the fear of thunderstorms and heavy rain passing across the area tonight. what about overnight and the memorial day holiday? olga breese is in the weather center. that line of storms is moving very quickly fairly intense as it came from the north and west. however at this hour little rain left on the radar. not so bad through the area but

on the time loop you can see how intense the showers were coming aross the alleghany mountains. much of it stuck together hitting baltimore, d.c. and moving now into southern maryland. at least at this hour we're left with only a little bit of light rain and drizzle and i think the cloud cover is going to stick around with us through the overnight period. that means muggy conditions overnight as temperatures will be in the 70s and the overnight forecast on the muggy side. sitting now down into the 80s for most of us across the region but we will see at least another hot day coming our way tomorrow. i'll have your full memorial day forecast in just a couple of minutes. the thunderstorms caused officials to shut down the memorial day concert down on the west lawn of the capitol before it was over. matt jablow has that story. ♪ >> reporter: the national memorial day concert on the

west lawn of the capitol began like it normally does. ♪ >> reporter: plenty of good music, thousands of enthusiastic people. [ cheering and applause ] >> enjoying the concert. >> are you having fun at the concert? >> i am. >> reporter: and of course an abundance of patriotism. >> our freedom is all about our freedom. >> it's great yeah having people out there on the lawn and good night, wonderful weather. ♪ >> reporter: but then right around 8:45, just after singer natalie cole finished performing the concert was stopped and the national mall was evacuated as a powerful storm system was approaching. >> they topped it -- they stopped it because of the storm. >> we regret that due to circumstances beyond our control we are unable to continue this year's national

memorial day concert. >> reporter: pbs broadcasting the concert nationwide and to u.s. troops all over the world immediately switched over to a taped broadcast of last year's event. as of late tonight there was no word about exactly when it would be rescheduled. matt jablow, 9news now. amtrak travelers got a wrench in their travel plans today when service along the northeast corridor was disrupted because of downed power lines. now at this hour amtrak says service has been restored between washington's union station and philadelphia. crews are still working tonight to repair the wires north of baltimore. this was the scene earlier tonight at union station. passengers waiting patiently for word on when their trains would be heading out. >> hopefully not too long, i have a plane in baltimore. so takes less than two hours. >> amtrak says passengers should still expect delays of 30 to 45 minutes if you're

heading to amtrak tonight, and -- to new york, passengers who have paid for their tickets but choose not to travel due to the service disruption can now receive a refund or a voucher for future travels. storm beryl is approaching hurricane strength tonight moving closer to the southeastern u.s. coast and expected to make landfall in hours. already had an impact on memorial day weekend forcing festival and concert cancellations. duarte geraldino has the latest. >> reporter: it's starting to rain as beryl gets ready to make landfall. the storm is expected to come ashore late sunday or early monday and hit parts of florida, georgia and south carolina. forecasters say beryl could drop up to 8 inches of rain in some areas. officials in jacksonville, florida canceled memorial day events because of the dangerous conditions. >> this storm has the potential

to produce localized flooding, downed trees and power lines that be impact the -- that can impact the public safety. >> reporter: rebill starting ruining -- beryl started ruining plans sunday. lifeguards moved people away from the shore on tie bee island in georgia. the rough conditions kept most people out of the water in flagler beach, florida. >> we didn't get a chance to stuff it up but that's all right. little rough. not going to put her on the board today. >> reporter: these surfers in daytona beach came back to shore saying the waves were too dangerous. >> when those waves are just crushing you, it's tough to get out. that's when i know i'm like nope, time to go back in. >> reporter: forecasters say beryl is expected to move up the southeastern coast mondaylying some -- bringing some much-needed rain. duarte geraldino for cbs news. >> honoring the men and women in the military continues on many fronts this memorial day weekend. earlier today, people had the chance to enjoy a tribute at

great meadow in plains, virginia. surae chinn has that story. >> reporter: about 15 pew thome are here supporting the -- 15,000 people are here supporting the wounded warriors. a sky high dilute to the military. >> i have a son in the service, air force, 22 years and i'm so proud of him. >> this is free soil and the only reason that this soil is free and we're able to do this is because of the guys that didn't get to come home. >> reporter: those who are back are walking among us wounded and some of those injuries run deeper than the physical ones. >> they took out 90 something tumors out of me. you know i've got bipolar and stuff like that but they don't understand what's happening to us. >> reporter: sergeant steven hao served in the first gulf war. >> things like ptsd and other stuff caught up with me. >> reporter: he spent a year and a half in the hospital. >> one day dad was going good

and then he wasn't. >> reporter: he nearly lost everything including his family. >> finally my wife said you need to find help or find a new home. >> reporter: both men are doing better and today a field full of supporters are saying thank you for your service. >> i think this is a great event to do that. to honor them you know for everything that they sacrificed for all of us. >> you sit back and we reflect you know about what they've gone through. i personally haven't been through it but i than them every single time. >> we have to support them you know and that's why i think we have an obligation to support our troops. >> reporter: beethoven founded the organization sponsoring the event and they hope to raise $1 million for the wounded warriors. i'm surae chinn in the plains, virginia, for 9news now. >> the bikers of rolling thunder made their way from the pentagon to the reflecting pool today to pay tribute to servicemen and women. this year marks the 25th anniversary of rolling thunder. the event began as a tribute to veterans of the vietnam war.

today hundreds of bikers participated in the trade. for more a day of pride and -- many a day of pride and emotion. >> i'm a vet. served and thought i'd just show my support. >> you ride down the street and thousands upon thousands of people out there cheering you on and it's just a nice -- it restores your faith in the country when they do that. it's amazing. >> you feel appreciated. >> yeah, yeah. not just for me but for everybody that served and some of those that didn't come back. >> today's rolling thunder ride capped off a weekend of events. participants also attended speakers events at the korean memorial and a concert. he may have struck again. police in herndon, virginia says four animals were stabbed overnight at the kidwell barn at flying pan park. the animals' wounds were discovered when caretakers adrived to feed them this morning. the injuries aren't life- threatening. last month three horses, housed in a barn near the park were also stabbed. police are looking for a

suspect tonight. in california, a boat collides with a row boat sending stunned members of a crew team spilling into the water. it happened this afternoon at marina dell ray. it plowed into the rowing shell carrying nine members of the l. a. rowing club. one women was air lifted from the water to the hospital. everyone else was shaken up but apparently okay. >> i saw the rowing shell and the people in the water. i gave them my life jacket and the seat cushion for flotation. and i helped get some of them out of the water until help arrived. i'm actually surprised it didn't sink. given how much of it is underwater. >> the driver told authorities he just didn't see the rowing shell. that accident under investigation tonight. still ahead on 9news now this sunday, it's a no-go for lady gaga. why she's canceled her concerted this holiday weekend. >> and we've got a new winner at the box office this weekend.

we'll find out who took the top spot from "the avengers." >> after daytime highs in the upper 80s near 90-degrees we are cooling down nicely thanks to the rain showers and some of the storms that even moved on through the region. right now most of the temperatures are sitting into the 70s and your wakeup weather, well it will be on the muggy side. we're featuring partly cloudy skies overnight and yes a little sunshine tomorrow before the rain arrives. i'll have your full memorial day forecast and the look ahead coming up when 9news now continues.

four people in ocean city, maryland got busted for allegedly selling drugs on the boardwalk. police say undercover cops bought synthetic trucks and par -- drugs and paraphia nellie from two businesses. they gave the officers instructions on how to get high usings the drugs.

-- using the drugs. four people now facing drug charges tonight. lady gaga is canceling her concerts in indonesia this weekend among concerns. they said they would disrupt the show and accused the singer of promoting and spreading pornography. >> i think everyone including the government itself everybody will have hope that the show will go on. i think from the start there's a pretension that the show will go on yeah? but of course along the way we have to review all the plans and we have to be mindful of what is happening in the media. what's happening in the nation itself. >> muslim groups protested friday in jakarta against her appearance. men in black 3 took the top spot at the box office this weekend. really no surprise.

the sequel starring will smith and tommy lee jones grossed some $55 million in the u.s. since friday. that bumps "the avengers" back to second place after three weekends atop. "the avengers" doe nestic total was -- domestic total was $514 million. it's only the fourth movie to top a half billion dollars. "battleship" was number three at the second weekend with $10.8 million. its total is just over $47 million. the golden gate bridge turned 75 years old today and a big celebration planned for -- is planned for san francisco. tens of thousands are gathering along the water front and there will be a fireworks display sometime tonight. coming up tonight on 9news now, big scare for a young surfer. >> there was like a guy he was probably like, probably like 30 feet away. but he said he saw a shark but i don't know. he could have told me. a florida surfer is recovering after a shark attack. chad renfro is home and resting tonight but last week, he was bitten by a stark in jacksonville beach. the college student was out on a surf board waiting for his dad and brother to join him when this happened. >> i would just caught a wave and i was paddling back out and i felt a shark clamp on my foot. there was like a guy, he was probably like -- probably like 30 feet away. but he said he saw a shark but -- i don't know. he could have told me. i looked at him and i thought i'd still be able to play basketball and i wasn't happy but it wasn't as bad as losing your whole foot. >> he heads back tot doctor on tuesday and -- to the doctor on tuesday and he may be fitted for a boot. his friend saw a shark but didn't give him a heads-up. is that right? >> that's not my kind of friend. >> okay.

>> and -- oh. it's been quite a night in the weather center. >> yes. >> although things are starting to calm down we had a little bit of a ruckus with the heavy storms coming through around the 8:00 hour into almost 9:30 with some of the steady rain in and around the beltway. most of it has moved down to the south. that's good news. we are left at this hour though with a little bit of light rain and we're picking up son some of the moisture on the doppler radar. right now though, it looks like we are in the clear. the steadiest stuff is way off to the south and west, it's going to be damp most of the night and muggy which means the possibilities of a little bit of patchy fog as we head in toward the early morning hours new mexico all though we've been cooled off nicely. highs today made it into the upper 80s can close to 90- degrees but not quite and because of the rain most of us are back down nicely into the 70s even picking up on about 57 degrees out toward arlington. 68 for rockville. 67 in rest on the. you get the picture. -- reston. you get the picture, it is quite nice at least to finish off the night. the forecast for the remainder is going to be a little bit

unsettled for the next day or so. as we wait for that cold front to move on through. don't put the umbrellas away just yet. right now from the michael & son weather camera, we have quite nice. we have cloudy skies and we will get some breaks in the cloud cover around sunrise but temperatures should be 70 degrees in town for the rest of night. we're not going to budge too much with the southerly winds then by tomorrow morning things will improve as we start off the day with a good dose of sunshine. so for memorial day another hot one yes. unseasonably high heat moving up into the upper 80s and close to 90-degrees by the afternoon and we have a code orange air quality alert for tomorrow as well. it will be unhealthy for the sensitive groups and a few showers and storms are not out of the question for tomorrow afternoon and evening and a better chance of rain on tuesday. for most of us for the short- term forecast though looking

pretty good overnight. partly to mostly cloudy. that patchy fog should develop during the early morning hours and the suburbs and areas middle 06s. closer to town closer to 70- degrees with the southerly winds but that's going to keep temperatures fairly uniform. only talking the upper 60s from manassas through frederick and out toward the eastern shore as well. tomorrow afternoon, looks pretty good through midday. i would say even late day is not too bad heating up to 90- degrees but late in the afternoon and evening around the 8:00 hour we should see some of showers and storms begin to develop. before the rain tomorrow though most of us will get close to 90- degrees. in fact forecasting nigh 90 to -- now 9091 for reagan -- 90 to 19 for reagan national airport. the futurecast just predicts the approximate timing of the moisture. by tomorrow at noontime if you have any outconsider plans, we're pretty much in the clear

here in the immediate metro area but late afternoon and early seeing, similar to what we saw today but the better chance of rain for us is going to come on tuesday and into wednesday. notice as that front slides on through, we will start to settle in with some westerly and northwesterly breezes and that's going to cool things down for us at least get us back to normal out of the 80s and back into the 70s by the weekend. if you are heading to the shore tomorrow for memorial day, looks pretty good. temperatures move up into the middle 80s and waves at 1 to 2 feet on tuesday as well i think tuesday afternoon we have the opportunity for a little thunderstorm to develop. things looking great at the shore as well. temperatures moving up into the upper 80s to near 90-degrees. the water temperature improving as well. close to 60s -- 65 degrees right now. short-term forecast, not too bad. it's hot for the next two days with a possibility of rain each day. but on wednesday, everything changes. cold front slides on through. and that means behind that front we settle into lower 80s
