you about. this one is all the way out west in loudoun county where an accident blocks belmont ridge road between hay road and route 7. you'll want to use the claiborne parkway to get around this situation. we'll take a live look outside if you're planning to head a little closer in. here's what it looks like in tysons on the toll road at route 7. i'll keep you posted on both of those situations east and west at 5:54. in this morning's health alert, morbid obesity is still growing among people in the u.s. according to the centers for disease control. >> anita brikman has more on the cdc's weight of the nation report. >> i was one of the lead authors on the study. >> reporter: duke university's justin is referring to a study released today at the weight of the nation conference going on here in the district. the forecasting study found 42% of the u.s. population could be

obese by the year 2030, 42%. individuals with severe obesity may rise to 11%. these findings suggest the health care system could see 32 million more obese people in the next two decades t. is a number that could significantly hike health care costs. >> in terms of dollar value and for the medical expenditures alone, that would account for over $500 billion over the next 20 years. >> reporter: however, the good news is the growth rate of overall obesity seems to be slowing down. >> those dramatic increases are going to continue for the severe obese but the overall obesity prevalence rates if anything are tending to slow a little bit. >> from what i've seen in the last five years is a more diverse group who are coming. they realize again it's not just a matter of weight. it's their blood sugar, their cholesterol. >> reporter: dr. denise bruner ever arlington says people are more aware of the consequences

of obesity and it's leading to the slowdown of overall obesity growth but she warns we as a nation have a long way to go. >> we have to try to be proactive as opposed to reactive. because if we just approach this epidemic in a reactive stage, by 2080 90% of americans will be obese. >> reporter: anita brikman, 9news now. >> obesity is not a weight or appearance issue. research shows it fuels diseases like diabetes, cancer, even depression. pounds last can simply mean active years of life gained. 5:52. caught on tape, a high speed police chase from a car other than a police cruiser. it happened this weekend in seattle. a man trying to elude police hit a car and bus downtown. the vehicle that was hit captured the collision on his dash cam. you can see smoke coming from the crash out of the radiator. >> wow.

now to a man's brush with death on a russian highway. >> we want to warn you the last video was jarring. this will be even more jarring. this is graphic but both the crash victims mile an hour rack loosely survive -- victims miraculously survived. the driver made an emergency stop over the weekend but failed to put up any flares or warning signs. he was hit by a car and flown into the air. you can see it right there on the right. amazingly the man only suffered a broken leg and that's it. wow. right now -- i still can't get over that video. time to take another look at the question of the day now. two out of five women say they have done one of these things when they were mad at their man. is it a, the silent treatment, b, threw a shoe at him or c, keyed his vehicle? >> dina wrote d, none of the above. throwing a shoe? it might mess up a good shoe. keying a vehicle costs me money
