67 by noon. so it's chilly now but we'll have a nice afternoon. just a bit of a breeze at times with high 70 to 75. this morning we're looking at the satellite and radar and with rain moving away through new england, behind it high pressure is coming in. so lots of clear skies and lots of sunshine expected all day long. cold this morning. not just chilly but cold in spots. winchester is 37. there could seen be a touch of frost across parts of northern frederick county,. temperature of 37 here so grab the jackets early. you won't need them early on. look at the highs, 70 to 75. let's go to monika santami, 6:00 a.m. are we doing friday light? we really are. even at 6:00 i'm happy to say. i'm keeping my fingers crossed it stays this way. things are looking great all around town. we had a couple of minor incidents early on. all cleared for the morning rush hour and things are looking fine out of college park all the way west into bethesda. we're going to take a live look

outside and show you what it looks like to prove it to you. here's what it looks like at georgia avenue. again beltway is running smoothly both loops north of town. let's go back over to the map. this time we're going to head west coming in from sterling on the dulles toll road or manassas to centreville. that will be a slow stretch for you. beyond that we're fine. we'll take a live look in centreville and just a few brake lights here but beyond that we're good into fairfax and falls church on 66. in my next report, we'll go over to the bw parkway and route 50 at 6:11. back to you. >> thank you, monika. let's get a check of some of the stories happening today. metro is going to unveil a memorial plaque for the nine people killed in the 2009 redsline crash. -- redline crash. it will be installed near the site of the crash. vincent gray and relatives of the people killed are going to be there for today's ceremony. an exhibit featuring patents received by steve jobs goes on display at the smithsonian. he received over 300 in his

lifetime. the exhibit is on display through july 8 at the smithsonian's riply center on the national mall. look up in the sky. it's -- no, it's a plane. a boeing 787 dreamliner is leaving town. it's been on display at national airport and now heading for texas. it's impressive to see in the air. a happy ending to a frightening story this morning. two sisters kidnapped in tennessee are found alive and well. >> the man police say took them and killed their mother and sister is now dead. andrew spencer has more on this developing story. >> reporter: sisters alexandria and kyliyah bain are now recovering after being taken from their tennessee home last late month. adam mayes, the man accused of kidnapping them and killing their mother and older sister is now dead. police found mayes in union county, mississippi thursday night. mayes who was on the f.b.i.'s ten most wanted list killed himself. >> preliminary reports indicate mayes shot himself in the head and was later pronounced dead at an area hospital.

>> reporter: the girls were also taken to the hospital as a precaution. a law enforcement source tells cnn the sisters are suffering from dehydration and exhaustion but appear okay. mayes' sternl says the girls -- sister-in-law says she's happy the girls are final but disappointed for mayes. >> he took the sissy way out. as long as the girls are safe. >> reporter: mayes' wife teresa is also facing charges. she told police she went with him to dump the bodies in mississippi. teresa mayes' mother says her daughter is mentally disabled and wouldn't have done anything on her own. >> if teresa had anything to do with it, she was forced. >> reporter: right now it isn't known what mayes' motive may have been for the murders and kidnappings but his mother-in- law says he may have believed that alexandria and kyliyah

were his daughters. >> the body of mayes will be taken to jackson, mississippi today. that's where authorities will conduct an autopsy. the only survivor of a fiery crash involving a stolen car in chevy chase has filed a lawsuit. 18-year-old rico richardson was a passenger in that stolen car with three other people last march. his attorney says montgomery county police officers were negligent and purposely rammed their cruiser into the stolen car on chevy chase circle. >> that pursuit ended in a fiery collision that injured our client emotionally, physically, and otherwise and also unfortunately prematurely took the lives of three young men. >> richardson is suing for $10 million. montgomery county police contend officers did not ram the stolen vehicle but say the driver lost control and struck the tree. riders of metro's red line are hoping for a smoother morning. there was a problem with the third rail yesterday between silver spring and takoma which

caused delays 15 minutes or more of the commute. metro spent the day fixing the problem and said things should be back to normal today. to the beltway in virginia. crews spent the day patching up some potholes. there were big ones, a whole pack of them opened up yesterday morning on the inner loop in annandale. that's where a lot of work is being done on the express lanes project. we don't know if that played a role in creating potholes but again they were fixing them. jessica doyle is watching your money and in solidarity with the other moms, she's watching your mother's day. >> she's trying to watch some keys to a brand new sports car apparently. >> i'm not saying you'll have to buy mom a car for mother's day. you've got to do what you've got to do. >> thanks for that. >> but if you're thinking about buying mom a car for mother's day, there are -- there is new research out there which shows which cars are popular with mom and you can negotiate some pretty deep discounts. true car.com came out with a

report and here are the rankings. number one, the honda crv, number two, knee sas ultima, number four, the subaru outback, number five, the honda pilot and we're moving on to six through ten, the volkswagen jetta came in at number 6, number 8, the honda accord, 9, honda civic and ten the nissan sentra. nissan had three vehicles in the top ten. odyssey ranked the highest among moms with two or more kids because it's pretty big but you're also going to want to consider price. these were the cars sold with the biggest negotiated discount. the honda odyssey came in first. it had an average discount of 2,453 but you've got to keep in mind it also had the second highest price tag. the honda pilot was next with an average discount of $1,916

new efforts to turn around the dropout rate in the district. >> there are some adults that are helping at risk students get their diplomas. this is a great story. delia goncalves joins us with more on the program. >> we talked about christian hall all morning long. is he a really remarkable kid who had a lot of drive but can't do it alone. like you said, andrea, it really takes a village. that's not just which cheesy slogan. it's absolutely true. this kid made it thanks to people who moved into his life. he was reading at a first grade level just one year ago. now the people and the program that have helped turn his grades and christian's life around. >> this word is -- >> reporter: you can call it a failure of our school system. a 17-year-old high school

senior living in poverty- stricken ward 8 just learning how to read for the first time. >> i was in a state of shock. they said there were about a dozen kids reading a a very low -- reading at a very low level, third grader or less than that. >> reporter: that's why resources for inner city children or rich moved in to institute store -- tutor students literally turning lives around. >> questionsian was relent -- christian was relentless about making sure he achieved. every adult in the building wanted to make sure we supported him. >> i get a text message from a child who needs money, a parent who is addicted. thankfully we're connected to resources to can help. >> reporter: christian had threats against his family's life, an april deducted father about -- an addicted father but now he's set to graduate and

within weeks and it only happened thanks to some committed adults who stepped in. >> you can't put a price tag on anything like that. when you see them graduate, that's the best part. >> joining me now is paul from the rich program, the executive director. the last sound bite was you talking about the reward that you get out of watching these kids graduate coming from nothing and then like christian having these goals. tell me about the commitment that you've made. you've moved into ward 8 so that speaks a lot about your commitment. why do you do this? >> i think we have a moral obligation to do this. we need to get as involved as possible and we need to prove that these people are worth our time and our energy. i mean, these are great kids and great families that we're working with. >> tell me, you said it costs

about $5,000 to $7,000 just to tutor a student like christian for about a year. so how widespread is this problem? it's a pretty big one so far that we know of. >> i would say it's a two-year process over which we can teach a child how to read. we're hiring expert reading tutors who really can get at the problem quickly and show really good results. but it is a widespread problem. there are a lot of kids arriving in high school way, way below the level that they should be at. >> when you first went to anacostia, they gave you a list and said we have a dozen students. tell me about that. >> we were in shock. we basically introduced ourselves and said what do you need for us to help you with. they said well, we have this list of kids who are at a kind kindergarten and first grade left. it was shogging, -- shocking, appalling. but we got past of how did we get there. the ones who came to school like christian, you have to

take your hat off to christian, he makes such a great effort and it's mostly about him. >> how can folks help? because you are a small organization, only nine years, and one and a half years in anacostia high school. you need a lot of help and you're tackling a huge problem. >> right. we don't have government assistance. we rely on individual donations and private donation. if you just want to give a little bit, you can be part of it. you can be listening to what we're doing, hearing about what we're doing and we're all in this together. >> thanks so much for joining us. we're going to link your website to our website wusa9.com. coming up at 6:30, we'll have more about christian hall and the work paul has done with christian and his future goals. back to you. >> thank you, delia. i love the word "rich" describing what is happening because a rich resource out there with these young minds.

it's 45 in baden and columbia. clear skies, lots of it off the capitol dome. temperature 53 at reagan national. high pressure is building in today but our problems for late in the weekend monday, a front is here. you can see the showers in the dakotas. you can clearly see low pressure spinning in west texas. heavy showers and storms east texas, louisiana. that heads our way late in the weekend. with a little luck, we're going to stay dry till monday. high pressure is going to build in. that will help get the winds lower and lower. in fact, lighter winds tonight will drop us back into the 40s in many areas. as this high slides off to the southeast on saturday, our winds turn to the south and we will see temperatures respond to near 80 in a few spots on saturday. there's the moisture saturday afternoon into kentucky. that's why north and west may see a shower by sunday afternoon. here's the forecast. today 73, a little breezy. 40s and 50s tonight. a beautiful saturday.

. welcome back. chilly out there. we have some spots in the upper 30s. most in the 40s, low 50s. you'll need the jacket for consume of hours but by noon, already in the upper 60s. a little bit of a breeze but nothing like yesterday. 3:00 71. we'll top out about 73. drop back to 71 by 6:00. andrea? >> thank you, howard. we're five weeks into the baseball season and the nationals are still holding on to first place in the nl east. >> so far so good. they begin a three-game series with the reds in cincinnati. they wrapped up their series with pittsburgh last night. stephen strasburg amazing once again. he struck out 13 pirates in six innings, including seven in a row. the nats used the long ball to score their runs. actually got it done with the bats, too. nationals win 3-2 which snaps a three-game losing streak. thursday camden yards, orioles did something no

american league team has ever double. the first three batters back-to- back-to-back all hit solo home runs. they all went deep. baltimore won the game early against texas 6-5 but the o's lost a night cap 7-3. we're waiting to find out what an arbitrator will decide in the case of the redskins vs. the n.f.l. they lost cap space for violating rules in 2010. the skins have denied any wrongdoing and did it again at a hearing thursday. the redskins also held an 80th anniversary gala. the team was founded in boston in 1932. it moved to washington five years later. a lot of former players and coaches attended including joe jacoby. >> you look at the history of the redskins and 80 years, it's awesome. >> it's not just that you dwell on the history but you remember the history and respect the

checking the cameras here at new hampshire avenue. still looking good on the outer loop off and on into silver spring. will you hit some brake lights. in my next report we'll go to the east side of town at 6:43. >> thank you, monika at 6:32. we're watching your money. in you troubles on wall street. jpmorgan chase says it suffered $2 billion in losses. jessica doyle is here to tell us just what happened. i thought they had profits last quarter. >> they did. here is what happened. the market closed yesterday. jpmorgan chase called together a surprise conference call of investors. the nation's biggest bank lost $2 billion in just the last six weeks. so how could this possibly happen? it turns out jpmorgan has a complicated series of hedges in place. the concept is if one segment of the market tanks, another will do well. these $2 billion in losses come from bets made by a trader known as the london whale and there were hints these bets were going bust in the last earnings call.

at the time c.e.o. jamie dimon called them a tempest and a tea pot. now it looks like that tempest could lose jpmorgan an additional $1 billion over the second quarter so we could be looking at $3 billion from all this at the end of the day. >> is this bad enough that they're going to say i need a government bailout? what does it mean? >> probably not. probably the situation is for the entire banking sector there will be problems, not that jpmorgan is going to go under. it says it's profitable. but this definitely raises uncertainty in the minds of investors about the entire banking sector. there's nothing wall street hates more than uncertainty. that's why shares of jpmorgan dropped 6% in after hours trading. global markets have not been happy dacht i think one irony of the situation is the bets that blew up for jpmorgan were optimistic. the economy is improving. they just didn't turn out quickly for the bank.

>> again we're asking how did we get in this situation? i thought in 2008 after the big debacle rules were put in place. >> 2008 everything implodes. the world goes to heck in a hand basket. there is a regulation that is called the vocle rule. what it hopes to do is limit the risky trades that a lot are say is basically gambling. but it isn't the rule of the land. a lot of people are debating what it means, what it does. this revelation is what it's probably going to do is give ammunition who people who want the rules to have real teeth. so that's likely to impack the entire banking sector if this is a real crackdown. traders and bafergers on wall street do not want the rule. when it comes to the economy, a lot of us think

things aren't getting any better. a new associated press poll finds 22% of americans think over the last month the economy has improved. 20% say it's gotten worse and 66% believe it's pretty much stayed the same. when it comes to president obama and how he handles the economy, we're pretty evenly divided. 46% of americans approve of how he is handling the financial issues. 52% disapprove with 38% of those strongly disapproving. the numbers are pretty much unchanged since february. now to another big political issue. president owe obama's support for same-sex marriage. cnn reports vice president joe biden has since apologized to the president for putting him in a tough spot. the vice president announced his support for same-sex

marriage on television last sunday and it's believed that forced the president to announce his support earlier than he had intended. maryland congressman steny hoyer says he now supports same- sex marriage as well. he released a statement saying, quote, i believe that extending the definition of marriage to committed relationships between two people irrespective of their sex, is the right thing to do and will not in any way undermine the institution of marriage so important to our society. several years ago, however, mr. hoyer spoke out against same- sex marriage. metro is announcing some big changes after a string of safety concerns on its trains and buses. the agency is purchasing 96 new buses after two of them caught fire recently. both fires were caused by high pressure hoses which failed. metro's g.m. believes replacing the buses is the safest option. we did not want to-- >> we did not want to take the

risk. >> metro says it fired an employee that caused the train to derail last month at the rosslyn stop. no one was hurt but the hitch caused major delays. new this morning, we have been bringing you a very uplifting story about turning around the high school dropout and turning around him being one of the statistics in this especial dependic. one student quits high school every 26 seconds. >> this man has been able to maintain and improve himself. it's an amazing story. >> it really s. he is 17 years old. he was just talking to paul pettiman who was or guest, part of the rich program helping him. he has really risen above a dad who smokes crack in the house, a brother who steals from him, death threats, odds stacked against this young man. it really is inspiring. just a year ago he read at a first grade level. the odds stacked against him

but thankfully he's found a way out. and that is mainly through the help of a nonprofit tutoring program called resources for inner city children or rich for short. the group helps motivate students like christian in ward eight so they can glad yate. christian, a senior at anacostia high, has plans to attend montgomery community college for film and tv production. he's not going to be a reporter. he's already writing a screenplay for his first movie. >> reporter: when you write, what do you feel? >> i feel like i'm something. when i write, i never thought i could write like that. >> he says he feels like a god. he writes ideas that he never thought he could write down before. no doubt he still needs some help reaching his goals beyond high school. the program continues to work

with students serving as mentors to help them. clearly there's a problem in the system when a kid is a senior in high school and just learning to read. first grade level. and he is one of a dozen at least at anacostia high school. however, under the new principal at anacostia, dr. roberts, they've really made some great strides. they go out into the community. they talk to parents. they get the kids to come to the school. the principal said listen, we know parents aren't going to come to us so we're going to go to them. >> rich is a small organization. they can use some help. >> absolutely. paul pettiman, the director, one person and two others. it takes $5,000 to $7,000 just to tutor one student for two years. unfortunately sometimes our school system can't sit down with a kid for a one on one tutoring program. so you really need these other

outside nonprofits to move in and do the work. not to say that, you know, our dcps school system certainly doesn't have their challenges and is doing a lot of good work but you need a lot of outside effort. >> what's interesting, it sounds like a lot of money the $5,000 to $7,000 but compare that versus the investment you have to make to keep someone confined in jail or something because they didn't have the education to move forward. >> and we went through those stats, that they can't get jobs, a strain on our economy, $350 billion annually with all these dropouts who are in jail as you said. it pays to invest right now. >> we do have to go. our producer is wrapping us up. what you're saying and your report cool schools. >> go to wusa9.com if you want to help out the rich program. >> there's a chance. howard says we're in for a

welcome back to 9news now. time saver traffic. we're going to take a live look first from sky 9 on the inbound side of i-66. it was slow out of centreville and then off and on as you head toward fairfax. this is what it's going to look like for you. just the brake lights. no big incidents to report. honestly i thought it was going to be heavy early this morning and then everyone was going to head back out for mother's day weekend but it looks like it's heavy later in the rush hour. but luckily the lanes are open. let's go over to our maps now. on the north side of town no problems to report here as you travel from college park into silver spring. it's just going to be a bit heavy toward georgia avenue. if you're planning to head north on 95 toward baltimore, new york getting out of town for the weekend, you're going

a little breezy. cool again tonight. we'll be in the 40s and 50s with light wind. upper 70s, even near 80 on saturday afternoon. a gorgeous start to the weekend. sunday looks good, too. around 80 for mother's day. maybe a shower late north and west and unsented for the -- unsettled for the first part of next week. temperatures mainly in the 70s. mike, good friday morning to you. >> you're not kidding. it smells amazing here in the kitchen. sons and daughters and dads, don't forget this sunday is mother's day. one of the popular things to do of course is take her out to eat. whether it's brunch, lunch or dinner and how about the cheese cake factory. they're here to help us celebrate a little early. this is chef rick from the cheese cake factory. is this a pancake or crepe? >> for over 30 years the cheese cake factory has been known for its extensive menu, over 200 items which we make from scratch. with mother's day right around the corner, we thought we would share with you our delicious

ricotta pancakes. >> it's wonderful. what's in the bowl so far? >> butter milk, vanilla, vegetable oil and two fresh eggs which we've mixed together. we're going to add the ricotta cheese because it gives the pancake a moist, rich texture. we're also going to add a little bit of sugar right here. and some lemon zest. we use this tool here called a microplain to really get that fresh lemony essence. >> it smells fantastic. >> we're going to fold these ingredients together. we don't really want to overmix them. >> so it's ricotta cheese, lemon zest, butter milk is also in there. >> yes, sir. now we're going to add our dry ingredients. we have flour, baking powder and a little bit of salt. we add the baking powder because it gives the pancake that light, airy texture we're looking for. >> what happens after that? >> we have this finished product. we have our batter right here. what i've done here is i've added about four ounces of batter to the flat top here.
