evening good evening. chen gawng is in the united states. drew levinson has details of the sudden and unexpected trip from china to the u.s. crowds cheered as chen arrived. with the help of a translator, he thanked the american government and others for their efforts to bring him for the united states. >> i believe that no matter how difficult the environment, nothing is impossible as long as you put your heart to it. >> reporter: saturday the chinese activist got a phone call telling him to pack his

bags. within a few hours, he left a beijing hospital and boarded a flight to the united states with his wife and two children. his flight landed here just outside new york sti. the trip ended a diplomatic tug of war that lasted nearly a month. the blind act virs was an outspoken critic of china's forced abortion policy. he escaped house arrest last month and sought refugee in beijing. the u.s. struck a deal for him to get treatment at a local hospital and be reunited with his family. once there he asked to leave china and secretary of state hillary clinton restarted negotiations and got him out of the country. >> for the past seven years i have never had a day's rest so i have come here for a bit of recoup ration in body and in spirit. >> reporter: chen says he will continue to fight injustice as he lives and studies law at nyu

in manhattan. >> it's anything but a normal weekend for the residents who live near camp david where world leaders have gathered and hundreds of protesters have been bussed in from washington and baltimore. president barack obama and other g8 leaders are meeting on the global economy. tonight the president said he and the global leaders have made progress on a number of issues including iran, syria and north korea. demonstrators took to the streets in nearby thurmont, maryland with local law enforcement out in riot gear. we have the story from thurmont. >> reporter: while world leaders meet at camp david, protesters were bussed in and took over main street. roughly 200 ethiopia demonstrators poured into town angry that ethiopia's prime minister has been invited to rub holders with other leaders at the g78 summit.

>> president obama, he doesn't -- [indiscernible] >> reporter: while protesters say atrocities are going on in that part of the world. >> we're hoping that -- [indiscernible] >> reporter: maryland state police of frederick county brought if riot police. so far the demonstrations have been peaceful. rosemary mcdermott, a long time resident wanted to see what was going on in her hometown. >> i've been impressed with how gentle they are and they're trying to let us know what they perceive is a wrong. >> reporter: occupiers also joined in with their sets of issues. >> they deregulated the banks. they deregulated industry. they -- corporations are people. the citizens united. they let this happen and so now they expect to fix it. >> reporter: police blocked off main street and the surrounding area for hours. riot police stood their ground as a precaution because there was no violence but people such as mcdermott who felt they learned something today. >> i think it's a real

experience for thurmont. we've been so closed in a sense, protected. this is a way of letting in the fresh air. i'm real excited about it. >> reporter: things have quieted down. there are some lingering protesters but for the most part the people of thurmont have their town back. in thursday month, maryland, 9news now. police in chicago have busted up a plot to blow up president barack obama's campaign headquarters in the home of chicago mayor -- and the home of the chicago mayor. three men are accused of trying to carry out the attack. the three men are charged with possession of explosives to commit terrorist acts. >> these individuals charge dad are self-proclaimed anarchists who traveled together from florida to the chicago area. their intent was to commit terrorist acts of violence and

destruction during the nato conference. >> bond has been set at $1.5 million for each suspect. back here the family of singer/songwriter is discussing with officials a public sendoff. the 75-year-old brown died wednesday of organ failure at john hopkins hospital in baltimore. d.c. mayor vincent gray said he might make the washington convention center available for a public funeral. it is expected to attract thousands of fans and dignitaries who followed chuck brown during four decades. this weekend the tributeses to the father of go-go kin. >> reporter: a lot of people are continuing to celebrate the

the naacp has passed a resolution endorsing same-sex marriage. the historic civil rights organization announced today its board voted to back a resolution supporting marriage equality. naacp president called gay marriage, quote, a civil right and a civil law. gay marriage has divided the black community with many religious leaders opposing the measure. governor martin o mali has -- o'malley has signed a bill into law. the opponents are working on a petition to force a referendum of same-sex marriage on november ballots. it's legal in six states and the district of columbia. 31 other states have passed amendments to oppose it.

the tornado that tore through joplin, missouri a year ago is now the costliest since at least 1950. the cost of the damage now expected to reach nearly $3 billion. it destroyed nearly a third of the city and damaged about 2,000 buildings including water treatment and sewage plants. passengers aboard a plane for las vegas had a streak of luck on their side. just minutes after takeoff, they heard a loud bang. then one of the engines failed. the plane turned around in mid air, made a safe return to the deluth, minnesota airport. >> it was a crazy experience but not a good experience. thank god we survived. you start thinking about the kids, your life, like oh, my

god. >> nobody was hurt. with >> two people were wounded in a friday afternoon incident. two teens have been charged as adults with attempted first- degree murder and use of a firearm in commission of a felony. the shooting may have been due to a dispute with one of the victims. the 16-year-old male and 18- year-old female victims were treated at a hospital for what are called nonlife threatening injuries. a man is stabbed to death and d.c. homicides looking for a suspect tonight. it happened around 9:30 last night in the 1200 block of north capitol street. that's where police found 42- year-old john griffith of southeast washington. he had been stabbed several times. he was taken to the hospital where he later died and tonight there's a $25,000 reward for information in this indication. coming up later on 9news

mark zuckerberg has updated his status to married. he has wednesday his long-time girlfriend. his profile shows the two married saturday and included a photo of the newlyweds. they met at harvard and been together for more than nine years. zuckerberg took his company public on friday or should we say their company. clear skies, mild temperatures all around the d.c. area. today dozens of people strolling along the georgetown waterfront, some taking advantage of outside dining and others just taking in the scenery along the potomac. >> that mark zuckerberg wedding was a surprise to all their guests. they thought they were

storm alberto, the first named storm for the atlantic hurricane season. hurricane season starts june 1 so we're a also early on this one. it's just off the south carolina coast. winds are at 50 miles per hour gusting up to 65 miles per hour. this is projected to go out to sea not impacting any of us any time soon. that's got news. right now temperatures around here are in the 59 degrees in manassas. 59 for gaithersburg. 60s in leesburg. but still fairly mild in downtown 70. annapolis also coming in at 70 degrees. for us we've got high pressure giving us lots of sunshine to start off your sunday before some of the clouds filter in. so enjoy the bright sunny start as you're going to church, running some errands. it looks okay for the joint services, open house air show. later in the day, though, they may see some clouds filtering in and a chance for a shower, especially in you're east of interstate 95. and then more showers

let's talk horse racing. the prevailing thought was bodemeister. the runner-up was the favorite. it was a perfect day. absolutely gorgeous at pimlico for the 137th running. let's get right to the stretch run. 11 horses wide coming down the stretch. it looks like bodemeister leading again. they get to the 200 yard mark and looks like he might have enough to hang in but with a hundred yards to go, the kentucky derby winner kicks in the reserve and he nip bodemeister again. i'll have another just by a neck, a long neck and knows how to use it. great stuff. >> i never know when you see a young horse, what they're going to develop into being. he's got the heart of a champion, the stride of a
