for more information on northern virginia family service go to jchayward.com. this is 9 news now. we are beginning at this hour with more breaking news that we've been following out of fauquier county, virginia. one pilot is dead after two small planes crashed into one another. it happened shortly after 4:00 this afternoon in beallton. the pilot of the second plane was flying a piper aircraft, was able to safely land that. pilot was taken to the hospital. both aircraft were flying into warrenton fauquier airport using sight only without instruments when this crash happened and again, one pilot is dead after that two-plane crash. we are also talking about scorching temperatures taking their toll across the region as ems crews help people overcome by heat, temperatures in the 90s, most of our area still under a heat advisory and it looks like we could be in for a repeat tomorrow. >> i think it will be probably

a couple degrees cooler tomorrow, but yeah, it's been a very hot day. the concern is we're not used to this type of heat so early on in the season. we haven't quite acclimated yet. we're looking at live doppler 9000. look to the far west of us, west of interstate 81. we've got a couple thunderstorms popping up and most of those storms should be west and north of town. the heat advisory is still in effect until 9:00 tonight for the d.c. metro area. you see all those counties highlighted in orange. here's what it feels like, 95 in downtown, manassas feels like 98, fredericksburg 96, even hagerstown 91, cumberland 94, winchester 94. in fact, cumberland, allegany county, maryland, that flash flood warning has now expired. that's the good news there. we're looking at a chance for some isolated thunderstorms west of 81 and parts north of town into northern maryland. i think most of those barbecue parties should go off without a

hitch. if you do hear thunder or see lightning, plan on bringing your barbecue inside till that storm passes. the rest of the night partly cloudy and muggy. it's steamy out here, isolated storms possible north and west of town, lows 69 to 73 degrees. when i come back, we have a better chance of showers and storms tomorrow. we'll break that down for you. back to you. many people tried to escape the heat this weekend with a trip to the beach and now the rush is on to get back to d.c. friday was a nightmare getting across the bay bridge to the eastern shore. scott broom is live there now with a look at the trip back. scott, how's it going? >> reporter: well, it's hard to call it a nightmare because there are no major incidents on the major highways coming back from the coast to here at the bay bridge on into d.c. that doesn't mean it's not moving slowly at the normal choke points where 404 comes into u.s. 50 approaching the bay bridge and near annapolis. there are lots of spots where

people slowed to a crawl. there will be delays getting home, but thankfully there are no big accidents in the way. temperatures about 85 degrees near the water. that takes us to the other side of the bay, sandy point state park, for folks who couldn't get to the coast. take a look at the pictures. so many thousands of people trying to beat the heat that they had to stop letting people come into the park at 9:40 this morning. the park about reached capacity, 10,000 people and thousands of others in long lines trying to get in the park, clearly many very disappointed they couldn't get there but frankly, the park was too full to the safe. here's how some of them reacted. >> so what do we do now? >> reporter: disappointing? >> very. >> how do you close a park especially it's 92 and heat index would be over 100. >> my friend got stuck in there. he called us and he got turned back, but we were already in. >> reporter: it wasn't a

completely blown day if you came to the park after 3:00. enough people had left they were able to reopen the entrance and people are coming and going right now from sandy point having their big memorial day barbecues and still able to get into the water. the other good news on the highways this weekend, of course, was the gas prices, seven straight weeks of gas prices dropping, gas prices this weekend 16 cents below where they were last year. back live now monitoring the situation on the bay bridge, traffic headed westbound crawling up the bridge, looks like it is between 25 and 30 miles per hour and they finally break loose when they get passed annapolis. if you're expecting somebody home from the beach tonight, give them an extra hour at least. scott broom, 9 news now. >> thanks, scott. a holiday trip to the beach landed a lorton, virginia man under arrest accused of a drunk driving crash that killed a

pedestrian. 30-year-old diogo facchini was charged with homicide by motor vehicle while intoxicated. he hit a 22-year-old man from howard county with his suv early this morning on coastal highway and fled the scene. witnesses followed facchini until police arrested him. memorial day is not just about spending time and fun in the sun and having a day off from work. it is also about remembering the men and women who serve our country every day and those who pay the ultimate sacrifice. elizabeth cordon shows us. >> reporter: 50 years have come and gone since troops to vietnam were deployed. the country embarked on a 13 year long commemoration leading up to the 50th anniversary of the vietnam war. >> one of the most painful chapters in our history was vietnam. you were often blamed for a war you didn't start and you should have been commended for serving your country with valor.

>> reporter: around the nation's capital and across the country monday americans paid tribute to the men and women who served and who still serve who risked their lives and who lost their lives. >> they gave all their futures so that you and i could live in this strong free and beautiful america. >> reporter: in a tradition steeped in solemn reflection a single wreath was placed at a single tomb. a national symbol of the tremendous sacrifices made in the name of freedom. >> when a revolution needed to be waged and a union needed to be saved they left their homes and took up arms for the sake of an idea. from the jungles of vietnam to the mountains of afghanistan they stepped forward and aned the call. >> reporter: because they -- answered the call. >> reporter: because they answered the call the country pauses to honor, remember and say panic thank you. you-- say thank you.

all the well known washington sites at the national mall is the district's war memorial. today it was adorned with 499 bouquets of roses, one each for a d.c. casualty. some members of congress want to make this memorial a national world war i memorial. some d.c. residents are against that idea. >> we want the district of columbia war memorial to remain the district of columbia's. >> it was paid for by local contributions in a significant way from the nickels of children. >> supporters of the d.c. memorial say they'll keep a close eye on any legislation to rename that site. this week chuck brown fans will have their chance to bid farewell to the godfather of go go. it starts tomorrow with a public viewing from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. at howard theater on t street northwest. then the community can attend a

memorial thursday from noon to 3:00 at the washington convention center. if you can't make it that day, we will broadcast the memorial live on the air and on our website www.wusa9.com. one month after three horses were stabbed fairfax county police are still investigating attacks on animals at frying pan farm park. this time four animals were injured at herndon park. now police are trying to find out if the same person is behind them. >> reporter: i'm kristin fisher at the frying pan farm park in herndon where parents had a tough time today trying to explain to their kids why someone would want to hurt baby animals in this barn. >> got to save them. >> you got to go save them? okay, buddy. go save them. >> reporter: when farm staff came to feed them sunday morning, they found four animals that had been stabbed overnight, two goats, a chicken and a calf. you can see the cuts on its head are held together by staples. >> that's atrocious. >> it's disgusting. >> that's scary and senseless. >> reporter: it's especially

today a father and son from rodville appeared on a taped -- rockville appeared on a taped telecast on the price is right. this is andrew and his son jake. this is the first time the show invited teenagers to participate with a parent. it was a great outing for the duo. they won a car. good news for the father and son and their car, the price of gas fell for the 12th straight day and d.c. the average for a gallon of regular is $3.60, just down a penny from yesterday but compared to a month ago prices are down 32 cents. coming up next a local city pays tribute to our troops with a celebration unlike any other,

of course, we know memorial day is about more than just beaches and barbecues. it's a day to honor all those who died serving the country. this afternoon thousands of people in d.c. paid tribute at the national memorial day parade. this year's event paid special tribute to the u.s. air force which is celebrating its 60th 5th anniversary this year -- 65th anniversary this year. retired air force major general chuck yeager, the first to break the speed of sound, served as grand marshal. and the tributes to our veterans continued outside the nation's capital as well. in rockville the city held its 68th memorial day parade. photojournalist joe martin was there and brings us the sights and sounds of the tribute to our troops.

the candy. we love this parade. >> i like all the red, white and blue no matter where it shows up. >> wave. >> my father was in the service and i have a lot of family members in the service. >> we have a lot of family in the armed forces, some overseas now and some home. so it's a time when we think about them. >> reminds me of giving back to the people that gave for us. >> it's so wonderful to spend part of your day here remembering those who have given so much for the country. >> you can't thank them enough. you can't do enough for them. >> vienna, virginia observed memorial day with adowntown festival. hundreds of vendors and rides, crafts, exhibits, food and performances and all the proceeds going to charity. tropical storm beryl is no more now downgraded to a tropical depression, but still the storm is washing out memorial day activities for many in the southeast part of

the country. beryl made landfall early this morning in jacksonville, florida. it pounded the coast of georgia and florida with rough seas and near hurricane force winds. that and damaged boats and docks in jacksonville forced the city to cancel many memorial day events. the storm continues to weaken as it moves inland. the main threat now is flooding from heavy rain in drought stricken parts of the south. it was a race against time for one florida couple trying to take the knot down in orange park florida yet. brian and amanda porter were hoping to get through their vows before tropical storm beryl came ashore. scott thornton was a guest at the wedding and filmed the ceremony. he said the timing was perfect. as soon as the couple said i do, kissed, everybody cheered and then ran for the reception building before the rain started. >> that is one determined couple. i'm glad they made it through safely. >> at least one of them was determined, probably the bride. i'm just kidding.

congratulations to them. >> hot out there today. >> it is hot, yeah. our bodies just aren't used to this kind of heat so early in the season, which is why the national weather service went ahead and issued that heed advisory for today. it still remains in effect until 9:00 tonight. so take it easy. i'm sure a lot of you folks are having fun on the barbecues. most of those should go off without a hitch. record highs, we tied in two spots, baltimore and dulles at 90 degrees. in downtown we got up to 97 degrees and -- no. that's 90 degrees, but the record high was 97 degrees set in 1941. live weather cam brought to you by michael and son, beautiful shot of i 0 gina, 80 degrees, plenty of sunshine, winds from the south at 13 -- of iwo jima, 80 degrees, plenty of sunshine, winds from the south at 13 miles per hour. quiet in the beltway, just see a couple pop-up thunderstorms out to the west west of

interstate 81. here's a closer look at some of those storms. right around town we look fine, but we saw a couple popping up toward west virginia and also toward the mason dixon line where cumberland earlier saw a pretty good storm go through. the heat advisory is until 9:00 for much of the d.c. metro area where you see those counties highlighted in orange. in the red is the heat warning. so right now temperatures upper 80s in downtown, 90 in gaithersburg, 88 for culpeper, even out toward ocean city in the lower 80s. hot and humid a couple more days, isolated thunderstorm possible tonight north and west of town, hot and muggy tuesday, then afternoon showers are possible, scattered thunderstorms, but then we finally cool down thursday and friday to more around average. our 9 futurecast, late tonight generally quiet, isolated storms possible north and west of town. tomorrow morning commute looks

fine. bring out the sunglasses, but a front comes through, afternoon looking at scattered showers and storms into the evening hours as well. wednesday early morning maybe a few leftover showers and then the clouds start to clear for the afternoon wednesday and we're going to be cooler, especially by thursday. tonight partly cloudy and muggy, isolated storm possible, lows 69 to 73 degrees. here's a look at your next seven days, upper 80s for tuesday, still hot, afternoon showers and storms possible. it will be scattered and then same deal wednesday morning, but still hot, 87. then we're looking at cooler and drier air, thursday and friday into the upper 70s, much more comfortable. nats game friday looking good with the showers holding off till early saturday. we'll watch that. turnaround for the nats. >> times have changed.
