. hello and thank you for joining us. i'm jc hayward. the country's largest bank admitted to a massive loss on a trading bet that went wrong. alexis christoforous reports on the blunder by jpmorgan chase.

>> reporter: jpmorgan chase's surprise $2 billion loss sent shock waves through wall street. there were errors, sloppiness, and bad judgment. >> in hindsight the new strategy was flawed, complex, poorly reviewed, poorly executed and poorly monitored. >> reporter: the giant loss came from a trading portfolio of complex derivatives. one trader known as the london whale designed it from the uk office. the idea was to balance risk but the strategy backfired. the news sent shares of jpmorgan chase sharply lowered. bank stocks dropped in both europe and the u.s. the office that managed jpmorgan's losing portfolio was betting that the economic recovery would continue so last month's market volatility was a disaster for the investment. dimon says the bank remains profitable but admitting the mistake was egregious. >> the portfolio has proven to

be riskier, more volatile and less effective an economic hedge than we thought. >> reporter: dimon said the bank is learning from the mistake and will fix it but admitted it's a major embarrassment. jpmorgan's blunldzer has attracted the attention of the securities and exchange commission and fueling new debate on whether wall street need as much tougher crackdown. alexis christoforous, cbs news, wall street. let's talk about the elections because voters are calling the economy the number one issue in this election. but president obama has been talking about the same-sex marriage issue for days. and republican candidate mitt romney is responding to a report that he bullied a classmate in high school. randall pinkston reports now from the white house that both candidates are trying to get back on message. >> reporter: president obama and his republican challenger mitt romney are trying to bring the campaign focus back to the economy. the. is headed to reno, nevada to

address the housing crisis. after a record setting fund- raiser at actor george clooney's hollywood mansion. tickets to the star studded event caused $40,000 and netted the obama campaign $15 million. gl. at a fund raising stop in seattle where the cameras were allowed in, the. talked about -- the president talked about his administration's attempts to recover from the financial crisis. >> we saw manufacturers start to invest in america again consistently adding jobs for the first time since the 1990's. businesses got back to basics. created over four million jobs in the last 26 months. >> reporter: republican presidential hopeful mitt romney is trying to make the case that he is the best candidate to turn around the economy. he hopes to stick to that message today and move beyond questions about some alleged misbehavior in high school. the allegations stem from a "washington post" report that romney helped pin down a fellow student and cut his hair 49 years ago.

romney says he doesn't remember the incident, but apologized to anyone he may have harmed. >> we have always looked at presidents and their kind of origin stories and stories from their youth that have kind of told us something about their character. and that's why this is potentially dicey for him. >> reporter: romney is working to put that issue to rest, but his political opponents may have other ideas. randall pinkston, cbs news, the white house. >> republican mitt romney is talking about jobs today at a factory in charlotte, north carolina. the president is meeting with a family in reno, nevada this afternoon, to discuss efforts to help homeowners pay their mortgages. first lady michele obama will be speaking today at virginia tech's commencement ceremony. more than 5,000 graduates and relatives have packed the stadium in blacksburg, virginia for the historic event. the first lady also plans to speak at north carolina a&t on

saturday and oregon state on june 17. right now d.c. accident investigators are restricting a crash that sent one man to the hospital. a work truck hit the man on north capitol street near 8th street northwest. the driver did stop. the unidentified victim was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. doctors are trying to save a toddler who was found unconscious in a bathtub in laurel, maryland. family members found the little girl last night at their home on 10th street near montrose avenue. they performed cpr on the child with instructions from a 911 dispatcher. at last word the girl was listed in critical condition. police are investigating what happened. the hunt for adam mayes came to a dramatic end last night two weeks after he disappeared with 12-year-old

alexandria bain and her 8-year- old sister. mayes killed the girls' mother and older sister last week. authorities moved on mayes and the two remaining girls in a heavily wooded area behind a mississippi church. alexandria was spotted first. then mayes. >> we immediately issued commands to adam mayes to show his hand. mayes pulled a semiautomatic pistol from his waist band and shot himself in the head. >> emergency responders brought the fugitive back to life twice before he died at a local hospital. the girls were suffering from exposure, dehydration and poison ivy. they were taken into the hospital for treatment as a precaution. still to come when 9news now continues, the washington redskins are celebrating a huge milestone. we're going to take you to the

american forces are going after the terrorist group that tried to bomb an american-bound airliner this week. the terrorists failed because a double agent infiltrated the group and foiled that attack.

susan mcginnis has more. >> reporter: u.s. launched air strikes in yemen killed as many as seven militants. it was the second attack against al qaeda in the arabian peninsula in less than a week. last weekend a drone attack killed fahd al-quso. he was also wanted for bombing of the u.s.s. kohl in 2000. it's the latest blow totter i.r.s. group. earlier this week -- blow to the terrorist group. earlier this week a double agent foiled a plot to bomb an airliner. he handed the bomb over to the u.s. and ld told officials where to locate fahd al-quso. >> this was one of the most sow fest indicated operations we -- sophisticated operations we ever run. >> reporter: but the operation was nearly blown when someone leaked information about it to

the associated press, forcing agents to wrap it up ahead of schedule. senator joseph lieberman, chairman of the homeland security committee says he believes the leak interrupted parts of the operation that were not yet completed. >> they did something really harmful to our national security, and hoip we catch them. >> reporter: defense secretary leon panetta says the leak not only hurt this operation but could make it harder to recruit future inform participants. >> to be able -- informants. >> to be able to do that effective, you have to protect them. >> reporter: the agent is probably hiding with a new identity, according to experts. >> the associated press held off reporting about the bomb plot until officials at the white house gave assurances that the operation was over. coming up next, howard has the forecast. >> jc, after a chilly start, it turned out to be a beautiful afternoon. a bit breezy and some good news also with the allergy update. that's come in. not great but it's gotten better as the tree pollen has

safety concerns on its trains and buses. the agency is purchasing 96 new buses after two caught fire recently. both fires war caused by high pressure hoses which failed. metro's general manager believes replacing the buses is the safest thing to do. >> we didn't want to put them back on the road because we did not want to tat risk. >> metro says -- want to take the risk. >> metro says it fired the employee that caused the derailment last month at the rosslyn stop no one was injured but that hitch caused some big delays. metro will be single tracking trains on three rail lines this weekend. from 10:00 tonight until monday morning. on the red line work will be performed between the takoma and forest glen stations as well as the van ness and dupont circle stations. on the orange line, work will take place between the eastern market and chervely stations --

cheverly stations. and on the blue line, work is going to be conducted between eastern market and addison road. we're waiting to find out what an arbitrator will decide in the case of the redskins versus the n.f.l. the team lost cap for supposedly violating rules in 2010. the redskins denied any wrongdoing at a hearing on thursday. the redskins also held an 80th anniversary gala in ashburn, virginia. the team was founded in boston in 1932. it moved to washington five years later. a lot of former players and coaches attended, including joe jacoby. >> you look at the history of the redskins and 80 years, it's awesome. >> it's not just that you dwell on the history but you remember the history and respect the history. it's good to see a lot of the guys from the past. >> also as part of the 80th anniversary celebration, the redskins unveil some throwback

uniforms. it's a new take on the old 1937 uniform and these will be worn for two games this season. with high school graduation right around the corner, we wanted to remind you about the thousands of youngsters who are dropping out of high school. not only are they risking their future, they are a financial drain on our system because they are costing taxpayers billions of dollars each year. but one local nonprofit is helping to change that one student at a time. delia goncalves explains. >> i don't know that word. >> reporter: you can call it a failure of our school system, a 17-year-old high school senior living in poverty stricken ward eight just learning how to read for the first time. >> i was in a state of shock when we first visited anacostia. they said there were about a dozen kids reading a a very low level, third grader or less

than that. >> reporter: that's why resources for inner city children or rich moved in to tutor students at anacostia high school, literally turning lives around, including christian hall. >> you can't put a price tag or anything like that on that type of reward. >> questionsian, you can see -- christian, you can see he believings in himself. every adult in the building wanted to make sure we supported him. >> reporter: he's now set to graduate from anacostia high where he's had perfect attendance at a school struggling to fill most classroom seats. but his journey to this point and his future goal has not been an easy one. >> reporter: what are the nicknames. the neighborhood? >> bang bang. >> reporter: he grew up in one of the most notorious neighborhoods. they only lived here in this building for a about a year where his father smoked crack in the house, his brother consistently stole from him.

chance later to say it. it's going to be a pretty good weekend around here. it looks like the rain we're expecting may actually hold off till sunday night, monday. so i think we could get through most if not all of this mother's day weekend dry. here's a look at your day planner on this friday afternoon. we've got sunshine out there. a little breezy, too. some gusts actually now at 29 at reagan national but yesterday we were gusting in the mid-30s. i think the winds will come down a little bit as we go through the afternoon. 5:00 temperature about 72. only looking at a high 73. maybe 74 in spots. then this evening with the winds relaxing, temperatures are going to relax as well. 65 by noone 9:00, clear skies. -- by 9:00, clear skies. might want to take a jacket or sweat shirt, just something light. overnight with the the lighter winds, temperatures once again could be in the low 40s in the cold spots to low 50s here in town. clear skies out there this morning. with the clear skies and colder air moving in, we actually dipped in the 30s in gaithersburg. same with culpeper.

winchester got to 37. la plata down to 42 along the bay. annapolis 51. in southern maryland, pax river was 50. right now at the noon hour, it's nice outside. temperatures 67 degrees at national with lower 60s here in the shenandoah valley. only 52 in oakland today. it's chilly there. mid-60s across the bay in easton and 67 up toward baltimore. check this picture out. your michael & son weather camera. not a cloud in the sky. bright sun on the capitol dope. the winds are off to the northwest at 17. the air is dried out. humidity only 27%. and looks like we are going to stay dry for a few days but things are going to change by monday. got a front up here. you can see the showers lining up minnesota back through south dakota. then in texas, this upper low yesterday was toward west texas, new mexico. it is actually spinning in northwest texas but look at the shower and storms down across the coast of louisiana. will bring heavy rains through louisiana, parts of mississippi and alabama and even kentucky and tennessee as we go through

the weekend. right now there's that storm in texas and the storm pulling away from new england so a lot of real estate in between those two storms. high pressure off to our west. as that builds in, that will relax the pressure gradient. the winds will calm down. looking at a nice evening out there. tonight high pressure overhead, light winds. that's why we could be looking at some low 40s in some of the colder suburbs. as we go through saturday, winds will become more southerly as this high pulls off shore. that will boost temps to the upper 70s. we may see a few high clouds here saturday afternoon, saturday night. sunday with even more of a southwesterly flow, that's going to help temps get toward the 08-degree mark going out toward -- 80-degree mark going out towards pittsburgh. may see a shower sunday afternoon. low 50s on the bay and about 52 here. and a beautiful -- i mean a gorgeous saturday. highs upper 70s to even around 80 or so as we look at the forecast, temperatures today will be in the low 70s. 70, 75. tonight 40s and 50s.
