thomas gore used funds from the mayor's campaign to make contributions to then mayoral candidate sulaimon brown. gore sls charged with destroying a ledger recording the alleged payoff. our bruce johnson is in federal court. he'll bring us more information when he gets it. if you take piper lane or nokesville road in bristow, virginia, you may want to plan to take an alternate route because rain has washed out several roads in that area and water is about waste deep. police have set up cones and signs in order to warn drivers. crews are also bill business -- are also busy repairing several sinkholes because of the rain. let's get to howard with the full forecast. hello. we are looking at the threat for shores and -- for showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and the next several. these are areas that got 4 and

5-inch rain totals last night. caused all sorts of problems with washed out roads and high water. we're watching that for another couple hours unless it gets extended again. it was originally supposed to expire at 10:15 this morning. pretty quiet. most of the rain up across new england. we're seeing some thunderstorms in western west virginia and just south of town, just started to pick up. showers popping right near lake anna. this is drifting slowly east, south of fredricksburg. one thing that's been protecting us so far, we've had all the low clouds in place. here are the showers and storms last night. they diminished this morning. i do want to point out we're starting to see the dark areas. these are breaks in the cloud cover. i think we'll see more sunshine at least a couple of hours midday. that's going to heat things up. it's kind of like putting water on the stove. you heat it up and it starts to bubble. the bubbles in our case will be showers and storms. things are moving pretty slowly. still mostly cloudy out there. chance of a shower or two.

by 3:00 75. mid- to upper 70s today but we'll have to watch out this afternoon to see what pops with any showers or storms. jc? >> all right, howard. virginia state police are trying to determine if weather played a role in two deadly crashes on interstate 95 in dale city. the most recent accident happened in the northbound lanes just before 8:00 this morning. as many as three cars were involved. one person is dead. police are on the scene. they're investigating how this crash happened. and then a few miles away and a few hours earlier, police were on the scene of a deadly crash on i-95 in dale city. authorities say the driver of a van lost control, struck a guardrail, and flipped his vehicle. two passengers were thrown from the van. one of them was killed. the other passenger and the driver have been hospitalized. they are listed in serious condition. president obama is making clear that mitt romney's work at a private equity firm will

be an issue in the presidential campaign. however, romney's camp says that that experience makes him more qualified in order to fix the economy. danielle nottingham has more now from the white house. >> reporter: president obama is taking heat for a campaign ad attacking mitt romney and his work for a private equity firm. >> walked away with a lot of money they made off of this plan. >> reporter: the ad features workers from a missouri steel company that bain capital bought and shut down. >> romney is a job destroyer. >> reporter: the president did not back down when asked about the ad at the nato summit. >> this is not a distraction. this is what this campaign is going to be about. >> reporter: romney's camp calls it an attack on the free enterprise system and some of president obama's own supporters including newark, new jersey mayor cory booker called the bain ad, quote,

nauseating. mayor booker walked back his comments but romney's camp was already off and running with them in a campaign ad of his own. >> enough is enough. >> reporter: campaign watchers expect more of these ads between now and november. >> so this is fight to define mitt romney and it's a fight to define the election. >> reporter: the romney campaign says bain capital bought the steel company featured in the president's ad two years after mitt romney left the firm. and opponents throughout romney's political career including the republican primary have used the same line of attack with limited success. danielle nottingham, cbs news, the white house. in an historic move, the naacp says it is supporting same-sex marriage. the baltimore-based group says it is a civil right. >> it is the responsibility in the history of the naacp to speak up on the civil rights issues of our times. we live in a democracy.

and in our democracy we have a benefit of a constitution which defines the equal rights which we all share. >> the group's statement of support invokes the 14th amendment of the constitution which provides equal protection under the law to all americans. a trip to a las vegas hospital prompted council member marion barry to issue an apology for comments that he made last month. the council member was treated for a blood clot. barry says the clot formed while he was traveling to a convention with d.c. mayor vincent gray and other council members. on twitter barry thanked the kind, professional filipino hospital staff and he also said i stand corrected. barry recently mentioned filipino immigrants when discussing concerns about not enough locals becoming nurses and teachers. the leaders of maryland's

general assembly have announced a possible date for a special session to consider expanding gambling in the state. that tentative date has been set for july 9. one central topic would be the approval of a new gambling site, the first in prince george's county. county executive rushern baker has announced his support for a casino to be at the national harbor. a judge could rule later today in the case against town square market owner richard kim. he's on trial. he's been charged with selling alcohol to minors. kim's arrest came after a 9news now investigation that began last december. following yesterday's testimony, both the prosecution and the defense rested their cases. kim declined a plea deal that would have given a suspended 14- day jail sentence. still to come when 9news now continues... >> reporter: the spectacular blastoff for space x. i'll have the story coming up.

county police say they have made an arrest in the murder of a local musician. he was fatally shot last december near a bus stop on stewart lane in the white oak area of silver spring. for months they have been looking for a suspect. police plan to hold a news conference this afternoon to explain how the suspect is

linked to this crime. our own bruce johnson called -- [indiscernible] with me is the c.e.o. and political observer tom. were you surprised by yesterday's news? >> yes. >> why? >> we've all been monitoring all of these activities with the federal investigations that are ongoing with the u.s. attorney but we were a little taken aback thinking there might have been others coming before him. the real issue now is, you know, what -- as bruce said last night, what other shoe will drop drop. if you take a look at some of the folks who were an active part of this campaign, there could be a bunch.

others. >> also, the mayor has emphatically said this did not happen, it did not take place, he was not aware of it. what is your reaction now? >> this was a treasury in his campaign. >> not just the treasurer in his campaign but a long-term friend of at least 20 years. the treasurer when he -- when the mayor ran in 2004 for ward 7 against kevin chavez, when he ran in 2006 as chairman and assistant treasure when the mayor ran for the mayoral position. it definitely leads to a lot of unanswered questions. >> whether this is going to touch the mayor and how it can affect him. when we're talking about these checks that were given at the time mayoral candidate sulaimon brown, we're not talking about a lot of money. three money orders, two for $100 and one for $335. that's really not a lot of

the atmosphere. they could contain heavy rainfall. last night we saw the heavy rain in a big way out just to the west of town. this morning into the noon hour, watching the rains across new england. not much here. one little shower down toward lake anna south of i-64. we have showers and also in western west virginia. these are the 24-hour rain totals. and you see how you've got this bright bull's eye into western areas of prince william county, even into parts of fauquier. i have a 4-inch total from one of our weather watchers in catlett. close to 5 inches. that's why we had the flooding problems and the concerns and we still have an active flood warning there for prince william and fauquier county and manassas still 2:15 this afternoon. we've seen a little bit more sundown south. notice -- sun down south. 57 orange. the clouds are thicker up north in d.c. upper 60s to 72 degrees here in washington with 568 la plata and easton at 73. still mostly cloudy but you look up at the sky right now, you get the feeling the sun is

going to break through here not too shortly. 72 degrees -- or shortly i should say. humidity 73%. kind of muggy and sticky. we have storms in the northwest heading to the northern part of minnesota. down south we've seen some storms. there could be severe weather today in atlanta and south carolina. but you track this cluster of storms. that's alberta, what's left. not even a depression anymore. we're watching some clouds break up to our south and west. as we look at the future cast, we're expecting to pop up some showers and storms for the afternoon. some of these could be locally heavy. maybe a better threat south and west of d.c. where we've already seen more sunshine. this evening into the early part of tonight, some showers around. should quiet down overnight like last night. tomorrow, though, watch this. we add some heat. by noon we're starting to pop showers and storms. some of these will get heavy again in the afternoon. we're going to do the same thing on thursday.

but by the end of the week, this pattern is going to break down. we're going to see heat build and isolated storms. muggy today. upper 70s. might see 80s south of town. showers and storms developing. we'll call them scattered about. 65 tonight with 60 in the suburbs. showers wain. tomorrow more showers and storms in the afternoon, partly sunny, 80. thursday 82 degrees and more showers and storms in the afternoon. becoming isolated by friday. and by sunday and monday, we are looking at hot weather, isolated afternoon storm memorial day. high of 91. we'll be right back with 9news now at noon in just a moment.
