neck and the eastern shore. we've got the showers there. that will be leaving the next hour as temperatures, they're all in the 60s this morning. so it's a muggy start. it's going to abwarm day and more -- to be a warm day and more rain this afternoon. monika santami is in with time saver traffic. we're focusing on maryland roads this time around. good morning, everybody. things looking great. no problems to report all the  way in from the north, frederick, as you head down in clarksburg and rockville. no problems to report. we'll take a live look at 270 and i-70 or i-70 just east of 270. if you're planning to head over there, no issues to report here and nice and quiet as you head south from frederick. let's go back out to the maps and this time to the north side of the beltway which sls fine as -- which is also fine as you travel on the outer loop. no problems to report leaving college park. we'll take a live look in southern maryland now. route 5 and route -- and the beltway is looking good as you leave route 5 heading for the wilson bridge. coming up in my next report,

we'll take a look at 95 in virginia at 5:09. the plot thickens in the revelation of al qaeda's plans to blow up a u.s.-bound jet. >> could the would-be bomber have been a double agent? delia goncalves live at reagan national airport with the story. delia, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it sounds like a plot to a movie or some thriller book, but it is in fact true. we've learned that a double agent infiltrated this terrorist group and then handed over the bomb to the c.i.a. the informant only described as a saudi informant, gained the trust of the group al qaeda in the arabian peninsula and then that man volunteered to carry a bomb. this version of the underwear bomb contained no metals and for sure would have passed most x-ray machines in the airport. a senior u.s. intelligence official said the agencies were able to track the bomb at all times so no american lives were ever in danger. >> al qaeda and the arabian

peninsula are the closest to osama bin laden's version of al qaeda. that's why they feel that this is their duty, they feel this is their obligation to continue bin laden's fight. >> we've dealt major blows against al qaeda over the past two years, but remnants of al qaeda do remain resilient and do remain a threat, whether they be in yemen, in pakistan or elsewhere. >> reporter: while this foiled plot has not changed security measures here at the airport, reagan national and other airports nationwide, there are some major concerns about how we're using some of the safety equipment we already have in many of the airports. we'll have that part of the story coming up at 5:30. back to you. >> delia goncalves with that update from national airport. tuesday was a good day for mitt romney. he swept all three of the republican primaries and he has some other news to celebrate. a new gallop poll shows the race between romney and the

president as a dead heat. it finds 47% of registered voters would pick romney while 44% would choose the president. that's a big change from just two weeks ago when the same poll gave president obama a 7- point lead. the longest serving republican in the u.s. senate will not serve a seventh term. tea party voters in indiana rallied behind richard murdoch to help him beat dick lugar. it's believed the 80-year-old lugar will not run as a third party candidate. in north carolina voters have approved amend be the state constitution to allow marriage only between a man and a woman. that makes north carolina the 30th state to adopt a ban on same-sex marriage. closer to home, it's an issue that just won't go away. in montgomery county ambulance fees. voters said no to a county ambulance fee in november 2010, but county executive ike leggett says he wants to collect the money anyway. the county council held a public hearing on the issue last night. leggett is pushing for a

program to let the county get reimbursed for ambulance service directly from the insurance companies' medicare. individuals would pay nothing he says under this plan. the council is trying to finalize next year's county budget within the next two weeks. 5:05. time for the latest your money report of the morning. >> a positive side of things going down. we have plenty of room to go up. >> that's right. we're looking for a comeback today. there are signs we may actually get one. we shall see. fingers crossed. europe is trading higher and that's after the dow fell for five days in a row. wall street following on global markets. headed lower on continuing concerns about political and economic uncertainty in greece. checking these numbers for you, the dow stands this morning back below 13,000, 12,932. the good news here, it paired nearly a 200-point loss yesterday to close down 76 points so that wasn't horrible. the nasdaq lost 11 points and the s&p 500 was down by almost

6. this could help wall street today. dow component disney is reporting better than expected quarterly profits and sales after the closing bell. strong attendance at its theme parks offset the sci-fi bomb john carter. that lost the company $200 million, just that movie. investors are also pretty excited about the success of the avengers so shares of disney have surged in after hours trading. they've already passed their all-time high. this is a bit of bad news. fossil sparked a sell-off among retailers after weak sales in europe caused its first quarter profits to fall short of estimates. shares plunged nearly 50% wiping out about $3 billion in market value. investors are bracing for more companies with large exposure to europe to warn the profits may miss the mark because of the region's chick troubles. when we talk about europe and greece, this is why. when the businesses fall there, you see it in these

region overnight. up in new jersey and long island, they're seeing it more here. locally on live doppler 9000 hd, this is all east of i-95 except south of fredricksburg where we have a couple of sprinkles still left over. in anne arundel county, a couple of sprinkles right there. this stuff is very light. it's across the bay, the eastern shore from easton and st. michael toward tillman. you're seeing the showers pulling out of calvert county. dunkirk, north beach just about over with there. la plata, these showers will be winding down the next few minutes. st. mary's county, you're going to have showers around on and off for the next 35, 40 minutes or so as far as temperatures, they're way up there. 63 hagerstown. 63 winchester and easton. 69 at the pax river naval air station. as we look outside on our weather camera, there's the white house. good visibility. washington monument in the distance. 67 degrees with cloudy skies and a south, southwesterly wind at 8. that is a warm direction. dew points in the 60s. that is one of the reasons it's

had two accidents on the beltway. don't give me that look, howard, on the north side of town. there were two separate accidents, both single vehicle on the inner and outer loops of the beltway at route 355. minor injuries but authorities are on the scene so it may slow you down a bit. we'll take a live look outside. closer to college park. here's what it looks like at route 1. outer loop is fine here as you head into silver spring. just up ahead you want to watch out for that activity at route 355. let's go back out to the maps or actually to a live picture again on the beltway on the other side of town of the here's what it looks like at the american legion bridge. no problems to report the entire western stretch between bethesda and tysons. a quick look at our geographer ins. want to -- at our geographerrics. want to give you heads up on metro. if you plan to use the blue line single tracking it van dorn and franconia. buses are available. in my next report, an update on area roads again. a judge has denied bond to an alexandria woman arrested and jailed on felony hit and

run charges. >> she's 32-year-old gloria mcmillion handle. fairfax county -- mcmillion handle. fairfax -- mcmillan. fairfax county police say she got into an argument with another driver and she ran over that driver 21-year-old shelinda arrington who died of her injuries. mcmillan tried to hide her suv by abandoning it in southwest washington. court records show mcmillan has faced more than two dozen charges over the last decade. the man accused of attacking a woman in petworth with a hammer has a competency hearing. in court yesterday the judge learned the mental evaluation of michael davis is complete. right now davis is accused in one attack but authorities believe he may be connected to at least three others, including one that killed a man from denver. the would-be bomber from that al qaeda plot to blow up a u.s.-bound jet was an undercover intelligence agent according to cbs news. that man was said to be passing intelligence from the terrorist

group he was with along to both the saudi and american governments. 9news now reporter delia goncalves is live at reagan airport with more on this story. what an amazing turn in this, delia. >> reporter: absolutely. officials are calling this the most sophisticated and most cooperative effort to take down a terrorist plot that they have seen and they called this obviously a huge success. of course we know it was a success in part to this informant who was working on the inside. that double agent worked his way into the terrorist group, gained their trust, and volunteered to carry the underwear bomb. he handed that bomb over to the c.i.a. in yemen. this version of the underwear bomb, a more sophisticated upgrade of previous versions contained no metal and it certainly would have bypassed metal detectors at the airport. however, a full body scanner could have picked up the bomb. the problem is the 700 full body scanners are not used

often. officials say nine out of ten passengers are scanned using the regular metal detectors. >> clearly a tsa who has less to do and is able to focus on the explosive threat, on behavior related to that on resolving suspicious circumstances, i think that is a key ingredient to security and needs to continue. >> an increased sophistication at trying to prevent being detected, they're making mistakes, they're not big mistakes but we've been fortunate that they've been caught. glk back to those full body scanners, there are about 170 or so airports in the country that have full body scanners, at least one, maybe two at the very most reagan national is among the airports that have full body scanners. however, not used very often and only used in about one or two lanes here at the airport. coming up at 6:00, why some

members of congress say releasing this kind of detailed information, even though it plot was a success, could put more american lives at risk. we'll have that part of the story coming up in a half-hour. back to you, mike. >> thanks, delia goncalves live at reagan national this morning. a former teacher is facing up to ten years in prison. he has been convicted of sexual misconduct with a 12-year-old student. he taught gifted and talented student in the dale city area. he placed his hand under a girl's shirt. the g8 summit comes next week. protesters will gather some 21 miles away at baker park in frederick. the recreation department has recommended that site as the location for an occupy protest during the summit. with all of the people streaming into the city, police there are advising merchants to be on alert.

good morning. welcome back to 9news now on this wednesday, may 9. here's howard with a wet wednesday forecast. >> we had showers overnight. we're going to dry out a little while for the morning, midday, but by the afternoon, more showers and even some thunderstorms can't be ruled out coming in as a front approaches. we could have some of the rain around for the first half of tonight. if you have any plans outside, get it done really by noon, 1:00, 2:00 the latest because i think after that all bets are off. here's your bus stop forecast. we've got a few sprimples still out there -- sprinkles still out there south and east of washington, the eastern shore, southern maryland. the rest of us mostly cloudy and muggy with temperatures starting out in the 60s this morning sun up just after 6:00. it will set about 8:10 this afternoon. we have mostly cloudy skies today. we are looking at maybe a sunny break or to for the middle of the day with some -- or two for the middle of the day with some luck. this afternoon a chance for more showers and storms. even by 1:00. that will be basically west of

d.c. by the middle of the afternoon we could start looking at some showers. temperatures 76. that will be close for the high today at 3:00. highs anywhere from mid- to upper 70s across the board. even for the drive home looks like we'll be dodging some raindrops. that could slow you down for the evening commute and cancel some late afternoon, evening sports practices or games. there go the showers from last night. they're generally east of i-95 now. out to the west you see more rain in ken ken into hoe -- owe rain in kentucky into ohio. out west it's quiet. but to the east this is where we're looking at those showers around this morning this stuff is generally white. a couple of yellow pockets mixed in with the green around easton. that's the heavier showers we're looking at. from the coast of anne arundel county across the bay bridge, light showers there into southern calvert as well down route 4. you're seeing that center and southern calvert, points south seeing some of those showers. just a sprinkle south of clinton at the moment but that's really not much to talk

about. southern st. mary's county back across into montrose on the northern neck. in and around fredericksburg, like sprinkles there and some of these could get back to charles county over the next hour. temps are way up. it's muggy. just about everybody in the low to mid-60s. the cool spot 63 leesburg and lovettsville. the warm spot here in town and bell vir at 66. bwi64. things are starting to brighten up as we're just a few minutes before sunrise with 66 degrees. winds south, southwest at 6 and skies are cloudy this morning. looking at the showers pulling away from us off to the east. as we get toward noon not bad. mid afternoon here comes some showers and storms developing. potentially heavier rains off to the south. by 9:00 look at southern maryland, the eastern shore. could be raining at a good clip while west we're starting to clear out. maybe a spotty shower at worst on thursday. today 77. afternoon, nighttime showers and storms diminishing after midnight. we dip into the 50s.

71 tomorrow with a spotty shower. 40s in many areas by friday morning but a nice afternoon around 70. saturday looks good. 76. sunday maybe a late shower and more rain early next week. let's go to monika now, 5:48. she has time saver traffic. you've been a little busy so far. it's getting busier. early in the morning we've already had several separate crashes to talk about. i'm going to start off first with the north side of town there. were two separate accidents, single vehicles involved, boat on the inner and louder loops of the -- and outer loops of the beltway at 355. everything is on the shulder. a live look outside in silver spring. doesn't seem to be affecting traffic near georgia avenue so that's a good thing if you're on the outer loop or headed there leaving 95 toward georgia avenue. let's go back over to the maps. this time all the way down to southern maryland where there's an accident in accokeek on route 210 at barry road. crews are just headed out to the scene there. if you're headed out of waldorf, let's take a live look

at route 301 and route 5. that's doing fine but if you're planning to use barry road out of waldorf toward accokeek, you might hit heavy traffic. i was on the phone with prince george's county police. they're on their way to an accident on good luck road east of the parkway as well. metro blue line single tracking between van dorn and franconia. foggy bottom escalators are out of service. more information at 6:00. back to you. here's what's making news now at 5:50 this morning. closing arguments are expected today against the man accused of killing jennifer hudson's mother, brother and nephew. prosecutors rested tuesday. defense lawyers say the defendant william balfour will not take the stand. the judge refused a defense request to dismiss the charges. she helped children's imaginations run wild. maurice sendak has died. he wrote and illustrated several children's books including the popular "where

the wild things are." it won top honors as the best children's book. he suffered a stroke last week. he was 83. firefighters have a wildfire in southern california about 30% contained. there were some mandatory evacuations but crews did manage to keep the flames away if any homes. the fire did however burn some abandoned structures and vehicles. it's the 9th of the month. be a buddy. call your buddy and remind them about the importance ever doing a monthly breast cancer exam, scheduling an annual mammogram if you're over age 40 and having a clinical exam by a doctor or nurse practitioner. that call could be a life saver a. buddy can be a spouse, relative, friend, co-worker or even an active duty captain in the united states air force. >> overall i think cancer has made me a better person. but i don't think it knew what kind of enemy it was dealing with because i certainly kicked

its butt. picked the wrong lady. >> that lady is captain candice adams. she's one of the 11,000 women under age 30 who are diagnosed every year with breast cancer. like a lot in her age group, cancer never even crossed her mind and she didn't do routine self-exams. >> i just would go -- be in the shower and wash my chest and things like that and that would be about it. >> reporter: she was 29 when she learned the marble size lump she found in her breast was one of the most aggressive cancer strains triple negative. >> finding out i was triple negative was worse than finding out i had breast cancer. the large possibility from the doctor's perspective that it wasn't going to go away and it had a huge recurrence. i was paralyzed with fear. >> reporter: there to lift her up with her parents and brother and fiance ryan. from then on candice would fight cancer her way.

>> dear cancer, you know me. i'm candice adams. >> reporter: what came out of candice taking control of her life was this film posted on her website "kisses to cancer." >> you're serious, nothing to take lightly. i respect the gravity of you because you take life. but i choose to minimize you because you are never going to take mine. >> reporter: from chemo to surgery and reconstruction, she shared her intimate, sometimes disturbing, often funny emotional journey. >> the shirt laid flat on my chest. i felt like a boy. but i'll do it again anyway. i'll get up tomorrow and i'll find goodness in my day. >> reporter: it was her chance to celebrate life, not just to survive it and it was a way to educate and empower other young women. >> you have to be aware of your body. if you notice anything wrong, do something about it because you can control it if you do something about it. >> she's a very happy captain adams because she and her

american mother-daughter duo in prince george's county police history. >> i'm surprised she's a police officer. i'm like, you really love what you're doing? i'm like yeah. >> reporter: this mother- daughter team is one of three in the prince george's county county police department. they don't typically work together day to day. department policy separates family members while on duty. but after work, they're not just moms. they're mentors. >> it's nice. i mean, you always have someone to confide in. am i doing this right. what would you do if you had done it. >> i'm definitely very proud of her but i still have that worry in my matter. >> reporter: with mother's day less than a week away, i asked the daughter to say any sort of mother's day message for their mom. >> i'm proud of you. you're my idol. >> thank you. >> i'm proud of her and i love her a lot. she is definitely an inspiration to be on the police department, somebody i look up to. >> i appreciate everything she's done for me, the guidance
