sun is up momentarily. 56 degrees in washington with a noontime temp at 64. breezy and windy. gusts 25 to 30. highs trying to make a run toward 70 which is a few degrees below average. some rain yesterday. almost an inch. eight-tenths of an inch in reedville in the northern neck. there goes the rain this morning up toward new england. we've cleared out very nicely. your temperatures in the 50s. some spots down to 50 in hagerstown. even upper 40s toward luray and the valley while la plata is 52. in spite of the sun and the wind, it may not feel as warm as this but temperatures will make 70s in town. mid-60s in hagerstown and cumberland. it is now 6:00 a.m. good morning to you, monika. good morning. good morning, everybody. overall we have lots of slow traffic on the may your thursday refairs, name -- major thoroughfares, namely 270. a tough one coming out of frederick most the way through

route 80. as you can see it's very heavy and slow at route 109 as well. keep that in mind for your travel times. maybe give yourself a few extra minutes. now loads of information on public transportation. first of all, starting off with metro. at foggy bottom once again this morning the escalators are out. buses are available. the station remains open. red line is single tracking between tacoma and silver spring. that will cause delays this morning. marc delays on the brunswick line 870 and 890 are running 10 to 15 minutes late this morning. my next report at 6:15. at the top of the hour we want to get a check on some of the stories happening today. a sentencing hearing begins at 9:30 for cerel williams convicted in the murder of off- duty maryland state trooper wesley brown. trooper brown was killed outside a forestville, maryland restaurant in 2010. williams could get life in prison. the washington national cathedral is going to dedicate its carving of rosa park.

it joins other carvings honoring those who fought for social justice. the dedication will take place with a choral concert at 5:30. radio station wpgc is calling for a prayer today for chuck brown. the d.c. go go music legend is fighting pneumonia. the station is asking people to say a prayer at noon for brown's recovery. according to one report, president obama had planned to announce his support for same- sex marriage before the democratic national convention this summer. >> but political reports vice president joe biden's announcement sunday that he supports same-sex marriage forced the president's hand. either way president obama's announcement is what people are talking about this morning. >> delia goncalves is live outside the white house with more on the story. good morning, delia. >> reporter: good morning, mike. a lot of analysts in fact say the v.p.'s statement forced president obama's hand as an dray ya mentioned and it -- as andrea mentioned and it would

have been awkward if he had not come out and said it. there were several reasons for him to come out with his opinion as early as he did. in 2004 we learned when obama was returning for senate, he said marriage was between a man and a woman. now eight years later he says it's -- says his personal relationships have changed his opinion. he struggled with the issue thinking civil unions would protect the legal right and benefits of same-sex couples but now he says his opinion has changed but still believes states should decide on their own. in fact, just tuesday north carolina, the state where the democratic convention will be held later this summer became the 30th state to ban gay marriage. >> i have to tell you that over the course of several years as i talked to friends and family and neighbors, when i think about members of my own staff who are incredibly committed,

same-sex relationships who are raising kids together, when i think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained. >> i have the same view on marriage that i had when i was governor and that i've expressed many times. i believe marriage is a relgtship between a -- relationship between a man and a woman. >> reporter: critics of president obama say he's flip- flopping. coming up at 6:30, we'll have local reaction, including how the president's remarks could hurt him politically with a very big base that has supported him in the past. mike, back to you. >> thanks a lot, delia goncalves live outside the white house this morning. the president's so-called evolution on this issue mirrors the same change in a lot of americans. in 1996, a gallop poll found

27% of americans supported same- sex marriage. 68% opposed back then. again this is '96. fast forward to 2004 when massachusetts became the first state to legalize same-sex marriage, 42% of americans favored same-sex marriage and 55% of americans were opposed. now to this week 50% of americans support same-sex marriage. 48% are opposed. changing gears, a special session begins next week in maryland's capital but the deal is set and the votes are in place to finalize a budget avoiding half a billion dollars in drastic cuts. the house and senate are expected to approve the new budget which hikes taxes on high earners. that's individuals who make $100,000 a year or couples making $150,000 a year. their taxes will go up as much as three-quarters of a percent. when it comes to taking up the idea of building a casino in building, governor oh -- in prince george's county,

governor o'malley says there may need be to a second session held this spr. new at 6:00, another attempt to keep bars and taverns open later in the district. kwame brown is trying again. his plan would permit city bars to sell drinks until 4:00 a.m. on all district and federal holidays. the plan would also do away with increasing the drink tax. it's estimated the city could enlegitimate an -- generate an extra $2 million in tax revenue from brown's proposal. d.c. police chief cathy lanier will stay in her position for at least another five years. she got a contract extension. she's been with the department for more than 20 years. mayor vincent gray applauds the extension saying the district residents have felt safer under lanier's leadership. 6:06. jessica doyle is watching your money and some people with new found money. >> there's a downside apparently to all those employees at facebook who are about to become rich. >> yeah. it's a nice problem to v. it's kind of hard to feel sorry for these people who are going to

be filthy rich soon. but their tax bill is going to be insane. when the company goes public, probably this month, thousands of employees will get the share they worked so hard for for years. facebook created a new type of employee equity. thousands of current and former facebook employees will have their facebook stock -- [indiscernible] that means they own that stock outright. they can sell t. they don't have a long time to wait to do so which is the change. the downside here, the average tax bill for getting all that stock? $1.1 million per employee. >> that's the tax bill. >> that's the tax bill. >> think about how much they've made. >> but they're going to have to sell stock or take out a loan to be able to pay that. for many employees, taxes will be around 45% of their new found wealth. ouch. >> look at what they made, though.

moving o. solar panels are getting a little more affordable. "the new york times" reports that installers who often work for home depot or lowe's are putting together deals for consumers. they're taking advantage of hefty tax breaks, creative financing and a glut of cheap chinese made panels to make solar available to the mass market. installations more than doubled in the last few years. hotel food is getting healthier. our partners at "u.s.a. today" report that hyatt will unveil today possibly the broadest health food policy. menus will feature organic vegetables, seafood, meat and dairy. portion sizes will be smaller. even the burger is going on a diet dropping from 1200 calories to 800. other chains have also made healthier revisions to their menus. everybody is getting on board. thank you. >> you knew the capitals and rangers would be going to a game seven. the verizon center crowd helped

it is 6:12 on this thursday morning. we want to get a check on some of the stories making news. russian president vladimir putin will not take part in next week's g8 summit. he told the white house he needs to work on setting up his new cabinet. he was sworn in on monday. the g8 summit begins at camp david in frederick, maryland next week. a pair of explosions rocked the syrian capital of damascus this morning. television reports say dozens of people are either dead or hurt. the target appears to be a military intelligence building. the blast happened just as people were showing up for work. the olympic torch is lit. 45 minutes ago it was lit at olympia, the site of the ancient greek games. london plays host to this year's summer games. the opening ceremonies are july

27. 6:12. weather time now. we have the weekend coming up. howard says things are going to start changing dramatically. >> we're going to spend a lot more time outside the next few days. the clouds are gone. the rain is gone. temperatures are going to be in a good spot over the weekend. the one iffy thing today, the winds. the winds are going to gust at times 25 to 30 miles an hour. we'll get rid of the winds as we head into later friday and saturday. here's a look at our bus stop forecast. temperatures anywhere from the upper 40s to upper 50s right now. and breezes a little bit. they really haven't picked up as much as they're going to later this morning into the afternoon. sunrise at 6:00 ap and sets at 8:10 so you have some time this evening to be outside and enjoy the temperatures which are making a run into the upper 60s to near 70 by the latter part of the afternoon. 64 at noon. 68 at 4:00. still with a northwest wind at 18. gusting 25 to 30. as we head toward 8:00 p.m. lower 60s. northwest at 13.

tonight the winds are going to go 5 to 10. that will allow temperatures in many areas to dip into the low 40s. look at the radar over the past few hours. all the rain now starting to clear atlantic city. it will be out of new york in a few minutes. boston will take a few more hours but that's what we had yesterday and last night. dropping anywhere from about four tenths to eight-tenths of an inch of rain. 51 in arlington right now to 50 in laytonsville. bwi is 53. we have 40s in places like culpeper down to 48 and even toward luray 48 to 49 degrees. as we look outside on our michael & son weather camera, yeah, sunshine glinting off the capitol dome. 56 degrees. northwest winds at 9. that barometer is going to be rising quickly over the next couple of days. low pressure leaves us. it's spinning here. high pressure is building in. between the high and the low, that pressure gradient is going to drive the wind. we look like we're going to stay mainly dry right through the weekend. slight chance of a sprinkle in

lifelong pleasure of reading, it starts one word at a time, step by step. first graders seem to take the steps pretty quickly. >> 41 words. that's fantastic. >> reporter: in fact, you might say their reading steps are more of a jog. >> tell me what you're reading about. >> what's the story about? >> it's about a boy who had old socks. >> reporter: with help from an ipod touch and a program called teacher mate, every student gets one on one reading instruction several times in the same class. >> gone are the days of the traditional standard delivery of teaching. we don't have students that learn that way anymore. this allows us to meet students where they are and the way they learn. >> reporter: in in case it's some n small groups for a few minutes at a time and then they rotate stations. >> kangaroos are going to teacher mate. my giraffes are at reading.

46 in orange. 56 here in washington. pretty good looking day in spite of the winds. we're going to have temperatures ranging in the mid- 60s north to the low 70s in culpeper, down toward tappahannock. we'll top out about 70 this afternoon. really nice weekend coming up. that full forecast in a few minutes. right now monika is in with time saver traffic. >> thank so you much, howard. good morning, esk. overall right know you're just going to find the slow traffic on the major thoroughfares. i'll start off this time with 66 where you have the slow traffic out of manassas. you're going to go an average of about 3w-7 miles an hour -- 37 miles an hour as you head in toward centreville toward route 29. itself pace improves -- the pace improves till you get to fairfax and slows down again from route 50 to about 123. we'll go outside live at route 123. you can see the slow traffic is continuous coming inbound toward the beltway but the lanes are open so that's good news for you. back over to the graphics. if you're planning to head over on to metro, want to give you some good news. the entrance escalators at

even though obama reportedly raised $1 million within 90 minutes of his announcement, he stands to lose and it may cost him a large base that essentially helped elect him into office in the first place. we're talking about the black votes, specifically african- american churches who have opposed gay marriage, even though a number of polls suggest more and more americans are now supporting the issue. >> reporter: are the african- americans going to abandon the president over this issue? >> i think so a significant number, a number that would really hurt his political career. >> it looked to all the world by just saying he was evolving on this that he was ducking the question. so in order to put it behind him, i think he really did the only thing key do politically -- he could do splitically. >> reporter: -- politically. >> reporter: however jim moran

militants linked to a new terror plot against the united states have been taken out. security officials in yemen say they were killed in an air strike early this morning and reports all of them were part of al qaeda and linked to that new underwear bombing plot against the u.s. former intelligence officials say the double agent who gave up information about the plot also led drones to those terrorists in yemen. would bringing metro to loudoun county bring positive changes or negative ones? people opposed to the silver line extension to ashburn would have -- say it would have a bad impact on life in loudoun. economist dr. stephen fuller says it would abpositive change. at a forum yesterday he said without the silver line, loudoun would forgo $200 billion in growth. >> it's whether or not loudoun county wants to be part of the party and otherwise the outcome is more residential development

with less commercial development, a higher tax burden to residents n. is a no brainer. >> i have nothing against dulles rail. i think it should go to the airport and stop there. i don't think loudoun county residents are going to benefit from it. >> just three of the nine members from loudoun county board of supervisors attended wednesday's event. today metro's bosses will be meeting and they'll get a report on whether or not those trains are running on type. we've learned it all depends on which color you ride. overall the orange line is the best when it comes to on-time performance. just under 93% of those trains are on time. the yellow and green lines are at 91%. the red line is at 90% and blue line liners are seeing blue. those trains are just under 88% of the time on time. 6:36. jessica doyle is here to help you get hired and get a job you deserve. >> which is a problem because a lot of people are

but the rain yesterday helped clean out the atmosphere a little bit. >> it did. we have our numbers generally around 1145. we do it every single day. the numbers we have from yesterday, they were a little bit better than what we got on tuesday as the tree pollen has come down to the moderate category. the grass is still high but that's about a third less or a third of the count that we had on tuesday. and weeds and mold were low. so the grass pollen may be the culprit if you've been suffering this week. that's been way up there. bus stop forecast, it is partly to mostly sunny. a little breezy out there. temperatures in the upper 40s to upper 50s. sunrise occurred at 6:00 a.m. it will set at 10 after 8:00 this evening. we'll see a little of sun today. during the afternoon we'll have windy conditions. in fact the breezes already picking up. northwesterly winds 15 to 20 miles an hour. by noon 64. after noon, 3:00, 67. 3:00, 4:00, 5:00 we'll hit somewhere around there about 70 for the high and still the

upper 60s at 6:00 p.m. so you have outdoor plans today, the breeze is going to be the biggest factor but you'll be able to get to that sporting event or take a walk. luray in the 40s. 55 in southern maryland. only 50 in gaithersburg and hagerstown this morning. and in washington we're in the mid-50s. there are your winds starting to pick up in the shenandoah valley from winchester to hagerstown gusting over 20 miles an hour. we have gusts in the 17 mile an hour range. a lot of sunshine showing up on the michael & son weather camera with generally clear skies. 47 on the dew point. that number is dropping that's another measure of how much moisture is in the air. we're really starting to dry out on the heels of the northwesterly winds. as you look at the big picture across the country, got a storm system down in texas. this is going to produce some heavy rains. also some severe thunderstorms today down across parts of south texas. and this is probably our next weather maker. but i don't think we're going to see it around here to potentially early next week. maybe late on sunday. so with yesterday's storm

this great program that teaches children good old fashion fun and health. what are we making? >> fudge baby pancakes even though it looks huge. what we do, it's really easy. kids of all ages can do this. if you have young and older students, you can have the younger ones measure and the older ones cut some of the fruit. >> you already have three eggs. >> we have three eggs, three- quarters cups of milk. >> i'll work on some of the toppings, cut up some fruit. >> absolutely. we put in two teaspoons of vanilla extract. >> this is half crepe, half pancake kind of thing? >> yes. it's so delicious and fluff jip. we put in three quarter cups of flour, a tablespoon of sugar and orange zest. we're going to get a little loud here. >> blend it real quick. >> we'll blend it really quick. you can mix this at home with a whisk. this is faster and funner.
