gaithersburg, manassas and andrews. we'll come back and let you know if any storms are brewing for the metro area tonight and take you all the way through the holiday weekend for the metro area in a bit. the memorial day get-away is underway across the region. this is a live look at chesapeake bay bridge where holiday travelers are trying to reach the beach tonight, traffic moving steadily on the bridge and no major delays at the toll plaza. drivers are running into very slow traffic on eastbound route 50 through annapolis to the severn river bridge. >> aaa predicts 900,000 of us from the washington area will travel this holiday weekend. nine out of 10 of those will drive and while many people will journey to our area beaches, most travelers will stay within about 50 miles of home. >> our economizing while still traveling and one of the ways of doing that is taking trips. >> experts say staycations will

remain popular all summer line. aaa has seen a surge in families booking shorter destinations at tourist destinations that are closer to home. >> a steady drop in gas prices is a likely reason this holiday weekend is expected to be the busiest in five years. aaa says the national average for a gallon of regular unleaded is $3.66, 15 cents less than this time last year. in the district gas averages $3.75 a gallon, in maryland drivers are paying an average of 3.58 and in virginia the average is 3.47 a gallon. we're getting an early start to the memorial day weekend at the beaches. >> this week scott broom has been showing you what you can expect this summer from a new boardwalk in ocean city to the opening of the big indian river inlet bridge in delaware and some new solutions for those parking headaches in rehoboth. tonight scott is in dewey beach, delaware, where 9 wants you to know the battle is on over the town's hard partying

image. >> reporter: dewey is a beach town with an increasingly vocal group of homeowners who had it with noise, crowds and trash. they want an image makeover especially when it comes to underage drinkers. >> they're known in these parts as june bugs. >> reporter: that's dewey police lieutenant bill locker and here he is at walter high school in montgomery county where the largest crowd ever turned out to hear his presentation about drinking hazards at the beach. locker thanks 9news' andrea mccarren for putting a spotlight on the issue. >> it's opened a lot of eyes to what goes on. this is one of our busiest streets. >> reporter: on the streets of dewey beach controlling graduates of so-called beach week costs overtime and headaches. here is some of locker's advice to kids and parents. >> j walking is the biggest thing. they run across the highway, we stop them and they've been drinking. >> reporter: how about those house parties on unlit backstreets. >> all you have to do is play

your radio loud enough for a police officer to hear it 50 feet away. that's a violation of the disorderly noise ordinance. we usually find whoever comes to the door has been drinking. they appear to be underage. after speaking with them they're usually place under arrest. >> reporter: later locker told me about the penalties. >> just for having an alcoholic beverage in public is $235 then to be under the age of 21 it's another $130 on top of that. >> reporter: dewey has the right now to suspend the landlord's right to rent after three disturbance calls to a residence and the result has been property managers and landlords who are now eager to evict kids after just the first call. in dewey beach scott broom, 9 news now. >> also in dewey this season those noise restrictions on bars have tightened up and the town council has put a lid on parking lot parties outside bars by limiting the number of events they can hold a year. rolling thunder has arrived marking the unofficial saturday of the memorial day weekend festivities in washington.

they started the day in cranberry, new jersey, and about two hours ago thousands of riders rolled into the hyatt regency that's where our kristin fisher joins us live. hey, kristin. >> reporter: last year nearly 800,000 people rolled into washington for the annual ride for freedom, but this year they're expecting even more riders for the 25th anniversary. making way for almost 1 million motorcycles means major road closures. parts of washington boulevard and memorial bridge will be closed sunday as the riders roll from the pentagon to west potomac park. if motorcycles don't get you in the mood, this will. it's the national memorial day concert. it starts at 8:00 sunday night, but get there early when gates open at 5:00. the concert is co-hosted by actors gather sinise and -- gary sinise and joe montana.

performers include this year's idol runner-up jessica sanchez. memorial day morning expect motorcades near arlington national cemetery. at 11:00 it's the annual wreath laying ceremony at the tomb of the unknown soldier. then it's time for the main event, the national memorial day parade on constitution avenue. last year it seem like the headliner was the heat -- seemed like the headliner was the heat. this year should be slightly cooler, but temperatures will still push 90 degrees. the parade will feature a special tribute to the u.s. air force and the grand marshal is retired major general chuck yeager, the first person to break the sound barrier. all right. now if you want to avoid the traffic, traffic is not your thing, there are a lot of things going on in the surrounding cities and towns, rockville, falls church, vienna

all have their own big memorial day parades, put if you want to hear all these motorcycles, you got to be downtown early. this parade starts at 2:00 sunday -- excuse me, at noon on sunday. back to you. >> don't want to miss it. kristin fisher, thanks for a preview. ♪got a little story to tell you ♪ preparations are now underway for next week's public farewell to the godfather of go go chuck brown. a public viewing for the d.c. music legend will take place tuesday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the hour theater on t street in northwest. then the community can attend a memorial thursday from noon to 3:00 at the washington convention center. bruce leshan has more about what you can expect if you plan to attend next week's chuck tribute. >> reporter: chuck brown used to play here at the howard theater on t street when it was a run down old dump back in the

1980s. ♪i feel like busting loose >> reporter: he was actually scheduled here for a homecoming concert in june. instead a full circle moment, his viewing here on tuesday about 11 hours. no photography allowed inside, no photography even allowed right now, but they did send us some pictures. very, very little parking in the neighborhood and so organizers are recommending that you take public transportation, the shaw howard university metro stop just within a few blocks. one of the really cool things about chuck brown was his ability to bring all kinds of different people together. he played the go go clubs, the kennedy center. he brought in whites, blacks, asian americans, everybody. his funeral will be here in perhaps the most establishment of spots, the d.c. convention center. great deal of secrecy still

surrounding this, rumor has it that there are going to be some big stars coming, big stars speaking, but at this point we don't even know which hall it's going to be held in. we do know that they're ready, if they're huge crowds, ready for people to camp out out front if they, do ready to stage people coming up the stairs here, still recommending that folks take public transportation and if you can't deal with the hassle, we are going to be broadcasting it live both on air and online. at the d.c. convention center, bruce leshan, 9 news now. >> the city is closing streets around the howard theater for the viewing and the convention center for the funeral. we've got a facebook page where you can leave your pictures, videos and written tributes to chuck brown. type in rip godfather of go go. the man who confessed to killing etan patz is expected to enter a plea this evening by videoconference from his

hospital bed. pedro hernandez was taken to a psychiatric hospital today and put on suicide watch. his arraignment comes 33 years to the day the 6-year-old boy disappeared in new york city. today the suspect's brother-in- law said the confession can help bring closure to etan's parents. >> don't have to suffer anymore in waiting whether he's alive or what happened or who killed him. >> the patzs have yet to comment on this arrest. now to remember etan president ronald reagan declared today may 25th missing children's day. since then tragically many more children have been abducted, but there is a new study and new advice how to keep kids safe. peggy, you're here with that. >> the center for missing and exploited children has found the greatest number of abductions happen between the hours of 2:00 and 7 p.m. that's right when children are walking home from school and that's what etan patz was doing when he went missing.

>> the picture of yourself. >> reporter: the national center for missing and exploited children commemorated this day by holding a safety and children's id event with help from the alexandria police department. >> i want to make sure we would be able to find her again if we got separated. >> we want to make sure he knows the difference between approaching strangers when he's with us and not with us. >> reporter: the center wants parents to keep talking to their children about safety. one worker grew up in spotsylvania county and new kristen and katie list who were abducted from their front yard. >> i felt so bad. it was something that toughed my heart. >> reporter: she decided to stud -- touched my heart. >> reporter: she decided to study exploited and missing children in college. their killer also abducted sophia silva from her front

porch. >> most abductions take place from 2:00 and 7 p.m. those are the hours kids are going home from school and to after school activities and we found also a lot of these kids got away and more than 80% of the children got away because they simply walked away. they fought, yelled, kicked, screamed. they brought some sort of attention. >> reporter: she says parents should make sure their children know their surroundings as best they can. take them on a tour of their neighborhood and make sure they know who are considered trusted adults. if you'll be picking your child up or have somebody else picking them up, perhaps use a codeword so they're waiting for that word so somebody can't come up and say oh, your mom told me that i'm taking you home. >> right. and fool the child. i like the idea of raising that motion and getting attention. >> exactly. you've got to teach your kids to do that. if something is not right, make a commotion and get out of there. >> thanks, peggy. the judge at the john edwards trial closed the courtroom to reporters just a

short time ago. we don't know why. the jurors have been deliberating for six days. the former presidential candidate faces six counts of violating federal campaign laws. jurors must decide if edwards broke campaign laws by using money donated to cover up his affair. so far jurors have requested 61 exhibits including just one defense exhibit. edwards could get up to 30 years in prison if he's convicted. coming up spacex becomes the first private spacecraft to dock to the international space station. >> also ahead memorial day weekend is also the opening weekend for area swimming pools. we'll take you to today's kickoff in the district. >> and soccer star and sex symbol's david beckham's underwear is on its way to the white house. we'll explain. >> but first mitt romney and president obama shift their campaign strategies heading

this race is getting tighter by the day. polls show the president and governor romney in a virtual tie this month. i want to ask you according to this new washington post abc news poll out today it appears government romney is doing better with blue collar workers, white workers who are struggling financially. what do you make of this and what could this mean for the president? >> this is about the way the election last time shook down. white blue collar workers favored john mccain. this is just almost a replay of what we saw that time around, but you're right. this thick is really at this point too close -- thing really at this point is too close to call. these polls are all over the place in some of them you have romney with a slight heed. in another you'll see president obama with a slight -- slight lead. in another you'll see president obama with a slight lead. the other part of it is the tighter it has gotten, the

nastier it seems it has become. from the beginning the romney folks were picturing barack obama as sort of a european socialist and now last week we saw the obama campaign release an ad that compared mitt romney's old company bain capital to a blood sucking bat. so when you get down to that kind of stuff, you know this one is going to be down and dirty and it is very, very close. >> we've seen that shift in strategy for sure. really quickly some reports say the president seemed to have stumbled as of late and the governor seemed to have found his footing. surely your campaign strategists on this weekend will have a lot to talk about at this point in the campaign. >> well, i guess some people are on the president's side think that this ad he put out attacking bain capital went maybe a little bit over the line, but, you know, when you go back and look at these

we are in pretty good shape for the most part. there were a couple showers earlier in st. mary's county up into portions of charles county. they kind of died out. we'll keep the chance of an isolated storm in tonight but i wouldn't change your plans. temps, 83s by tay and i'll throw out the 91 in rockville -- 83 bethesda and i'll throw out the 91 in rockville. our average temperature is 80. over the weekend we'll be running about 10 degrees above average. 85 college park, 84 in beltsville. so here's the deal. more like july 4th really. isolated thunderstorm possible tonight, a little late fog is possible again and then rather hot and humid over the weekend with just a few afternoon storms and by and large, the best chance for thunderstorms will be west of i-81 up in the mountains, the higher elevations will be more conducive to thunderstorm development. for tonight early isolated thunderstorm possible, then partly cloudy, mild, patchy fog late, 62 to about 70, getting a little muggy downtown.

three, two, one. >> you notice how the mayor didn't jump into the water, but he did kick off the summer season with a splash today. the mayor attended the opening of the brand-new pool at rosedale community center. >> good day for it. this city now has 19 outdoor pools, 11 spray parks and five children's pools. surae chinn joins us live from rosedale pool to look at why this is such an extra special kickoff over there. hey, enjoying the sun i see. >> reporter: we are enjoying the water. everything is new here at rosedale community center. we've got the slides and the waterfalls. it is spectacular here. it has really undergone a tremendous transformation. >> we weren't allowed to swim in it and play in this playground back in the '40s.

back out there and i'm looking forward to a lot of things for rosedale. >> reporter: can you imagine playing ball right here? this is going to be dedicated to mamie peanut johnson in a few weeks, dedicated to her. so it will be renamed and everything. it's spectacular. it's an artificial turf football field and it really is going to be fun. back to the pools, all these pools will be open tomorrow starting at 2:00. have fun, everybody. >> we will. lots of great memories there, lots of great honors. thanks. we have a commuter alert for riders on metro's green line in northern prince george's county can. at 10 p.m. there will be no service -- county. at 10 p.m. there will be no service. there will be free shuttle buses connecting the stations, but it might add up to 50 minutes of travel time. metro is closing this part of the line to do recommended safety work from 2007.

more than two dozen new speed cameras are now active around the district. for now only warnings are being given out, but starting june 6th expect a ticket if they catch you speeding. among the new speed camera locations bladensburg road in northeast where new york and west virginia avenues connect in northwest. we have a complete list at www.wusa9.com. it is another small step for mankind, a private spacecraft linked up with the international space station for the first time today. bigad shaban reports from hawthorne, california. >> capture is confirmed. >> reporter: control rooms in houston and hawthorne, california, erupted in applause after the first privately owned vehicle docked with the international space station friday morning. >> houston station, looks like we got us a dragon by the tail. >> reporter: astronauts used a nearly 60-foot long robot arm to guide spacex's dragon cargo

ship to the space station. the maneuver took place 250 miles over australia as the spacecraft traveled over 17,000 miles per hour. >> i don't have words enough to express the level of excitement we feel here at spacex. there's so much that could have gone wrong and it went right. >> reporter: the dragon capsule was constructed here at spacex headquarters in southern california. it's one of two new commercial spacecraft that will bring cargo to the space station now that the shuttle program has ended. >> and launch of the spacex falcon 9 rocket. >> reporter: a rocket with dragon aboard blasted off tuesday from cape canaveral, florida. friday's high stakes mission went well. although the cargo ship had to rely on only one of its two laser imaging systems to see the space station. nasa officials praised the spacex team. >> they completely built and tested and flew this spacecraft in a manner that is really has been just remarkable. >> reporter: dragon will drop off about 1,200 pounds of

supplies at the space station and will also pick up equipment. it's scheduled to return to earth on may 31st. bigad shaban, cbs news, haw born, california. -- hawthorne, california. >> engineers are working on plans to allow the spacecraft to take up to seven passengers. something unusual came floating by miami beach today. it was a full size replica of the space shuttle. the replica knowns at explorer was being towed -- known as the explorer was being towed to its new home in houston to be put on display at the visitors have in johnson space center. visitors will be able to walk through a refurbished interior of the replica. it was 35 years ago today, may 25th, 1977, that the original star wars was released in theaters and since then there has been two sequels, three prequels as well as hundreds of spinoff novels, comic books, tv shows and video games.

caught on tape a string of shocking thefts in southeast new york. it happened in 40 chester last weekend. a man had too much to drink -- in port chester last weekend. a man had too much to drink and passed out on a sidewalk.

patrons passed by and instead of helping him they take his stuff. police are trying to identify the people and say an internal investigation is also going on to determine why none of the patrol cars in the area noticed the man. high impact glass proved to be too much for a pair of would be thieves. >> a good thing, too because the family dog, no challenge. watch this. surveillance video from the delray beach florida home showed the suspect casually knocking on the front door. nobody answers. they go around back where one of them makes friends with the family dog. he then checks unlocked doors with the dog following. eventually the burglar picks up a brick and tries to smash in the glass, but it's unbreakable hurricane glass. the homeowner said he installed it for just this reason. >> yeah. i have family. i have kids. i have a life. so i don't want anybody to come into my house unless i invite you. >> with the advances in technology more and more people are getting surveillance videos

and this particular victim happened to have a great system that showed a lot of detail of the subject that tried to get into his house. >> no kidding, but despite those clear images the suspects are still on the loose. they took off more than just the gloves during a parliamentary debate in the ukraine this week. some shirts also came off. the fight was sparked by a proposal to make russian the official language in some parts of the ukraine. that caused what you would call an uproar among the opposition party. they want to preserve ukraine's cultural and political independence. one of those lawmakers ended up in the hospital after getting a beatdown to the head. coming up find out which mid-atlantic beach made this year's list of the nation's best. >> up next a look at the first ambulance in our area specifically designed to transport sick babies, children and their parents.

in tonight's health alert a rather unique new ride traveling around the beltway. a fairfax hospital unveiled a colorful new pediatric ambulance, the only one like it in our area. it provides intensive care for sick babies and children. there's enough room in the ambulance for two kids and their parents so they don't have to be separated. it features a lab, generator, a large supply of oxygen and a respirator. this rolling icu can fit as many as seven doctors if needed. >> that transport process is a period where lots of uncontrolled things can happen, can cause more instability. so having a rolling icu like this allows us to bring the icu to the patient and have a more control led environment. >> in fact, the rolling icu covers a 600-mile radius. i'm here in the wusa9 studio kitchen frying up an egg. wish you had smell-a-vision

from the sun or tanning beds, there's an immediate dna damage and that change can lead to skin cancer many years later. you want to be thinking sun protective clothing, hat, sunglasses and le possible, seek shade because -- whenever possible, seek shade. that will help reduce your overall risk. >> reporter: you yourself are a skin cancer survivor? >> i've just recently been diagnosed with my second melanoma and thankfully it was caught in its earliest stages because although melanoma is the deadly type of skin cancer, what caught in the earliest stages it, has an almost 99% cure rate. so we really encourage people to look at their moles and if they're changing in any way, size, shape or color, go right to your dermatologist and have it evaluated. >> the doctor had that surgery last week, removed off her leg last week, her second bout with melanoma. if it can happen to her, it can happen to anybody. so sunscreen is so key. she gave us some great advice.

first 15, just not enough. don't go there. 30 or up is what you want as far as the sunscreen. also look for things that say they have prod protection, uv -- broad protection, uva, uvb. here we have spf30. you want it to say uvb and uva. she says for sensitive skin in little kids there's nothing better than zinc oxide. it's a real barrier to the sun. >> what about the sprays because a lot of people think the sprays are easier to get it all over a little one? >> it is easier, but i think you've done a story. some of the particles aren't necessarily so healthy and the doctor says too much of it ends up in the air and on not your skin. stick to the creams and lotions. look for high spfs, zinc oxide, uva, uvb. >> great things to know if you're headed to the beach and by the way, the best beach in america is coronado beach in san diego according to the annual dr. beach rankings
