vanished from blocks from his home. they have a signed confession from pedro hernandez. it's still unclear what, if any, evidence officials have to prove hernandez's story. >> reporter: in 1979 pedro hernandez, then 18 years old, worked at his family's small grocery in the soho neighborhood just a block from where 6-year-old etan patz disappeared on his way to school. based on a tip, detectives drove to this small house in maple grove, new jersey. commissioner ray kelly announced the arrest. >> hernandez described to detectives how he lured young etan from the school bus stop, led him into the basement of the bodega, choked him there and disposed of the body by putting it into a plastic bag and placing it into the trash. >> reporter: police is say

hernandez was brought back to the scene of the crime where he retraced his steps for investigators. prosecutors at manhattan district attorney's office are proceeding with caution. even with the confession, it will be difficult to corroborate hernandez's story, the story as given also leaves police no closer to knowing where to look for a body. the new twist comes just a month after the cold case drew headlines when police dug up the basement in a neighborhood where etan disappeared. the renewed publicity may have led to this break. >> the individual who gave us information came forward because of the recent notoriety on the case. >> reporter: hernandez had lived in new jersey since the early 1980s. his family members left his home under police escort without commenting. investigators say he was not a suspect at the time of the disappearance, but he did tell others about his crime. >> in the years following etan's

disappearance, hernandez had told a family member and others that he had, quote, done a bad thing and killed a child in new york. >> reporter: john miller, cbs news, new york. the hurricane bud now has strengthened into a major storm overnight as it turns toward mexico's pacific coast. it's located about 150 miles southwest of man. >> manzanillo. it has sustained winds of 115 miles an hour, a hurricane warning is posted for manzanillo northward. official atlantic hurricane season doesn't give until june 1st but government forecasts this season will be normal. 15 named storms are predicted, 4 to 8 will turn into hurricanes. southwest new mexico two wildfires that merged destroyed

some other homes and buildings. the fire has tripled in size, burning 70,000 acres. some communities, voluntary evacuations are under way as many homes remain at risk. the world's first private spaceship is scheduled to dock with the international space station later today. the unmanned spacex dragon capsule rendezvoused with the station yesterday. the station will use the robotic arm to reel in the capsule. the capsule is carrying 1,000 pounds of supplies. campaign rhetoric is ratcheting up. president obama and mitt romney are escalating their criticism of each other as they make their case in key battleground states. susan mcginnis with more. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, terrell. iowa is one of those swing states. president obama is hoping for a replay of 2008 when iowa really helped launch him to the presidency. he's stepping up his attacks on mitt romney who was hitting the air waves in iowa and fighting back. mitt romney went to school in

philadelphia, continuing his week-long focus on education. >> we allow more choice for parents. i like every parent to have a choice and every child to have a chance. >> reporter: but he faced a tough crowd. teachers from the urban charter school criticized governor romney's education proposals and his assertion class size doesn't matter. >> i can't think of any teacher -- >> reporter: the obama campaign is expected to go after romney's record as governor of massachusetts. during that time, romney made large cuts in education funding and the state's debt rose. it was a national debt romney used to attack the president. in des moines last week he said romney added to the deficit. >> a prairie fire of debt is sweeping across iowa and across the nation. >> reporter: the president campaigned in des moines last night. >> his speech was more like a cow pie of disportion. >> reporter: he says romney's plan would add to the deficit.

europe debt crisis made for a turbulent day overseas. tokyo finished down for the week, marking its worse losing streak in 20 years. while hong kong's hang seng added about 0.25%. early investors in facebook may be getting their money back. morgan stanley, the lead bank in facebook's initial public offering, will reportedly intense sat share hold years who overpaid last friday. some investors didn't know how much they were paying early friday because of a technical glitch with the nasdaq. facebook shares are still down about $5 from their opening price. on wall street blue chips posted a gain for just the fourth time this month. the dow added 33 points while the nasdaq lost 10. time is running out for lawmakers to keep a key student loan interest rate at current level. last night the senate defeated two measures, one backed by each

party to extend the rate on stafford loans. without congressional action that rate will double in july. one of the nation's oldest newspapers will stop its presses. the new york "times-picayune" will public onlane daily but new orleans will be the largest city in the u.s. without a daily newspaper. a video game company owned by former star curt schilling has struck out. 38 studios laid off its entire 300-person staff on thursday. the company received a $75 million loan to move to rhode island in 2010. if the company goes under, rhode island could be responsible for some of its debt. and if you work for ibm, you could have an iphone, but you can't use siri. the voice-activated system is banned on ibm systems. a company executive says because ibm has no control over how the
