>> hello, everybody. i'm bruce johnson. heart break for the caps tonight and the fans will hurt a lot more if the rangers win the stanley cup, because a lot of people, including our own dave owens thought the caps would be the team to advance tonight. dave, what happened? >> i got the two part right, i can tell thank you very much. six games have given us a pretty good indication of what to expect here. tight defense, low scoring. endurance necessary. that's how the capitals and rangers have played it. the teams flip-flopped the first six games. washington won on wednesday so caps fans hoping for a break-in trend tonight. let's get there. alex playing in his sixth game seven. first period, heck, first two minutes, brad richards let's it fly and it's 1-0 p. gets held up in the third. another ranger rushed, and it's 2-0. 38 seconds later though

caps with their squad out there. the goons getting it done. roman finds nylon. 2-1. but that light would end as the rangers holding on behind 22 saves from lunquist. the caps lose 2-1. what a finish. our kristen berset had a close- up view of the entire game. she joins us live from madison square garden. what a finale. >> yeah, this is my first time at madison square garden for a game. it is loud in here. i can see why this is such a difficult place to play a game. these rangers fans are unbelievable. but of course, they are. what a series this has been, as you said. back and forth the entire time. the cap season has had its roller coasters. a lot of high and low expectations, coaching change in there. so despite as they obviously are upset with the loss, that they're also just proud of

their season. >> it's a terrible feeling right now, you know. but all i can say, we do our best, and you know, it's for the best team i played. >> everybody had aspirations of something greater than what happened here tonight, and it's tough to fall a little short, and it's tough. i'm proud of our guys and how they competed. >> obviously at this point, we as a team had to do it all. you look at it, we gave ourselves a great chance. it's tough, a tough loss, especially. but what we can take out of it is that new york was a very good team. >> so now the caps are coming home. their season is over. what a heart break here in new york. we've still got more for you on this game coming up a little

especially the cutoff. >> the energy is awesome. >> reporter: call this a roller coaster of fandemonium. the rangers up by two when the caps scored their first goal of the night. but it wouldn't happen again. the look on these fans faces said it all as the final seconds of the game wind down. >> i would have liked to see the caps win, but they did a great job. >> i'm devastated but it's a good season. they did good. it's heartbreaking, but they played their hearts out. >> we love you. >> reporter: well, again, it was an exciting seven-game series. but as you heard, they say they'll wait for next year. back to you, bruce. >> ken, thanks for that. it was a picture-perfect day for a rocket launch. for hundreds of students across the country, they did just that. in a place called the plains,

virginia. surae chinn was there for the competition with all eyes on a team from texas featured on cbs evening news last night. >> 3, 2, 1, launch. >> reporter: the presidio rocket club sky-high dream is riding on this launch. >> pride, yes. >> reporter: how they got here took a fiery teacher passionate about helping them reach beyond their imagination. sheila interviewed by cbs's steve hartman last night. >> nobody even knows where we're at. >> reporter: all 100 teams are trying to outpace one another, and the rockets have to reach altitude of 800 feet. with a flight duration of 43 to 47 seconds, all the while carrying two raw eggs. after several rounds, team presidio and our own secondary

support for same-sex unions. gop candidate mitt romney received a standing ovation for his opposition to same sex marriage. >> marriage is a relationship between one man and one woman. [ cheers and applause ] >> the former massachusetts governor gave the commencement speech at liberty university at lynchburg, virginia today. he also spoke of family, christian values and shared moral convictions. his invitation to speak at the christian university caused some controversy among students critical of his mormon faith. an unprecedented tragedy, that's how boston officials are describing the death of three students killed in a minivan crash in new zealand. tonight, five other students, including one from the washington area are among the injured. the students are part of boston university's study abroad program. they were checking out sights where the lord of the rings movie was found when their van drifted off the road and rolled

over. one girl was hospitalized in new zealand with less serious injuries. four others, also hospitalized, one of them in critical condition. >> appears to have overcorrected, the driver, and the vehicle has gone into a roll and cart wheeled down the road. >> the driver of the van was among the survivors. boston university says it's providing counseling for students in helping families of the victims get down to new zealand. coming up on 9 news now this saturday night, a crackdown on noise this summer at popular atlantic coast destination. we'll have the details. also, one of the flying me linda's has -- melindas has his sights set on walking across niagara falls. that story coming up later. >> now it's time to put your pajamas on and he wrapped him all cozy warm in a towel. >> every week, 10-year-old olivia reads a story to her

>> overseen tonight, two suspected u.s. drone strikes that killed 11 al qaeda militants in southern yemen. there's no immediate word from u.s. authorities on whether washington was behind the attacks. in the past two weeks, suspected u.s. air strikes killed at least three senior al qaeda open tiftstives in southern -- operatives in southern yemen.

34-year-old michael o. smith of southeast washington was shot and killed. another man was also shot. he's being treated at a hospital. authorities have not released a description of the suspect, but they say the gunman was driving a blue mercury with maryland tags. they're offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in this case. some d.c. residents head to the polls on tuesday for a special election to fill the ward 5 council seat. that's the seat vacated by harry thomas, jr., who's awaiting word on what prison he'll be reporting to. thomas was sentenced to 38 months for stealing more than $350,000 from youth sports programs, then falsifying his tax returns. he was forced to resign from his ward 5 council seat, part of a plea bargain with prosecutors. on tuesday, the polls at ward 5 will be open from 7:00 in the morning until 8:00 at night. the winner will serve out the remainder of harry thomas' term

which runs through 2014. popular summer vacation destination for many in the washington area has a new noise law tonight. the mayor and town council in dewey beats, delaware, voted to tighten noise levels on businesses after-year round residents complained about disturbances from bars and restaurants. bar owners and managers could be fined $500 and they could be arrested for violations. restaurant owners say the limits are too restricted. coming up tonight on 9 news now, just a little stroll. >> i would say there's a good chance that i'll walk the entire 1200 feature and walk back. >> this little stroll is across niagara falls. it's on a high wire. also, we'll have the very latest on mother's day forecast. we're back in a moment.

over, losing it 2-1. we head back out to kristen berset who has been covering the locker room. i know it had to be heart break in there. >> reporter: it was a heart break in there. guys obviously defeated. they had such a roller coaster after season -- of a season. at the beginning of the season they were predicted to win the stanley cup. then we saw changes and saw ups and downs and the fact they had upset the defending champs and hanging in with the top seed, they so wanted to move on to this conference final. but of course, now, like you said, they're coming home and their season is over. >> we're doing our best, you know. it's probably the best team i've played. a great group of guys and atmosphere and everybody was -- it's unbelievable to play. i hope everybody's going to stay here for next year. it's hard. >> we're a great team.

we had a chance to win. we had opportunities. >> i think after seven games, they were a better team. >> everyone came to play at all times. everyone came to play every shift out there. and you know, you feel like you should get rewarded a little bit more. >> reporter: obviously a very some bear locker room. joining me now live, beat reporter for 106.7 the fan. sky, another great game but for the caps another missed opportunity. they were knocking on the door but lundquist wasn't letting them come in. >> no, he wasn't. the biggest thing that happened is rangers got on the board first. brad richard scored through task in front of holtby. they send up 0-6 in the playoffs giving up the first goal. that's not a good thing. that won't win you a lot of games. you talk about missed opportunities.

we could talk about the whole series where they had missed opportunities. they shouldn't have been playing tonight. they should have won game 5. that should have ended in game 6. they shouldn't have even been here. they missed a lot of open nets -- not open nets i'll say, but a lot of chances to score. tonight there was a time in the second period they had it in their offensive zone for two minutes and couldn't put it in. the whole series was missed opportunities for the capitals. >> brandon holtby still impressive through the playoff series as his first one. that first goal set a tone. >> yeah, he had 29 saves tonight. he played pretty solid. the first one, even the second one off a rebound. he probably shouldn't have had either of them. he played very well, especially for a rookie making his nhl playoff. he just didn't get a lot of help defensively like he's had. usually they're in the 20s. >> their season over, they have a lot to do.
