coming from dale city to woodbridge, up into springfield. we'll take a live look a little further north on 395 which is final at duke street heading to seminary road and the 14th street bridge. let's go back over to the maps and this time to the other side of town. if you're planning to head over into the district across the pentagon and here at the 14th street bridge on 395, no problems to report. in fact, we're going to take a live look at beltway on the south side of town. here's what it looks like at st. barnabas road. no problems to report to the wilson bridge. all the southern maryland corridors are doing fine as well. in my next report, we'll take a look at the bw parkway at 5:09. a $2 billion loss ever the nation's largest bank tops this morning's your money segment. >> unbelievable. after what we went through in 2008 this is happening again. here's jessica talking about jpmorgan chase. >> that's exactly right. this is not what investors wanted to hear after the bell. of course we just snapped two six-day losing streak, the worst since august.

stocks were actually making some gains and then they found jpmorgan chase was putting together a last-minute conference call to tell investors it lost about $2 billion in just the last six weeks. the losses are being taken on a series of bad trades that were supposed to help protect the bank, a hedge on other investments during difficult time. c.e.o. jamie dimon blames the losses on, quote, many errors, sloppiness, and bad judgment, but critics are already saying these investments are akin to gambling and are pointing the finger at jpmorgan's culture and leadership. >> the difference between jamie dimon around the guy making book on the corner on the horses is jamie wears a good suit. he's not interested in making loans. he's interested in taking your deposits and gambling with them. he just gambled and loss. >> jpmorgan could face an additional $1 billion in losses in the second quarter because world markets have been so

volatile. there is also the possibility the company can offset some of these losses by about a billion dollars with gains in other areas. jpmorgan is saying the company is still profitable. of course big question marks in the minds of vin east ares this morning -- of investors this morning. what will happen the next few weeks and what will other banks do because of these problems? investors hate uncertainty. they're sending stocks lower. jpmorgan's stocks were down about 6% in after hours trading while other banks took a 2% haircut. aish yandz and -- asian and european markets seeing red arrows. the dow up about 20 points before the announcement was making snapping the six-day losing streak standing at 12,855. nasdaq off by a pound. s&p 500 up a few points. >> anything happening in -- any reports coming out that could sort of soften the blow for the opening bell today?

>> probably not. i mean, jpmorgan chase is going to be the central focus for wall street. it is probably going to reinvigorate the calls for the vocal rule which is supposed to stop risky trade. this is going to be bad news for the banking sector who was hoping these regulations wouldn't come to be. >> look what they did. talk about something else in the next half-hour? >> there's a new diet drug that could potentially coming to market for the first time in ten years. so we'll be talking about that. >> thanks, jess. to other news. life in prison without the possibility of parole. that's the sentence for cyril williams, the man who shot and killed trooper wesley brown. brown was working security at appleby's in forestville in june 2010 when he tossed williams out of the restaurant for disorderly conduct. williams came back and murdered brown in retaliation. williams plans to appeal. a virginia judge has tossed out drunk driving charges

against the former head of the federal aviation administration. he made his decision after watching some video of randy babbitt's left turn that prompted police to pull him over in the first place. flaherty said the officer had no good reason to make the stop. the 65-year-old babbitt resigned his post in december after his arrest had become public. better safe than smoldering. metro is buying 95 new buses. they'll replace older buses, two of which recently caused fire. both fires caused by high pressure hoses that either came loose or were not properly installed. metro has fired an employee it says it caused a train to derail last month at the rosslyn station. no one was hurt but the hitch caused big delays. 5:05. graduation season is already here for a lot of college students. when it comes to high schools, they'll get their diplomas in a few weeks. >> except for those who failed to make the grade and drop out instead. 9 news now reporter delia goncalves found one young man on that road until he recently turned his life around.

this is a truly inspiring story. >> it's a great story. when you talk to this young man, i was shocked. my jaw dropped. at just how he can manage to keep a positive attitude considering that the odds are really stacks against this young man. high school dropouts are a major strain on our whole economic system costing taxpayers nearly $350 billion each year in lost wages, taxable income, health, welfare, never mind if they end up going to prison. thankfully christian hall will not be one of those kids despite drugs, violence, poverty, and reading at a first grade level just one year ago. he is still struggling to overcome but he's made great strides, especially in reading with some help of some adults who intervened and saw potential in this young man. >> i grew up in poverty. i don't want to live in poverty anymore. i just want to help my family out and have children one day

and make sure they go to school so they can do better than i'm doing. >> christian remains focused on school despite ongoing violence and drug use inside his own home. coming up at 5:0, we'll take a walk through -- 5:30. we'll take a walk through his old neighborhood. it really is an inspiring story. >> he was on a first grade reading level till last year. how did he get promoted to this point? that's always the question. >> we'll explore that a little later on in the morning. and we'll have a guest and talk more about that we can indict the school system because he clearly was passed on and made it to the 11th grade in high school reading at a first grade level. he's not unique. many students at anacostia high school have very low reading levels below third grade so it's a major epidemic, a huge problem in ward eight and the district. >> thank you. look forward to hearing more about christian. two sisters are safe after police catch up to their

and helmet manufacturer rydell failed to protect players from long-term brain injuries. monk says he suffers from memory loss and headaches as a result of the concussions he sustained in his 16-year n.f.l. career. about 150 are ex-redskins that are part of these lawsuits including mark ripen. yesterday i spoke with some other former players to get them to weigh in. >> there must be some things because i know art -- [indiscernible] do i think the n.f.l. knew about the concussions? >> yes, of course. we all got concussions. do i think they might have known it for a long time? i think they probably did. >> the redskins yesterday kicking off their 80th anniversary at redskins park. the unveiling of this year's jerseys. they are kind of a modern take on the 1937 redskins jersey.

but despite his reading challenges and an addictive father and poverty, he has overcome some obstacles and he's set to graduate in just a couple of weeks. this is amazing. >> when you go through the list, reading at a first grade level, crack addicted father and then poverty, it's just -- the odds were stacked against this kid. >> it's like a wall. >> it's amazing at his young age 17 years old he's able to really overcome. >> find it from within somehow. >> somehow. really remarkable young boy. christian's story unfortunately though is not unique. it's like many kids around the country, grew up in a rough neighborhood surrounded by drugs and violence. even though he attended school regularly, nearly every day, he never learned to read until now. >> my teachers at thomas jefferson high school-- >> reading "the washington post" is not an easy feat, especially for someone overcoming a reading

disability. but 17-year-old christian hall gets help with tutors from the rich program, resources for inner city children. he's now set to graduate from anacostia high where he's had perfect attendance at a school struggling to fill most classroom seats but his journey to his desk and his future goal have not been an easy one. >> reporter: this is the old neighborhood? >> yes. >> reporter: what are the nicknames? >> bang bang. >> reporter: christian grew up in one of anacostia's most motorruous neighborhoods. you like being back in this neighborhood? >> no. >> reporter: why? >> it's -- there's no prove energy around here. >> reporter: during our brief walk threw, christian often looked over his shoulder visibly uncomfortable in a neighborhood full of drugs and violence he always stood out. >> because i want to live -- i want to live till i get older. i don't want to die a a young age. >> reporter: christian and the eight members of his family only lived here in this building for about a year where his father smoked crack in the

house, his brother consistently stole from him and even though those issues still remain, they left the neighborhood under threat of their lives. >> when we stayed in virginia, i lived -- i stayed with my friend to go to school. >> reporter: the family bounced around among several different hotels before relocating. it's safer now but by no means a positive family environment. his father still smoking crack. brother still stealing. is that hard to talk about? >> yes. >> reporter: is it still happening? >> yes. >> reporter: does it make mommy uncomfortable for -- does it make home uncomfortable for you? >> something like that. i can't -- eventually i'm not going to be around it. >> reporter: but it's your family. >> some people just love family from a distance. >> 17 years old. some people love their family from a distance. christian, he has drive no doubt but his success would not

be possible without some key adults who stepped into his life, including from the tutor program. we're going to introduce you to that program and the folks who are really committed to helping kids like christian in that community. >> because you can't do it by yourself no matter how focused. he needed someone and found them. >> thank you. doctors are trying to save a toddler found unconscious in a bathtub in laurel, maryland. family members found the little girl last night at a home near montrose avenue. they purchased cpr on the child with instructor from a 911 dispatcher president at last -- dispatcher. at last word the girl is in critical condition. the suspect in a series of hammer attacks is expected in court later this morning for a mental observation hearing. 19-year-old michael davis already faced charges in one of the attacks but now he's been charged with murder in another attack. a man from denver was found killed in d.c.'s petworth neighborhood on april 24.

davis has two older brothers, both of which play in the national football league. officials in louisa, county, virginia will hold a goodbye ceremony at thomas jefferson elementary. the school was heavily damaged in last year's earthquake and will be demolished. a new school will be built, the total cost expected to be $13.5 million. some of the money will come from the federal government. students have been attending classes at another county elementary school since the quake. time for your money report. a lot to talk about. >> jessica starts us off with big news from a tiny drug maker. >> 18 thumbs up for the first new diet drug in over a decade. fda advisors have approved 18-4 to recommend the agency approved sales of the drug. this could be the first approved product ever. the fda will finish its review

by late june of this drug. the diet drug was rejected in 2010, very serious possible risks here, heart risks, other risks include tumors and raising blood pressure. research has shown that people taking the drug had modest weight loss. a government watchdog group wants to overhaul some mortgage- related fees. the consumer transportation bureau says it might ban origination fees that vary with the size of the loan. it wants lenders to charge the same flat fee for all morning loans. they keep dropping. mortgage rates hit their lowest levels since records first started being kept in the 1950's. freddie mac says the rate on a 30-year fixed loan is down to 3.83%. i remember when i had a 7% loan. it was a good rate. but despite the cheaper mortgage rates, home sales fell across the board. my parents had a 15% mortgage rate when they first bought their home. >> wow.

level. but all of us who know stresses, these women wear so many hats. as women business owners, we try to get it done no matter what. then we go home to our mini roles at moms and wives and we start another part of our day. >> the super woman. >> oh, yes. our days tend to end into the next day. so burning candle at both ends, that really was the catalyst for bringing business and wellness together under one roof. >> because that's unique. we like the idea of networking and that's important because how has it been for women business owners in the economy that we've had and are experiencing now? >> it's been extremely tough. as business owners when decisions are made to cut back, we're affected. we're affected directly. so cuts take place and whether this is your bread and butter,
