forecasters expect a gradual cooling over the next few days but before that happens, thousands of people in the southeast will have a wet and windy memorial day. susan mcginnis, cbs news, washington. beryl is the second named storm of the 2012 atlantic hurricane season. well, it sort of just snuck up on us last night. the thunderstorms last night caused officials actually to shut down the memorial day concert less than halfway through it on the west lawn. >> it was shut down as a safety preciewtion due to all the lightning -- precaution due to all the lightning in the area. matt jablow has that story. >> reporter: the national memorial day concert on the west lawn of the capitol began like it normally does. ♪ i'm going home to the place where i belong ♪ >> reporter: plenty of good music, thousands enthusiastic

people. >> enjoying the concert. >> reporter: are you having fun at the concert? >> i am. >> reporter: and of course an abundance of patriotism. >> it's all about our freedom. >> it's great. having people out there on the lawn, enjoying it, having a good night, wonderful weather. >> reporter: but then right around 8:45 just after singer natalie cole finished performing, the concert was stopped and the national mall was evacuated as a powerful storm system was approaching. >> we regret that due to circumstances beyond our control, we are unable to continue this year's national memorial day concert. >> reporter: pbs which was broadcasting the concert live nationwide and to u.s. troops all over the world immediately switched over to a taped broadcast of last year's concert. organizers said the concert was being postponed. there was no word about exactly when it would be rescheduled.

matt jablow, 9news now. well, nearly a million motorcyclists are believed to be in town this weekend for memorial day. it's the 25th year of rolling thunder. >> veteran bikers along with their family and friends ride into d.c. to honor and support our heroes past and present. >> reporter: this weekend we say thank you to our military, the fallen, those still serving and the heroes who have never come home. you'll have plenty of chances to give thanks with hundreds of thousands of bikers who have come from across the country to be here. >> a great time and a wonderful thing to do for the veterans, especially our vietnam era vets. >> reporter: they made the annual pilgrimage to the district where there's a memorial for nearly every conflict of the past century. >> got it all. >> vietnam, world war ii, career. people need to -- korea, people

need to remember. >> reporter: people have come thousands of miles with the intention of walking the vietnam wall but just steps away they find it too difficult. >> i had a friend who stood across the street two years in a row and never crossed the street because he was that bothered by it. >> reporter: it's this man's first times who sons have served. >> it's been tough, emotional, yes. >> reporter: while there are veterans who try to muster the strength to be here, there are those who don't want to leave. >> it's like a homecoming. >> they've got friends, family, aunts, brothers, uncles, cousins. everything is down there. that's the united states right there to me. >> reporter: the bikers have roared into town but they may walk out of here in silence. >> it's real tough. you can't describe t. you've got to live it. you've got to be -- being a vet, i can understand it but you see people down here, they lost somebody 30 years ago and it's just like yesterday.

>> reporter: ten new names have been etched on the vietnam veterans memorial wall and were dedicated this month. 4:34. here's a look at some of the other stories making news. the united nations security council is blaming syrian government forces for killing dozens of civilians with tank and artillery fire. the massacre happened in the town of houla where more than a hundred people, many of them children were killed. syria denies its forces were blamed for the bloodshed. it blames terrorists for the killing. astronauts aboard the international space station have until the middle of the week to empty the dragon space capsule. they have to unload food and supplies from the unmanned commercial supply ship. the six astronauts will then load up the space capsule with science experiments and equipment to return to earth. the mission is an attempt by nasa to partner with private companies to bring the cost of flying to space way down in the wake of the retiring u.s. space

shuttle program. >> it's roomier than a soyuz so flying up in a human rated dragon is not going to be an issue. >> for nasa the end game is to be able to use u.s. hardware made by u.s. labor to launch astronauts from u.s. soil. >> so far the space exploit has been a success. the company says its dragons could ferry astronauts to the space station in three years. fire crews are struggling to contain a massive wildfire in new mexico's national forest. the flames burned more than 122,000 acres. smoke could be seen as far away as denver, colorado. the time right now is 4:35. more heat and sun expected for most of the day, but all that heat could lead to some evening thunderstorms. at 4:38, howard will tell us what we should expect. at 4:40, china is quickly becoming the wine capital of asia. who knew. at 4:48, we're going to

4:38. a heat advisory will go into effect today. temperatures in the mid-90s. plenty of nonalcoholic fluids and be mindful some early heat could take a toll on you. as far as today, it's a little bit on the muggy side this morning. we start out quiet. mid-80s by noon. highs up around 90 with isolated storm possible. i'll be back in about five minutes and look at the rest of the week's forecast and let you know about beryl of course. monika is off but we have beverly farmer to tell us if there are any issues on the road this morning. right now drying out around

the area. interstates consuction because of the federal holiday weekend. that gave everybody a break on 66 moving in past the rest area. one car we see moving east past the rest area on the right side. that's about all the volume you're looking at right no heading on the beltway into falls church and rosslyn. just a closure of river ride inside the beltway for a tree down. crews are still working on that your next time saver traffic at 4:47. back to you. >> thank you, beverly. the time right now is 4:39 and i am watching your money. millions of americans are firing up the grills, but it is costing more. prices for steaks, burgers and most other meats are up. the reason why is because of ongoing drought in much of the country ruining crops and that's driving feed prices higher. because of that, ranchers are raising fewer cattle and livestock. in the meantime a recent report finds americans are feeling better about the economy, but ongoing troubles in europe have investors selling stock. the markets are closed for

memorial day but here's how they ended up on friday. the dow dropped 75 points. the nasdaq was off by about 2 and the s&p 500 was down by about 3. china's population of more than one billion prompting wine makers to invest in unique vineyard locations. chateaux hanson in among goal ya's dessert has more than 600 acres of her low and -- merlot grapevines. the company plans to expand its brand abroad. according to one study, china is the world's fifth largest consumer of wine. demand is expected to rise to a billion bottles by 2015. oprah winfrey reportedly selling her eight-room chicago condo. check this out right here. $2.8 million in case you're interested. that's roughly half of what she paid for five years ago. believe it or not she never actually lived in the 4600 square foot unit. she spent most of her time living in her duplex a few

>> not just the humidity. it's the heat as we say, too. >> sort of backwards. >> i'm sort of backwards at times so that's all right, mike. weather wise, let's talk about it. we have a heat index that goes into effect at noon today for the entire area till 9:00 except for parts of southern maryland by the way, the eastern shore and the mountains. but everybody in the immediate metro toward frederick, baltimore, out in northern virginia, we're talking about heat index values in the mid- 90s. it's a little bit early. we're still in may. the parameters to issue these changes as we get into the summer months but a lot of us may not be used to the high humidity. the weather service has issued this. plenty of nonalcoholic fluids and air conditioning may be the best bet today. bus stop forecast, there's no school today. let's see what's happening with our memorial day planner. by 1:00 we'll be in the upper 80s after starting in the low 70s this morning. 5:00 89. an isolated storm will be possible. we may see one or two here this

afternoon and then 9:00 tonight 83. yesterday, the storms came down from pennsylvania. they were packing a punch. you got to feel for the organizers of this concert because here we are yesterday afternoon about 4:40. watch the showers and storms. came down and as this thing was coming down, reports of some damaging wind gusts in pennsylvania and you can see the way it bowed out here. winds 50, 60 miles an hour in frederick county, maryland. they were concerned this was coming right toward d.c. they had no choice but to evacuate. it's quiet this morning. partly to mostly cloudy. temperatures in the mid-60s. up north 64 in winchester. fredricksburg is still 72. our friends down in southern maryland 73 at pax river naval air station and even across the bay we've got 70 in easton. outside on our michael & son weather camera, good visibility this morning under the clouds. 71 degrees with a west southwest wind at 6. then muggies are back. we have 7 #% humidity. -- 78% humidity.

when you see the dew point above 60, it starts to get sticky. we had that one cluster of storms as it came down last night but it's pretty much dried up. it's in the southeast we're watching. northern florida tropical storm beryl made landfall last night. you can see how it's coming westbound here into southern georgia as well with readings for beryl anyway going to take -- the forecast track going to take beryl here, make the turn, quickly by late -- weaken by later tonight. tomorrow about 8:00, it will be making the turn coming through savannah. so this whole area will pick up some much needed rainfall out of this. great for them considering drought conditions down there. then as the circulation gets back over water, it will brush the carolina coast here during

the day on wednesday away from us, far south of us where we shouldn't really see much of a problem from beryl. a cold front may give us showers and storms and this is going to go back out into the atlantic likely becoming a tropical storm again but racing off to the east. so it won't be much of an issue. but this thing started as a nontropical low and then made the transition to a tropical storm here yesterday before making landfall and strengthening having winds to about 70 miles an hour. your forecast today, we've got a hot one. 90 degrees. a few more clouds early but we'll be mostly sunny for a while. isolated storms this afternoon and tonight. i don't think we'll see a repeat of yesterday afternoon but with the heat and humidity, certainly the threat of a strong storm isn't out of the possibilities. tonight down to about 70 in town. maybe even the low 70s. upper 80s tomorrow. in the afternoon a better chance and evening for showers and storms. even into the first part of wednesday. but by afternoon we should see

some clearing. still 88 but a drier afternoon on wednesday. thursday down to 80. by friday 79. then this weekend we're in the mid-70s. yes, mid-70s with a slight chance of showers. so much cooler by the upcoming weekend. let's take you to beverly farmer who has time saver traffic. i've got good news. we've got river road reopened inside the beltway near goldsboro where it had been closed in the overnight and early morning hours to remove a tree that did come down in last night's storm. river road at the beltway or the beltway at river road moving freely and no longer a detour to get into chevy chase and head into the district via river road insides the beltway. the federal holiday will help you out. east on 66 no early troubles to report in fact in either direction between the beltway and manassas, points west. eastbound as you make your way in past fair oaks, 123 light volume. no problems to report into falls church and beyond. 95 corridor likewise. again we've got the break of the long holiday weekend with

no overnight road work unless it's some sort of an emergency repair and none of that reported. everything open for you as you make your way up to the 14th street bridge. remember the extra volume we are going to see downtown. a lot of motorcycles still in town and driving around town so keep your eye on your mirrors for them today and still so much activity with the parade later on downtown and the wreath laying at the tomb of the unknowns at arlington mid- morning today as well. your next time saver traffic 4:55. back to you. >> thanks, bev. if you're on the beltway the next few days or few weeks, keep the eye out for a unique ride. fairfax hospital has unveiled a colorful new pediatric transport ambulance. it provides intensive care for sick babies and children and get this. why they didn't do this sooner i can't believe it. there's enough room in the ambulance for two kids and their parents. it includes a lab, generator, large supply of oxygen and respirator. the rolling icu can fit as many

as seven doctors if needed. >> the transport process is a period where lots of uncontrolled things can happen, can cause more instability. so having a rolling icu like this allows us to bring the icu to the patient and have a more controlled environment. >> inova fairfax rolling icu will cover 5600 mile radius. -- cover a 600 mile radius. the fun and sun ever the summer season also means the arrival of the mosquitoes. >> peggy fox looks at how fairfax county is responding to this year's threat of mosquitoes and of course the west nile virus. >> reporter: pounding rains this week made a mess of some area roads. now that standing water may create more worries providing the perfect place for mosquitoes to lay their eggs. these mosquitoes were just caught in the first traps put out this season by the fairfax county health department. >> the majority of the problems in the backyard is the asian tiger mosquito. it's a mosquito that breeds in

artificial containers around houses. they like the black corrugated pipes people use to drain the water away from the houses. >> reporter: they recommend tossing a lavacide mosquito dump in the pipes. each spot they have two traps. this one has dry ice that puts out carbon dioxide which attracts mosquitoes trying around looking to bite something and this trap has stagnant water which attracts mosquitoes looking for a place to lay eggs. ticks are a bigger concern. >> i'm putting them here. >> reporter: because of lyme disease. thankfully our most common tick, the lone star tick, does not carry the lyme disease bacteria. only the timey deer tick does, but how do you know the difference? >> that's the females and these are the males. >> reporter: a lone star tick and deer tick side by side look identical to the naked eye. that's why if one bites you, you should find out what it is. >> if you find a tick ow,

beach for the holiday weekend. in ocean city, they're finding a new boardwalk. first phase of the $6 million project is complete from the north end of the walk to 17th street. the remaining 2.5-mile boardwalk will be finished during the next off-season. there's a new thrill ride in ocean city this season. one you're not going to find anywhere else on the east coast. it aqua loop at the jolly rogers amusement park opened. you step into a compartment and you wait for the bottom to propel out before being propelled into twists and turns at 37 miles an hour. that's three gs of force. wow. >> you're going 37 miles an hour with nothing but your swimming trunks on. that's got to say something. just the reaction, the looks on their faces. it's just a really great ride. >> the travel channel named the aqua loop one of the top three summer thrills this year.
