do it? >> president obama is making history again. now he is the first president to publicly endorse same-sex marriage. we've got team coverage for you tonight on this hot-button issue. >> gary nurenberg is standing by with local reaction, including a pastor who says this move is certain to cost him votes. >> but we begin with ken molestina. >> reporter: the president has widely been criticized for not picking a side but now the president is making it absolutely clear he is in favor of gay couples being married. president barack obama made the landmark announcement in an interview with good morning america's robin roberts. >> i've just concluded that for me personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that i think same-sex couples should be able to get married.

>> reporter: until now the president had maintained what he described as an ever evolving stance on the issue. it was in 1996 while running for illinois state senate that he favored same-sex marriage. on sunday vice president joe biden pledged his support for same-sex marriages on nbc's "meet the press." two days later in north carolina voter passed legislation that bans gay marriage in those two states. >> i hesitated on gay marriage in part because i thought civil unions would be sufficient. >> reporter: his comments will surely serve as the major sticking point during the remainder of this election year. presumptive republican nominee mitt romney wasted no time offering his opposition.

asked. >> it looked like he was ducking the question, so in order to put it behind him i think he really did the only thing key do politically. >> reporter: but it could hurt the president with some all- important independents. >> there may be some voters what are up for grabs who don't agree with the president and feel uncomfortable. >> reporter: those independents are key even in recent polls most favored same-sex marriage. many of them don't. in an election this tight, where every vote is likely to count, president obama is making a gamble. anita. >> gary, we'll see what happens. maryland governor martin o'malley applauds the president's position on gay marriage. in a statement on his official website o'malley said, quote, the president affirmed that for the people committed to religious freedom the way forward is always to be found through greater respect for the equal rights and human dignity of all. in maryland we agree. same-sex marriages are set to become legal in maryland

january 1st. governor o'malley says even if the law does go to referendum he's confident it will not be voted down. russia's president, vladimir putin, says he will not be coming to the summit at camp david. he will send dmitry medvedev instead. president obama and putin will now meet in mexico. and we are learning more tonight about the double agent who foiled al-qaida's latest plot to blow an airliner from the sky. according to officials he gave the information that led to last week's drone striking a gains al-qaida's chief of external operations. but in foiling that plot the double agent's cover is now blown and that cost the cia a valuable asset. >> when you're sitting at the table watching this threat develop you have a simple priority, and that is to

ensure, you don't put american lives or others at risk. >> officials say there are no immediate plans to change airport security screenings. you are not going to believe this next story. viewing child pornography on- line is not a crime. according to the new york state court of appeals. the court's decision comes after a college professor was sentenced to prison in 2009 after 100 such images were found on his computer. this ruling intends to distinguish the difference between viewing and downloading. the story is stirring up a fair storm on our facebook page. "child porn should be illegal everywhere. it's outrageous that it's not against the law." another viewer writes, "why would you not believe it? perhaps semantics are at work but if you go into a public park where you witness a couple performing a lewd act on a picnic table have you done

anything illegal?" the people have spoken and the post office listened up. the agency says it will now back away from its plan to close up to 3700 low-revenue post offices. the post office will trim down the staff while maintaining part-time staff. an economist says loudoun county will lose out on $200 of economic growth if it says no. county supervisor ken reed came away from the meeting with economist steven fuller saying he's still not convinced of the benefit. supervisors will vote on the project in july. sentencing is tomorrow for a man convicted of murdering an off-duty maryland state trooper. williams is to you facing up to life in prison. the victim, trooper wesley brown. brown was working security for an applebee's in 2010. turns out he threw williams out

of the store for being drunk and disorderly. williams got a gun, came back, and shot brown to death. tonight prince william county paid tributes to officers what have made that ultimate sacrifice. the citizen police academy alumni association held a memorial service for fallen law enforcement officers who lived or served in prince william county. >> very important for coworkers, for family members, for all of us would knew officers killed in the line of duty. >> tonight's service honored troopers and officers killed in the line of duty. metropolitan police chief cathy lanier will get to keep her job for the next five years. in a statement mayor vince gray says crime is down.

now an update on the beating of a virginia man in baltimore's inner harbor. four people were arrested in

the st. patrick's day attack. a spokesman for the baltimore attorney's office tells us the court commissioner filed an initial list are charms. the state's attorney modified that to reflect its assessment of the illegal actions. nothing can make the blood boil like somebody who intentionally takes up two parking spots in a crowded lot. >> if you think it's against the law, turns out it isn't. the issue is now on its way to the state's highest court. >> bruce w gilmore ended up sentenced to four years of prison after police found a knife and drugs on him in 2008 but he got off, and it was all about parking. that's because gilmore parked his vehicle like this one. he took up two parking spaces, which is why police said they started questioning him which led to the search, arrest, and conviction. but the courts threw out the

favor same-sex marriage, yet every time the voters take a crack at the issue they turn thumbs down. derek thinks he knows what's wrong with this picture. >> anita, it's a lot like the so-called bradley effect, but instead of being white voters saying, oh, yea, i support that guy, but heads tating in the privacy of the booth, it's conservative. egan looked at gay marriage votes in 33 states and found that surveys tend to underestimate the opposition to same-sex by an average vb seven points. in other words, it appears a whole lot of us americans are still evolving on the issue. for example would the voting rights act of 1965 have passed in a referendum?

rather chilly tomorrow night. we're not going to quite make it into the thirkts but the low 40s in the burb looks like a lot. overnight, showers ending east, clearing, breezy and cooler, lows in the 50s. and winds out of the northwest at 10 to about 15. now, tomorrow morning partly cloudy, breezy and cool. grab your jacket. 50s and 60s. that doesn't sound bad, but winds northwest 10 to 20, that's going to make it a little on the chilly side. by afternoon, partly cloudy, breezy and cool. highs will struggle to get to 70, and many areas north and west of town will not quite get to 70. i know it's psychological but winds northwesterly 10 to 20. 50s to start, chilly. by noon, still cool, only in the 60s. by evening, cool, temperatures 67 to about 72. next three days, nice on friday, still breezy and still kind of cool. we'll say 71, very nice on
