head northbound 395 just a little slow in landmark. coming up in my next report, another look at the big picture at 6:58. the big picture means heat today. >> we're going to warm up. yesterday 83. today 86. over the weekend pushing 90. the warmest spots will be near 90 but sunday, monday into tuesday. >> sounds like ippedz ens day-- >> independence day. >> it is. we're running ahead of the schedule as it's been most of the spring. the bus stop forecast, it is a steamy one. we've got a sticky, steamy morning with a little bit of drizzle in spots, a little bit of fog. temperatures in the 60s to low 70s out there. sun came up a while ago, about an hour ago now. our day planner clouds early. we're going to get into sunshine. spotty thunderstorm here, midday. won't be like that but sunny skies, partly to mostly sunny with the isolated storm this
6:46 am
afternoon. mid-80s should do it for highs. 83 for the drive home. had showers and storms yesterday evening especially once again northern virginia. that stuff is now lifted up toward central jersey and pulling away from us. fog, got to tell you about that, especially south and west of town. tappahannock airport zero visibility. cumberland zero. warrenton a half mile. we'll see how much of this area can expand off to the east before we start to burn it off over the next couple of hours. again sunshine i think by mid- morning here. look at the temps. they're in the low 60s west. that's where we've had some of the fog. the area condenses better with the moisture. we're sitting at 72 here andle at the pax river naval air station 72. outside on our michael & son weather camera cloudy skies. i was on the weather terrace at 6:30. drizzling a little bit. southeast winds at 7 and humidity way up. a muggy, sticky morning. 88% on the humidity. we'll put our future cast in motion. partly sunny. a few showers and storms for
6:47 am
the afternoon hours. things will settle down tonight with the loss of the daytime heating. we get into tomorrow and we think it's going to be in the mountains that we see the activity. maybe up into pennsylvania as well. from d.c. south and east, generally a dry day and a warmer day. temperatures are going in this direction. we've got a high today about 86. a few isolated thunderstorms. tonight 60 to around 70. tomorrow 88 with a spotty, stray afternoon storm. near 90 on sunday. it is really going to be another warm one. as we head to memorial day, 91. maybe 20% chance of an afternoon storm sunday and monday. better in the mountains. by tuesday an afternoon storm, 88. here comes the front by mid week dropping our temperatures. increasing the thunderstorm chances once again. andrea, over you to. preventible injury deaths come from things like accidents at home, car crashes and prescription drug abuse. a new report ranks our region compared to the rest of the nation. with a look at how we are we stack -- how we stack up, we're
6:48 am
joined by can't executive director of the trust for america's health. thank you for being here with us. where do rerank in the d.c. met -- where do we rank in the d.c. metro area? >> d.c. is slightly above average. maryland slightly below average in terms of fatalities associated with preventible injury. but average isn't good enough. we still have a long ways to go. >> when i read this and talked about preventible accidents like car crashes, that's what we usually think about as preventible accidents but you say there is a new, greater threat. >> what's been interesting is over the last several years, prescription overdose poisonings have accidental poisonings from prescription drugs has really overtaken motor vehicle accidents throughout the country and in maryland and d.c. in particular, that rate is now higher than motor vehicle fatalities. that's partly because this is a new problem. more and more prescription drugs are -- dangerous prescription drugs are being prescribed and there's a tendency for accidents and
6:49 am
misuse. but it's also because we've made a lot of progress on preventing deaths from motor vehicle accidents. but what's interesting is that d.c. is one of only three jurisdictions in the country that does not have a prescription drug monitoring program which helps public health authorities monitor how drugs are being prescribed, make sure they're not being misprescribed. that's a simple common sense policy that we could put in place. >> so that's something a government agency could do. the other things that have happened that keep us at least average, all the laws dealing with driving, texting while driving, the seat belts. are they really making that much of a difference? >> the improvements in motor vehicle accident rates i think are really attributed to things -- attributable to things like primary seat belt laws, stronger drunk driving laws. again in our region virginia does not have a primary seat belt law sow you can't be stop -- so you can't be stopped if you're not wearing a seat belt unless there's some other violation the police have seen. maryland and d.c. still don't
6:50 am
have ignition interlock requirements after a first drusk driving conviction. each jurisdiction have different policies that they could adopt that could make it even better. >> anything else we can do to keep ourselves safe? >> our report talks a lot about the policies that ought to be in place but we also need to take personal responsibility for this. whether or not there's a law, we know we should be wearing seat belts. about 15% of americans still don't do that. those are common sense things and particularly on a holiday weekend when more people will be driving. >> jeff, thank you for being with us. you be safe this holiday weekend, too. >> thank you. since it is a holiday weekend, we've been combing through the day's daily deals to find you some stuff to do. here's some of my favorite deals today. hurricane season starts in about a week. so virginia is holding a sales tax holiday on supplies. starts today and runs through the end of the month. this means no tax on things like flashlights, tarps, bottled water, that kind of stuff. much, much more. how does a barbecue lunch today
