>> hello, everybody. i'm bruce johnson. tonight scores of law enforcement officers from around the country are in washington for the start of national law enforcement week. they were joined by national and local leaders to remember those who gave their lives in the line of duty tonight. ♪ [ music ] >> tonight, hundreds gathered at the law enforcement officers memorial in washington to remember the fallen police officers. this year, the heroes include maryland state trooper hunter. he was killed while chasing a speeding motorcycle in howard county. also derrick crowse, a police officer killed by a student from a nearby college during a routine traffic stop. names of the fallen were added to the memorial wall tonight. u.s. attorney eric holder was among those to speak. >> we come together to pay

together, because decades ago genoa allen gave up her son for adoption. she couldn't look for him, but that didn't stop the son from looking for his natural mother. surae chinn has the story you'll only see on 9. >> reporter: she was just 19 years old when she gave up her 2--week-wold son for adoption. they were reunited and today the rest of the family got to meet andy. the first mother's day jenoa has had with her firstborn son. >> this is andy. he's my firstborn. daniel, my second born. caleb, third. >> reporter: genoa allen's family picture has never been complete until now. >> we love you all so much. >> i love you, too. >> reporter: a few days ago, on a bridge in richmond, virginia, the birth city of her son, genoa allen met her firstborn again, a reunion that took 41 years. >> oh, my goodness. >> reporter: today is a rebirth

for andy and his new found family. >> this is your cousin roger. >> reporter: and four brothers he only met a couple of days ago. >> your first picture with all of us. >> i absolutely love it. >> reporter: so many firsts to make up for. >> i had my first basketball game with my brothers the other day. she gave me a key to the house was the first gift she gave me. >> i did, yeah. >> reporter: they've been apart for all of andy's life, but the two have an uncanny connection. listen to how they describe their meeting independently from each other. >> i've been trying to keep mystomach out of my throat all day long. >> my heart kind of fell out of my chest and my stomach went to my throat. >> reporter: for the rest of the family, it's been a smooth and happy reunion. daniel isn't even bothered he's been bumped to second eldest or how he puts it. >> i consider myself the second firstborn. because i've grown up being the oldest. i think it's just great to actually have an older brother now. >> it's been perfect.

>> i know. i have a mole right here. >> i didn't give you that mole. >> reporter: on a beautiful day, this is the picture- perfect they've always yearned for. >> my heart absolutely explodes. it does. i just love them all so much. >> reporter: andy regrets not contacting his mother sooner. he says there was a lot going on in his life. but about a year ago he felt it was the right time. and in this adoption, only andy could contact his mother. genoa allen always gave the adoption agency her contact information every time they moved, but the two don't dwell on lost years, because they all agree this is the way it was supposed to be. i'm surae chinn for 9 news now. turning elsewhere, tonight the nation's largest bank is preparing to accept the resignations of three executives involved in a botched strategy that caused j. p. morgan chase bank at least $2 billion in losses. that's according to several published reports tonight. the ceo of j. p. morgan admitted today on sunday talk

that his bank made a terrible, egregious mistake by dismissing worrisome signs earlier this year about the bank's trading strategy. >> we made a terrible egregious mistake, almost no excuse for it. the strategy we had was barely vetted, barely monitored. it should have never happened. it isn't like this company is jeopardized. we hurt ourselves and our credibility, yes. we've got to fully expect and pay the price for that. >> their mistake will likely boost efforts in washington to tighten regulations on the nation's biggest banks. more than three years after the financial crisis, some lawmakers say the banks industry is taking on too much risk. former wall street regulator agrees with that. >> j.p. morgan, chase and diamond are the brightest guys in the room. if they have this problem, god knows how many other people have these problems. this could lead us right back to where we were in 2008. >> lawmakers backing a financial overhaul bill set to go in effect this summer are

pushing for a final version that will prevent the kind of trading that led to the $2 billion morgan chase loss. the week ahead is going to be a really big one for facebook. tomorrow ceo mark zuckerberg turns 28. on friday he'll get even richer because the social networking company is expected to start selling stock to the public for the first time and begin trading on nasdaq. that ipo could vague and ambiguous facebook at nearly $100 billion making it worth more than disney, ford and craft foods. yahoo's ceo scott thompson is out looking for work. thompson agreed to resign after the company learned he listed a computer science degree on his resume that he did not earn. the internet company's board appointed ross levinson as interim ceo of yahoo. closer to home a three- alarm fire in prince george's county destroyed part of a car

dealership. it happened this morning. firefighters arrived to find heavy fire and smoke in the passport repair shop. the blaze extended to the roof making it unsafe for firefighters to remain inside. took a couple of hours to bring the blaze under control. investigators say it could take several more days to determine the cause of the fire and full extent of the damage. the church bell has told for the final -- tolled for the final time for members of the largest congregations who tonight are looking for a new home. as matt jablow tells us, it's the final chapter in an ongoing dispute over the future of the episcopal church. ♪ [ music ] >> reporter: hundreds of parishioners filled the falls church anglican for today's 5:00 service, marking the last time they'll ever be together in this nearly 300-year-old building. >> a sad day. >> it is. >> reporter: after losing a 5 1/2 year legal battle that revolved around the philosophical direction of the

episcopal church, nearly 4,000 parishioners here are without a spiritual home, having been ordered not to return to the church after today. >> is jesus christ the one and only savior of the world? we believe he is. ♪ [ music ] >> reporter: a legal battle began because parishioners here felt the national episcopal church had become too liberal as evidenced by their recent practice of overdaning gay priests. gary has been a church member here for the past 12 years. >> i hate to leave this facility, but we want to move on with christ. >> reporter: the historic church was founded in the 1730's. george washington was an early board member. today one of the church's long time pastors considered what washington would have thought about all this. ♪ ♪ >> i think he would regret that the episcopal church has left its foundations theologically. >> reporter: in falls church,

bombing targeting iraq security forces leave four people dead tonight. one of the bombings occurred in the western city of ramadi. a policeman was killed. seven others were wounded. hours later a suicide bomber blew himself up at a security checkpoint in baghdad. two policemen and a civilian were killed. nine others were wounded. the attacks come as the u.s. embassy announces it's scaling back efforts to train iraqi police. a gruesome discovery in

mexico. 49 decapitated and mutilated bodies have been found on a road connecting monterey, mexico to the u.s. border. they were missing heads, hands and feet, making it difficult to identify them. police also found a banner containing a threatening message from a drug gang. a west virginia woman's family says she's lucky to be alive this mother's day. veronica mcvoi spent three days trapped in her husband's van after it rolled down an embankment. they feared the worst when she didn't come home. >> i told my friends to start looking around, if they see my van anywhere, because there ain't too many in town. nobody had seen her anywhere. that's hard to realize, somebody lay there and whether

you're going to die or anything like that. >> she used a tire wrench to break one of the van's windows and crawl up an embankment to safety. tonight she's hospitalized in fair condition. she's being treated for broken ribs, back and clavicle. hundreds of people took advantage of today's warm and sunny skies to participate in bike d.c. the annual event encourages people to park the car, suv or truck for a small fee and take a bike tour of downtown washington and arlington landmarks. it was a 25-mile-long ride or an 11-mile-long family route. proceeds benefit the nonprofit washington area association. d.c. alley will get a lot brighter sooner. the city is replacing more than 1,300 incandescent light bulbs with led in the alleys. tomorrow d.c. mayor vincent gray will help install one of the new fixtures in the mount pleasant neighborhoods. still ahead tonight on 9 news now, it took her seven years to learn english, 12 years to graduate. >> i do believe that education, good education is very

graduation season and a very special day for one columbia university janitor. 52-year-old immigrant graduated from the ivy league school with honors. he spent a dozen years to finish his courses in the classics while working full- time in the janitor's job. first he learned english after fleeing the civil war in his native yugoslavia in 1992. >> ancient greek is just a killer. just a killer. latin is a little bit easier, at least for me. i clean bathrooms to work three more years and get a master's. then get a lot more money and better job and stuff like that. i want to try, if i can, to get a master's. >> he says after sunday's ceremony, he'll return to his

out toward 81. new market and harrisburg, but we are dry in the d.c. area and around the beltway. temperatures pretty mild still. lower 70s in downtown. clouds acting like a blanket, kind of keeping in the heat we had earlier today. not cooling off quickly. 6 in leesburg. 65 in martinsburg. fredericksburg lower 70s. the satellite radar picture showing us we've got this area of low pressure coming in, so we'll probably see some showers by tomorrow morning impacting your commute and those showers are going to be slow-moving. so wet monday morning commute for a lot of us. also same deal for the evening commute. wet again on tuesday. we could use the rain, that's for sure, but it will also help us clear the air of those pollens and we're going to get some welcome allergy relief. the 9 futurecast shows us the showers hour by hour. tomorrow morning, we'll see showers in the area. the yellow indicating some more moderate to heavy rainfall.

throughout the afternoon we're looking at more rain, kind of for much of the day. also for the evening hours. you can see we'll see quite a bit of rain, maybe one to two inches by tuesday morning or so. and then also maybe a rumble of thunder in the afternoon for both monday and tuesday. tuesday morning also looking pretty wet. moderate to heavy rainfall as well through much of your tuesday. also be a little cooler tomorrow. we're not talking 80s. about 10 degrees cooler for a lot of folks. here's a look at your forecast overnight. cloudy and cool with showers developing. lows will be in the 60s southwest at 10 miles per hour. monday morning cloudy and cool with showers. grab the umbrella. temperatures will start out in the 60s. not a whole lot of warming up because of the clouds. it will be cloudy and cooler with showers, a slight chance for a thunderstorm, highs will be 69 to 74 degrees. highs for your monday afternoon, average high is 74. so in downtown, 71. 70 in college park. 71 in reston.

also low 70s for gaithersburg. cumberland, you'll get up to around 67. winchester 70. hagerstown close to 70, around 69 degrees. upper 60s for warrenton areton and manassas. in downtown in the lower 70s and toward annapolis you get close to 70 degrees. here's how your monday breaks down. a cool start. we're talking wet weather for the entire day. don't forget your umbrellas for monday and tuesday. next three days, we're looking at more showers tuesday, but mid-70s. then on wednesday 80s, partly subpoenay conditions. your next seven days, we're looking at more sunny conditions and looks pretty nice to finish off the work week. we're talking a low 80s for thursday and friday. also the weekend as of now looking pretty good, bruce. we're talking 79 for saturday and on sunday 80. the nats playing several games. may get washed out. we'll have to keep an eye on that. >> thanks, anny.

you've seen a lot of drunk driving crashes with innocent victims but on this mother's day, andrea mccarren has one family's story you might not easily forget. >> now it's time to put your pajamas on, said his mother, and she wrapped him all cozy warm in a towel. >> every week, 10-year-old olivia reads a story to her little sister. >> okay, said froggy, but i'm thirsty. >> reporter: she reads at her grave site, because 4-year-old emma is gone. >> i was driving and i'm the only one left. why me? why not emma so she could have her whole life. >> reporter: a driewng driver ended her life as the little girl was discovering dance, horses, butterflies and the color blue. >> those are real pictures, and if i could have handled it, i would have probably taken pictures at the funeral so you could see that, too. >> we learned emma's story through her mother, jennifer, who spoke to teenagers trying to turn their lives around through the reset program.

>> how do you present that to them? >> she confessed her darkest moments of grief. >> begging god to give her back to me for 10 minutes. that i just want her back. >> the sisters spend their birthdays together, too. >> every year, olivia makes a cake and she goes to the grave, and she has birthday cake with her sister. >> reporter: jennifer lost her daughter and her fiancee, brian, that terrible evening. >> i heard the most horrific sound i've ever heard. >> reporter: an emergency room nurse was among the first on the crash scene. >> i watched them take emma's lifeless body from the vehicle. >> reporter: brian was in the front passenger seat. emma, strapped into her car seat right behind him. >> i heard the cry of a mother saying help my baby. help my baby. >> reporter: emma fought for our life for eight hours. >> she had multiple injuries. she had broken her neck. she had broken her pelvis. she had lacerated several organs in her abdomen.

>> today a pink cross marks the crash scene. the young drunk driver who killed emma died instantly. just two weeks before he had been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. had he survived this crash, it would have been the third dui of his 24 years. >> then got him another glass of water. glub, glub, glub. >> reporter: jennifer is pregnant now, due in early july. it's her first child since emma's death. and it's a girl. in rock hall, maryland, andrea mccarren, 9 news now.
