be selfish here and say today was not the right day for them to be here. >> to each his own. it's not affecting my day. i'm in too good of a mood to be bothered by that. >> in georgetown, kristin fisher, 9news now. leaders from the world's eight largest economies will join president obama at camp david for the g-8 summit. the spiraling financial crisis in europe will be the focus, but the president has another message he wants the world's most powerful leaders to know about. there are too many hungry people out there. today he announced $3 billion in private money to help curb hunger in africa. >> i felt it was also important, also critical to focus on the urgent challenge that confronts some 1 billion men, women, and children around the world. in justice of chronic hunger. >> that would mirror the president's first g-8 summit in

2009. he left with $22 billion in pledges from the g-8 countries. up in maryland right near camp david, the protesters are trying to spread their message. >> g-8 protesters are coming off like curiosities than a threat. >> he needs to be impeached. >> eight world leaders are making the economic decisions that will essentially define the lives of the other 7 billion of us. >> nearly everyone has seen online videos like this one, previous g-8 protests that have gotten out of hand. >> reporter: police chief says he is ready. the police presence here is heavy, but not heavy handed. no one is boarding up picture windows. >> i don't like for anything extraordinary to happen. >> this is commissioner young. >> in fact, county sheriff and county commissioner held a

meeting with some occupy organizationers in the weiss grocery store parking lot. >> are you hearing their message? >> the messages of frustration and that message probably is heard everywhere in this country. >> scott broom, 9news now. now to my colleague in frederick. >> reporter: here in frederick, one city police officer told me, totally underwelming. at this point, that is the extent of the protest. >> no bomb. no tanks, let's burn the banks. >> bad language was about the worst of it as a couple dozen protesters marched through downtown frederick. frederick police say they have to prepare for anything. police were particularly worried about a group they call the black block. anarchists, like a woman who would only give her name as nancy m. >> are you planning to break any windows? >> i'm not even going to

answer that. >> reporter: frederick's police chief tells me there's no such thing as over preparing. he's actually asking the feds to pay for some of its officer's overtime. but i'm not sure that this is going to help him make his case. in frederick, bruce leshan, 9news now. >> and once the g-8 summit is over on saturday night, the dignitaries head over to chicago for a two-day nato summit. and the police there are gearing up for protests as well. as many as 10,000 protesters are expected to show up in the windy city. chicago placed 8-foot tall fences in areas around planned demonstrations. the city has been planning for protests for the past year. in fact, chicago was originally the site for the g-8 summit before that was moved to camp david. police now have a second suspect in custody and this afternoon's shooting at the rockville metro. it happen around 2:30 in the pedestrian tunnel between the metro station and the park and ride lot and within minutes, officers had arrested the first

suspect and alleged gunman at a nearby gas station. police say he shot a 16-year- old male in the leg and grazed an 18-year-old woman with a second bullet. they believe this was no random attack. >> the shooter and the primary victim are known to one another. this is not a stranger based event. and this also allowed us to be able to quickly develop the suspect and locate them. >> in fact tores say that 18- year-old woman who was grazed wasn't actually a target. both she and the 16-year-old male suffered only nonlife threatening injuries. police say the second suspect was not armed, but was with the gunman earlier in the day. jurors will take the weekend off before they continue deliberations monday in the john edwards corruption trial. the jury got the case this morning after 17 days of testimony and those jurors now have to decide if the former democratic presidential candidate broke any campaign

laws when he used donated money to cover up his affair with rielle hunter. edward faces up to 30 years in prison if he is convicted on all 30 counts. for a fourth straight day. former personal trainer took the stand at the roger clemens second perjury trial. once again, he stood by his contention that he injected the former all-star pitcher with steroids. after almost a full week of testimony from one person, the judge is now issuing time limits, desperately trying to speed things up. judge reggie will no i allow each side 90 minutes. and lawyers will have to make a good case if they want an extension. so, what the heck is going on at the clemens trial? it's now week number five and the judge is already warning lawyers. two jurors have been dismissed and time limits to speed up the trial? is this a sure sign these charges should have never been brought or is this all a necessary sacrifice in the

a city council race decided by the flip of a coin? that's exactly what happened today in the west texas town. on election night, bruce and brian each got 118 votes. they could have asked for a runoff, but that would have cost the town money. one man could concede to the other, they don't want to do that, or they could cast a coin toss. >> i didn't want to concede, because that would be giving up. certainly spending taxpayer's money to do another election was ridiculous, so the option was to cast lots, as they called it. >> well that was bruce mcnair and he won the coin flip and

therefore gets the council seat. i guess it's his lucky day and maybe this would be the time to play the lotto. this is your day. two days of perfect weather to wrap up the week. topper has some concerns, though. will it last through the whole weekend? you'll want to stick around to find out. but first, facebook hits the stock market, but the social media company's ipo doesn't quite live up to the hype. we'll explain whether or not that is a bad thing. that's up next.

facebook is finally on the stock market. the social media company debuted on the nasdaq this morning, but facebook's ipo was not the block buster that a lot of folks expected. it was set at $38. at first, the price starts soaring, but as the day went on, it unsoared. it went back down. it finished up 23 cents. experts say the slow start could be a sign the company's plan to make more money is not so clear as other tech companies like google, for example. >> google had a silver bullet of sorts with its advertising strategy. quite simply, facebook doesn't have that yet. facebook has done some incredible and interesting things advertising wise, but it is experimental. >> that is if it's going make a lot of money. another reason could be that facebook and the bankers who

price that ipo got the price exactly right. the social media company did set a record in the number of shares traded on an opening day. an 8-year-old girl had quite the last day of school today. now you know that last day is always a party, but for this little girl, her mom, staff sergeant latoya came home early from afghanistan and surprised her in class. suray chin was there. >> reporter: a day that can seem mundane, checking out a book, saying good-bye to friends and finding out what everyone is doing this summer. eight-year-old knows mom is far away and counting the days until she comes home. >> from where? >> afghanistan. >> mom is actually a lot closer than she thinks. >> how much do you miss her? >> with all my heart. >> asia and her classmates are excited to embark on their

maryland's natural resources police urge the public to wear life jackets to work today. it's a way of raising awareness about boating safety and kicking off national safe boating week. and at the national zoo today, the lions, tigers, and bears all took a backseat to a new main attraction. it was actress, betty white. a lot of them turned out. she spent decades working with wildlife groups to save endangered animals. she has a book out called, betty and friends, my life at the zoo. very nice. >> great lady. >> we like her a lot. everybody does. >> we'll talk about boating safety next week as we get into memorial weekend. and we are going talk about the weather for the preakness and also for the air show at andrews. it still appears saturday will be better than sunday. sunday not a disaster, but saturday is picture perfect. let's start with a live look outside. we have generally clear skies, it's our live weather cam

come and get it! subway. eat fresh. in the mail bag tonight, the trayvon martin case and reaction to news that some newly released evidence lends credibility to george zimmerman's story that he was being beaten by trayvon when he shot and killed him. john was quick to the keyboard. now that facts are apparently starting to find their way into the discussion, i haven't heard from mr. jackson, maybe they are huddled with their resident word smith to carefully craft a statement to rally their supporters. well maybe. but over on the wusa9 facebook page, there were differing sentiments. kimberly says it doesn't exempt the fact that he pursued an unarmed child. i would have bust him up side the head, too. and ebony says trayvon should

have fought. he was practicing self-defense. fight became a crime when zimmerman decided to play god and shot him. zimmerman had several opportunities to chase his course of action. he will have to answer in this life or the next. but kim denise appeals for calm on all sides. i don't feel i can judge, considering i was not there nor personally involved. judging without all the information is just jumping to conclusions and will never resolve anything. i think the responses would be different if it would not have been presented as a racial case. well kim, of course you're right about that, but let's not forget that one of the reasons zimmerman reportedly thought trayvon felt suspicious is he is a black male. if that is the case, you tell me. how do you leave race out of the conversation? by the way, we would never, ever leave your e-mails out of mcginty's mail bag.
