general assembly begins later this morning and a budget must be passed in order to avoid the so-called doomsday budget. >> delia goncalves is live in our satellite center with just how lawmakers expect to get this done if just three days when they couldn't get it done during the regular session. >> reporter: i know. that regular session 90 days and so that was five weeks ago. they couldn't get anything done 90 whole days. so the governor now says they have to get right down to business in order to pass a budget by wednesday. so of course that means there will be no discussion of the prince george's county galling casino proposed at national harbor. that will not be on the agenda. the governor blamed the gambling debate for the budget's failure. also off the table is a proposed tax increase on gasoline and on the sales tax. however, many families are likely to pay for more in personal income taxes. take a look for yourself. individuals making $100 to $125,000 may see their tax rate

go up slightly from 4.75% to 5%. $125,000 to $150,000 pay up to 5.25%. $150,000 to $250,000 pace 5.5% in taxes per household. households earning $150 to $175,000 will see a light increase to 5%. sorry, folks, we don't have that graphic but the math continues. the more money you make essentially the higher taxes you'll pay. >> we will be back with more news later so please stay with us.

strip in the northern himalayans today. 20 people were on board. 15 were killed. government officials say the survivors are in critical condition. now to the ongoing debate over same-sex marriage. pastors across the country took to their pulpits yesterday to either support president obama's decision or to denounce it. the heated discussion also dominated the sunday talk shows. bill whitaker tracked that debate. >> reporter: it was the talk of the sunday talk shows. >> we're going to hear many voices on this issue of gay marriage. >> reporter: there were, of course, classic talking points from republican national committee chairman. >> marriage has to have a definition and we just happen to believe it's between a man and a woman. >> reporter: singer and gay activist clay aiken. >> we're going to look back on

this and be ashamed we were against this. >> reporter: but for such a hot button issue, the tone and tenor of today's debate was not hard right versus hard left. ted olson served in the george w. bush administration. he supports same-sex marriage. >> i'm not for gay marriage despite the fact i'm a conservative. i'm for gay marriage because i'm a conservative. >> reporter: the blurring of political lines reflects how undefined this issue still is. ever since president barack obama endorsed same-sex marriage last week and mitt romney, his presumed republican opponent, restated his support for traditional heterosexual marriage, hundreds have been trying to predict the political fallout. political scientist and former gop strategist, dan schnur. >> the politics in this area are changing so quickly that neither party really knows quite exactly how to deal with them. >> reporter: while polls show growing public support for

yahoo replaces its ceo and facebook birthday wishes. ashley morrison is here in new york with that and morning. >> worries about europe's debt crisis held down stocks overseas this morning. nikkei finished higher about 0.25% while the hang seng lost more than 1%. wall street hopes for a rebound this week. the dow jones industrials lost 34 points, down 1.6% for the week, while the nasdaq was flat, down nearly 1% for the week. efforts to form a government in greece have failed so far. one week after national elections. the political uncertainty further jeopardizes greece's membership in the eurozone. another meeting is scheduled for today. if no coalition can be reached, elections will be held next month. yahoo has a new ceo. yahoo says scott thompson has left the company. "the wall street journal" reports thompson told board members he's been diagnosed with thyroid cancer. thompson has been under fire for discrepancies with his resume. he had been at yahoo for just four months. ross levinson has been appointed interim ceo.

toyota has passed general motors as the world's largest automaker and toyota claimed the top spot in the first quarter, selling 2.49 million cars, according to bloomberg news. gm sold 2.28 million. and facebook founder mark zuckerberg turns 28 years old this week. this is the week of the much-anticipated ipo, which could value facebook at nearly $100 billion. that's more than disney or ford, netting zuckerberg more than $17 billion. what i want to know, where are our invitations to the party? >> and what are his friends going to get him for his birthday? ashley morrison here in new york, thank you very much. this is the time of year when college seniors around the country are trying on caps and gowns and getting ready to preports, many are weighed down by worry over how to pay their huge college debt when jobs are so scarce. >> reporter: with graduation less than a week away, communications major andrew

should be cramming for finals, here at the college of mt. st. vincent in the bronx. but his top concern isn't his grades, it's how he's going to repay his student loans. >> i applied for a radio job, retail stores, and i've been getting a lot of, we're sorry, we'll keep you in mind or nothing at all. >> reporter: he's $45,000 in debt and he's not alone. student loans are now the largest source of consumer debt outpacing credit cards and car loans. 94% of undergraduate students now borrow to pay for college. that's up from 45% in 1993. nearly 1 in 10 borrowers who started paying back their loans in 2009 defaulted within two years. that's double the rate from just four years earlier because the price tag for a college degree keeps going up. >> college tuition here was like $18,000 to $20,000.

good morning. welcome back to 9news now. we've had some excitement here in our studio this morning but things have calmed down happily. good morning. i'm andrea roane. i'm mike hydeck. at least for the moment. we had a fire alarm and it seems everything is calmed down. monika is out today but bev farmer will have traffic in a moment. we start with howard bernstein in the forecast. a nice weekend, a soggy start to the workweek. >> looks like today and tomorrow. i put on twitter we had to evacuate because of the fire alarm because we had a water leak and somebody wrote "very monday." i thought that was quite fitting. we have rain moving into the area. some folks seeing rain for hours off to the west. we'll have showers the next couple of days. we need the rain. we're about five inches in the hole since the beginning of the year. you see a couple of raindrops on our camera looking outside. got temperatures right now in

the mid-60s. 67 at noon. some light rain at reagan national with 5:00 temperature right around 70. so i think highs today 70, maybe 71. they're not going to move much. we're in the low to mid-60s most spots although upper 60s all the way up and down. we've been watching the moisture move from the south and west. quite heavy some of the rain showers in west virginia. locally you see the breaks here off to our east and into charms and prince george's county. look north and west. we've got a lot of light to occasional moderate showers. not far from haymarket. this is moving to the northeast. light sprinkles in montgomery county as well and right through the district. our highs today will range in the upper 60s north to about 70, 71 here in town. monika is off. we go over to beverly farmer. pretty good start so far on the roadways. you mentioned the wet pavement in some areas but no incidents to report from state police or vs.dot for travelers on i-95.

>> the governor called a three- day session to avoid the so- called doomsday budget because lawmakers failed to pass it in the regular session. delia goncalves is live in the satellite center with more on some of the possible cuts that are still looming. >> reporter: the lawmakers have avoided those service cuts possibly and 500 state workers being laid off in the potential doomsday budget. but, the governor says a balanced budget means there will be some slashes and it's not going to be easy for lots of folks. let's take a look at some video. of course that means the proposed casino at the national harbor in prince george's county will not be on the agenda right now. the governor blamed that debate for the budget failure in the first place. the governor laid out specific goals for this special session that will last three days. he wants lawmakers to balance the budget and lots of effort that he put in place to keep the aaa bond rating. let's listen to what the governor had to say in a recent

press conference that he held in annapolis at the state capitol. >> it will include actions on almost 600 million in further spending reductions across fiscal year 2012 and fiscal year 2013 than were originally proposed in our january budget proposal. >> reporter: so that's the governor playing i guess a bit of a game you could say. he proposed this budget in january and with the $600 million in cuts the lawmakers did not approve a budget at the end of their 90-day session. so he's saying listen, i'll give you three days, i'll give you the special session you wanted but here are my conditions. you have to include the $600 million in cuts that i first proposed back in january when they first introduced their budget. coming up at 6:00, we're going to tell you when lawmakers will bring up the casino debate. they will discuss it not right now but it may come up in the

next couple of months. i'll have more details on that in a half-hour. back to you. >> delia goncalves with that update from our satellite center. it is 5:34. there is a lot going on with your money this morning. >> jessica doyle is here to break it all down for us. good morning. >> good morning. we're going to start with what is going to be a major focus on wall street today and probably all week. the continuing fallout at jpmorgan chase. last week we told you about the huge revelations from the nation's biggest bank that is lost about $2 billion in just the last six weeks after complicated financial -- comp at a timed financial bets went bad. today they're expected to receive the regular nation of the county's chief executive officer. at least two other executives at the bank will be held accountable for the trading mistakes as well. also expected to resign this week including the trader at the center of the losses. jpmorgan's c.e.o. apologized again over the weekend stating he was dead wrong when he dismissed

concerns about the bank's trading just weeks ago. jamie dimon made the comments on nbc's "meet the press ." investors shaved almost 10% of jpmorgan's stock price on friday. wall street will continue to monitor the event at ja p morgan and -- jpmorgan and last week they decided a number of banks might be at risk because of the surprising trading losses that sent the stocks down. wall street will get the latest retail sales figures. many retailers are encouraged. the survey found many americans are upbeat about the job market and lower gas prices. as for the numbers, the dow stands this morning at 12,820, dropped 34 points in trading on friday. it was down 1.6% for all of last week. nasdaq lost about 1% on the week. it was flat on friday and the s&p 500 lost more than 4.5 points. so super busy for wall street. >> lot to watch this morning. thanks, jess. the search continues for two masked men caught on tape

robbing a 7-eleven in montgomery county. surveillance video from the store in the 10,000 block of new hampshire avenue in silver spring shows the armed suspects going into the store and confronting two employees. the men held the workers at gunpoint and demanded they open the registers. the suspects got away with an undisclosed amount of cash and merchandise. as maryland police continue to prepare for the g8 summit this week in frederick, they are hoping to get reimbursed for the costs associated with the meeting. according to the frederick news post, federal officials have yet to designate the summit a special national security event which would give funding to local agencies. frederick county sheriff's says it's not fair and he's hoping maryland's congressional delegation will help with this. virginia is among nearly 30 other states cracking down on domestic violence. in many cases choking is hard to prove because victims don't often show signs of physical injury but domestic violence

good morning. welcome back to 9news now. 5:46. i hope you enjoyed the weekend. get your rain gear ready. >> well need some rain but we're going to get it tonight, tomorrow, maybe on wednesday and the rest of the week is going to be good. that is a quick breakdown ever the forecast. we'll expand it a little for you. the bus stop forecast i advise some rain gear this morning. it's your choice. if you want to get wet, don't grab that rain jacket because we have lots of showers out there. temps running from the upper 50s to upper 60s but it's really more like upper 50s to mid-60s for most of us. sunrise a few minutes before 6:00 a.m. not that we're going to see t. cloudy today.

showers on and off. some light, some heavy. there will be lulls too, maybe a rumble of thunder. about 4:00 -- 4:00 about 70. temperatures won't be moving all that much from where we are. even 8:00 tonight upper ofs on. winds southeast to southerly at 10 miles an hour. you can see the rain moving in. light showers here but much heavier stuff in west virginia. southwestern virginia, western north carolina. even eastern tennessee. all of this is moving northeast so we have to watch out for n. we could pick up anywhere from one to two inches of rain over the next 36 to 48 hours. we'll take is since we're about 5 inches below average since the beginning of the year. right now light showers for the most part in fairfax, loudoun, frederick county, back through fauquier and prince william counties. lesser action to our east and northeast but with all of this moving northeast, looks like everybody is going to see rain here this morning so we have the wet streets. that could also slow down your drive n. 46 in columbia.

we head toward 9:00 mainly up in east and west virginia near the maryland-pennsylvania border. 65 in town with low 60s from leesburg to hagerstown. even down in fredricksburg 63. look how temperatures are slow to move today. by noon a scattering of showers, some lulls as well. 67. we'll get into the middle of the afternoon with more showers. temperatures around 70 for the high. we may see a couple of spots sneak into the low 70s but wet weather with us for the next day and a half at least. mike, back to you. >> when it comes to the weekend box office, it's all about "the avengers" again. they raked in another $103 million. that's about half of what it made in its debut weekend. so that's over $300 million. however, the movie still made more in its second weekend than any other film. they also crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide. believe it or not people did see other movies this weekend. coming in second "dark shadows" starring johnny depp.
