afternoon showers and storms are likely to return, especially from mid afternoon on. the evening commute may be much wetter than the morning commute with highs in the mid- to upper 70s. we'll hit the highs 3:00, 4:00 p.m. this afternoon. you look at the doppler radars here over the past six hours or so and we're looking at this area of rain which is moving across the east coast now from around boston through our neck of the woods. we'll zoom in a little bit and show you what's happening here. east of us across the bay, still yellow showing up. that's moderate rain showers. also south and east of town. calvert county seeing some of those showers still lingering and fredricksburg, they'll come back. look at these temperatures. they are way up there. it's muggy, too, humid. low 60s north and west. 67 here going about 77 or so for the high. but watch out for the afternoon showers and storms. it's 6:00 a.m. we go to monika santami with your time saver traffic. >> thank you so much. good morning, everybody. we've had several separate minor accidents really all over town this morning.

luckily southbound 270 that's not the case. on the southbound side you've got off and on delays. you're going to go i'd say 40 miles, 41 miles an hour leaving i-70 into clarksburg. the pace does improve into germantown. we'll take a live look on the beltway. still looking good. that's the outer loop as you head over west toward silver spring. then you'll slow down a bit in bethesda. two separate accidents on the beltway. both inner and outer loops at 355 that were cleared out of the roadway. back over to the maps this time all the way south in virginia. on the northbound side of 95 again off and on as you leave quantico and dale city to woodbridge and in springfield let's go out live now on the northbound side of i-95 and 395. looking great at duke street. a few brake lights as you approach seminary road. i'm going to go back to the graphics. want to give you a heads up on metro. blue line is single tracking between van dorn and franconia. at foggy bottom escalators are out of service. buses are available. the station remains open. in my next report, another look

at area roads at 6:12. the story of how the c.i.a. thwarted an al qaeda terror plot is starting to sound like something right out of a james bond movie. we're now learning it involved a double agent. >> it's draw dropping. delia goncalves live at national airport to fill us in on the whole thing. wow, delia. >> reporter: it's very rare that we kind of get this detailed information, and some are saying it could be trouble that we are getting this detailed information, but it certainly it quite exciting and a victory for u.s. intelligence officials just as al qaeda is getting more sophisticated and stepping up its bomb plots, u.s. intelligence officials are working harder and smarter to stop them and obviously it is working. officials will not disclose the identity of its double agent, only describing him as a saudi informant who infiltrated the militant group and volunteered to wear that underwear bomb. anonymous u.s. intelligence officials say they kept tabs on

the bomb at all times and it never posed a threat to americans. however, representative peter king, chairman of the house homeland security committee says the c.i.a. is now highly concerned that too much information is being leaked. >> this is the most -- one of the most sophisticated and successful intelligence operations that i've been aware of. i've never seen anything so tightly held. it was held as close as anything i've ever seen. that's why the leak when it broke i guess about a week ago really put a lot at risk, including human lives. even now the fact that it's coming out can be dangerous. >> reporter: however, this information is being leaked and it is being disseminated to obviously many members of the media. however, representative king is still calling this classified information and he says there will likely be an investigation launched to figure out the source of the leak. coming up at 6:30, what the

department of homeland security is saying about this mission. back to you. >> thanks, deal. delia goncalves live at national airport this morning. the tsa has released these photos of some gun parts and they were found inside a stuffed animal. a 4-year-old boy tried to carry that stuffed animal through security in rhode island. the boy's father says he doesn't know how the gun parts got into his son's toys. security interviewed him and eventually the father and the son were allowed to continue on their flight without the gun parts. a deadly road rage incident caught on video could be released by fairfax county investigators soon. 21-year-old shelinda arrington was struck and killed after she got in an argument with another woman along harrison lane. police say gloria mcmillan has been charged more than two dozen times over the years and a man and child were in the suv with mcmillan she used to rn over that woman -- to run over that woman on friday.

she remains behind bars this morning. in campaign 2012 as expected mitt romney won all of the republican primaries tuesday but there are other story lines out of yesterday's vote, and the biggest one is out of north carolina. voters there approved amendment one. it adds an amendment to the state constitution defining marriage as only between one man and a woman and it bans other kinds of domestic partnerships for civil unions for both gay and straight couples. also, the senate's longest serving republican lost his primary baby. richard lugar lost to tea party favorite richard murdoch. lugar has been in the senate since 1977. president obama won tuesday's democratic primary in west virginia with 57% of the vote getting 42% keith judd. who is keith judd? he's a man serving time in federal prison in texas.

and the results mean judd is eligible for at least one delegate at the democratic convention this summer. who would have thought. 6:06. nearly two million federal employees, many of them in our area are about to be asked a personal question by uncle sam. are you gay or are you straight. the office of personnel management is offering the survey to federal workers. it will ask them about strength and weaknesses of their department. opm hope it is will help managers across the board and gay rights activists actually support the survey. >> when discrimination might be happening in the work force, when teams might not be functioning as well as they could because there could be some discrimination. >> opm denied our request for an interview but in a statement the government employees can opt out of answering that survey if they wish. >> 6:06. jessica doyle is watching your money and your sanity.

your move.gov and moving.org. as a rule of thumb you want to get at least three in home price estimates in writing. don't assume an estimate made online or over the phone will be firm. be sure to get a written contract that spells out pickup and delivery dates. consider getting full value protection. it will cost you more upfront but you'll get replacement or cash for any damaged or lost belongings. regulations go into effect requiring interstate movers to include full value protection in the price quote. finally, know your rights as a consumer. you can read pore at protect your move.gov or if staying in state, check with your local government. if the movers don't hold up their end of the bargain, you can contact law enforcement. these are tips to keep you kind of sane when that moving day comes. you know, the thing that i've always encountered was the long carry fee that you get, that you don't expect at the end of the day that really jacks up that bill. >> whatever you can do to protect yourself and do the work on the front end saves you

force a compromise through congress. >> it's $6 billion per year, that's a lot of money for the taxpayers. >> absolutely it's a lot. that's about how much we spend on three weeks in the war in afghanistan. >> reporter: even for a congress bitterly divided by party politics, the senate debate was remarkably nasty. >> we don't think young people should have to suffer notice more than they -- suffer any more than they already are as a result of this president's failure to turn the economy around. >> reporter: when congress lowered rates in 2007, 77 republicans signed on as co- sponsors but in today's poisonous political environment, each party has its own plan. democrats want to raise taxes on the wealthy to pay the $6 billion tab. republicans want to raid a fund in obama's health care reform plan. >> we're sending a clear message that they'd rather protect wealthy tax dodgers.

looking forward to weather. we have the graduations we were talking about, catholic university and howard both having commencements on saturday. but today buddy check 9 day, say good morning to cynthia mclaughlin with the center for breast health. she approved our message of early detection. >> we have some rain in the forecast today but the weekend is looking pretty good. saturday morning, saturday afternoon looks fine. i'm going to be at the dog show judging for them saturday morning as well. looking forward to that. your bus stop forecast, got a few showers south south and east of town. this stuff is pretty spotty in nature. otherwise mostly cloudy and muggy. temps in the 60s this morning. sunrise happens 6:01 so a few minutes ago. we are looking at a lot of clouds today with the threat for a shower at 8:00 but not too much going on. as we get into the middle of the day, we may see a sunny break, mid-70s by noon. this afternoon a better chance of showers and storms returning to the region, especially after 3:00, 4:00 here in d.c. so the evening commute could be a slow one due to the rain. temperatures by 8:00 will be back in the upper 60s and some

of those showers around right through the midnight hour. if you have evening plans, they just might not happen outside. not much going on west of town except in ohio and kentucky. that's the later afternoon showers. this morning looking at all this action generally east of us now. this is what pushed through overnight. still looking at a few showers toward stafford right now and dal again. this is going to return into charles county. much of the steadier rains are east of the bay, places like easton and st. michaels dealing with that their temperature 63 degrees. in the mid-60s down south. 66 in culpeper. 63 hagerstown. gaithersburg and baltimore 64. as we look outside on our michael & son weather camera, we have cloudy skies over the white house and most of the region for that matter. 67 degrees with a southwest wind 8 miles an hour. that's a warm breeze. that wind, though, will likely turn more west to northwest later on. let's look at the first batch of rain here. here comes batch number two. look how the moisture is streaming north from tennessee through kentucky and ohio.

that's what we've got for the afternoon. probably through even the midnight hour we're going to have on and off showers but after midnight things diminish and tomorrow a better day with a slim chance of a spotty shower in the afternoon. 77, muggy today. we've got some showers and storms returning. by mid- to late afternoon through the first half of the night we dip into the 50s. 71 tomorrow with a spotty shower. friday not a bad day at all, about 70. as we head toward saturday, a great start to the weekend. mid-70s. sunday could be a shower late in the day, also mid-70s. but by monday and tuesday, showers and some storms return, temps still in the 70s. monika is in a great mood this wednesday morning with time saver traffic. it's everyone behind the scenes. they make funny faces and do silly things. if you're planning to head around town, nothing silly about it. things are looking okay. no problems to report. there were quite a few accidents early this morning on some major thoroughfares. they've all been cleared up for the most part and now you just have the slow traffic to deal

with, namely on 95 northbound where it's going to be out of dale city. as you can see all this yellow into the orange heading through woodbridge toward lorton, newington and springfield. we'll take a live look in springfield northbound 95. you examine see the lanes are open. -- you can see the lanes are open. you just have a bit of traffic heading on 395 or the beltway. on the north side, this is going to be heavier as you head northbound on 395 on our vs.dot camera -- on our vdot camera. it's okay up at the 14th street bridge. i just took a look at that as well. back over to the maps and this time to the gw parkway leaving the beltway. you're going to be fine heading into the downtown area. no problems on the toll road and 66. we'll take a live look on the beltway west side of town here at the american legion bridge. traffic volumes are still pretty light. in my next report we'll take a look at the north side of town at 6:25. >> thank you, monika. it's 6:19. next in sports it's do or die for the caps while at camden yards, one player does something we haven't seen in nine years. >> right now it's time for

welcome back. your weather first on this wednesday morning. we've got some showers still across areas to our south and east. that will be the case for another couple of hours. a nice break, though, through probably early afternoon before more showers and potential thunder returns to the region. you'll notice temperatures by 11:00 climbing into the low 70s. mid-70s at 1:00 with highs in the mid- to upper 70s but could be a wet commute home.

on the eastern shore and also to our south scattered about southern maryland coming out of fredricksburg to around quantico or so. some of these showers are going to sneak back into charles county, st. mary's, might even get towards southern fairfax over the prince george's county area one to two hours. this stuff is spotty in nature but the heavier, steadier rains will happen later this afternoon. low 60s martinsburg. cumberland is down to 59 but we're 66. other than the muggies, it's a comfortable start to this wednesday. monika santami, what about that commute? comfortable for drivers? generally speaking it's more comfortable than it was actually an hour ago. we had several spat accidents all -- separate accidents all around town. for the most part you're just dealing with delays right now. on the beltway on the north side of town to name a few areas. on the outer loop of the beltway you've got some slow traffic leaving college park into silver spring. we're going to take a live look at new hampshire avenue n. is one of the areas i'm talking about. look at that. slowing down from this point most of the way into silver

twist to an already incredible story. good morning, delia. >> reporter: good morning. certainly it's a success story and pretty incredible indeed. we're learning that there was a double agent who acted as an informant infiltrating this system and this terrorist group. aso fist indicated a network as al -- as sophisticated a network as al kai d.a. s the -- as al qaeda s the c.i.a. is working harder to infiltrate that work. an agent volunteered to wear that bomb and handed it over to the c.i.a. in yemen. this version contained no metal parts but a full body scan we're told could have detected that bomb. u.s. intelligence officials say no american lives were ever in danger because they knew where the bomb was at all times. >> we acknowledge our adversaries are very creative and very determined and very persist tent.

that requires us to always be thinking pro actively, not just reactively. >> we do have close counterterrorism cooperation with yemen. that's undertaken clearly with the full knowledge and support of the yemen government -- yemen any government, rather. we continue to work with them closely and collaborate closely on the full range of counterterrorism issues. >> reporter: back to the full body scans that could have detected this bomb, there are about 700 of those full body scanners at 170 airports around the country. of course reagan national is among that group of airports. the problem is, though, only one out of ten people actually go through those full body scanners. most folks are just going through the regular x-ray machines so certainly while there are no major changes right now in airport security, you may see tsa using the full body scanners in the near future. back to you, andrea. >> all right. delia goncalves with that live

update from national airport this morning. frederick county, maryland is bracing for next week's g8 summit of world leaders. it's going to be held at camp david near thurmont. protests are expected and they'll be in the city of frederick. that's 21 miles away. police say as long as things remain peaceful, protesters are welcome. the city parks and recreation commission recommends protesters aballowed at bake -- be allowed at baker park in the downtown area. residents of the city aren't quite sure what to expect. >> as long as they're peaceful, you know, they have free speech. but if it's going to be radicals, no, no, we don't need that in frederick. >> to be on the safe side, police have told downtown businesses to bring in street signs and take precautions just in case things get out of hand. schools will be closed on may 18 just as a precaution. a woman who says she was victimized by a man posing as a montgomery county police officer is speaking out this morning. police released this composite sketch of the suspect.

they say he followed this woman by car last thursday, flashed a badge. she stopped her car in front of her church in silver spring. the victim who speaks only spanish told ken molestina, our reporter, what happened next. [foreign language] >> reporter: she says once he managed to get her to stop, he pulled her out of the car and made her take a seat on the curb. it was at that point she realized the man wasn't legit and instead was out to rob her. >> police say anyone who fears they are being tricked by a police impersonator should call 911 immediately and give your location so another officer can be sent to that location. it is 6:36. jessica doyle is watching your money. >> if you're sick of paying $50, $60, $70, $80 to fill your vehicle, good news on the way. >> very good news. good news is already here. gas prices have already dropped substantially. i don't know if you've noticed at the pump recently. they could fall even more.

oil prices keep sliding. down 9% in just the last five days. keep going. aaa says gas prices in the washington area are averaging $3.80 a gallon for regular this morning. that's down 8 cents from a week ago, down a quarter from this time last month, 25 whole cents. a year ago today, we were paying $4 a gallon. the government is now estimating fuel prices will average $3.79 a gallon in the summer months, down more than 15 cents from an earlier estimate. we like that. check this out. it is a self-driving car. nevada is the first state take- to-approve a license for a driverless vehicle. the license was issued to google. no driver needed. if you want to sit in there, you typically can sit in the front seat ready to take controls if need be. earlier this spring, google said it had safely completed over 200,000 miles of computer- led driving. we'll have to see how this

goes. there's a new kind of shopping discount you may be seeing more and more. you walk past a store and an instant coupon is delivered to your phone. consumers who say yes to the service are sent messages about in store sales. this technology is called gee crow fencing. northface has been doing it since 2010 but you're seeing new stores jump on board too making it a permanent program this year. "wall street journal" says the jury is still out whether consumers will embrace the idea. i think piece by piece it's going to be hard to get a lot of people to jump on board unless you only go to macy's or bloomingdale's or niemanns but if there is a service that can aggregate all this i think it's a winner. >> they can zip a barcode to your phone? >> you sign up for the service and the geo tags you. our favorite buddy mike is in the area and let's give up 20% off shoes. >> you're walking past the store and they reach out and grab you. >> you have to opt in.

quantico and stafford, a few sprimples coming up the poe -- sprinkles coming up the potomac. that's going to be about it here for the next little while until we get later in the deal and that next batch of showers returns. temps are running in the mid- 60s from 64 in gaithersburg to 66 in manassas and fort belvoir. even up to columbia and over to crofton temperature about 65. outside on our weather camera, cloudy skies. a little bit of haze out there but it's dry, 66 with the high humidity levels at 88%. it is a muggy, muggy wednesday morning. there's the rain from last night. here the other batch i was talking about. you can see the moisture screaming through kentucky and tennessee. looks like the heaviest stuff may be south of town tonight. however, we're going to clear out some overnight and only a spotty shower possible tomorrow afternoon. 77 muggy degrees today with showers and storms returning by mid afternoon. tonight we dip into the 50s. tomorrow 71. not a bad day but watch out for a spotty shower in the afternoon. a very nice friday. chilly in the morning.

at this point? >> i don't feel guilty at all oo guilt at all. >> how does it feel? >> it feels fantastic. i carry my stress around in my shoulder. that feels good. she's doing a really good job working out the stress spots because i get a frozen shoulder. i get frozen neck all the time. >> those things jessica gets and a lot of women, i feel the pressure right in here. they usually feel the nopts in the -- knots in the shoulder. what can we do at home to kind of work out the kinks? >> i think stretching is very important, focusing on your posture. also something you can do at home is lying on a tennis ball will help get exactly what i'm doing as well and of course just taking time for yourself. >> sounds good. we like it. we know jessica is having a great time. shelly, the spa director at serenity at world gate in herndon, virginia. thank you for being here today.
