few showers and rumble of thunder as temps get into the mid if not upper 70s. winds could be gusting 25 miles an hour. a bit breezy at times. you see the showers well west of us but as we zoom in, you see here this is west of hagerstown now. this is i-81. so a couple of sprinkles between the stateline, williams port down toward martinsburg and out west they're scattered about. that's it on the rain. nothing near the metro as temperatures have dipped to 61 in town. 56 in leesburg. annapolis 63 and 59 in la plata. we'll have sun mixing with clouds at times. today mid-70s but watch out for the afternoon showers and storms approaching. let's go to monika santami at 6:00 a.m. with your time saver traffic. i have to give credit to police and crew on the scene of a multivehicle accident on the westbound side of route 50 at route 202. they were able to move everything to the left shoulder pretty quickly. i'm going to take you to a live picture from sky 9 on the westbound side. you can see that everything was moved to the shoulder but it

was there long enough in the rush hour to cause at least a mild backup. we're zooming out to see that delay on the westbound side of route 50 approaching route 202 in landover. keep that in mind for your traffic plans. got news is you have the lanes open. the bad news is the delay. we're going to take a look all the way to the west side of town. this has been closed for a while. belmont ridge road in loudoun county between hay road and route 7. it's because of an accident. i subject you go ahead and use claiborne parkway as your alternate route. we're trying to get in touch with authorities to figure out what's going on and how long it will be shut down. if you're planning to head here on the northbound side of 95 into spring field, you've got off and on delays through lorton. in the next report an update on both of those situations at 6:11. let's get a check on stories happening today that we'll be following for you. the senate is expected to vote on whether to freeze rates for most student loans. that's scheduled for noon.

before that groups who support -- [ inaudible ] the montgomery county council is holding a public hearing tonight about charging fees for ambulance rides. county executive ike leggett says basically the county needs the money. tonight's hearing begins at 7:30 on the third floor of the council office building in rockville. there will be a celebration at the world war ii memorial marking the day the war ended in europe on this date 67 years ago. the ceremony begins this morning at 9:00. also today, we hope to learn more about an al qaeda terror plot broken up by the c.i.a. >> it involved another scheme to put an airline in an airline passenger's underwear. it's the latest threat involving airliners. >> delia goncalves is live at national airport this morning. are we going to see any immediate changes when it comes to security delia? >> reporter: absolutely not. that is pretty surprising. no changes here at the airport. it's pretty much business as usual. that's because officials say this plot was actually stopped

before attackers were even able take buy a plane ticket. so there was no threat to any americans at any point. officials won't disclose the whereabouts of ibrahim al- asiri. he's also responsible for the underwear bomb that failed on christmas day 2009. this underwear bomb stopped in yemen, however, did not contain metal and it would have passed x-rays though we're told a full body scan may have picked it up. >> what this incident makes clear is that this country has to continue to remain vigilant against those that would seek to attack this country. >> this device if it's a functioning device, that is a threat to americans generally but it was not a particular threat in this case because we were able to intercept it and stop it before it made it to

the plane. >> no word on the whereabouts of the man who was supposed to wear this bomb. coming up 569:30 we'll -- up at 6:30, we'll have more details on the timing of this plot and the anniversary death of osama bin laden. >> thanks, delia goncalves, live at national airport this morning. the five men accused of plotting to blow up a bridge in ohio have pleaded not guilty in the case. they made their first court appearance yesterday. they wanted to blow up a bridge on may day to protest big business but they were dealing with an undercover f.b.i. agent the whole time. defense attorneys call it entrapment. the suspects are facing life in prison if convicted. mayor vincent gray is -- [ inaudible ] a jury returned guilty verdicts against all five yesterday. four were convicted of first degree murder. a fifth suspect on a lesser charge. five people were killed and nine hurt in the shootings two years ago. the most notable one on south

capitol street. the men will be sentenced in september. new at 6:00 a.m., proof that new drivers, especially teenagers, are safer when they are driving alone a. new report from aaa find as teen's risk of dieing in a crash skyrockets when there are other teenagers in the car. it plummets when there's an adult in the car. researchers find when 16 or a 17-year-old is behind the wheel, their risk of dying jumps 44% when there's a passenger younger than 21 in the car with them. it goes up to 50% when there are two young passengers but when there's an adult in the car, the risk of dieing in a crash for a teen falls by 62%. this study came out as aaa kicks off its global youth traffic safety month. jessica doyle is watching your money. the crazy things some people spend their money on. >> there's a hot new craze when it comes to goofy socks. >> that's right. when we talk about fashion trends, we tend to talk about

commute dry. this morning it's fine but as you go west of interstate 81 and 79, this is where we've got the heaviest rains. locally i've moved live doppler 9000 haze hd into the -- 9000 hd into this area. temps are in the upper 50s to around 60 in the shenandoah valley. also on the eastern shore. to the south tappahannock reporting 53 but from newland and reedville, we're 57, 58 respectively down there and even catlett, charlie called in from fauquier county and said he's 57 and dry this morning. there are some clouds out there but also some breaks. 61 degrees with a south wind at 13. and the barometer dropping, 29.98 on the mercury. we're watching the showers this afternoon. by noontime anyway back in western maryland, eastern west virginia. this will get closer to the

metro and i-95 toward 3:00. as we go into the afternoon, look at the scattering of showers around. rumbles of thunder through 6:00 p.m. here we are at 9:00. this front comes through but tomorrow a wave on the front gives us yet more showers from midday in the afternoon. so today mid 70s, if not upper 70s. some sunny breaks as well. better chance of showers and storms in the afternoon. 60 to 65 tonight with a few showers. 75 tomorrow with more showers. thursday cooler, stray shower possible, around 70. friday looks great around 70. right now the weekend looks pretty good. temps in the mid-70s. let's go to monika santami at 6:17. this commute has had its issues. it's east, it's west. it's just been all over town. imgoing to start off with the east side of town on the westbound side ever route 50. it's a multi-vehicle crash. it was moved to the left shoulder a while ago. let's go to our cameras so i can show you what it looks like on the westbound side of route

50. you can still see the active on -- activity on the shoulder. you see the damaged vehicle here as well. you've got delays for about a mile. once you're at the accident scene, looks like the pace sip proving. i would give yourself a little extra time. this time all the way out west. this accident i've been telling you about since early this morning on belmont ridge road which is closed between hay road and route 7 in loudoun county. involve as tree into the woods, a tree is down. it's a serious situation. it's going to be blocked for a while so i suggest you use the claiborne parkway to get around that. you have your off and on delays coming through lorton at 41 miles an hour as you head toward newington and springfield. we'll take a live look further north on 395. here's what it looks like at duke vote. doesn't look bad once you're on 395 to the 14th street bridge. in my next report, we'll update you on all those situations again at 6:25. >> thank you, monika. next in sports, anything

virginia and stay open till 7:30 tonight. in north carolina there is a key ballot amendment as well. it would define marriage as only between one man and one woman and ban other domestic unions. presumptive republican nominee -- presidential nominee mitt romney is getting the backing of another primary rival. surprisingly rick santorum sent out an e-mail monday night. in it he contends that romney is tough on the campaign trail and he endorses him citing their common goal of beating president owe obama in november. the c.i.a. hopes it can soon learn more about al qaeda's methods and its motives. >> a bomb plot was stopped before a target was ever selected. >> delia goncalves is live at national airport to tell us how the c.i.a. thwarted this plot. >> reporter: the c.i.a. says because they stopped this plot so early on, a plane ticket wasn't even purchased, that there was never a threat to any americans. so a pretty routine day here at

the airport. no changes in security though it is obvious that air travel continues to be a target for al qaeda. the latest bomb plot we're talking about came from ibrahim al-asiri, the explosives expert responsible for the failed underwear bomb in 2009 and the printer card trij bombs -- cartridge bombs found in 2010. this bomb contained no metal and would have passed airport x- rays but a full body scan and alert tsa agents could have detected this bomb. >> the united states engages in a number of operations to go after al qaeda and their militant allies, their terrorist allies who would try to attack the united states. >> i did speak to one person who was involved in stopping this plot. and that person said that if this had occurred prior to 9/11, we would not have been

able to stop t. they would have succeeded. americans would have been killed. >> reporter: good news to report. they stopped this bomb plot before it ever made it here to the u.s. and so a successful day for security officials and they say that president obama learned of this plot back in april. even though the ap report, it was first hatched to coincide with the may 1 anniversary of the death of osama bin laden, u.s. officials say other than the date, there is no credible connection. so good news and no threat to americans in connection to this bomb plot that they stopped in yemen. andrea, back to you. >> delia goncalves with that update from national airport this morning. the white house says it will not negotiate with al qaeda to gain the freedom of the 70-year-old from rockville maryland who was kidnapped by terrorists last year. in it he says he will be killed unless the u.s. meets al

qaeda's demands. the white house demands warren weinstein be we leased but says it does not negotiate with terrorists. the reverend dr. mary marguerite kahn was shot inside st. peter's episcopal church last week and was taken off life support. her funeral will be held this afternoon at a church in baltimore. we're learning exactly what's put d.c. music legend chuck brown in the hospital. the"the washington post" reports it's pneumonia. that's video of brown performing for npr. he had a blood clot removed. his daughter says her father is recovering but there's no timetable for his release from the hospital. 6:36. jessica doyle is watching your money and your grocery list. >> indeed.

a big local supermarket chain is changing the way it handles pork. >> it's looking to move to a more humane approach when it comes to selling pork. safeway is the nation's second largest grocery chain and it's moving to a different purchasing policy. it will stop buying from suppliers that use pig gestation crates. most pork currently comes from souths -- sows confined to narrow crates. activists say open pens are more humane. mcdonald's and burger king also have similar plans. we told but this story last week. now yahoo's c.e.o. scott thompson says he is sorry for allowing an inaccuracy about his education to appear on his official bio. but he says he's not going to bow to pressure to step down. there's still no explanation as to why his bio has periodically listed a bachelor's degree in computer science that he never

arrived. microsoft is offering its xbox 360 gaming console for 99 bucks, a $200 savings. the catch? there's always a catch, people. you have to sign up for a two- year xbox live gold plan. you buy the console at a discounted price but you can cancel early and then be subject to an early termination fee from 12 to 1250 bucks. -- to 250 bucks. xbox 360 owners usually use it to play multigames. i did a little calculation. 15 times 24 is 360 bucks to save 200. of course you get the service. if you play a lot, maybe. i'm not a gamer. i leave it up to you people. >> got to give them the information. do with it what you will. >> it's probably a good deal. >> in some circles.
