that campaign. our bruce johnson is following this closely. very big? >> reporter: this is big. so new we didn't even have time for a cryptic. we are talking four counts against thomas gore, the assistant treasurer to the 2010 campaign for mayor. in these documents, they don't name mayor gray, but my sources say we are talking mayor gray. candidate b, is brown who was a candidate for mayor back then. in these charges the assistant treasurer for the gray campaign is charged with using funds from the gray campaign to purchase money orders. count one talked about a $100 money order. count two talked about a $335 money order. count 3 talked about a $100 money order and they say this money was taken from the gray campaign, money orders were purchased and then the money was turned over to candidate b, and we are told that is brown.
12:02 pm
the most serious charge carries 20 years in prison, obstruction of justice and what prosecutors are charging in this charge is that the assistant treasurer had the intent to impede, obstruct and influence the investigation, that is the one that gets you serious jail time. just quickly, giving you background, j.c., you call brown, a minor candidate for mayor, claims vincent gray and staffers solicited him to continue criticizing the incumbent mayor at the time. he says it was a quid pro quo situation, that he was promised and given campaign support, and he produced some money orders, at that time. we, in our investigation, found that hundreds of money orders were purchased by the gray campaign at the safeway right across the street from the campaign headquarters. and part of the investigation is the feds looking into where these money orders went. we at least know part of that ever their conclusions the stand treasurer used some of the money orders to funnel money into the campaign of brown.
12:03 pm
>> but the question is, did the mayor know about this? did he endorse this? >> reporter: absolutely. regardless of what prosecutors may tell us publicly, we know when they launch these kind of investigations they take it all the way to the top. you start with the assistant campaign treasurer and they get him in. the mayor has said publicly he knows nothing about this. we have no idea what mr. gore is saying. his attorney is fred cook. i suppose they are meeting right now because fred cook isn't returning my phone calls. we are going to look to see if mr. gore is going to trial or will cut a deal. this is the first shoe to drop. there will be other shoes. >> there are going to be more? >> reporter: absolutely. >> you are going to continue to follow the story, we'll have the latest information obviously on our website wusa9.com. bruce johnson, thank you very much. we also have news now of a

possible school bus explosion under the third street tunnels. the incident occurred in the northbound lanes. it left several vehicles trapped and the tunnel was closed. let's get to andrew mccarron, on the phone with more information. what can you tell us? >> reporter: photographer dave satchel and i were just about a block away when we heard a swell of sirens and smelled smoke in the air. on foot we followed about a dozen ambulances, ten fire and ems trucks all ending up at washington and third street at the end of the tunnel where we found about 40 people, all of whom had just been evacuated from their vehicles. here's what happened as far as we know at this point. an empty school bus in the tunnel, suddenly filled with smoke. witnesses say they heard an explosion. the empty school bus became engulfed in flames. of course there are about 20 other vehicles in the tunnel. their cars were quickly
12:05 pm
becoming filled with smoke. almost immediately witnesses say police were in the tunnel evacuating people. some tell us they feared it was a terrorist attack. several of us did say police were shouting at them to abandon their vehicle, get out on foot, thankfully, no major injuries were reported. i know one woman i spoke with suffered an asthma attack, another suffered an anxiety attack, one man told me his car was rear-ended in the tunnel. of course, given these circumstances, there was no ability to exchange insurance information. i also spoke to a family who was visited from lima, peru. they were in the vehicle with two very young children directly behind the bus. after the explosion, they said they were terrified, because there was really no place for them to go, but police literally pulled them out of the car, escorted them out of the tunnel. right now, one by one, car

owners are being escorted by police back into the tunnel to retrieve their cars. again, a minor explosion in the third street tunnels around 11:30 this morning. it created quite a scare but thankfully no major injuries. >> thank you. we also have good news about a six-year-old boy. he is back home with his family after an intense 23 hour search. police found jay von brown. >> reporter: it was an emotional day for the family of six-year-old jay von brown, missing since sunday. >> please bring him back, he is an innocent young boy. >> reporter: police scoured the courtyard of the columbia road apartment complex, where the boy was last seen playing sunday morning, his picture quickly broadcast throughout the area in
12:07 pm
hopes someone would spot him. police say a break in the case came when they checked the tape. surveillance cameras mound here in the parking lot of the complex captured jay von leaving with an adult female known in the neighborhood only as quail. >> we just thank god that he is in good hands now. >> reporter: just before 8:30 a.m. police found the six-year-old and the woman from that surveillance camera. jay von's aunt says the woman is a stranger who just befriended the mom recently. >> this is a wake up call for any mother to keep an eye on their children. don't trust nobody. >> reporter: in columbia heights, 9news now. >> police say jay von is safe, he was taken to children's hospital just as a precaution. we have not received word on when charges will be filed. and we have just learned that former dc mayor and the current ward 8 council member
